Item Comparison of direct microscopy and concentration techniques using household bleach for the detection of acid-fast bacilli in sputumBernabe, John Marvin S.; Biaoco, Beverly G.; Castillanes, Melvic A.; Fernandez, Ia Jean F.; Geraldoy, Ruffa V.; Molina, Ryge Albert D.; Pluma, Zyra April D.; Que, Agnes Karen B.; Servidad, Mercy Jeane C.; Tamayo, Kyria Mae Marre P. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03-29)Several published studies have demonstrated that the sedimentation and centrifugation concentration techniques which utilize sodium hypochlorite are more efficient in detecting acid fast bacilli in sputum smears compared to the conventional direct smear method. This study was conducted to (1) compare the proportion of AFB-positive samples by direct microscopy with the household bleach centrifugation concentration technique; (2) compare the proportion of AFB-positive samples by direct microscopy with the household bleach sedimentation concentration technique;(3) compare the proportion of AFB-positive samples by household bleach sedimentation with the centrifugation concentration techniques; and (4) compare the cost of the direct smear method, centrifugation concentration technique, and sedimentation concentration technique for detection of AFB. Sputum specimens were collected from TB-DOTS clinics in Miag-ao and San Joaquin, Iloilo and from Medicus laboratories in Iloilo City. The specimens were then processed through the direct smear method, centrifugation concentration method, and sedimentation concentration method. Out of 174 sputum samples included in this study, results revealed that (1) there was no significant difference in the proportions of AFB-positive slides detected using the direct microscopy and centrifugation concentration technique; (2) there was no significant difference in the proportions of AFB-positive slides detected using the direct microscopy and sedimentation concentration technique; (3) there was no significant difference in the proportions of AFB-positive slides detected using the centrifugation and the sedimentation concentration techniques; and (4) simple cost analysis of the three methods suggests that the direct smear method is the most cost efficient. The findings indicate that whichever method is used would yield almost the same proportions of AFB-positive slides. Internal quality control should be maintained throughout the laboratory work to obtain reliable results, as it is the manner of processing that determines the outcome of this study and its validity.Item Karyotype analysis of Kutsay Allium odoratum L. (Alliales: Alliaceae)Bermejo, Jo-am Asis (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1995-05)The C-metaphase count of Allium odoratum revealed that the chromosome number was 2n=32, consisting of the following centromeric groups based on Levan's method of chromosome classification: Group I chromosomes with subterminal centromeres (1 pair); Group II with submedian centromeres (2 pairs), and Group III with median centromeres (13 pairs). The mean total lengths of chromosome ranged from 8.534±0.504-16.624±0.600 μ. Mitotic index for the species was found to be 10.87%.Item A comparative study of the microorganisms found in the vaginal flora of pill and non pill user by Pap smearBayate, Aimee Sarena L. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1994-03)This study was conducted to identify and classify the organisms that are present in pill users and non-pill users. It will determine if taking of pills cause changes in the microflora of pill (combined) users and will describe the profile of both pill and non-pill users. The study use 200 prepared smears of the vagina, divided equally to both pill and non-pill users. The slides were collected at Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial Hospital, Lambunao, Iloilo by the family planning physician with the help of the medical technologist. The profile of the patients were also gathered to provide more information about the subjects. The organisms were identified according to their basic morphological characteristic. The results indicate that bacilli which is the normal inhabitant of the vagina is present in 200 samples. Cocci is present in both groups but occure more in women who are pill users. In the parasite group, Trichomonas vaginalis is present in women who are pill user and Candida is present in both groups but occur more in women who are pill users. The test for the estimation of the difference between two proportions reveal that the z values obtained from the experiment falls between the critical region which has a value of 2.58. Such a value indicate that the prevalence of parasites and bacteria are equal among pill and non-pill users.Item Marketing of milkfish fry in Pandan, AntiqueBayaras, Dinah A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1995-03)This study describes and analyses the marketing, channels, functions/practices, costs, margins, and shares received by each marketing channel, net price of milk-fish fry received by fry catchers, and the problems encountered in the marketing of milkfish fry in Pandan, Antique. Using a separate interview schedule for each kind of respondent, 40 fry catchers are asked about their latest catch on a per-day basis, and the ten middlemen were interviewed about their last transaction/s. Results showed that from the fry catchers, the 4,218 milkfish fry are sold to three types of middlemen: the commissionman, wholesaler and facilitative organization. Fifty-nine percent of the milkfish fry go to the facilitative organisation, twenty-three percent to the commissionman, and eighteen percent to the wholesaler. From the three types of middlemen, only 86 7, of what they’ve purchased were sold of the 3,610 milkfish fry sold, 55% of it go to the wholesaler/retailer. Others go outside of the municipality. All of the wholesaler/retailer purchases go outside of the municipality. The pre-sale practices performed by the fry catchers include gathering, counting, sorting, storing, and transporting, while the middlemen perform counting, sorting, storing, packaging, and transporting. In performing the five pre-sale practices by the fry catchers, the cost of P16.95 is incurred. These are all noncash costs. The cost of P4.0012 for the depreciation cost of marketing investment items and the mortality cost of P12.95 - This includes the allowance for mortality given to the buyer as well as the actual deaths of milkfish fry - are the composition of the marketing costs. The net. The price of milkfish fry is P0.24/piece. But 23% of the opportunity cost of labor was forgone. The pre-sale practices performed by each type of middleman involved in the marketing of milkfish fry accumulated a distinct cost for each type. For the commissionman, he has a total of P87,3367 marketing cost. The wholesaler incurred — 117.996, the facilitative organization has P570.4867, and the wholesaler/retailer has Pl,365.7987. The middleman who has the highest net return in terms of percentage of average revenue is the commissionman (70.62%), followed by the wholesaler (69.76%), then the facilitative organization (57.89%), and the smallest is received by the wholesaler/retailer (37.54). followed by the facilitative middleman (P0.21), and then the In terms of gross margin received by each type of middleman, the highest shareholder is the wholesaler /retailer (P0.28), then the wholesaler (PC, 23), and the commissionman (P0.06). The problems of poor transportation facilities, insufficient capital, communications in pricing, excessive mortality rates, and the absence of a buyer are the bottlenecks in the marketing system. These problems produce a bad outcome for the middlemen by increasing their losses.Item The relationship between selected social factors and adolescent pregnancy in Iloilo CityBautista, Joseph Raymund I.; Funclara, Melinda Tordesillas (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)This study attempts to ascertain if there is a relationship between selected social factors and adolescent pregnancy. Specifically, it aims to find out if school engagement, parental supervision, foster and kinship care, religiosity, contraceptive knowledge, and mass media exposure is related to adolescent pregnancy. The researchers hypothesized that there is a relationship between these selected factors and adolescent pregnancy. Adolescent mothers between 14 to 21 years old and were either pregnant or had given birth before December 2003 from three barangays in Iloilo City were interviewed. The gathered data were then subjected to Yates corrected chi-square test of independence to find out if there is any relationship between the dependent and independent variables. It was found out that school engagement, parental supervision, level of religiosity, exposure to mass media, and knowledge in contraceptive use have no relationship with adolescent pregnancy. On the other hand, foster and kinship care was found to have a relationship with adolescent pregnancy. For future research directions, the researchers recommend to those who are interested in adolescent pregnancy to explore the interrelationship between the factors that contribute to adolescent pregnancy. The researchers further suggest that other factors, such as economic status, be explored. Increasing the number of respondents might also be helpful. Finally, the possibility that staying away from compromising situations with the opposite sex is an effective factor to prevent adolescent pregnancy could be an interesting topic.Item Decision making in the practice of birth control in a rural communityBarrios, Ritchie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)This is a study on the decision-making pattern of couples in the use of birth control in a rural community. The study sought to determine: 1. Who the decision-maker is in the couple structure: 2. how the decision to practice was reached by them and 3. what are the basis for the choice of a particular birth control method. Based on the findings it was concluded that for the couples in Brgy. Tuburan, Pototan, Iloilo it was both the husband and the wife who decided that they will practice birth control. This is contrary to the popular notion that it is the husband who decides. It was also found out that the midwife who was at the same time the family planning implementor, played a major role in the decision to practice birth control. Having reached the decision to practice birth control, certain considerations like convenience, effectiveness, no side effects, etc. were taken by the couples in the selection of the method to adopt. It was however found out that the final choice of the method to be used was made by the family planning implementor. It is interesting to note, however, that in the barangay only forty-one couples out of the one hundred seventy have or are practicing birth control. This is attributed to the fact that the family planning implementors failed to get the message across to a larger audience. The mothers' class which was used as a strategy to attract couples to take interest in family planning failed to reach large segment of the population.Item Isolation and partial characterization of globulin from Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) tubersBarbosa, May R. (Division of Physical Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-04)Soluble globulin was isolated using an extraction buffer (0.4 M NaCl in 35 mM potassium phosphate buffer, pH 7.6 with 0.02% Na azide). The isolated globulin was subjected to solubility tests with different NaCl concentrations. It has the highest solubility in 1.25M NaCl (1.09%), but no significant differences existed among the NaCl concentrations by analysis using one-way ANOVA at a = 0.05. Three major bands existed at LOOM NaCl dissolved globulin with molecular weight ranges of 28-33kDa, 38- 43kDa, and 65-70kDa relative to BSA. Two of these bands (38-43kDa and 65-70kDa) were observed in 0.50M and 0.75M NaCl soluble globulin. The 1.25M and 1.50M NaCl concentrations gave a single band (28-33kDa) each, while no clear bands were observed in other NaCl concentrations. Amino acid analysis revealed glutamic acid (12.09%) as the most abundant amino acid component of cassava globulin. Nine (9) essential amino acids were present. Of these nine, lysine (10.50%) is the most predominant. Cystine (0.39%) has the lowest percentage, followed by methionine (1.76%).Item Isolation and purification and bioactive components from the fruit of Morinda citrifoliaBarbarona, Hazel M. (Division of Phyisical Sciences and Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-10)Phytochemical screening done on the fruit of “noni” Morinda citrifolia revealed the presence of saponins and the absence of alkaloids. Sequential extraction of active components of noni using n-hexane, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate solvents gave yields of 0.09%, 0.31% and 0.11% as yields respectively. Crude methanolic concentrate of the noni fruit was subjected into four bioactivity tests. Toxicity bioassay showed 251.19 g/ml to be the LC50. Antimicrobial bioassay showed that S. aureus, B. subtilis, E. coli, and P. auruginosa organisms have no activity against the crude methanolic concentrate. In analgesic bioassay, the crude methanolic concentrate (16.37) is no better or has the same activity with the positive control mefenamic acid (17.51) based on the percentage reduction in squirms of the Swiss Websters mice. Antispasmodic activity showed that the crude methanolic concentrate of the fruit (55.47%) is as active as the positive control, loperamide (58.02%). In the three fractions, antispasmodic activity of n-hexane and dichloromethane have greater effect than the positive control (loperamide) while ethyl acetate has the same activity with it. The percentages traveled by charcoal in n-hexane (39.929) and dichloromethane (45.908) were lower than that of the positive control, loperamide (60.130) and ethyl acetate fraction (48.352). Antispasmodic bioassay on n-hexane purified through Vacuum Liquid Chromatography showed that the nine fractions (F1-F9) showed no significant difference with the positive control. Thin Layer Chromatography showed the presence of mono-, di-, and triterpenes; steroid glycosides and saponins in the noni fruit extract.Item A content analysis of 12 episodes of the radio comedy-drama Toyang ErmitanyaBantiquete, Theola H.; Galanza, Siena Therese M.; Gersabalino, Jeniffer G. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)This study “A Content Analysis of the Radio-Comedy Drama Toyang Ermitanya” aims:(1) to identify the various issues presented in the 12 episodes of the drama (Episodes 256-267, aired in July 2003); (2) to classify the issues into different categories such as political, social, economic, religious, educational and others (gender issues); (3) to determine which of the six categories are frequently raised, and; (4) to determine whether or not the drama reflects social reality. The researchers used a sell-devised descriptive code sheet in analyzing and categorizing the issues that are presented in the drama. They set six categories where each issue would fall. Percentage distribution was used to determine which among the six categories is frequently raised. They also provided actual samples of the issues under each category, quoted in the Hiligaynon language with its corresponding translation in English. Researched on the events that happened in July 2003--the time when the 12 episodes were aired over Bombo Rady Iloilo— were then related to the issues that were presented in the 12 episodes of the drama in order to determine whether or not Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. This study is significant for it provides an in-depth treatment of the societal issues, thus, making people aware of the prevalent issues confronting the society at the same time. Second, it serves as an important tool in analyzing the role of media in presenting various issues of the society in a manner that almost everyone can relate to. In the process, it will guide media practitioners in producing a satirical program that will catch the interest, and at the same time, meet the need of the society in terms of information and entertainment. The researchers identified 163 issues that were raised in the 12 episodes of the drama Toyang Ermitanya. Results of the study show that social issues are frequently raised in the drama. It is followed by political, economic, religious, others (gender issues), and finally, educational which got a zero percentage. Using the Cone-effect theory, the study shows that Radio Comedy-Drama Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. The study would have been better if the researchers interviewed the producer/ scriptwriter of Toyang Ermitanya. For future researchers, the researchers recommend that research on another radio drama be done to further validate this study’s claim that radio dramas are not only for entertainment, but, are also a good source of information and reflect social realities.Item Married women's participation in household decision-makingBantigue, Aleli (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)This study was undertaken to identify the areas of household decision-making where married women of nuclear families participate. The variables involved in this study were 'educational attainment of women, ''their income, and the different areas of household decision-making. The primary instrument used in this study was an interview schedule to gather necessary data. The barangay of Mat-y, Miag-ao, Iloilo, was chosen as the research site. The respondents of the study are 59 married women of nuclear families as 50% sample. A random sampling method was employed. The chi-square test was utilised primarily in data analysis to determine the presence ofa relationship between variables. More so, simple frequency and percentage counts were employed to make the presentation of results comprehensible. With the use of frequency and percentages, it was found out that married women are involved in every area of decision-making in the household, namely financial-economic and socio-moral concerns. in financial-economic areas, women are more involved most particularly inhousehold budgeting of everyday expenses. In sociomoral concerns, they are most involved specifically in the care of children. Likewise, the results of the chi-square test showed that no relationship is evident between educational attainment and women’s involvement in the decision—making process in both financial-economic and socio-moral related areas, Furthermore, as to income as the other variable, two decision-areas were found to be affected by income. These were under the financial-economic related aspects of decision- mooting specifically in borrowing of money and paying of loans or credits, moreover, the other decision areas tested showed no relationship between income and women’s participation in the decision-making process.
