    Ding, ang poster!: A reception analysis of Filipino Gen Z on teleserye posters

    Posters are one of the promotional tools for creating awareness for an upcoming teleserye since they are the teleserye's official identity. By using the eight (8) design elements, particularly line, shape, texture, scale, tone, space, color, and typography, one may create a successful artwork. Accordingly, three (3) posters of Justin Besana, a graphic designer from ABS-CBN Star Cinema and Film Restoration, were used in this study, specifically Dirty Linen (2023), Darna (2022), and Ang Probinsyano (2021). in examining the Filipino Gen Zs’ perceptions of these visual elements in understanding the teleserye's themes and their motivation to watch the teleserye. Using purposive sampling, five (5) senior high school students from Miagao National High School were selected and interviewed in-depth using the crafted questionnaire based on the design elements, wherein the similarities and differences of their answers were analyzed using reception analysis. The study revealed that these elements were helpful in creating the respondents' prenoted (based on their experiences) or contextual meanings (based on other related elements) towards the posters. They were able to identity the teleserye’s themes and relate them to current Philippine issues, which concludes that through visualization, the respondents were able to make their own interpretation of the elements, resulting in them being either motivated or not to watch the whole teleserye. Thus, this study provides valuable insights for Communication and Media Studies students, graphic designers, and the public to better understand visual communication and literacy, as well as valuing the creative processes and visual storytelling through teleserye posters.

    Breaking news norms and formats: An analysis of Patrol ng Pilipino's integration of short form vertical videos in news content creation on Tiktok

    In response to the looming necessity to adapt to the changing media landscape. Patrol ng Pilipino emerged as one of the Philippines’ pioneering online media outlets consistently producing short-form vertical videos. Drawing from the principles of the Diffusion of Innovations (DOI) theory, this paper examines how Patrol ng Pilipino integrated short-form vertical videos into its news content creation on TikTok. Through a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with seven participants (two news authorities and five reporters) and Patrol ng Pilipino's five most-viewed TikTok videos (April 2023 - March 2024), this research found that Patrol ng Pilipino recognizes short-form vertical videos' adaptability to evolving news consumption habits and audience preferences. This highlights a distinct contrast to traditional media and underscores the need for a journalistic presence on TikTok. Additionally, the ABS-CBN franchise loss and traditional media consumption decline prompted the organization to integrate short-form vertical videos in news content creation. With this, Patrol ng Pilipino implemented a measured approach to establish a journalistic presence, prioritizing journalistic integrity while leveraging TikTok's affordances for audience engagement. The study also revealed advantages and disadvantages associated with integrating new media formats into journalistic practice, suggesting the dual nature of TikTok. Lastly, the findings highlight the complex opportunities short-form vertical video platforms present for news production. News organizations must adapt to this changing landscape, where news consumption habits increasingly favor digital formats. However, this adaptation necessitates a careful balancing act: journalists must uphold core journalistic ethics while embracing the demands of new platforms.

    Magandang lalake: A relational study on the level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and the male K - drama viewers' concept of masculinity and gender performativity

    The research looks into the relationship between the male K-Drama viewers' level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and their concept of masculinity and gender performativity, which are both in terms of appearance and demeanor. The flower boy image or the kkonminam represents a soft version of masculinity, which holds the balance of having good looks and proper demeanor, and is often seen portrayed by male K-Drama protagonists. This study is mainly grounded on Gerbner and Gross' Cultivation Theory, which gives emphasis to the media's impact on viewers' attitude and perception based on their amount of exposure. Judith Butler's Gender Performativity then serves as a supporting theory as it gives emphasis to an individual's understanding of gender and how they conduct themselves, as well as the media's role in producing and transmitting ideals of masculinity. This study uses a quantitative research design and uses the correlational method. In the analysis and interpretation of data, Spearman's Rank Correlation is used to answer the study's research problem. The results show that all the variables have a very weak positive relationship. Amongst the variables mentioned, only the level of exposure and gender performativity in terms of demeanor has statistical significance. Overall, the study concludes K-Dramas may have played a role in the respondents' concept of masculinity and gender performativity although there may be external variables involved, and that the media is a gateway for the presentation and recognition of various forms of masculinities.

    Constraints and challenges on the use of emerging media among public high school teachers

    When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, the Department of Education implemented distance learning which is primarily module-based to accommodate those that do not have the resources. However, literature has shown that teachers still use emerging media in order to communicate with their students. This study aimed to find out the constraints and challenges experienced when using emerging media during distance learning. It was guided by the social presence theory which centers on the differences in the degree of social presence using telecommunications media and how these differences affect the communication in terms of constraints and challenges. Using quantitative research design and a descriptive survey method, public junior high school teachers were given survey questionnaires to report their experiences on the use of emerging media. The results of this study revealed that emerging media plays a significant role despite distance learning being modulebased. The challenges are caused by the digital divide that led to the lack of budget and technological infrastructure while constraints are more concerned with the intimacy and immediacy depending on where the type of emerging media falls on the social presence scale. Overall, the challenges and constraints encountered by the respondents in using emerging media affects the communication and by extension, the teaching and learning experience in distance learning.
