Item A content analysis of 12 episodes of the radio comedy-drama Toyang ErmitanyaBantiquete, Theola H.; Galanza, Siena Therese M.; Gersabalino, Jeniffer G. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)This study “A Content Analysis of the Radio-Comedy Drama Toyang Ermitanya” aims:(1) to identify the various issues presented in the 12 episodes of the drama (Episodes 256-267, aired in July 2003); (2) to classify the issues into different categories such as political, social, economic, religious, educational and others (gender issues); (3) to determine which of the six categories are frequently raised, and; (4) to determine whether or not the drama reflects social reality. The researchers used a sell-devised descriptive code sheet in analyzing and categorizing the issues that are presented in the drama. They set six categories where each issue would fall. Percentage distribution was used to determine which among the six categories is frequently raised. They also provided actual samples of the issues under each category, quoted in the Hiligaynon language with its corresponding translation in English. Researched on the events that happened in July 2003--the time when the 12 episodes were aired over Bombo Rady Iloilo— were then related to the issues that were presented in the 12 episodes of the drama in order to determine whether or not Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. This study is significant for it provides an in-depth treatment of the societal issues, thus, making people aware of the prevalent issues confronting the society at the same time. Second, it serves as an important tool in analyzing the role of media in presenting various issues of the society in a manner that almost everyone can relate to. In the process, it will guide media practitioners in producing a satirical program that will catch the interest, and at the same time, meet the need of the society in terms of information and entertainment. The researchers identified 163 issues that were raised in the 12 episodes of the drama Toyang Ermitanya. Results of the study show that social issues are frequently raised in the drama. It is followed by political, economic, religious, others (gender issues), and finally, educational which got a zero percentage. Using the Cone-effect theory, the study shows that Radio Comedy-Drama Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. The study would have been better if the researchers interviewed the producer/ scriptwriter of Toyang Ermitanya. For future researchers, the researchers recommend that research on another radio drama be done to further validate this study’s claim that radio dramas are not only for entertainment, but, are also a good source of information and reflect social realities.Item Study and stream: University students' behavior on online academic learning and their motivations for binge-watching on NetflixBanting, Ericka Marie; Bitoca, Joyce Anne Marie; Buergo, Angelika (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)The Covid 19 pandemic brought Netflix to unprecedented heights, especially among people aged 18 to 24. The remote setup of learning enabled students to multi-task between their schoolwork and non-academic activities. In particular, this study looks into the phenomenon of binge-watching among communication students from a selected university who are direct subscribers of Netflix. Using the framework designed by Panda and Pandey (2017) on the motivations and outcomes of binge-watching among college students, this research investigates if there is a relationship between the university students' behaviors on online academic learning and the factors that motivate them to binge-watch TV shows/series on Netflix. The research design is quantitative in nature and data analysis utilizes the Pearson's R correlation. Findings show a moderately small, positive correlation between the university students' behavior towards online academic learning and their motivations to binge-watch TV shows/series on Netflix. This means that progress in the student's behavior on online academic learning signifies an increase in their motivations for binge-watching.Item A comparison of spelling in texting and formal writingBarrientos, Shiela Rose Z.; Vencer, Ruby Jean A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)This study, entitled A Comparison of Spelling in Texting and Formal Writing, shows the similarities and differences in spelling by high school students on mobile communication and in formal writing. It also provides educators basic information on whether or not they should worry over the spelling skills of students. And it will somehow shed light on the ongoing debate as to the perceived influence of text messaging on the writing skills of students. The respondents of the study were fourth-year students of Palaca-Damilisan National High School. Using essays and text messages written and composed by the high school students, the researchers aimed to describe how high school students construct messages using cellular phone, find out their commonly misspelled words in English language based on the set of words provided by the researchers, and finally to compare the way high school students spell words in text messaging and formal writing. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior of Ajzen (2006) that shows how a person’s beliefs, the social pressure to conform to the wishes of others, and perceived ability to carry out the action can affect his behavior such as spelling words in text messaging and formal writing. After the necessary data were gathered, the researchers found that majority of the respondents scored low in spelling in text messaging and scored average in the formal writing. Twenty or 48% has a low score both in text messaging and formal writing. Only two respondents got an average score both in text messaging and formal writing, while only one rated high in formal writing but scored low in text messaging. The researchers found out that in text messaging, five of the 15 words in the list were consistently misspelled while in formal writing, the respondents spelled properly all the words except for one, which is irresistible. In addition, respondents used contractions, numbers and symbols as substitute for letters and omitted some vowels in text messaging, while in formal writing the respondents do not substitute letters with numbers. The researchers recommend to conduct more studies on the perceived influence of technological advancement such as cellular phone on the word construction in formal writing, improve the questionnaire so as to satisfy other elements stated in the Theory of Planned Behavior, formulate survey questions that will measure the respondents’ English language skills, conduct a study that would compare the spelling skills of cellular phone and non-cellular phone users, and conduct the study on a group of respondents who are cellular phone users and have a high competence in the English language.Item Reasons for dropping out: The case of high school students in selected barangays of Miag-ao, IloiloArzaga, Marie Christine E.; Taladtad, Mary Jane E. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)The study seeks to determine the different reasons for dropping out of school among high school dropouts in Barangay Indag-an and Barangay Tan-agan, Miag-ao, Iloilo. Specifically, it wants to find out: (1) the financial status of the family, (2) the student-teacher relationship, and (3) the social activities of the students at the time of dropping out. Twenty one (21) respondents composed of eighteen (18) males and three (3) females participated in the study. All of them were high school dropouts found in Barangay Indag-an and Barangay Tan-agan, Miag-ao Iloilo who have dropped out of school from the recent 2002 to the last ten years. This study used interview schedule to measure the differences of reasons for dropping out. The instrument was made up of three parts: financial status of the family, the student-teacher relationship, and social activities of the students at the time of dropping out. The frequency and percentage distribution were utilized in interpreting the data. The results of this study revealed that financial status of the respondent’s family and the social activities they engaged in were the greatest factor in motivating them to quit schooling. Student-teacher relationship on the other hand, had the least motivation for students to quit schooling.Item Carnival in Norman Wilwayco's two novels and selected short storiesAzarcon, John Carlo S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03)This study analyzes Norman Wilwayco’s two novels and selected short stories using Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin’s theory on Carnival and its applications on literature and popular culture. As a two time Don Carlos Palanca Awardee, Norman Wilwayco’s works present a new kind of writing style that manifest current conditions of his society which demands literary analysis and criticism. The researcher focused on three main elements of Carnival, mainly: Reversal of Hierarchies, Billingsgate Language, and the Grotesque Body and show how these are applied in his works. The researcher looked into and discovered how the author used these elements to create a carnivalized world which depicts and uplifts Philippine popular culture in his works.Item A descriptive study on how adolescents respond to value-bearing communicationAsong, Mariver A.; Bobe, Minnie Marie M.; Guadalquiver, Nanette L.; Jalover, Carol P.; Niembra, Lorlyn C.; Rasmo, Anna Vina Lisa L.; Salazar, Ma. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1995-03)This study is an attempt to re-validate the study framework of Dr. Jacobson Kliatchko, which he used in his dissertation entitled, Communication and Attitude Development: A Philosophical Perspective. The framework deals with the development of attitudes after exposure to value-bearing communication. Because this study does not deal with the cause and effect relationship, the variables are rather called as components. The components of such study framework are: environment, value-bearing communication, and attitude. In this study, the environment is Marillac Academy. The value-bearing communication is the module on good study habits. And the attitude is the study habits of the respondents. needed data. Purposive sampling was used to determine the respondents. The essays and interviews with the students and the questionnaires filled up by the parents were the instruments designed to elicit the needed data. The general objective of this study is to determine how adolescents respond to value-bearing communication. Results reveal that although most of the respondents did not follow their study schedule, all of them have allotted time for their studies as reflected by the filled up observation sheets accomplished by the parents. This suggests that there is favorable response on the part of the respondents towards value-bearing communication. The study framework of Dr. Kliatchko that was used in the study shows that there is indeed an attitude formed when a value-bearing communication is inputted to a certain environment.Item Relationship between media exposure and attitude of Iloilo City Junior High School students towards indigenous peoplesAmon, Abigail; Garzon, Ma. Mercedes (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-05)This research discusses the relationship between media exposure and the attitude of selected Iloilo City public junior high school students towards the indigenous peoples. Three hundred junior high school students from Bo. Obrero National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Mandurriao National High School, Ramon Avanceña National High School, and SPED - Integrated School for Exceptional Children served as respondents to a five-part questionnaire that included demographics, exposure to media and IPs, attitude, additional questions regarding the relationship between their media exposure and their attitude towards IPs, and the information they received and wished to receive from media. The researchers found that students were most exposed to online media and that they had low exposure to mediated content on indigenous peoples on all media platforms. It was concluded that respondents had an overall positive attitude towards indigenous peoples. Moreover, both the media industry and the educational system should be more responsible in supporting the IPs through wider media coverage and introduction to more media platforms.Item Framing deliberative democracy through the formation of Iloilo Provincial Youth Development CouncilAdelantar, Carmela Francesca S.; Alvizo, Sol Sophia Angeliene C.; Lozaida, Gabriel Angelo G.; Seva, Bianca R. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)This study was done in order to frame deliberative democracy in the promotion of youth participation in local governance through the Iloilo Provincial Youth Development Council (Iloilo PYDC). It examined the processes of decision-making and consensus building of Iloilo PYDC in answering the following research questions: (1) how are the members of the Local Youth Development Council selected; (2) how did the degree of influence of the youth sector in local decision making increase through the LYDC; (3) what is the role of the Local Government Units, civil society, and other stakeholders in equipping Local Youth Development Council to conduct deliberative policy discussions; (4) what are the best deliberative practices in Iloilo PYDC. The study was descriptive and made the use of 20-item survey, focus group discussion, key informant interview, and observation of Iloilo PYDC meeting. The research results indicate that the extent of power given by the Iloilo PYDC to the youth mainly focused on being a platform for consultation and discussion of youth interests, enabling them to set agendas and present issues that may not normally be addressed. They can then lobby local governments to include these concerns in development plans such as the Local Youth Development Plan (LYDP). The deliberative practices of the Iloilo PYDC have served as a platform for youth organizations to present and lobby the Ilonggo youth’s needs and interests. This research recommends that there should be a meaningful implementation of the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Law and enrichment of deliberative democratic practice that will further strengthen youth participation in local governance.Item The relationship of communication styles employed by the College of Arts and Sciences faculty members to their ratings in the student-faculty evaluationAbalayan, Chris C.; Bachoco, Anecita C.; Hosillos, Rojun V. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1996-04)The study in the effectivity of communication styles used by any individual in different situations has been a subject of many researches. This research would like to find out the relationship of communication styles employed by the College of Arts and Sciences faculty members to their ratings in the student-faculty evaluation. These further aims to know the type of communication styles most of the faculty members of the CAS used in their teachings. Also, the study hopes to determine the preferred communication styles of the students for their teachers and determine what communication style has the highest and/or lowest rating in each of the four criteria in the student-faculty evaluation. A Communication Style Inventory devised by Allan rowe, et. al, 1988 and the Student-Faculty Evaluation used by the whole UP system were the instruments used in the study. The study was conducted in the College of Arts and Sciences, first semester and second semester of Academic Year 1995-1996. Twenty-three faculty members of the Division of Humanities and Division of Social Sciences teaching General Education (G.E.) subjects and students who belongs to the class were randomly chosen as respondents. Findings showed that a consultative communication style dominates majority of the faculty members. However, using the Categorical Method (CATMOD) in solving the data, results of the study showed no significant relationship between communication styles used by the faculty members of the CAS to their ratings in the student-faculty evaluation.Item Trends in the work profession of BABC graduates, SY 2001-2004Acosta, Meryll Joyce; Rojo, Rea Ann; Yulo, Novy Katherene (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-10)This study was conducted to find out the trends or patterns in the work profession of BA Broadcast Communication graduates from school years 2001-2002, 2002-2003, and 2003-2004 using sex and major field as variables. It also aims to find out what other jobs BABC graduates have, what factors affected them, and how satisfied are they with their jobs. This study was conducted during the first semester of the school year 2004-2005. Respondents chosen for this study were 140 graduates of BABC from school years 2001-2004. However, only 39 were able to reply. The locale of the study includes various places in the Philippines, mostly Metro Manila, Iloilo City, and Iloilo Province. The research design used in this study is descriptive. Results of the study show that majority of BABC graduates do not end up in the media. Those who were able to get into broadcast-related jobs do not plan to stay for good in their present jobs. On the other hand, those who did not get into broadcast-related jobs plan to pursue these kinds of jobs. The study also shows that most BABC graduates within the said school years are moderately satisfied with their present jobs.
