Cabardo, Liberty Rose A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-04)
The purpose of this study was to determine the job performance and job satisfaction of CAS-UPV teachers, and to examine the relationship between performance and satisfaction. Specifically, three elements were included in this study: (1) the self-evaluation of job performance among CAS-UPV teachers by division, educational attainment and years of teaching experience; (2) the self-reported job satisfaction among CAS- UPV teachers; and (3) the relationship between job performance and job satisfaction. A non-experimental correlation research design was used in this study. The population of the study consisted of all College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) teachers of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV), Miagao campus, Iloilo. Out of the 107 possible respondents, 74 respondents returned their questionnaire which had three parts: the PERSONAL INVENTORY PROFILE, the SELFEVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE ON JOB PERFORMANCE, and the JOB SATISFACTION SCALE. Using the one-way ANOVA, it was found that: (1) there was no significant difference in the self-evaluation of job performance when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to division and educational attainment; (2) there was no significant difference in job satisfaction when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to their respective division; (3) there was a significant difference in the self-evaluation of job performance when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to years of teaching experience; (4) there was a significant difference on job satisfaction when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to educational attainment and years of teaching experience; and (5) there was a significant relationship between job performance and job satisfaction.

The pharmacological screening of Moringa oleifera Lam.
Burgos, Karen J. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-07)
Moringa oleifera, Lam, or malunggay, belongs to Family Moringaceae. The medicinal value of this plant has long been recognized in folk medicine. Not all the claims, however, are proven scientifically. This study aimed to (1) test the crude extracts from the seeds and leaves of M. oleifera for pharmacological properties and (2) to compare its efficacy with the drugs commonly used to alleviate particular ailment. Phytochemical assay for alkaloid using Culvenor-Fitzgerald method was done to test the presence of alkaloids. The dried seeds and young leaves were extracted with methanol and concentrated under reduced pressure at 45°C. The resulting extracts were partitioned and used for the different assays: Brine shrimp assay for cytotoxicity, Acetic acid-induced writhing assay for analgesic activity, Charcoal tracing assay for antispasmodic activity and paper disc diffusion method for antimicrobial activity. Result showed that only the seeds have alkaloids. Toxicity test revealed that the seeds are practically non-toxic but the leaves were toxic with an LC50 of 550 μg/mL after 24 hours of exposure. Of the two extracts, only the leaves exhibited analgesic activity although not as effective as Mefenamic Acid in reducing pain. The leaf extract, was also found active against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The seed extract was active only against B. subtilis. Both extracts, however, are not as effective as the antibiotic drug, Amoxicillin. Results also showed that both extracts do not have antispasmodic activity. The study confirmed the antimicrobial and analgesic activities for the use of the leaves of this plant in folk medicine.

TV exposure and study habits of UPV high school students
Brasileño, Hazel Alice P. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1987-03)
This study was conducted to find out the level of television exposure of high school students, to know their study habits, and to find out the relationship between TV exposure and the study habits of UPV high school students. A study was conducted among VP Visayas High School students, where a total of 137 respondents from first, second, third, and fourth year levels provided the major data of the study. A three-page questionnaire was the instrument used in gathering data. It included: respondent’s level of exposure to TV and the student’s study habits. The least part related TV exposure with study habits. Findings revealed that there is 99% television viewer- ship which means that there is a high level of TV exposure among respondents. Number of hours of viewing ranges from 30 minutes to a maximum of six hours. Most of the programs watched were foreign canned shows and were entertainment in nature. Preferred viewing schedule of most students is 7-9 p.m. Findings also showed that most (54%) of the parents imposed restrictions on their children’s viewing, particularly on the number of hours students watched TV. On the other hand, ninety-six percent (96%) of the students studied their lessons. For those who studied majority do 30 everyday for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of three hours. Students preferred to study between 8-10 p.m. Students study mainly to attain high grades. In relating TV exposure and study habits results showed that TV viewing consumes most of the free time of students and that time slotted for study is utilized for viewing the medium. However, TV viewing is also helpful to the students in that it gives them information and ideas which they applied to their lessons. The chi-square test for independence was used to find out if there is a relationship between the two variables TV exposure and study habits. Results showed that there is a relationship between TV exposure and study habits, that is, the more exposed the students are to TV, the greater is the probability that the number of time spent for studying will be lessened.

Self-fulfilling prophecy and self-efficacy: Their effects on performance
Beter, Cipriano; Bocala, Mary Ilyich (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-03)
Individuals’ performances in academics and in any task-related jobs are sometimes influenced by others’ or one’s own expectations. In addition, a person’s views of his competence and capability could similarly affect its achievement. These were the highlights of the study wherein the researchers sought to investigate the effect of self- efficacy on performance, self-fulfilling prophecy on performance, and the interaction effect of both on performance. Participants of this study consisted of eighty (80) Third Year High school students from two sections of Capiz National High School. A 2 (high and low levels of self-efficacy) x 2 (positive and negative self-fulfilling prophecy) between-subject factorial design was used in this study. The randomly selected participants were asked to answer the General Perceived Self-efficacy Scale. Arbitrarily, their scores were used as a basis for assigning them to either high or low self-efficacy group. There were two phases in the study. In the first phase, the predetermined high efficacious participants viewed a film depicting the successful performance of the student in solving a chemistry problem. Low efficacious participants on the other hand separately viewed a film which depicted the unsuccessful performance of the student. Verbal persuasion was given by the lecturer after each film was shown. In the second phase of the experiment, high efficacious participants were subdivided into two groups. One group was induced with a positive expectation by the confederate and the other group was induced with a negative one. The same procedure was administered with the low efficacious participants. The F-score for the effect of self-efficacy on performance was F(l,80) =0.597, p<05, indicating that the performance scores of students whether they belong in the high or low self-efficacy group had no significant difference. Results further showed that the effect of self-fulfilling prophecy was significant F(l,80)=19.947, p<.05, suggesting that the performance scores of participants regardless what level of self-efficacy group they were assigned had a significant difference. This result suggests that teacher’s expectation (positive or negative) strongly affect students’ performance. On the other hand, findings on the interaction effect of self-efficacy and self-fulfilling prophecy received no strong support.

A comparative study of the microorganisms found in the vaginal flora of pill and non pill user by Pap smear
Bayate, Aimee Sarena L. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1994-03)
This study was conducted to identify and classify the organisms that are present in pill users and non-pill users. It will determine if taking of pills cause changes in the microflora of pill (combined) users and will describe the profile of both pill and non-pill users. The study use 200 prepared smears of the vagina, divided equally to both pill and non-pill users. The slides were collected at Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial Hospital, Lambunao, Iloilo by the family planning physician with the help of the medical technologist. The profile of the patients were also gathered to provide more information about the subjects. The organisms were identified according to their basic morphological characteristic. The results indicate that bacilli which is the normal inhabitant of the vagina is present in 200 samples. Cocci is present in both groups but occure more in women who are pill users. In the parasite group, Trichomonas vaginalis is present in women who are pill user and Candida is present in both groups but occur more in women who are pill users. The test for the estimation of the difference between two proportions reveal that the z values obtained from the experiment falls between the critical region which has a value of 2.58. Such a value indicate that the prevalence of parasites and bacteria are equal among pill and non-pill users.

Marketing of milkfish fry in Pandan, Antique
Bayaras, Dinah A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1995-03)
This study describes and analyses the marketing, channels, functions/practices, costs, margins, and shares received by each marketing channel, net price of milk-fish fry received by fry catchers, and the problems encountered in the marketing of milkfish fry in Pandan, Antique. Using a separate interview schedule for each kind of respondent, 40 fry catchers are asked about their latest catch on a per-day basis, and the ten middlemen were interviewed about their last transaction/s. Results showed that from the fry catchers, the 4,218 milkfish fry are sold to three types of middlemen: the commissionman, wholesaler and facilitative organization. Fifty-nine percent of the milkfish fry go to the facilitative organisation, twenty-three percent to the commissionman, and eighteen percent to the wholesaler. From the three types of middlemen, only 86 7, of what they’ve purchased were sold of the 3,610 milkfish fry sold, 55% of it go to the wholesaler/retailer. Others go outside of the municipality. All of the wholesaler/retailer purchases go outside of the municipality. The pre-sale practices performed by the fry catchers include gathering, counting, sorting, storing, and transporting, while the middlemen perform counting, sorting, storing, packaging, and transporting. In performing the five pre-sale practices by the fry catchers, the cost of P16.95 is incurred. These are all noncash costs. The cost of P4.0012 for the depreciation cost of marketing investment items and the mortality cost of P12.95 - This includes the allowance for mortality given to the buyer as well as the actual deaths of milkfish fry - are the composition of the marketing costs. The net. The price of milkfish fry is P0.24/piece. But 23% of the opportunity cost of labor was forgone. The pre-sale practices performed by each type of middleman involved in the marketing of milkfish fry accumulated a distinct cost for each type. For the commissionman, he has a total of P87,3367 marketing cost. The wholesaler incurred — 117.996, the facilitative organization has P570.4867, and the wholesaler/retailer has Pl,365.7987. The middleman who has the highest net return in terms of percentage of average revenue is the commissionman (70.62%), followed by the wholesaler (69.76%), then the facilitative organization (57.89%), and the smallest is received by the wholesaler/retailer (37.54). followed by the facilitative middleman (P0.21), and then the In terms of gross margin received by each type of middleman, the highest shareholder is the wholesaler /retailer (P0.28), then the wholesaler (PC, 23), and the commissionman (P0.06). The problems of poor transportation facilities, insufficient capital, communications in pricing, excessive mortality rates, and the absence of a buyer are the bottlenecks in the marketing system. These problems produce a bad outcome for the middlemen by increasing their losses.

Decision making in the practice of birth control in a rural community
Barrios, Ritchie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)
This is a study on the decision-making pattern of couples in the use of birth control in a rural community. The study sought to determine: 1. Who the decision-maker is in the couple structure: 2. how the decision to practice was reached by them and 3. what are the basis for the choice of a particular birth control method. Based on the findings it was concluded that for the couples in Brgy. Tuburan, Pototan, Iloilo it was both the husband and the wife who decided that they will practice birth control. This is contrary to the popular notion that it is the husband who decides. It was also found out that the midwife who was at the same time the family planning implementor, played a major role in the decision to practice birth control. Having reached the decision to practice birth control, certain considerations like convenience, effectiveness, no side effects, etc. were taken by the couples in the selection of the method to adopt. It was however found out that the final choice of the method to be used was made by the family planning implementor. It is interesting to note, however, that in the barangay only forty-one couples out of the one hundred seventy have or are practicing birth control. This is attributed to the fact that the family planning implementors failed to get the message across to a larger audience. The mothers' class which was used as a strategy to attract couples to take interest in family planning failed to reach large segment of the population.

Married women's participation in household decision-making
Bantigue, Aleli (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)
This study was undertaken to identify the areas of household decision-making where married women of nuclear families participate. The variables involved in this study were 'educational attainment of women, ''their income, and the different areas of household decision-making. The primary instrument used in this study was an interview schedule to gather necessary data. The barangay of Mat-y, Miag-ao, Iloilo, was chosen as the research site. The respondents of the study are 59 married women of nuclear families as 50% sample. A random sampling method was employed. The chi-square test was utilised primarily in data analysis to determine the presence ofa relationship between variables. More so, simple frequency and percentage counts were employed to make the presentation of results comprehensible. With the use of frequency and percentages, it was found out that married women are involved in every area of decision-making in the household, namely financial-economic and socio-moral concerns. in financial-economic areas, women are more involved most particularly inhousehold budgeting of everyday expenses. In sociomoral concerns, they are most involved specifically in the care of children. Likewise, the results of the chi-square test showed that no relationship is evident between educational attainment and women’s involvement in the decision—making process in both financial-economic and socio-moral related areas, Furthermore, as to income as the other variable, two decision-areas were found to be affected by income. These were under the financial-economic related aspects of decision- mooting specifically in borrowing of money and paying of loans or credits, moreover, the other decision areas tested showed no relationship between income and women’s participation in the decision-making process.
