Item Growing up in culture of gambling: Explaining adolescent students' academic performance using the Theory of Planned BehaviorBurgos, Jaclyn Gay S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)Integrating lcek Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, this study seeks to explain the factors that influence the academic performance of adolescent students. In assessing the academic performance: questionnaires for attitudes towards behavior, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention were administered to adolescent students (n=88) in rural areas of Iloilo. A Pearson-product moment correlation was used to examine the correlation between the factors and academic performance. There were five participants who joined the focused group discussion and their answers provided an indepth connection of the variables. Results of the quantitative analysis stated that attitude towards behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control are individually correlated with intention but only attitude towards behavior is significantly correlated with academic performance. The results from this study can be used in schools and related government agencies in shaping students to have a more positive outlook with regards to academic performance.Item Resist the urge: Exploring the sources of abstinence self-efficacy of drug rehabilitation residents in Iloilo CityBoston, Marycon Anne C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)Integrating Albert Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory in substance abuse, this study seeks to identify the factors which contribute to abstinence self-efficacy of illicit drug users. In evaluating the sources of efficacy: mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and emotional arousal, drug rehabilitation residents (n =139) in Iloilo were administered scales and questionnaires. A Pearson product-moment correlation was utilized to examine the relationship of the sources and abstinence efficacy. Eight residents with the highest and lowest efficacy ratings were interviewed, and two focused group discussions were conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of the relationship of the variables. Results of the quantitative analysis indicated that the four hypothesized sources do not significantly correlate with drug abstinence efficacy. Cognitive appraisal through assessing the difficulty of abstinence, personal control, and the varying interpretation of experiences served as mediators in affecting efficacy. The physical cravings elicited by drug use prevents the residents to develop self-efficacy and be positively influenced by the external factors. Given that self-efficacy can predict future performance or outcome, the findings aid in enhancing rehabilitation interventions crucial for building efficacy and lifetime abstinence.Item What makes you stay: A test of the investment model on relationaship persistenceBatisla-ong, Zyra Lee A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)This study focused on the perception of relationship persistence of women through satisfaction, quality of alternatives, investment size, and commitment in light of infidelity. Survey and interview sessions were conducted among 85 women, aged 24-50 years old, from Iloilo City and Jordan, Guimaras. The results show that satisfaction, quality of alternatives, and commitment level positively affects the decision of women in persisting through with their relationships while investment size did not have any influence in women's perception of relationship persistence. Qualitative data was also used to support the results of the data analysisItem Economic cost of dengue fever treatment in Miagao, IloiloBanehit, Gracesel Faith D.; Napulan, Macie Carlyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)Dengue, the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral infection in the world, has caused many deaths in the Philippines. The municipality of Miagao, Iloilo Province, has recorded a high number of dengue cases in recent years. This study determined the economic cost of dengue fever treatment among affected households and patients with dengue in 2016 in Miagao. The study used a cross-sectional data collected from 169 interviews with the study participants for 201 dengue patients from 62 barangays in Miagao in February to April 2017. The study identified, measured, and valued the various costs related to dengue fever treatment. Results showed that the total economic cost for home-treated patients averaged at Pl2,522.08 for both the patient and the caregiver (household), with the following breakdown: P5,068.82 for monetary costs (direct medical and non-medical costs) and P7,453.26 as opportunity cost. For those who were admitted in the hospital, the total economic cost averaged at P22,213.31 with the following breakdown: P9,504.77 for monetary costs and P12,708.54 for opportunity cost. As expected, patients treated at home had lower costs both in monetary and nonmonetary aspects compared to those confined in the hospital. Although the majority of the study participants are knowledgeable about dengue, it is still necessary to increase their awareness of dengue prevention in order to prevent dengue treatment costs for the households. The local government must also strengthen the implementation of its existing dengue prevention policies and programs to mobilize cooperation and involvement of the people in dengue prevention.Item Willingness to pay for the barangay loudspeaker system as an early warning device among the residents of Sebaste, AntiqueAlonzo, Dumcel Kay J.; Bangero, Denevieve Y. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)The municipality of Sebaste in Antique Province is along the path of strong typhoons that can cause damage to lives and properties. The likely effects of these typhoons and other natural or man-made disasters can be mitigated by prompt information dissemination and early warning devices. Correct information and warnings that reach people at the right time can help them prepare for the impending disaster and avoid its likely effects. In Sebaste, there is no community-wide early warning system. This study focused on the value placed by the local residents of Sebaste, Antique for the establishment of an early warning device in the form of the Barangay Loud Speaker System (BLS) by estimating their willingness-to-pay (WTP) using Contingent Valuation Method. A total of 320 study participants representing their households, equally distributed in eight barangays of Sebaste, Antique were interviewed in January to March 2017 using a pilot-tested interview schedule. Seventy-five percent of the study participants were willing to pay for the BLS. The binary logit regression showed that bid price was the only factor that significantly (and negatively) affects WTP at 1% level of significance. The estimated monthly mean WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were P68.00 and P60.75, respectively. The monthly Social WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were Pl84,084.16 and Pl62,293.63, respectively. This study recommends that the local government of Sebaste should invest in the establishment of the BLS in each of 10 barangays of the municipality.Item Valuing the conservation of sea turtles in Brgy. Lawi, Jordan, Guimaras: An application of discrete choice experiment methodAborka, Rio Rina B.; Gange, Gay Margaret A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)To increase the population and remove the endangered status of sea turtles in Brgy. Lawi, Jordan, Guimaras, an effective and sustainable conservation program is a must. Using discrete choice experiment valuation method, this study determined the residents’ preferred conservation scheme for sea turtles in Brgy Lawi and estimated the conservation value for these creatures. A total enumeration of 204 residents was employed in the study. Improvements in listing status and the establishment of conservation facilities were the identified attributes of conserving sea turtles in the area. Results show that the establishment of conservation facilities with souvenir shop attribute level was mostly preferred. Income and age significantly affect the choice of the residents for improvements in a conservation scheme. Also, results show that the residents have positive attitudes towards conserving sea turtles and are willing to pay for it. The inclusion of an eco-tourism scheme, such as the addition of a souvenir shop that would open opportunities and generate income while still promoting the protection and conservation of sea turtles in the area is thus recommended. For further studies, the research recommended to include more attributes that could capture a wider scope of characteristic from the resource or good being valued.
