Item Conviviality and rebranding the T'nalak Festival's celebration of cultural diversity towards unity in South CotabatoCaaya, Hinz Benedict S., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-07)The T’nalak Festival in South Cotabato has gained attention in recent years due to its entertaining activities and unique cultural experience. During the festival, the multi- ethnoreligious cultures of the province are being highlighted especially in its street dancing event despite the history of conflicts in Mindanao. With an increasing interest in the festival, this study explores the T’nalak festival in the field of Festival Research particularly on the Cultural Studies perspective. Guided by Gerard Delanty’s Theory on Cultural Encounters specifically the encounter of cultural acceptance and Orly Levy et al’s definition of Cosmopolitanism, this study argues that in South Cotabato’s T’nalak Festival cultural acceptance is actively being reinforced for promoting unity in diversity and cosmopolitanism. Furthermore, this allows the province to utilize the festival in rebranding its image away from a province pictured with conflict and violence to a province of peaceful coexistence. Through an oral interview of festival organizers, initiators, tourism employees, community workers, volunteer, and festival participants along with analyzing government reports, pictures, videos, and existing literatures. This study finds that the T’nalak festival is a conscious effort - an invented tradition for the promotion of harmonious relationship among the multi-ethnoreligious population and a strategy that counters the negative perception about South Cotabato. The festival serves as an avenue for promotion, celebration, education and information, preservation, and unity along with the assertion of the individual local and collective community identities.Item Electoral campaign of mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 electionCababasay, Ivy C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-10)This is a descriptive study of the electoral campaign of the six mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 election. The 1992 Leon mayoral candidates were Romulo Cabana, Neri Cabsaba. Alejandro Caelian. Jaime Calosing. Rodolfo Camarista and Ismael Candolada. This study aims to present a profile of the 1992 Leon mayoral candidates: to determine the campaign resources; to analyze the campaign organization and the campaign strategies of the mayoral candidates during the electoral campaign: to analyze the voters' choice and perceptions of the 1992 Leon mayoral electoral campaign; and, to analyze the electoral campaign of the mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon. To satisfy these objectives, the researcher interviewed the mayoral candidates, some of their family members, their campaign staff and/or their representatives. A questionnaire was also formulated and was administered to the respondents. The findings of the study reveal that almost all of the mayoral candidates came from prominent families. Most of them came from the upper-middle class families except for Cabana and Cabsaba who considered their family as belonging to the lower class. Except for Romulo Cabana, all mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon were college graduates. Except for Calosing and Camarista all four mayoral candidates had ran for an elective office prior to the 1992 election. The campaign resources, particularly the material resources of a candidate were the determining factor in the success of his electoral campaign. It was also found out that most of the mayoral candidates have no formal structural organization in their electoral campaign except for Cabana and Calosing. Campaign strategies common among the mayoral candidates were holding of caucus in the barangays, distribution of leaflets, stickers, sample ballots and posting of streamers and other campaign materials. Character assasination and mudslinging were also present in the campaign. Voters were more interested in the personal issues raised against the mayoral candidates than their proposed programs of government or public concerns. They (voters) voted for the mayoral candidate based on the latter's personality or personal attributes. Personalities are more remembered than social and political issues. Although there was vote-buying in the 1992 election, the mayoral candidates and the voters themselves considered it peaceful and orderly due to the absence of violence.Item Subalternity in the Cebuano poems of Michael Obenieta: A postcolonial approach to the study of the selected Cebuano poems of Michael ObenietaBuac, Abigail C. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-04)This study examines eleven Cebuano poems of Michael "Myke" Obenieta and reviews cultural-historical studies related to the concept of subalternity as an aspect of postcolonialism. The researcher examines the prevalent literary elements in each poem; discusses the subalterns. discourses in them; and ascertain the author's role in the Cebuano literary culture. The prevalent literary element in Myke's poems is imagery. Other literary elements present are similes, metaphors, personifications, and hyperboles which contribute to the effectiveness of imagery. The style of writing employed by the author is adopted from the Western way of writing — the free verse - although he uses the formal Cebuano language in presenting images of Cebuanos and the aspects of their everyday life. These eleven Cebuano poems contain symbols and images of subjugation, absorption, domination, and subordination which characterizes the Cebuanos as subalterns. The author is native of Cebu but he left the country to live in Kansas City for reasons not only for greener pastures but for a place where he could establish himself as a poet in the light of where he came from. Myke, as he explores the Cebuano culture and reflect them in these eleven poems, contribute to the development of the Cebuano literature; a new trend in the study of Cebuano literary culture.Item A discourse on RPG metanoia using a structural analysis and sociocultural approachBriones, John Nathaniel B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03-17)This paper is a study on RPG Metanoia, a Filipino computer generated film released in December 2010. The film features a hero and his adventures in real life and as a player of the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Metanoia. This thesis will be studying RPG Metanoia for the sake of adding academic knowledge regarding computer games themed media and pop culture in literature. Using analysis by Vladimir Propp RPG Metanoia will be subject to formalist structuralism in order to analyze the literary structure of the film. A study by Catherine Gallagher and Stephen Greenblatt will supplement the thesis in order to address structuralism’s limitations and to give this analysis more depth via a socio-cultural approach. Objectives include the intent for analyzing the film via structuralism, comparing the film to related games and media, and studying the film via a socio-cultural perspective. Findings include the successful dissection of the film and proper categorization of each scenario to Propp’s analysis’ functions. Also, New Historicism provides facts supporting the significance of the film as a reflective piece of literature on a particular prevailing attitude Filipinos towards games. Finally, the study also provides a brief comparison and analysis of the games related to RPG Metanoia and reveals the inspiration and motivations behinds the conceptualization of the film. The conclusion confirms RPG Metanoia as a legitimate literary narrative as well as label it as falling under the category of literature structurally similar to folk tales. It also highlights several points regarding the importance of the film as a literary fantasy referencing to the effects of games and technology on the Philippines’ youth and culture.Item Philippine Armed Forces different response towards different communists insurgents in the Island of Panay a comparative study on the 47th Infantry Battalion and 32nd Civil Relations UnitBrillantes, Jarrah S.; Tanate, Marianie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)Communist insurgency is one of the most long withstanding national security problem in the Philippines. There has been no ebb in the counter insurgency measures of the government since the Marcos regime to the present. However, the changes in the communist organization brought about institutional changes on the military’s part. In the current counterinsurgency operations by the armed forces units, there is now an emphasis on unarmed approaches such as civil-military operations, propaganda, psychological warfare and socio-civic activities, instead of just solely conducting armed approaches. Linkages, coordination and collaboration with the local government units in promoting development became significant elements in counterinsurgency operations. This paper examines the different kinds of approaches undertaken by the 47th Infantry Battalion at Calinog, Iloilo and the Civil Relation Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (CRSAFP) in Camp Delgado, Iloilo City toward communist insurgents. The 47th IB and the 32nd CRU are currently conducting a triad approach in the counterinsurgency operations. This triad approach includes combat operations, intelligence and socio-civic operations. In delegating the command from commanding officer to the operating units, the chain of command is well observed and followed. In addressing the insurgency problem, the AFP units have high regards toward local government authorities. Education, training and years in service as well as coordination and cooperation with local civil counterparts affect their competence in operations undertaken.Item A tale of two pantries: The case of Iloilo City in time of COVID -19 pandemicBolinas, Neil Alfred L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-07)This case study focuses on the community pantries in Barangay Mansaya- Lapuz, Lapuz and Barangay Rizal, La Paz, Iloilo City. Documentation and analysis of the two community pantries were conducted using the data gathered from Key- Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions. The simple logic model for Theory of Change (W. K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004) was used as the theoretical framework of the study and guided the analysis. The study showed that two major factors motivated the organization of the pantry. The personal motivations revolved around the organizers’ personal beliefs and principles and the societal motivations includes the increment of poverty and food insecurity experienced by community members. Resources are a vital component of the pantries as this dictates the pantries’ operation and services. The provision of food was the main goal of the pantries, while the objectives focused differently among organizers. During the operations, there are issues and challenges that occurred but were not able to affect the operation of the community pantries. The emergence and operations of the pantry affected community members through their values, practices, and change in socioeconomic conditions. The pantries also produced realizations among the organizers and barangay officials particularly on improving the access to basic needs of the members of the community. The community pantry proved to be significant in addressing food insecurity during crisis times, however the intervention is only a short-term response. Furthermore, the communities are encouraged to address food insecurity guided by needs assessment analysis, strong community engagement, regular budget allocation for the vulnerable families, strong public-partnership, and consistent monitoring and evaluation which are critical components of a community-based food security program learned from their experience.Item The Chinese traders of Bacolod CityBitanga, Sherman H. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-03)This study on “The Chinese Migrants of Bacolod City” documents and analyzes factors which motivated Chinese settlement in the city of Bacolod and their integration into the mainstream of Philippines society. It sheds light and a deeper understanding about their Chineseness and to the history of Chinese migrants in Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City. The most recent Chinese migration to Bacolod City began after World War II. The pioneer migrants were those who put up business establishments in different parts of Bacolod City. The establishment of Capitol Shopping Center as the new commercial locale after the 1955 fire which destroyed the commercial are of Bacolod City, attracted these Chinese migrants to transfer their business into the area. These migrants predominantly came from the southeastern provinces of China, namely, Fukien and Kwangtung. Most of these migrants hail from the cities of Amoy (Fukien) and Canton (Kwangtung). The migrants who followed were relatives and neighbors who preferred to settle in Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City. This where the greatest concentration of Chinese in Bacolod are found and where the greatest number of Chinese owned and operated business establishments are located. The Chinese migrants live scattered within the said community. At present time, only a few of the original Chinese migrants continue to live in the area. Some of them, especially the younger generation of Chinese immigrants, live in other parts of Bacolod City and consider themselves well integrated into their new home area. The migrants made adjustments to their new social system. The hardships and problems they encountered at their place of settlement, were due to their distinct culture and adherence to their Chineseness. Ideas and external behaviors of second-generation migrants reveal that the Chinese residents of Bacolod City have largely adopted to the ways of the Filipinos. Because of close and constant interactions that they have with the native residents, the younger generation of Chinese migrants show less adherence to their Chineseness than the pioneers who continued to concentrate on the affairs of their business and homes.Item Fidelity of the film adaptation of the novel "Fifty shades of grey"Billones, Toni Rose D.; Tumbagahan, Angelique S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This undergraduate thesis is a critical analysis of film adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey to find out its fidelity to the novel in terms of character, setting, and plot using the Theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and the interpretation of film adaptations by John Desmond and Peter Hawkes. This study highlights the characteristics of the film as a medium especially when it is adapted from a literary work and selves as a guide for filmmakers in adapting literary works. It recommends that film producers should work with the author to create a more faithful adaptation especially to novel series like Fifty Shades. The analysis uses a codebook designed to allow cues to be counted and tallied to determine the elements carried over in the film adaptation. The researchers conclude that the film Fifty Shades of Grey is an intermediate adaptation of the novel with certain narrative elements specifically the character, setting and plot, undergoing addition or deletion in the adaptation process. The dropping of some characters caused a domino-effect on the other elements such as the setting and plot events. The film adaptation changed the mood of the story, from a very explicit into a more subtle form, by adding scenes that can be categorized as romantic rather than sensualItem The operation of the Lupon Tagapamayapa in selected barangays of Jaro, Iloilo CityBetita, Jomar Alyzar A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-04)This research analyzes the efficiency of the operation of the Lupon Tagapamayapa in selected barangays of Jaro, Iloilo City. Its objectives cover analysis of aspects of the operation of the lupon within the area, such as the adequacy of knowledge that the members of the lupon have regarding amicable settlement procedures, the adherence of the lupon to the functions set by the Katarungang Pambarangay Law, the settlement cases handled by the lupon within the area and the results of these disputes and the problems encountered by the lupon in its operation. This study showed that majority of the Lupon members have inadequate knowledge regarding the operation of the Lupon and lacks the necessary knowhow in the implementation of amicable settlement in the area. Majority of the lupon in the area failed to meet the second function set by the law which is to conduct monthly meetings. The research also pointed out the deviations committed by the lupon in enforcing amicable settlement. The problems of the lupon deal mostly with the lack of financial support extended to them by the government.Item Comparison of direct microscopy and concentration techniques using household bleach for the detection of acid-fast bacilli in sputumBernabe, John Marvin S.; Biaoco, Beverly G.; Castillanes, Melvic A.; Fernandez, Ia Jean F.; Geraldoy, Ruffa V.; Molina, Ryge Albert D.; Pluma, Zyra April D.; Que, Agnes Karen B.; Servidad, Mercy Jeane C.; Tamayo, Kyria Mae Marre P. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03-29)Several published studies have demonstrated that the sedimentation and centrifugation concentration techniques which utilize sodium hypochlorite are more efficient in detecting acid fast bacilli in sputum smears compared to the conventional direct smear method. This study was conducted to (1) compare the proportion of AFB-positive samples by direct microscopy with the household bleach centrifugation concentration technique; (2) compare the proportion of AFB-positive samples by direct microscopy with the household bleach sedimentation concentration technique;(3) compare the proportion of AFB-positive samples by household bleach sedimentation with the centrifugation concentration techniques; and (4) compare the cost of the direct smear method, centrifugation concentration technique, and sedimentation concentration technique for detection of AFB. Sputum specimens were collected from TB-DOTS clinics in Miag-ao and San Joaquin, Iloilo and from Medicus laboratories in Iloilo City. The specimens were then processed through the direct smear method, centrifugation concentration method, and sedimentation concentration method. Out of 174 sputum samples included in this study, results revealed that (1) there was no significant difference in the proportions of AFB-positive slides detected using the direct microscopy and centrifugation concentration technique; (2) there was no significant difference in the proportions of AFB-positive slides detected using the direct microscopy and sedimentation concentration technique; (3) there was no significant difference in the proportions of AFB-positive slides detected using the centrifugation and the sedimentation concentration techniques; and (4) simple cost analysis of the three methods suggests that the direct smear method is the most cost efficient. The findings indicate that whichever method is used would yield almost the same proportions of AFB-positive slides. Internal quality control should be maintained throughout the laboratory work to obtain reliable results, as it is the manner of processing that determines the outcome of this study and its validity.
