Effect of soil amendments on damping-off disease of tomato
Balofiños, Junnel B. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-04)
Different soil amendments obtained commercially were tested for their ability to suppress damping-off disease of tomato. Compost, animal manure, inorganic fertilizer, and green manure were applied to autoclaved soil prior to addition of a pathogenic inoculum. The biological control of the damping-off disease was evaluated by monitoring disease incidence in every plot of 50 seedlings for 25 days. Compost and animal manure significantly reduced disease incidence while green manure and inorganic fertilizer did not yield significant results as compared to the nonamended control soil. Percent emergence, dry matter content, and height were not at all affected by the different treatments.

Structural transformation of the labor force and changes in employment conditions: The case of Aklan
Baco, Hazel Mae B.; Cabello, Mary Ann S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-03)
This paper attempts to identify trends in employment conditions and structural changes in the labor force in the province of Aklan. The trends in employment conditions and status of the labor force in Aklan is measured by five major data sets gathered from the National Statistics Office (NSO) and National Statistics Coordinating Board (NSCB). These are unemployment, underemployment and employment by economic sector, by class of workers, by major occupation group, and by major industry group. The results of this study show that Aklan remains largely agricultural and employment conditions were stagnant, but there were signs pointing to the gradual shift of economic activities from agriculture toward manufacturing and services Empirical results are interpreted using theories of structural change. The limitations of the empirical findings owing to problems in the data set as well as the policy implications of the findings are discussed.

Court-annexed mediation: Fair and speedy administration of justice in the Philippines
Baes, Marty V. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)
The Philippine Judicial System experiences a problem characterized by clogged court dockets. Courts are having a hard time in resolving the cases brought before them. Court-annexed mediation (CAM) was adopted to supplement the traditional due process (DPL) method of resolving cases. To understand how CAM speeds up the administration of justice, the CAM and DPL method was compared to determine the differences in the length of time and the amount of resources spent for case resolution. Interviews, archival research, and participant observations were conducted. The results revealed that CAM resolve cases in a short period of time involving lesser amount of resources spent compared to the DPL method. Though CAM proves to be a speedy and expedient method of case resolution, it is not yet able to solve the problem of clogged court dockets for the reason that it is still a new method of resolving cases.

Asuncion, April Angeli B.; Zante, Sheena Angelique D.; Piñano, Von Janatius (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)
This study identifies and describes the different significations of Filipino Culture in the 3D animated film RPG Metanoia. It is supported by Semiotics’ basic claim that media texts are made up of signs, which are composed of two elements: the signifier and the signified. The signifier is the physical representation of a sign that is being perceived by the senses, while the signified are the meanings that are being associated with the sign. The signifiers in this study are the different physical representations of the different Components of Culture according to Panopio et al. (1978), namely, Norms, Ideas and Material Culture. Data were gathered through observation and were further analyzed using content analysis. An interview with the creators of the film was also conducted. Results show that the different significations of Filipino Culture in the film are Norms like Barkada System and Kwentuhan, Ideas which include the value of Pagkamasayahin and Belief in the Supernatural, and Material Culture which is signified by Filipino Clothing.

Alvizo, Marjorie V.; Laura, Cecille R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)
Generally, this study aimed to evaluate or assess the profitability of van operation in Miag-ao, Iloilo. It specifically dealt with the cost and return structures of the said business. The study was conducted in the municipality of Miag-ao, which is one of the towns in the province of Iloilo. There were 11 respondents who are all van operators and at the same time members of the Miag-ao Association of Van Owners and Drivers, Inc. (MAVAD). Two of them owned or operate two vans, so in the data presented there were 13 vans. A one-shot survey using recall method was used as a source of data. An interview schedule was also utilized in gathering the needed data for the study. In analyzing the data, frequency distribution, percentage, ranking and weighted mean were employed. Likewise, cost and return analysis was used to determine the profitability of the van operation. Results of the study showed that almost half of the respondents have an age range of 30-40 years. Majority (73%) of them were males and already married. All van operators earned college degrees and have well-paying jobs. Roman Catholic was the dominant religion and most of them have or belong to medium family size. The cost and return analysis of the study showed that the average initial investment in the van operation was P 238,000. The total annual operating cost was P 434,366. Forty nine percent of it was paid for the salaries and allowances of the laborers. The annual gross revenue was P 505,210 with a net income (or pure economic profit) of P 70,844. Rate of return on investment was 30% and it will take 3.4 years for the business to recover its initial capital outlay. Based on the results presented, with positive net profit and gross revenue it is profitable to engage in this business venture.

Willingness to pay for the barangay loudspeaker system as an early warning device among the residents of Sebaste, Antique
Alonzo, Dumcel Kay J.; Bangero, Denevieve Y. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
The municipality of Sebaste in Antique Province is along the path of strong typhoons that can cause damage to lives and properties. The likely effects of these typhoons and other natural or man-made disasters can be mitigated by prompt information dissemination and early warning devices. Correct information and warnings that reach people at the right time can help them prepare for the impending disaster and avoid its likely effects. In Sebaste, there is no community-wide early warning system. This study focused on the value placed by the local residents of Sebaste, Antique for the establishment of an early warning device in the form of the Barangay Loud Speaker System (BLS) by estimating their willingness-to-pay (WTP) using Contingent Valuation Method. A total of 320 study participants representing their households, equally distributed in eight barangays of Sebaste, Antique were interviewed in January to March 2017 using a pilot-tested interview schedule. Seventy-five percent of the study participants were willing to pay for the BLS. The binary logit regression showed that bid price was the only factor that significantly (and negatively) affects WTP at 1% level of significance. The estimated monthly mean WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were P68.00 and P60.75, respectively. The monthly Social WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were Pl84,084.16 and Pl62,293.63, respectively. This study recommends that the local government of Sebaste should invest in the establishment of the BLS in each of 10 barangays of the municipality.

Values beyond entertainment: Audience reception on satirical film “Ded na si Lolo”
Albesa, Adrianne; Dusaban, Edwin, Jr.; Paguntalan, Angela (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)
This study looks into whether or not film enthusiasts recognize socio-cultural verisimilitude in the film Ded na si Lolo. The respondents of this study are film enthusiasts from the University of the Philippines Visayas who are active filmmakers and participate film festivals in Western Visayas. Data collection is done in two sessions of focus group discussion with a total of 12 participants. The film Ded na si Lolo is shown to the participants after which they are asked open-ended questions on their perception. Responses are coded and interpreted through thematic analysis. An observation in this research is that the encoded message in the film is easily decoded if the viewers are familiar with the film elements (i.e. characters, setting, plot., etc.) and also with real life issues and scenarios. However, being too familiar with film elements puts the viewer at risk of misinterpreting the message content or assigning meanings that were not intended by the filmmaker. All are able to recognize the socio-cultural verisimilitude of the film Ded na si Lolo and most of the audience, still, are able to decode the encoded message of the filmmaker. The results imply that Ded na si Lolo, being satirical in nature, has not been very successfull in delivering its message to criticize the funeral customs and beliefs of the Philippine culture. The study concludes that if the satirical purpose of the film is not fully grasped by film enthusiasts who have the ability to analyze and decode messages from the film, this might be even more challenging for the general population.

Self-disclosure and stages of relationship formation in social networking sites: The case of Facebook
Arista, Mark Joshua O.; Ricopuerto, Maicah B. (Division of Humanities , College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)
This study contributes to literature on computer-mediated communication, particularly online relationship formation. It serves as a source of information for people to know what kind of information they should disclose online, specifically on Facebook, and helps users to analyze and identify differences between their online and offline relationships. This study analyzed how online relationships are formed in Facebook in terms of self-disclosure and how users form relationships through their Facebook accounts. A total of 420 respondents answered the survey questionnaires designed to analyze online self-disclosure among Facebook users and the stages of relational development in Facebook. Results showed that respondents were reluctant to disclose information regarding personal matters, beliefs or religious convictions, relationships, and sex; and were willing to disclose information regarding their interests. Furthermore, it was found that the probability of online relationships like romantic relationships to develop is relatively small while relationships like being friends or acquaintances have the bigger chance to build up. It was also found that if a relationship was developed online, it undergoes certain stages which are similar to the stages of face-to-face relationships. This study concludes that Facebook users do not consider the site as a proper or right medium/channel for self-disclosure, especially of highly private and personal matters, which is the ground for relationships to develop. Meaning, the development of online romantic relationships is not always possible. Basically, interpersonal relationships in Facebook are confined to acquaintanceship which is grounded on common interests. Future researches could also explore other aspects of online relationships like anonymity or look at the role of Facebook in maintaining already existing relationships. An unstructured interview which can gather valuable insights from the respondents is also recommended. Other researchers can also test the quality and longevity of relationships which are initiated in Facebook and brought face-to-face.

Toyang Ermitanya and the consumption of Iloilo City proper-based listeners vis-a-vis Miagao-based listeners
Abenes, Darren Al B.; Concepcion, Ma. Emilee Anne R.; Paren, Ryan M. (Division of Social Sciences , College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-10)
This study sought to study the following: 1) the consumption of listeners from the two groups of respondents from the urban community which is Iloilo City Proper vis a vis the rural community of Miagao, and 2) the way the listeners perceive such radio drama whether as something which convey issues in the society or as something which is purely entertaining. The researchers used two major steps in data gathering: survey and indepth interviews. One hundred respondents who were listeners of such drama participated, half of which came from both groups of respondents who were Iloilo City Proper-based and Miagao-based. The survey revealed that Iloilo City Proper-based respondents have a higher frequency of exposure to such drama compared Miagao-based respondents. It was also revealed that majority of the respondents from each group of respondents perceived Toyang Ermitanya as entertaining however, majority also claimed that they were also learning lessons and insights from it. Moreover, with the results and data collected and analyzed, the research itself revealed three prevailing forms in the consumption of such radio drama by both groups of listeners. First, Toyang Ermitanya as a medium for emotional release. Second, as a form of enjoyment. And third, Toyang Ermitanya as a medium where one could obtain pieces of information and advice from listening to it.
