    A preliminary study on the freezing tolerance of milkfish (Chanos chanos, Forskal) embryos

    Milkfish embryos of blastula and C-shaped stages were tested for cryoprotectant toxicity using DMSO and glycerol at 10%, 12% and 15% concentrations. Survival and hatching as well as the effects of freezing were observed. Glycerol was more toxic than DMSO. Freezing at 4°C resulted in the decrease of hatching, and ice crystal formation killed the embryos during the process of freezing to -80°C. C-shaped embryos had a higher survival and hatching than the blastula stage embryos in the toxicity and cold shock tests.

    Antifungal activities of alginate films incorporated with lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil on sliced bread

    The accumulation of non-degradable and non-recyclable waste materials leads researches to venture on biopolymer films which have been regarded as the promising green substitutes of non-biodegradable plastic materials. However, food products can be subjected to contamination by bacteria and fungi. The addition of plant derived essential oil can control microbial contamination of foods by reducing the growth rate of target microorganisms or by inactivating microorganisms by direct or indirect contact. Incorporating antimicrobial compounds into films provides a different way to improve the safety of ready-to-eat foods. In this study, the efficiency of synthesized alginate films incorporated with lemon grass essential oil (LGEO) for antifungal activity on white bread was evaluated. Two sets of film were prepared the (1) LGEO - Ethanol incorporated films and (2) LGEO — β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex films via solution casting method. Furthermore, the FTIR analysis of the generated films was also assessed to identify the functional groups present in the film that facilitates its antifungal property. Experimental results showed that LGEO enhanced the antifungal properties in the films and significantly slowed down the propagation of fungi on white sliced bread. After two weeks of storage, all bread samples packed with various film samples showed fungal growth. It was found out that citral is the main component of essential oil which contributes to the inhibition of fungal growth. The incorporation of LGEO in the film decreased the O-H peak absorbance while the inclusion complex in the film increases the O-H peak absorbance and broad O-H peaks were also obtained.

    The effect of different levels of salinity on the spanning of ablated mudcrab Scylla serrata

    Four salinity treatments with salinity levels of 15 ppt, 25 ppt, 35 ppt and 45 ppt with six replicates per treatment were utilized to determine its effect on the spawning of sexually mature bilaterally ablated mud crab Scylla serrata. The crabs range in weight from 250 grams to 580 grams and carapace width from 12.5 cm. to 16.5 cm. The results of the study showed significant difference (P<0.05) in the number of days when spawning occurred. The shortest duration when spawning occurred was at 25 ppt salinity with a mean value of 9.5 days. This was followed by 35 ppt and 15 ppt salinities with mean values of 15.69 days and 19.83 days respectively. Highest number of days when spawning occurred was at 45 ppt salinity at 24 days. All crabs died 2-3 days after spawning.

    Stakeholder dynamics in the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) farmers' training Program and its impact on local farmers

    This research study investigates the collaboration of the stakeholders involved in the implementation of Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) Fanners' Training Program and its impact on the socio-economic condition of the local fanners in Municipality of Badiangan and Iloilo City. Using key informant interviews of actors involved in the program implementation and a survey of participants, the dynamics and mechanisms of the stakeholder collaboration and its effects were identified. The data revealed that the KSK was implemented through the joint efforts of SM Foundation (SMFI), regional offices of the national government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and their local counterparts in the governments of Badiangan and Iloilo City, Harbest Agribusiness Corporation, and the venues for the training program, Ephrathah Fanns and Tiu Cho Teg-Ana Ros Foundation Integrated School. These organizations from the public and private sectors worked together, each having a specific role, in conducting the training sessions of the KSK in the span of 12 weeks. The KSK was designed as a dual-tech training program composed of briefing and hands-on field practice. Accordingly, it was assessed by the participants to have a positive impact for both locales since the training program provided more knowledge on farming practices as well as generated more sources of livelihood that led to increased income and improved quality production. Also, the training became a ground for participants to form external social ties and build their networks to gain opportunities to sell their produce in local markets and in large supermarkets.

    Extraction of humic substances from vermicompost and application as component matrix for slow-release fertilizers

    Humic acid was extracted from vermicomposts (hereafter referred as VCHAs) by alkali/acid fractionation and their concentration were determined to be 54.79 (± 0.25) g HS/kg vermicompost in average. The extracted humic substances from vermicomposts were also determined to contain an average K+ of 0.0671 (± 0.0053) g K/kg vermicompost. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of crude VCHSs show similar spectral features with humic acids extracted from vermicomposted materials. The VCHSs were complex with K nutrient and encapsulated in cross-linked Ca-alginate to form vermicompost humic substance — potassium slow-release fertilizer bead (VCHS-K SRF). The synthesized VCHS-K SRF were subjected to total nutrient analysis, swelling kinetics, and slow release test to evaluate the role of nutrient compositions on its capability and capacity as slow- release fertilizer. Results for total nutrient analysis show that with an increase in nutrient loading, encapsulation efficiency is low and nutrient concentration is low. These findings imply that at neutral pH of HS solution, binding sites are saturated with Na+, therefore with having the same affinity as K+ , minimal ion exchange took place and it became difficult for K+ to bind to the HS complex. It also suggests that the amount of polymer coating and the degree of crosslinking were not sufficient to hold all nutrients. Discrepancies on the amount of released K+ was also observed on the release profile as a product of errors on acid digestion and matrix effect, this lead to elevated amounts of release by the VCHS-K SRF. The result of the release behavior profile of VCHS-K SRF shows that with an increase in enriched nutrient load, the release rate is faster. The results on the release profile of the VCHS-K SRF exhibited a parabolic and burst release. This finding in relation to the observed fluctuations on the absorbency pattern suggests that internal pressure build-up on the polymer matrix caused abrasions on the surface of the polymer coating resulting to the instantaneous release of nutrient and absorbed water. Overall, the VCHS-K SRF cannot be classified as a slow-release fertilizer. The present findings suggest the need for further improvement on the study of VCHS-K SRF from vermicompost.

    A tale of two pantries: The case of Iloilo City in time of COVID -19 pandemic

    This case study focuses on the community pantries in Barangay Mansaya- Lapuz, Lapuz and Barangay Rizal, La Paz, Iloilo City. Documentation and analysis of the two community pantries were conducted using the data gathered from Key- Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions. The simple logic model for Theory of Change (W. K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004) was used as the theoretical framework of the study and guided the analysis. The study showed that two major factors motivated the organization of the pantry. The personal motivations revolved around the organizers’ personal beliefs and principles and the societal motivations includes the increment of poverty and food insecurity experienced by community members. Resources are a vital component of the pantries as this dictates the pantries’ operation and services. The provision of food was the main goal of the pantries, while the objectives focused differently among organizers. During the operations, there are issues and challenges that occurred but were not able to affect the operation of the community pantries. The emergence and operations of the pantry affected community members through their values, practices, and change in socioeconomic conditions. The pantries also produced realizations among the organizers and barangay officials particularly on improving the access to basic needs of the members of the community. The community pantry proved to be significant in addressing food insecurity during crisis times, however the intervention is only a short-term response. Furthermore, the communities are encouraged to address food insecurity guided by needs assessment analysis, strong community engagement, regular budget allocation for the vulnerable families, strong public-partnership, and consistent monitoring and evaluation which are critical components of a community-based food security program learned from their experience.

    DPPH free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content of Talisay (Terminalia catappa) seeds

    Free radicals, a class of highly reactive molecules derived from the metabolism of oxygen is believed to be involved in many health disorders. It is generated as by-products of biological reactions or from the environment. Antioxidant-based drugs and formulations for the prevention and treatment of complex diseases have attracted a great deal of research interest in natural antioxidants. It is deemed necessary to screen medicinal plants for their antioxidant potential. Terminalia catappa is a widely-distributed tree in the Philippines with promising potentials in pharmacology. Evaluation of the in vitro antioxidant activity of methanolic, dichloromethane, and hexane extracts of Terminalia catappa seeds were carried out using two assays: 1, l-diphenyl-2-pycrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and total phenolic content assay. Results revealed that methanolic extracts showed a significantly higher free radical scavenging activity and a four-fold increase in its activity relative to the standard Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT). Furthermore, methanol, DCM and hexane extracts have high total phenolic content. Present results indicate that Terminalia catappa is a potential source of antioxidant and a good candidate for the development of new nutraceuticals for treatment of diseases. Phytochemical screening to determine the group of secondary metabolites present and toxicity evaluation for recommendation as nutritional substitutes and human consumption are recommended.

    Embryonic development and hatching rate of grouper (Epinephelus suillus) eggs incubated at different stocking densities

    Fertilized eggs of the grouper Epinephelus suillus were obtained from natural spawning of broodstock reared in a 50—t concrete tank at the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Tigbauan, Iloilo. The development of eggs incubated at three different stocking densities (50, 1OO, and 150 eggs/1) were monitored. Hatching rates in the different treatments were also determined. Fertilized eggs were floating, non—adhesive, transparent, and spherical in shape with a mean diameter range of 0.83 — 0.84 mm. The yolk was colorless, transparent, and possessed a single oil globule of 0.22 mm in diameter. The eggs have developed into the 2—cell stage 45 min after stocking. Eggs incubated at 1OO eggs/1 hatched 24 h after stocking, while hatching occurred after 27 h and 5 min at 50 eggs/1. No hatching was observed at 150 eggs/1 stocking density even after 28 h post—stocking. Water temperature and salinity during the experiment were 27 ° C and IB ppt, respectively.

    Development of probiotics determination of LD50 of previously isolated indigenous vibriolytic bacteria, Pseudomonas aerugginosa JP4, to Penaeus monodon postlarvae

    Previous studies showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa JP4 is effective in eliminating pathogenic Vibrio spp. on shrimp. However, virulence studies on this strain are lacking. Hence, this study was conducted to test the pathogenicity of P. aeruginosa JP4, using different bacterial densities of 105, 106, 107, 108, 109 and 1010 CFU/ml. These were introduced to Penaeus monodon postlarvae 13 (PL13)and early juvenile (PL25) stages. After 3 days of monitoring, mortality rates and LD50 values were determined using Reed-Muench method. Results showed that shrimps can not tolerate higher bacterial densities with LD50 of 1.15 x 107 CFU/ml and 1.12 x 108 CFU/ml for PL13 and PL25 respectively. The relatively high LD50 values on shrimp stages PL13 and PL25 indicate a low virulence of the bacterial strain. Hence, P. aeruginosa JP4 maybe used as potential vibriolytic bacteria.

    Analysis of the cost structure and profitability of small-scale catfish farming in Zarraga, Iloilo

    Catfish farming has contributed significantly to the economy of Zarraga, Iloilo. Currently however there are a few existing literature on the economic viability of the venture. This study was undertaken to bridge that gap. Nineteen small-scale catfish farmers were chosen as respondents of the study using simple random sampling method. This study evaluated the economic performance of small-scale catfish farming using cost and return analysis. Measures and indicators of profitability such as benefit-cost ratio, rate of return on capital investment, payback period and break-even points were solved to determine profitability. Sensitivity analysis was also done to examine the effect of changes in major variables on the profitability of small-scale catfish farms. Results showed that small-scale catfish farming in Zarraga, Iloilo is profitable with positive pure, gross and financial profit. The findings also indicated that it is more sensitive to changes in the market price of catfish compared to changes in the prices of major inputs such as feeds, fingerlings and labor. It is recommended that local government programs such as fingerlings dispersal and research supporting catfish farming will be carried out.
