Ding, ang poster!: A reception analysis of Filipino Gen Z on teleserye posters
Caleza, Candido Jose G.; Bacnutan , Zoe Milabeth B.; Roquillas, Sunday Vince T. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-06)
Posters are one of the promotional tools for creating awareness for an upcoming teleserye since they are the teleserye's official identity. By using the eight (8) design elements, particularly line, shape, texture, scale, tone, space, color, and typography, one may create a successful artwork. Accordingly, three (3) posters of Justin Besana, a graphic designer from ABS-CBN Star Cinema and Film Restoration, were used in this study, specifically Dirty Linen (2023), Darna (2022), and Ang Probinsyano (2021). in examining the Filipino Gen Zs’ perceptions of these visual elements in understanding the teleserye's themes and their motivation to watch the teleserye. Using purposive sampling, five (5) senior high school students from Miagao National High School were selected and interviewed in-depth using the crafted questionnaire based on the design elements, wherein the similarities and differences of their answers were analyzed using reception analysis. The study revealed that these elements were helpful in creating the respondents' prenoted (based on their experiences) or contextual meanings (based on other related elements) towards the posters. They were able to identity the teleserye’s themes and relate them to current Philippine issues, which concludes that through visualization, the respondents were able to make their own interpretation of the elements, resulting in them being either motivated or not to watch the whole teleserye. Thus, this study provides valuable insights for Communication and Media Studies students, graphic designers, and the public to better understand visual communication and literacy, as well as valuing the creative processes and visual storytelling through teleserye posters.

Determination of instrument detection limit and method detection limit of Varian 55B flame atomic absorption spectrometer for cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese and zinc using sips-10 and manual sample introduction methods
Calawigan, Roland Joseph C. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-04)
Determination of detection limits is an essential measure of performance for a quantitative laboratory, method or analyst. In this study, the Instrument Detection Limit (IDL) and Method Detection Limit (MDL) of F-AAS Varian 55B for cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese and zinc were determined using the SIPS-10 and manual sample introduction methods. For IDL determinations, EPA’s SW-846 method (Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste and Physical/Chemical Methods) was employed for both sample introduction methods where deionized water was analyzed for twenty times for three non-consecutive days. MDL determinations were done based on the definition given by the United States Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR part 136, Appendix B - Definition and Procedure for the Determination of the Method Detection Limit). In this procedure, MDLs were estimated by calculating the standard deviation from the analysis of a standard solution containing the analyte with a concentration determined from the estimated detection limit, which was also analyzed for twenty times. Results showed that for the determination of IDL, all of the elements have lower values (Cd 0.000887 mg/L, Cr 0.00435 mg/L, Cu 0.000128 mg/L, Fe 0.000816 mg/L, Pb 0.000742 mg/L, Mn 0.000985 mg/L, Zn 0.000585 mg/L) for the manual method than the SIPS-10 method (Cd 0.00399 mg/L, Cr 0.0150 mg/L, Cu 0.00222 mg/L, Fe 0.00913 mg/L, Pb 0.0217 mg/L, Mn 0.00132 mg/L, Zn 0.00445 mg/L). For MDL, the results showed variations for both the two sample introduction methods. The MDL values for cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese and zinc are 0.0374 mg/L, 0.0235 mg/L, 0.00203 mg/L, 0.0197 mg/L, 0.0805 mg/L, 0.00325 mg/L and 0.00686 mg/L in the manual method, respectively and 0.0101 mg/L, 0.0429 mg/L, 0.00280 mg/L, 0.0186 mg/L, 0.19 7 mg/L, 0.00312 mg/L and 0.0103 mg/L in the SIPS-10 method, respectively. Both methods have comparable precision for copper, iron, manganese and zinc determinations while SIPS-10 method is more precise for cadmium, chromium, and lead analysis.

Calawag, Jerolet E. (Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-10)
Trace metals such as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) as well as the common impurities in salt like magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), sulfate, moisture, matter insoluble in water (MIW) and matter insoluble in acid (MIA) were analyzed using spectrophotometric (Flame Atomic Absorption &UV-vis Spectrophotometers) and gravimetric methods. Results showed that percentage concentrations of magnesium and calcium were significantly higher in sample A (Tibiao table salt) than in sample B (Leganes table salt) at 1- percent level of confidence. The percentage concentrations of MIW, MIA, moisture and sulfate were significantly higher in sample B than in sample A. Results of Uv-vis absorption spectroscopy indicated that both chromium and cadmium were absent in both samples while the lead concentrations in samples A and B were 10.9190 and 11.4831 ppm respectively. At 5% level of probability, the lead concentrations of both samples did not differ from each other. Using another technique of analyzing trace metals, the flame atomic absorption spectroscopy based on flame atomization, different results were obtained. Lead concentration in samples A and B were 6.4874 and 9.4977-ppm salt respectively. At 5 % level of probability, sample B had higher lead concentration than in sample A. The lead concentrations in both samples were all higher than 0.015 ppm, the allowable maximum limit of lead in water, or any drinks. The over-all results showed that sample B had higher contaminants than in sample A.

Calar, Helen Grace A.; Donguines, Khristian Mark (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)
The research looks into the success of Filipino romantic comedy blockbuster films from another perspective, which is the kilig factor, by analysing the relationship-oriented themes embedded in the films. Kilig is defined as the flutter of excitement caused by romance while relationship- oriented themes refer to the verbal and non-verbal portrayals of romance by the lead characters. The subject of the research is the romantic comedy blockbuster film series A Very Special Love shown to Filipino audiences in 2008 to 2013. The objectives of the study were analyze the relationship-oriented themes presented in the films and the level of kilig it achieved. This study is grounded on the concepts of Berio’s SMCR Model of Communication by David K. Berlo, specifically giving emphasis on the two factors under Message which are the element and treatment to analyze the content of the film. This study used a descriptive research design and employed content analysis as the method. In order to analyze the content of the film series, the researchers formulated a codebook that was derived from the concept of relationship-oriented themes developed by Johnson and Holmes (2009) and the “Levels of Kilig” by Director Olivia Lamasan of Star Magic. The results of the content analysis shows that there are a total of 231 occurrences of relationship-oriented themes in the three films combined, and the second film You Changed My Life got the highest tally of 96 counts. In terms of relationship-oriented themes, gazing and smiling got the most number of occurrences with 43 instances. In conclusion, the film series A Very Special Love reached the highest level of kilig, Level 3 - kilig na nagpapatili, which theoretically proves that the film series is a successful Filipino romantic comedy blockbuster film.

This study entitled “Char!”: The Language of Contemporary Adam, The Acceptability of Gay Lingo Among Senior Male Students in a Male Dominated University presents how the gay community is slowly being accepted in the society one step at a time. Chapter 1 presents the history of gays as they battle for societal discrimination and the current situation of the LGBT community in the country. Also, it discusses the aim of the study with the following objectives to seek for the critical areas on the behaviour of males towards gay language and to know how these males interpret the gay lingo and use it on a daily basis. The Review of Related Literature of the study involves the paradigm of sexuality in the Philippines which discusses the issue of gender roles and how people perceive homosexuals and homosexual relationships in the country. This chapter is also about the development of gay language which diverted from mockery and humiliation to it being openly used not only by homosexuals but also by straight men. Chapter 3 presents the subjects of the study who are the senior male students of JBLFMU, the research method used which is survey-based, the research design and data gathering procedures, research instruments, data analysis and the statistical tools used. The researchers measured the respondents’ exposure, knowledge, attitude, usage and practice of the language to determine their acceptability of gay lingo. Chapter 4 involves the results and discussions of the study. This chapter reveals that the respondents are highly exposed to the language. They also have a high level of knowledge, and positive attitude towards gay lingo. However, their usage and practice got the lowest percentage on the study. The final chapter includes the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the study which states that the gay lingo in a male-dominated university is accepted. The acceptance of gay culture and their language in a male-dominated community implies that men are consequently embracing the change that is happening in society nowadays. They are becoming more open about learning the culture of the once called minority group—the gay community.

Processing of sweet potato (Ipomoea Batatas var Bnas) into flour for bread making
Cajilig, Ma. Madeline R. (Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1984-04)
Sweet potatoes of Bnas variety were processed into flour and its chemical composition such as moisture, fat, ash, crude fiber, protein and carbohydrates content were analyzed. Sweet potato flour has approximately 12.41% protein and an average value of 76.7% carbohydrates. The sweet potato flour was used as wheat flour extender where "pan de sal” was the test bread prepared from 50%, 40% and 30% formulation of sweet potato flour and wheat flour. These three formulations were compared with the control sample made of 100% wheat flour. A straight dough method was used in the preparation of the samples. Sensory evaluation test revealed that "pan de sal” was acceptable in all levels of substitution at 5% level of significance. This would mean that 50%, 40% and 30% sweet potato flour substitution is possible. It was also found that the samples with sweet potato flour produces more yield of "pan de sal” compared to the control sample. The cost involved in the control is considerably higher than the experimental samples.
