Negrosanon, indi tikalon: The severed ties between Ilonggo and Negrense identity and the creation of Negrense "Tikalon" stereotype
Caberte, Kizhi G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)
The Negrense "tikalon" stereotype has acquired popularity in recent years as a result of its virality on numerous social media platforms. The amusing banter between Ilonggos and Negrenses culminated in the return of the long-established "tikalon" stereotype. This piqued the researchers' curiosity in investigating the phenomenon and studying its emergence. This study investigates the "tikalon" stereotype of Negrense identity and how it can be explained using economic scarcity theory. The researchers argues that the Ilonggo people's creation of negative stereotypes about their Negrense neighbors, such as "tikalon" and "hambog" (proud), was a result of their insecurity over their own economic shortcomings in comparison to Negros Occidental’s economic affluence during the 1930s. When the sugar industry prospered in Negros due to a new generation of entrepreneurs who established big plantations at the time, it created a significant gap between Negros Occidental and Iloilo. This study utilizes narrative by Ilonggos in addition to a literary analysis of the works of Ramon Muzones through Ma. Cecilia Locsin-Nava. This paper asserts that Ilonggos who experienced economic deprivation channeled their anxiety and frustrations by creating the stereotypes about Bacolodnon in order to maintain and uphold the preexisting status quo.

Print media exposure and the attitude of graduating mass and broadcast communication students toward classified ads
Cabanilla, Richelle T. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1988-02)
Hypothetically, frequency of exposure to an object or idea affects one’s attitude toward it. Such premise was used for this particular study. An attempt is made to determine if any relationship exists between exposure to print media, specifically to newspapers, and attitude toward the classified ads. Totalling 67 in all, graduating Mass and Broadcast Communication students of School Year 1986-87 in Iloilo City, were made as respondents. A set of questionnaires were handed out to them and the line of inquiry covered the areas from frequency of newspaper reading to behavioral inclinations or action tendencies toward the classified ads. Aside from trying to determine the frequency of exposure and what the respondents think of the ads, the questionnaire was also designed to deal with the three components of attitude: the cognitive, affective and the behavioral. One concept about the nature of attitude is taken from the Latent Process Viewpoint which incidentally is used as a guide in this study. The viewpoint surmises that attitude is a hidden mental or neural process which takes place in the individual. As such, one limitation in the study of attitude is that it is not directly observable. Inferences about one’s attitude can only be based from the study of overt behavioral responses. Theoretically, exposure is considered as the independent variable and attitude as the dependent variable. In actuality however, attitude is more of an intervening variable because the study focuses on the stimulus-response set-up with "attitude" seen as a possible explanation for the causation of response or responses to the stimulus. Based on the data gathered, the respondents are in general, favorably disposed toward the classified ads. The positive attitude is connected somehow with the respondents' belief that the classified section is primarily informative and entertaining at the same time. To prove or disprove the hypothesis, a contingency table was constructed for the computation of the chi-square. The table included the respondents’ frequency of newspaperreading and whether they like or dislike the ads. The computation of the chi-square nullifies the hypothesis that students who like and dislike the classified ads differ in their frequency of reading the newspapers. Similarly, based on the data gathered, a couple of hypotheses were formulated. One, students who have a favorable and unfavorable descriptions of the classified ads differ in belief on the ads’ capacity to provide for their purposes or motives in reading them. Two, students who have and don’t have any action tendencies toward the classified ads differ in their belief on possible gains which can be derived from them. The study of attitude per se is complex thus further researches are recommended.

Cabardo, Liberty Rose A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-04)
The purpose of this study was to determine the job performance and job satisfaction of CAS-UPV teachers, and to examine the relationship between performance and satisfaction. Specifically, three elements were included in this study: (1) the self-evaluation of job performance among CAS-UPV teachers by division, educational attainment and years of teaching experience; (2) the self-reported job satisfaction among CAS- UPV teachers; and (3) the relationship between job performance and job satisfaction. A non-experimental correlation research design was used in this study. The population of the study consisted of all College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) teachers of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV), Miagao campus, Iloilo. Out of the 107 possible respondents, 74 respondents returned their questionnaire which had three parts: the PERSONAL INVENTORY PROFILE, the SELFEVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE ON JOB PERFORMANCE, and the JOB SATISFACTION SCALE. Using the one-way ANOVA, it was found that: (1) there was no significant difference in the self-evaluation of job performance when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to division and educational attainment; (2) there was no significant difference in job satisfaction when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to their respective division; (3) there was a significant difference in the self-evaluation of job performance when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to years of teaching experience; (4) there was a significant difference on job satisfaction when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to educational attainment and years of teaching experience; and (5) there was a significant relationship between job performance and job satisfaction.

Growing up in culture of gambling: Explaining adolescent students' academic performance using the Theory of Planned Behavior
Burgos, Jaclyn Gay S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
Integrating lcek Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, this study seeks to explain the factors that influence the academic performance of adolescent students. In assessing the academic performance: questionnaires for attitudes towards behavior, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention were administered to adolescent students (n=88) in rural areas of Iloilo. A Pearson-product moment correlation was used to examine the correlation between the factors and academic performance. There were five participants who joined the focused group discussion and their answers provided an indepth connection of the variables. Results of the quantitative analysis stated that attitude towards behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control are individually correlated with intention but only attitude towards behavior is significantly correlated with academic performance. The results from this study can be used in schools and related government agencies in shaping students to have a more positive outlook with regards to academic performance.

Buenaflor, Daphne Claire; Haro, Samantha Gabrielle; Rojas, Jerlyn Joy (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-05)
Fan fiction has become quite the internet trend especially among female teens that the researchers sought to find out why readers read fan fiction and what underlying needs of the readers are gratified by fan fiction. Fan fiction is all about fictional stories written by fans on real celebrities that are either published or posted online. The study is based on Katz and Blumler’s Uses and Gratifications theory, which explains the uses and functions of the media for individuals, be it of groups, and society in general. It is a survey done on to 350 female students at the Iloilo National High School (INHS) using descriptive statistics as its method of analysis. Findings reveal that Wattpad is the most used platform in accessing fan fiction and the most read stories are under Romance. The results also show the primary use for the respondents as to why they read fan fiction is stimulation or to develop their creativity and spark their imagination. Moreover, the gratifications acquired by the readers, which are cognitive or acquiring knowledge, information, and comprehensions are parallel to why they read fan fiction in the first place. The lowest rated use is socialization and the lowest rated gratification is social integrative which are also parallel to each other Reading fan fiction for the respondents, allows them to be more motivated and to be more inventive. Although, fan fiction does not necessarily help in improving the social lives of the readers.

Subalternity in the Cebuano poems of Michael Obenieta: A postcolonial approach to the study of the selected Cebuano poems of Michael Obenieta
Buac, Abigail C. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-04)
This study examines eleven Cebuano poems of Michael "Myke" Obenieta and reviews cultural-historical studies related to the concept of subalternity as an aspect of postcolonialism. The researcher examines the prevalent literary elements in each poem; discusses the subalterns. discourses in them; and ascertain the author's role in the Cebuano literary culture. The prevalent literary element in Myke's poems is imagery. Other literary elements present are similes, metaphors, personifications, and hyperboles which contribute to the effectiveness of imagery. The style of writing employed by the author is adopted from the Western way of writing — the free verse - although he uses the formal Cebuano language in presenting images of Cebuanos and the aspects of their everyday life. These eleven Cebuano poems contain symbols and images of subjugation, absorption, domination, and subordination which characterizes the Cebuanos as subalterns. The author is native of Cebu but he left the country to live in Kansas City for reasons not only for greener pastures but for a place where he could establish himself as a poet in the light of where he came from. Myke, as he explores the Cebuano culture and reflect them in these eleven poems, contribute to the development of the Cebuano literature; a new trend in the study of Cebuano literary culture.

Briones, John Nathaniel B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03-17)
This paper is a study on RPG Metanoia, a Filipino computer generated film released in December 2010. The film features a hero and his adventures in real life and as a player of the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Metanoia. This thesis will be studying RPG Metanoia for the sake of adding academic knowledge regarding computer games themed media and pop culture in literature. Using analysis by Vladimir Propp RPG Metanoia will be subject to formalist structuralism in order to analyze the literary structure of the film. A study by Catherine Gallagher and Stephen Greenblatt will supplement the thesis in order to address structuralism’s limitations and to give this analysis more depth via a socio-cultural approach. Objectives include the intent for analyzing the film via structuralism, comparing the film to related games and media, and studying the film via a socio-cultural perspective. Findings include the successful dissection of the film and proper categorization of each scenario to Propp’s analysis’ functions. Also, New Historicism provides facts supporting the significance of the film as a reflective piece of literature on a particular prevailing attitude Filipinos towards games. Finally, the study also provides a brief comparison and analysis of the games related to RPG Metanoia and reveals the inspiration and motivations behinds the conceptualization of the film. The conclusion confirms RPG Metanoia as a legitimate literary narrative as well as label it as falling under the category of literature structurally similar to folk tales. It also highlights several points regarding the importance of the film as a literary fantasy referencing to the effects of games and technology on the Philippines’ youth and culture.

Brasileño, Hazel Alice P. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1987-03)
This study was conducted to find out the level of television exposure of high school students, to know their study habits, and to find out the relationship between TV exposure and the study habits of UPV high school students. A study was conducted among VP Visayas High School students, where a total of 137 respondents from first, second, third, and fourth year levels provided the major data of the study. A three-page questionnaire was the instrument used in gathering data. It included: respondent’s level of exposure to TV and the student’s study habits. The least part related TV exposure with study habits. Findings revealed that there is 99% television viewer- ship which means that there is a high level of TV exposure among respondents. Number of hours of viewing ranges from 30 minutes to a maximum of six hours. Most of the programs watched were foreign canned shows and were entertainment in nature. Preferred viewing schedule of most students is 7-9 p.m. Findings also showed that most (54%) of the parents imposed restrictions on their children’s viewing, particularly on the number of hours students watched TV. On the other hand, ninety-six percent (96%) of the students studied their lessons. For those who studied majority do 30 everyday for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of three hours. Students preferred to study between 8-10 p.m. Students study mainly to attain high grades. In relating TV exposure and study habits results showed that TV viewing consumes most of the free time of students and that time slotted for study is utilized for viewing the medium. However, TV viewing is also helpful to the students in that it gives them information and ideas which they applied to their lessons. The chi-square test for independence was used to find out if there is a relationship between the two variables TV exposure and study habits. Results showed that there is a relationship between TV exposure and study habits, that is, the more exposed the students are to TV, the greater is the probability that the number of time spent for studying will be lessened.

Bongcayo, Kate Jocelle A.; Marcon, Jo-Ann Marie O. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)
This research study investigates the collaboration of the stakeholders involved in the implementation of Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) Fanners' Training Program and its impact on the socio-economic condition of the local fanners in Municipality of Badiangan and Iloilo City. Using key informant interviews of actors involved in the program implementation and a survey of participants, the dynamics and mechanisms of the stakeholder collaboration and its effects were identified. The data revealed that the KSK was implemented through the joint efforts of SM Foundation (SMFI), regional offices of the national government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and their local counterparts in the governments of Badiangan and Iloilo City, Harbest Agribusiness Corporation, and the venues for the training program, Ephrathah Fanns and Tiu Cho Teg-Ana Ros Foundation Integrated School. These organizations from the public and private sectors worked together, each having a specific role, in conducting the training sessions of the KSK in the span of 12 weeks. The KSK was designed as a dual-tech training program composed of briefing and hands-on field practice. Accordingly, it was assessed by the participants to have a positive impact for both locales since the training program provided more knowledge on farming practices as well as generated more sources of livelihood that led to increased income and improved quality production. Also, the training became a ground for participants to form external social ties and build their networks to gain opportunities to sell their produce in local markets and in large supermarkets.

The picture-superiority effect in candy magazine advertisements based on consumers' level of brand recall
Bomediano, Maria Myka R.; Leyva, Rachell Janine B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)
The picture-superiority effect in candy magazine advertisements based on consumers’ level of brand recall is a study aimed towards helping advertisers formulate effective strategies in magazine advertising and provide insight for fellow researchers on the picture-superiority effect and its relative effects on consumer behavior. In this study, the researchers focused primarily on proving the prevalence of the picture-superiority effect in Candy magazine advertisements. They surveyed 65 female freshmen in UPV-Miagao, each of whom were given a copy of the April 2010 issue of Candy magazine one day prior to the survey. Data gathered were analyzed through frequency count and content analysis of the top three most recalled advertisements and three unrecalled advertisements based on pictorial and verbal elements and the sizes of both. Results showed that the picture-superiority effect is indeed prevalent but discovered that it is not exclusive to brand recall and may also be affected by brand familiarity or past purchase decisions. The latter are then recommended by the researchers as basis for further research.
