    CHAR!: The language of contemporary Adam: Acceptability of gay lingo among senior male students in a male-dominated University

    This study entitled “Char!”: The Language of Contemporary Adam, The Acceptability of Gay Lingo Among Senior Male Students in a Male Dominated University presents how the gay community is slowly being accepted in the society one step at a time. Chapter 1 presents the history of gays as they battle for societal discrimination and the current situation of the LGBT community in the country. Also, it discusses the aim of the study with the following objectives to seek for the critical areas on the behaviour of males towards gay language and to know how these males interpret the gay lingo and use it on a daily basis. The Review of Related Literature of the study involves the paradigm of sexuality in the Philippines which discusses the issue of gender roles and how people perceive homosexuals and homosexual relationships in the country. This chapter is also about the development of gay language which diverted from mockery and humiliation to it being openly used not only by homosexuals but also by straight men. Chapter 3 presents the subjects of the study who are the senior male students of JBLFMU, the research method used which is survey-based, the research design and data gathering procedures, research instruments, data analysis and the statistical tools used. The researchers measured the respondents’ exposure, knowledge, attitude, usage and practice of the language to determine their acceptability of gay lingo. Chapter 4 involves the results and discussions of the study. This chapter reveals that the respondents are highly exposed to the language. They also have a high level of knowledge, and positive attitude towards gay lingo. However, their usage and practice got the lowest percentage on the study. The final chapter includes the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the study which states that the gay lingo in a male-dominated university is accepted. The acceptance of gay culture and their language in a male-dominated community implies that men are consequently embracing the change that is happening in society nowadays. They are becoming more open about learning the culture of the once called minority group—the gay community.

    Written words: A descriptive study on the uses and gratifications of wattpad writers

    This descriptive study is on the uses and gratifications of Filipino romance writers for writing in Wattpad, a free online writing community. The study is best explained by the Uses and Gratifications Theory of Blumler and Katz which states that specific forms of media content are sought out by the audience members based upon their individual need satisfactions. An online survey of 37 Filipino Wattpad romance writers shows the main use for writing in Wattpad is diversion or escape from the daily stress. The strongest gratification satisfied by Wattpad is affective or expression of emotion, pleasure, and aesthetic experiences. The result indicates that gender is a major influential factor in their uses and gratifications gained from writing in Wattpad. Wattpad empowers people who love writing not only because it is a free writing community but more so because it gives writers a sense of freedom from stress and freedom to express themselves.
