Like mother, like daughter: Exploring the mother-daughter relationships and intergenerational early pregnancies
Bohos, Maecy Antonette C.; Delgado, Ken Ryan T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-07)
This qualitative study is a scientific investigation on the local contexts of intergenerational early pregnancy. It specifically looks into the relationships between mothers and daughters to uncover the underlying social realities that shape the phenomenon. Social Learning Theory is used to frame the study and to assist in the understanding of the mother-daughter relationships and intergenerational early pregnancy. To collect the data, this study used in-depth interviews of 5 motherdaughter dyads (N=10) from two provinces—North Cotabato and Antique. Following the interviews, the data was organized and analyzed using the approach Thematic Network Analysis. The results generated the 4 organizing themes with corresponding basic themes/subthemes: (1) lived experiences during early pregnancy with subthemes reactions to pregnancy, challenges experienced, coping mechanisms, and external support; (2) family dynamics with subthemes family status, physical and emotional distance, and parental monitoring; (3) mother-daughter communication with subthemes conversations, and sexual and reproductive health communication; and (4) daughter's sexual and reproductive health knowledge and behaviors with subthemes sources of SRH education, level of knowledge, and early sexual initiation. The study's findings suggest the need for parent-based or family-centered interventions regarding adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Early pregnancy becoming intergenerational among Filipino families further encourages the cycle of poverty.

Bantigue, Aleli (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)
This study was undertaken to identify the areas of household decision-making where married women of nuclear families participate. The variables involved in this study were 'educational attainment of women, ''their income, and the different areas of household decision-making. The primary instrument used in this study was an interview schedule to gather necessary data. The barangay of Mat-y, Miag-ao, Iloilo, was chosen as the research site. The respondents of the study are 59 married women of nuclear families as 50% sample. A random sampling method was employed. The chi-square test was utilised primarily in data analysis to determine the presence ofa relationship between variables. More so, simple frequency and percentage counts were employed to make the presentation of results comprehensible. With the use of frequency and percentages, it was found out that married women are involved in every area of decision-making in the household, namely financial-economic and socio-moral concerns. in financial-economic areas, women are more involved most particularly inhousehold budgeting of everyday expenses. In sociomoral concerns, they are most involved specifically in the care of children. Likewise, the results of the chi-square test showed that no relationship is evident between educational attainment and women’s involvement in the decision—making process in both financial-economic and socio-moral related areas, Furthermore, as to income as the other variable, two decision-areas were found to be affected by income. These were under the financial-economic related aspects of decision- mooting specifically in borrowing of money and paying of loans or credits, moreover, the other decision areas tested showed no relationship between income and women’s participation in the decision-making process.

Family planning services availed by adolescent mothers in selected barangays in the Municipality of Miag-ao, Iloilo
Cabrias, Clement C.; Sajonia, Twinkle T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)
The study aims to know the various family planning services availed by adolescent mothers in selected barangays in Miag-ao, Iloilo. Likewise, it deals with family planning services that are available to adolescent mothers and the factors that may affect the availment of the family planning services. The study was conducted in three selected barangays in Miag-ao namely, Barangay Aguiauan, Barangay Tumagboc and Barangay Valencia. To determine the total number of respondents, their names are listed from each barangay health station. Using the complete enumeration method, ten adolescent mothers were taken as respondents of the study. The interview schedule comprised of open-ended and close-ended questions was used for gathering data and a separate key-informant questionnaire was used to get the profile of each barangay health station and to gather information about their existing family planning services. Important findings show that there is no specific family planning program directed to adolescents but for the married, adult population only, yet adolescent mothers can be provided family planning services if they seek for it. However, there are only limited choices on the family planning methods offered by the barangay health station, exclusive only on pills and DMPA and sometimes condom. In general, adolescent mothers find little difficulty in availing family planning services from the barangay health station but their decision to visit the area and whether to use contraceptives or not and what to choose are affected by several factors. Information on what services are available and their knowledge of the methods are the significant factors that affect their decision. Moreover, their partners are also an important factor in their decision to avail family planning services. It was found that adolescent mothers solicit the opinion of their partners before engaging in family planning.
