Item Decision making in the practice of birth control in a rural communityBarrios, Ritchie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)This is a study on the decision-making pattern of couples in the use of birth control in a rural community. The study sought to determine: 1. Who the decision-maker is in the couple structure: 2. how the decision to practice was reached by them and 3. what are the basis for the choice of a particular birth control method. Based on the findings it was concluded that for the couples in Brgy. Tuburan, Pototan, Iloilo it was both the husband and the wife who decided that they will practice birth control. This is contrary to the popular notion that it is the husband who decides. It was also found out that the midwife who was at the same time the family planning implementor, played a major role in the decision to practice birth control. Having reached the decision to practice birth control, certain considerations like convenience, effectiveness, no side effects, etc. were taken by the couples in the selection of the method to adopt. It was however found out that the final choice of the method to be used was made by the family planning implementor. It is interesting to note, however, that in the barangay only forty-one couples out of the one hundred seventy have or are practicing birth control. This is attributed to the fact that the family planning implementors failed to get the message across to a larger audience. The mothers' class which was used as a strategy to attract couples to take interest in family planning failed to reach large segment of the population.Item Isolation and partial characterization of globulin from Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) tubersBarbosa, May R. (Division of Physical Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-04)Soluble globulin was isolated using an extraction buffer (0.4 M NaCl in 35 mM potassium phosphate buffer, pH 7.6 with 0.02% Na azide). The isolated globulin was subjected to solubility tests with different NaCl concentrations. It has the highest solubility in 1.25M NaCl (1.09%), but no significant differences existed among the NaCl concentrations by analysis using one-way ANOVA at a = 0.05. Three major bands existed at LOOM NaCl dissolved globulin with molecular weight ranges of 28-33kDa, 38- 43kDa, and 65-70kDa relative to BSA. Two of these bands (38-43kDa and 65-70kDa) were observed in 0.50M and 0.75M NaCl soluble globulin. The 1.25M and 1.50M NaCl concentrations gave a single band (28-33kDa) each, while no clear bands were observed in other NaCl concentrations. Amino acid analysis revealed glutamic acid (12.09%) as the most abundant amino acid component of cassava globulin. Nine (9) essential amino acids were present. Of these nine, lysine (10.50%) is the most predominant. Cystine (0.39%) has the lowest percentage, followed by methionine (1.76%).Item Economic cost of dengue fever treatment in Miagao, IloiloBanehit, Gracesel Faith D.; Napulan, Macie Carlyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)Dengue, the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral infection in the world, has caused many deaths in the Philippines. The municipality of Miagao, Iloilo Province, has recorded a high number of dengue cases in recent years. This study determined the economic cost of dengue fever treatment among affected households and patients with dengue in 2016 in Miagao. The study used a cross-sectional data collected from 169 interviews with the study participants for 201 dengue patients from 62 barangays in Miagao in February to April 2017. The study identified, measured, and valued the various costs related to dengue fever treatment. Results showed that the total economic cost for home-treated patients averaged at Pl2,522.08 for both the patient and the caregiver (household), with the following breakdown: P5,068.82 for monetary costs (direct medical and non-medical costs) and P7,453.26 as opportunity cost. For those who were admitted in the hospital, the total economic cost averaged at P22,213.31 with the following breakdown: P9,504.77 for monetary costs and P12,708.54 for opportunity cost. As expected, patients treated at home had lower costs both in monetary and nonmonetary aspects compared to those confined in the hospital. Although the majority of the study participants are knowledgeable about dengue, it is still necessary to increase their awareness of dengue prevention in order to prevent dengue treatment costs for the households. The local government must also strengthen the implementation of its existing dengue prevention policies and programs to mobilize cooperation and involvement of the people in dengue prevention.Item Public utility jeepney drivers in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental: Socio-economic conditions and income differentials analysisBanagodos Lorena Joy P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-04)Benchmark information was sought regarding the socioeconomic conditions of jeepney drivers and their households from a sample of 111 respondents in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. This profile focused on their socio-demographic and housing characteristics as well as their household expenditure patterns. Several aspects of the driving occupation was also discussed. Income differentials analysis was also used to determine the factors that significantly accounted for the variability in driving income. Drivers were mainly composed of married and middle-aged men, majority of whom were high school graduates. Average household size was from 4—5 members with the father—driver as the only earning family member. Income from jeepney driving accounted for over half of the monthly total household income, averaging at P4,039.73. Drivers houses were made of GI roofs, and wooden outer walls. Most of the sample personally owned their housing units but were squatting on other people's lands. Their houses were equipped with electricity for lighting, LPG for cooking, manual pumps for drinking water and exclusive waste—sealed toilets. Food accounted for over 607. of the driving households' expenditures followed by education, utilities, and medical care. Out of their expenditures, the driving households were still able to save less than 10%. of their total incomes. Operator driver households had higher expenditure levels than boundary driver households. On the average, the drivers' total expenditures were higher than the 1996 inflated food and poverty thresholds. Their income-expenditure patterns reveal a discrepancy of P1414.21 between their total household income and total household expenditures which means that drivers' households have higher chances of increasing their savings levels. Driving experience averaged at 16 years. Consisting mainly of boundary drivers, majority of the sample — fueled jeepneys. Striking rounds were mostly done during peak hours (7-9 AM, 11-1 PM, and 4-7 PM) while parking rounds were done during lean hours (9-11 AM and 1-3 PM). Drivers were largely free to choose how long and how often to work in a day or week. They drove for six days weekly and averaged nine hours per day. Passing by 10-16 schools, jeepneys which traversed four routes (Bata-Libertad, Shopping-Libertad, Banago—Libertad , and Mandalagan-Libertad jeepneys) had relatively higher mean incomes than the rest of the sample. Boundary drivers had higher reported boundary fees and lower daily incomes than operator drivers. The sample's average driving income breaks even with the daily poverty threshold for a family of six members. Only 36% had SSS memberships. Drivers largely shouldered the vulcanizing, fuel, association membership fees and traffic violation penalties of utility vehicles while operators largely assumed its expenses for vehicle-related violations, spare parts, repair, and maintenance needs.The subject-respondents considered the small volume of passengers on some routes, the high cost of penalties from traffic violations, the unscrupulous apprehensions of traffic enforcers, the proposed traffic rerouting scheme and the labor—intensiveness of the occupation as some of its most pressing problems. The postulated regression model was determined to be highly significant with an F-computed value of 7.964. The t-test and p- values, likewise, indicated four independent variables ( number of schools passed, the capacity of the vehicle, the number of strikes per day, and the type of driver) to be significant and accounted for about 397. of the variability in driving income.Item Antioxidative properties of the fruits of selected tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) varietiesBaltazar, Gleza Wae D. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This study was conducted to compare the antioxidative properties of greenstage fruits of selected Lycopersicon esculentum Miller varieties (Diamante, Diamante Max, and Pidada) from Barangay Durog, Miagao, Iloilo. The fresh fruit samples were extracted with 95% ethanol. The crude extracts were concentrated using rotary evaporator. The antioxidant activity of the ethanolic fruit extracts was assayed for DPPH radical scavenging activity and the IC50 values were determined. The determination of the phenolic and flavonoid contents was done employing Folin- Ciocalteu method and aluminum chloride spectrophotometric method, respectively. The results show that the fruits of the studied L. esculentum varieties exhibit DPPH radical scavenging activity. The IC50 values, however, differ significantly among the varieties. The IC50 values for Diamante (24.22 ± 1.41 g/L) and Diamante Max (25.08 ± 0.45 g/L) are comparable but are significantly lower than Pidada (29.47 ± 1.33 g/L). These findings imply that Diamante and Diamante Max varieties have stronger antioxidative capacity than the Pidada variety. Moreover, the results indicate that the antioxidative property of L. esculentum is variety-dependent. The results of the determination of the total phenolic content, expressed in mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per g fresh sample, are in the order of 0.16 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g for Diamante > 0.15 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g for Diamante Max and Pidada. On the other hand, the results of the determination of the flavonoid content, expressed in μg quercetin equivalent (QE) per g fresh sample, are in the order of 6.31 ± 1.27 μg QE/g for Diamante >6.21 ± 0.88 μg QE/g for Diamante Max > 5.63 ± 0.94 pg QE/g for Pidada. No significant difference in the total phenolic and flavonoid contents was found among varieties. Nonetheless, the detection of phenolics and flavonoids, known antioxidants, supports the present results on the antioxidative property of the fruits of the L. esculentum varieties studied.Item Antioxidant property of anthocyanin from malatinta (Phyllanthus reticulatus Poir.) fruits obtained by static and microwave-assisted extractionBaldonasa, RB Hera Angelica R. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)Fresh fruits of Phyllanthus reticulatus Poir. were analyzed for anthocyanin by spectrophotometric method. The antioxidant activity using 1,1 -diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH ) free radical scavenging activity (FRSA) and reducing power (RP) through FeCl3 assay were determined. The use of two extraction processes, namely, the static method and microwave-assisted extraction, using two extraction solvents, acidified methanol and aqueous ethanol (1:1) were compared. The total anthocyanin content (TAC) of P. reticulatus fruit was highest in extract using static method of extraction in acidified methanol solvent (279.94 ±17.31 mg/lOOg), comparable to levels found in plants rich in anthocyanins, (e.g., berries genotypes, grapes and red cabbages). In microwave-assisted extraction, TAC using acidified methanol was higher (278.01 ± 18.76 mg/lOOg) compared to using aqueous ethanol (210.96 ± 2.02 mg/100g). P. reticulatus fruits exhibited high antioxidant activity as revealed by its RP and DPPH FRSA results when compared to ascorbic acid. These findings highlight the usefulness of P. reticulatus as a source of anthocyanins with good antioxidant properties, which, in turn, gives importance to the undervalued and underutilized plant.Item The growth and yield performance of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus Fries) using fish wastewater as fertilizerArroyo, Karen T. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-04)Oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, is an edible wood-inhabiting fungi that continues to gain popularity in the Philippines, as well as in other tropical countries. With the use of modern technology, this mushroom can be grown in the Philippines, provided sufficient moisture is present. Its present cultivation is limited, perhaps due to insufficiency of planting materials and the limited knowledge about its culture. The main objective of the study was to establish the possibility of the replacement of urea, the commonly used fertilizer for mushroom cultivation by fish wastewater. The study also aimed to compare the effects of different concentrations of fish wastewater on the growth of mushrooms and determine which treatment produced the best results. A total of five groups were used: two control groups (positive and negative - using urea and water, respectively) and three experimental groups, the latter with different concentrations of fish wastewater serving as alternative fertilizer (A: 10%, B: 20%, C: 30%). Fruiting bags were inoculated with oyster mushroom spawn, and after a month of incubation, the growing mushrooms were assessed using the parameters of number, weight, length, and diameter. Results showed that the weight of oyster mushrooms was heaviest when the substrate was sprayed with plain water. However, the number of mushrooms harvested, their length, and the width of the pilei were not affected by spraying the substrate with urea or moistening these with up to 30% fish wastewater. The conclusions reached were: 1) when using sawdust as substrate for oyster mushroom cultivation, it is best to simply use water to maintain the moisture of the material; 2) sawdust used in combination with low concentration of fish wastewater (10%) can result in good production; 3) neither nitrogen nor urea may be a critical factor for the growth of oyster mushroom on sawdust; and 4) high amount of phosphorus and low potassium content of fish wastewater are favorable for oyster mushroom growth.Item A novel water-in-oil-in-water emulsion to encapsulate antibacterial agentsBalcarcel, Angelica V. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-06)Encapsulating bioactive compounds can protect them from adverse conditions. This study aimed to encapsulate bioactive agents in a stable multiple emulsion system using a material that can be recovered easily from a product abundant here in the country. Results of the study revealed that the method of encapsulation used is effective in encapsulating and releasing the bioactive compound encapsulated. The antibacterial activity determination showed that encapsulated chlorhexidine is effective against both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Further investigation was made by encapsulating aqueous guava (Psidium guajava) extract in the same emulsion system (water-in-oil- in-water) using recovered coconut milk protein (CMP) as a gelling agent. The evaluation of the stability of the emulsions revealed that the treatment with 40% guava extract in the aqueous phase of its primary emulsion (Emulsion 3) is the most stable among the other treatments. This treatment showed the smallest droplet size range and most uniformed droplet sizes. The creaming index of this treatment also showed the lowest values after three (3) weeks of storage. On the other hand, the treatment with 60% guava extract in the aqueous phase of its primary emulsion (Emulsion 4) appeared to be the most stable against heating. However, no antibacterial activity was observed for any of the emulsion systems both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Additional test revealed that the bioactive compound present in the plant extract was disrupted by the sonication processItem Molluscicidal effect of quicklime, CaO on golden snail (Pomacea canaliculata)Baibado, Joewel Tarra (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)The golden snail (Pomacea canaliculata) is presently a major pest of rice in lowland and rainfed areas through out the Philippines . The problem of golden snail infestation in rice farming system includes damage to the rice plants, rice yield losses, additional expense, side effects of chemicals and destructive effect on native snails . The study was conducted to evaluate the molluscicidal effect of calcium oxide for the control of golden snails in farmlands and to determine the 96hour LC50 in order to know the lethal concentration of calcium oxide to golden snails. Calcium oxide was found to have a molluscicidal activity on golden snails The golden snails were exposed to different concentrations namely. 100 ppm. 200 ppm. 300 ppm .400 ppm. and 500 ppm Remarkable lethal effects of calcium oxide (p<0.05) has been found in 4(H) and 500 ppm concentrations which has reached 60-100 % after the 96 hour treatment. The 96-hour LC50 within the 95% confidence interval was 322.02 ppm as computed Calcium oxide is safe on rice when used as a molluscicide It performs dual function as fertilizer/soil stabilizer and molluscide. These dual effects are very significant because it means big savings on the part of the rice farmers. Considering the prevalence of this pest, farmers spend much on molluscicides and their application. With calcium oxide, the farmer has a molluscicide and soil stabilizer in one application.Item Determination of the concentration of essential minerals (Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Zn) in honey samples from Negros OccidentalArellano, Lory Mae F. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-06)Honey is a natural, sweet and highly nutritional substance produced by bees through a series of nectar collection and chemical processes. Due to the popularity of the product, certain regions in the Philippines has been producing honey and recently, different apiaries from Negros Occidental has been producing its own share of popular product in the market. The products are well received by the consumers, but the problem is the lack of characterization which gives the product doubtful and unconfirmed nutritional value. This study focuses on the quantification of essential minerals (Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Zn) present in local honey samples from Negros Occidental. Eight honey samples were obtained from the different apiaries including an external sample from Mindoro. Samples were acid digested using HNO3/H2O2 solution at 130 °C. The concentration of each minerals in the honey samples were analyzed using AAS. The data reported high concentration (5.71 to 93.20 ppm) of K on most of the samples. The second most abundant mineral in the local honey is Ca ranging from 13.67 to 45.88 ppm. The Mg concentration ranges from 1.19 to 4.09 ppm while Na is in between 0.82 to 3.14 ppm. The mineral Zn and Fe contained the lowest concentration in most of the samples with Zn at 0.46 to 0.86 ppm and Fe at 0.04 to 0.30 ppm.
