Item Abundance, composition and vertical distribution of calanoid copepods in Central Sulu seaBurgos, Lora A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-06)Calanoid copepods are dominant component of the copepod community, which in turn highlights their influence on the overall zooplankton assemblage of the water column. Studying their abundance and distribution, is important on understanding their role in the dynamics of commercially important organism like the fish. Calanoid samples in study, were part of the zooplankton samples taken during the Joint PhilEx oceanographic cruise on board RAZ Melville in December 2007 in the Central Sulu Sea from MOCNESS station 29. Calanoid abundance, composition and distribution were investigated. Fifteen (15) calanoid families were identified all throughout the water column (0 - 400 m). The calanoid assemblage was dominated by 27 % Eucalanidae, 12 % Rhincalanidae, Scolecitrichidae with 7 % and other families contributing to roughly 19 % of the total. The water column was divided into 2 distinct depth cluster based on species distributions; (1) layers above thermocline (0 - 150m) and (2) deeper layers (200 - 400m). Furthermore, upper layers were characterized by distinctive calanoid family assemblage which includes; Calanidae, Euchaetidae, Eucalanidae, Candaciidae, Rhincalanidae, and Temoridae. While deeper layers, calanoid families includes; Metridinidae, Scolecitrichidae, Rhincalanidae, and Euchaetidae. ANOSIM results showed significant differences between these depth clusters, with global R = 0.81 and p = 0.01. These appear to be highly related to the thermocline in both stations, where typically higher upper-layer primary productivity can support dense communities of zooplankton.Item Philippine Armed Forces different response towards different communists insurgents in the Island of Panay a comparative study on the 47th Infantry Battalion and 32nd Civil Relations UnitBrillantes, Jarrah S.; Tanate, Marianie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)Communist insurgency is one of the most long withstanding national security problem in the Philippines. There has been no ebb in the counter insurgency measures of the government since the Marcos regime to the present. However, the changes in the communist organization brought about institutional changes on the military’s part. In the current counterinsurgency operations by the armed forces units, there is now an emphasis on unarmed approaches such as civil-military operations, propaganda, psychological warfare and socio-civic activities, instead of just solely conducting armed approaches. Linkages, coordination and collaboration with the local government units in promoting development became significant elements in counterinsurgency operations. This paper examines the different kinds of approaches undertaken by the 47th Infantry Battalion at Calinog, Iloilo and the Civil Relation Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (CRSAFP) in Camp Delgado, Iloilo City toward communist insurgents. The 47th IB and the 32nd CRU are currently conducting a triad approach in the counterinsurgency operations. This triad approach includes combat operations, intelligence and socio-civic operations. In delegating the command from commanding officer to the operating units, the chain of command is well observed and followed. In addressing the insurgency problem, the AFP units have high regards toward local government authorities. Education, training and years in service as well as coordination and cooperation with local civil counterparts affect their competence in operations undertaken.Item A quantitative and qualitative analyses of phytoplankton in Lamentao, Barotac Nuevo, IloiloBoglosa, Jescel B. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-03)The study was conducted to identify the different genera of phytoplankton in Lamentao, Barotac Nuevo, to determine the distribution and composition of phytoplankton both near shore and offshore and to determine the physico-chemical characteristics in both sampling sites. The samples were obtained near shore (10m) and offshore (15m) for 10 minutes. Towing was done at 12 noon for 200 m. Sampling was done once a month for three consecutive months starting October to December. Each sample was allowed to stand for at least 24 hours. Then these were decanted to have a concentrated sample. Then 1ml sample was introduced in a sedge wick counting chamber for identification and counting under the microscope. The study gave the following findings: There are 32 genera identified in the surface water of Lamentao. Offshore has a higher abundance than the near shore. There are some genera that significantly differ in 2 sampling area shown by the t-test. Density offshore were generally significantly higher than density nearshore. Relative abundance, Leucosolenia sp. and Rhizosolenia sp. have the higher one. There is a higher diversity in off shore than in near shore. Most of the genera is present in both sites and month as shown by the index of similarity.Item A study on the preference of the UPV Social Science student between violence and non-violence as a progress on change in the Philippine societyBerlin, Sharon Joy (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1983-04)The study was conducted among 100 students of the Division of Social Sciences, University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Iloilo City. It attempted to answer the following questions: 1. Violence and Non-violence: which would the students prefer in changing society? 2. Is their preference related to some observable factors like sex, religiousity and family income? 3. What is the attitude of students towards the present government? The respondents were almost unanimous (94%) in their belief that Philippine society needs social changes. Moreover, they perceived the monopoly of power by the few’ as the primary problem of the nation. In the question of political preferences between the different methods of social transformation a considerable number (59%) preferred the use of both violent and nonviolent conduct in effecting changes. When factors like sex, religiousity and family income, were subjected to Chi —Square test, the result is as follows: 1. Female students were not politically less violent than their male counterparts. 2. The more religious the student the less likely he is violent. 3.High family income do not necessarily produce a preference on non-violent method. As to the third question, "What is the attitude of students towards the present Government?", there was a high (91%) percentage that the present government works for the service of the few. A moderate number (52%) believed that the government can not solve the country’s problem, but in terms of the national leadership, a considerable number (61%) categorized it as fairly responsive.Item Exposure to anti-prostitution campaign and the level of awareness and knowledge of Rizal Estanzuela Residents and sex workers in Iloilo City towards task force on moral and values formation's anti-prostitution campaignBayonita, Erlyn I.; Iniego, Christine Joy V.; Tetosera, Jimma Luz P. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)This study aims to determine the exposure to anti-prostitution campaign and the level of awareness and knowledge of the residents of Rizal Estanzuela and the sex workers in Iloilo City towards Task Force on Moral and Values Formation's anti-prostitution campaign. It also intends to assess the needs of the existing campaign. It follows two sampling procedures: simple random sampling and purposive sampling procedure. The results will then be the basis for the production of the campaign materials. The respondents of this study will consist of both sex workers and residents of Rizal Estanzuela, Iloilo City. Based on the results of the study, the researchers found out that the residents of Rizal Estanzuela have average level of awareness and average level of knowledge towards the campaign. Sex workers in Iloilo City have high level of awareness but have average level of knowledge regarding the said campaign.Item Continuity and change: A generational comparison of the social representations of Martial Law in the Philippines (1972-1986)Bandoy, Laarni Lee V.; Mecenas, Eunice Marinelle Pamela C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)A nation’s understanding of past events has implications on its national identity since it provides a point of commonality and continuation especially for nationally significant events. For the Philippines, this would be the Martial Law Period (1972-1986). Social psychological inquiries into the representation of military7 dictatorship were explored through the construct of collective memories, and previous studies on the representations of history have found that they arc aligned with Mannheim’s theory of generational effects. The current study intended to explore the generational differences in the social representations of Martial Law in the Philippines using a structural approach to Moscovici’s Social Representation Theory. Employing a mixed-method approach, this study made use of the Hierarchical Evocation Model to analyze the data collected. The findings of this study show that there is both continuity and change in the social representations of the two generational cohorts who experienced and did not experience living through the Martial Law Period. The social representations of both cohorts were grounded on concepts like politics, power, and social values such as human rights and freedom. One difference was how their social representations of the Martial Law Period were structured since the younger cohort lacked a central core, indicating a gradual change of social representations of the period over time. The way the period was objectified also differed, as the older cohort mentioned a larger selection of socio-economic changes during the period, and the younger cohort mentioned concepts of democracy and the EDSA Revolution. This study supports the generational effects conceptualized by Mannheim (1952), reflects the convergence of social representations of two generations through time as observed by Montiel (2010), and may be useful in identifying the changes in the social representations of the Martial Law Period because of historical distortion.Item Court-annexed mediation: Fair and speedy administration of justice in the PhilippinesBaes, Marty V. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)The Philippine Judicial System experiences a problem characterized by clogged court dockets. Courts are having a hard time in resolving the cases brought before them. Court-annexed mediation (CAM) was adopted to supplement the traditional due process (DPL) method of resolving cases. To understand how CAM speeds up the administration of justice, the CAM and DPL method was compared to determine the differences in the length of time and the amount of resources spent for case resolution. Interviews, archival research, and participant observations were conducted. The results revealed that CAM resolve cases in a short period of time involving lesser amount of resources spent compared to the DPL method. Though CAM proves to be a speedy and expedient method of case resolution, it is not yet able to solve the problem of clogged court dockets for the reason that it is still a new method of resolving cases.Item Signification of Filipino culture in the film RPG MetanoiaAsuncion, April Angeli B.; Zante, Sheena Angelique D.; Piñano, Von Janatius (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)This study identifies and describes the different significations of Filipino Culture in the 3D animated film RPG Metanoia. It is supported by Semiotics’ basic claim that media texts are made up of signs, which are composed of two elements: the signifier and the signified. The signifier is the physical representation of a sign that is being perceived by the senses, while the signified are the meanings that are being associated with the sign. The signifiers in this study are the different physical representations of the different Components of Culture according to Panopio et al. (1978), namely, Norms, Ideas and Material Culture. Data were gathered through observation and were further analyzed using content analysis. An interview with the creators of the film was also conducted. Results show that the different significations of Filipino Culture in the film are Norms like Barkada System and Kwentuhan, Ideas which include the value of Pagkamasayahin and Belief in the Supernatural, and Material Culture which is signified by Filipino Clothing.
