Item Ding, ang poster!: A reception analysis of Filipino Gen Z on teleserye postersCaleza, Candido Jose G.; Bacnutan , Zoe Milabeth B.; Roquillas, Sunday Vince T. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-06)Posters are one of the promotional tools for creating awareness for an upcoming teleserye since they are the teleserye's official identity. By using the eight (8) design elements, particularly line, shape, texture, scale, tone, space, color, and typography, one may create a successful artwork. Accordingly, three (3) posters of Justin Besana, a graphic designer from ABS-CBN Star Cinema and Film Restoration, were used in this study, specifically Dirty Linen (2023), Darna (2022), and Ang Probinsyano (2021). in examining the Filipino Gen Zs’ perceptions of these visual elements in understanding the teleserye's themes and their motivation to watch the teleserye. Using purposive sampling, five (5) senior high school students from Miagao National High School were selected and interviewed in-depth using the crafted questionnaire based on the design elements, wherein the similarities and differences of their answers were analyzed using reception analysis. The study revealed that these elements were helpful in creating the respondents' prenoted (based on their experiences) or contextual meanings (based on other related elements) towards the posters. They were able to identity the teleserye’s themes and relate them to current Philippine issues, which concludes that through visualization, the respondents were able to make their own interpretation of the elements, resulting in them being either motivated or not to watch the whole teleserye. Thus, this study provides valuable insights for Communication and Media Studies students, graphic designers, and the public to better understand visual communication and literacy, as well as valuing the creative processes and visual storytelling through teleserye posters.Item Kilig factor: The relationship-oriented themes in a very special love film seriesCalar, Helen Grace A.; Donguines, Khristian Mark (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)The research looks into the success of Filipino romantic comedy blockbuster films from another perspective, which is the kilig factor, by analysing the relationship-oriented themes embedded in the films. Kilig is defined as the flutter of excitement caused by romance while relationship- oriented themes refer to the verbal and non-verbal portrayals of romance by the lead characters. This study used a descriptive research design and employed content analysis as the method. In order to analyze the content of the film series, the researchers formulated a codebook that was derived from the concept of relationship-oriented themes developed by Johnson and Holmes (2009) and the “Levels of Kilig” by Director Olivia Lamasan of Star Magic. The results of the content analysis shows that there are a total of 231 occurrences of relationship-oriented themes in the three films combined, and the second film You Changed My Life got the highest tally of 96 counts. In terms of relationship-oriented themes, gazing and smiling got the most number of occurrences with 43 instances. In conclusion, the film series A Very Special Love reached the highest level of kilig, Level 3 - kilig na nagpapatili, which theoretically proves that the film series is a successful Filipino romantic comedy blockbuster film.Item CHAR!: The language of contemporary Adam: Acceptability of gay lingo among senior male students in a male-dominated UniversityCalantas, Ma. Emmalyn T.; Gasangarin, Jed Moirah G.; Ilinon, Wendel C. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-05)This study entitled “Char!”: The Language of Contemporary Adam, The Acceptability of Gay Lingo Among Senior Male Students in a Male Dominated University presents how the gay community is slowly being accepted in the society one step at a time. The Review of Related Literature of the study involves the paradigm of sexuality in the Philippines which discusses the issue of gender roles and how people perceive homosexuals and homosexual relationships in the country. This chapter is also about the development of gay language which diverted from mockery and humiliation to it being openly used not only by homosexuals but also by straight men. Chapter 3 presents the subjects of the study who are the senior male students of JBLFMU, the research method used which is survey-based, the research design and data gathering procedures, research instruments, data analysis and the statistical tools used. The researchers measured the respondents’ exposure, knowledge, attitude, usage and practice of the language to determine their acceptability of gay lingo. Chapter 4 involves the results and discussions of the study. This chapter reveals that the respondents are highly exposed to the language. They also have a high level of knowledge, and positive attitude towards gay lingo. However, their usage and practice got the lowest percentage on the study. The final chapter includes the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the study which states that the gay lingo in a male-dominated university is accepted. Patrol ng Pilipino emerged as one of the Philippines’ pioneering online media outlets consistently producing short-form vertical videos. Drawing from the principles of the Diffusion of Innovations (DOI) theory, this paper examines how Patrol ng Pilipino integrated short-form vertical videos into its news content creation on TikTok. Through a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with seven participants (two news authorities and five reporters) and Patrol ng Pilipino's five most-viewed TikTok videos (April 2023 - March 2024), this research found that Patrol ng Pilipino recognizes short-form vertical videos' adaptability to evolving news consumption habits and audience preferences. This highlights a distinct contrast to traditional media and underscores the need for a journalistic presence on TikTok. Additionally, the ABS-CBN franchise loss and traditional media consumption decline prompted the organization to integrate short-form vertical videos in news content creation. With this, Patrol ng Pilipino implemented a measured approach to establish a journalistic presence, prioritizing journalistic integrity while leveraging TikTok's affordances for audience engagement. The study also revealed advantages and disadvantages associated with integrating new media formats into journalistic practice, suggesting the dual nature of TikTok. Lastly, the findings highlight the complex opportunities short-form vertical video platforms present for news production. News organizations must adapt to this changing landscape, where news consumption habits increasingly favor digital formats. However, this adaptation necessitates a careful balancing act: journalists must uphold core journalistic ethics while embracing the demands of new platforms.Item Online masterpieces: DeviantArt as a platform of self-expression for FilipinosCagalitan, Harvey B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)The research looks into the relationship between the male K-Drama viewers' level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and their concept of masculinity and gender performativity, which are both in terms of appearance and demeanor. The flower boy image or the kkonminam represents a soft version of masculinity, which holds the balance of having good looks and proper demeanor, and is often seen portrayed by male K-Drama protagonists. This study is mainly grounded on Gerbner and Gross' Cultivation Theory, which gives emphasis to the media's impact on viewers' attitude and perception based on their amount of exposure. Judith Butler's Gender Performativity then serves as a supporting theory as it gives emphasis to an individual's understanding of gender and how they conduct themselves, as well as the media's role in producing and transmitting ideals of masculinity. This study uses a quantitative research design and uses the correlational method. In the analysis and interpretation of data, Spearman's Rank Correlation is used to answer the study's research problem. The results show that all the variables have a very weak positive relationship. Amongst the variables mentioned, only the level of exposure and gender performativity in terms of demeanor has statistical significance. Overall, the study concludes K-Dramas may have played a role in the respondents' concept of masculinity and gender performativity although there may be external variables involved, and that the media is a gateway for the presentation and recognition of various forms of masculinities.Item Exposure of Ilonggo viewers to "My husband's lover" and "Dading" and their attitude towards homosexual parenthoodBriones, Marie Jeanje; Nagallo, Larry John (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)This study explores the relationship between the level of exposure of Ilonggo viewers to gay themed dramas “My Husband’s Lover” and “Dading” and their attitude towards homosexual parenthood in terms of condemnation and tolerance, contact, morality, and stereotypes. The sampling methodology used was Probability to Proportional to Size Sampling design, and to determine the barangays Cumulative Sum was utilized. Results showed that attitude scores towards homosexual parenthood significantly differs across level of exposure to gay themed dramas based on ANOVA result (p-value<0.001). Pairwise comparison further indicates that viewers with low exposure to gay themed dramas also have significantly lower attitude scores as compared to viewers with medium exposure and high exposure. However, no significant difference was found in attitude score between viewers with medium exposure and high exposure. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)The picture-superiority effect in candy magazine advertisements based on consumers’ level of brand recall is a study aimed towards helping advertisers formulate effective strategies in magazine advertising and provide insight for fellow researchers on the picture-superiority effect and its relative effects on consumer behavior. In this study, the researchers focused primarily on proving the prevalence of the picture-superiority effect in Candy magazine advertisements. They surveyed 65 female freshmen in UPV-Miagao, each of whom were given a copy of the April 2010 issue of Candy magazine one day prior to the survey. Data gathered were analyzed through frequency count and content analysis of the top three most recalled advertisements and three unrecalled advertisements based on pictorial and verbal elements and the sizes of both. Results showed that the picture-superiority effect is indeed prevalent but discovered that it is not exclusive to brand recall and may also be affected by brand familiarity or past purchase decisions. The latter are then recommended by the researchers as basis for further research.
