Written words: A descriptive study on the uses and gratifications of wattpad writers
Bernardo, Crystal Liz P.; Castor, Jizette Joy J.; Poly, Rhyene Janne S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
This descriptive study is on the uses and gratifications of Filipino romance writers for writing in Wattpad, a free online writing community. The study is best explained by the Uses and Gratifications Theory of Blumler and Katz which states that specific forms of media content are sought out by the audience members based upon their individual need satisfactions. An online survey of 37 Filipino Wattpad romance writers shows the main use for writing in Wattpad is diversion or escape from the daily stress. The strongest gratification satisfied by Wattpad is affective or expression of emotion, pleasure, and aesthetic experiences. The result indicates that gender is a major influential factor in their uses and gratifications gained from writing in Wattpad. Wattpad empowers people who love writing not only because it is a free writing community but more so because it gives writers a sense of freedom from stress and freedom to express themselves.

There are two types of TV news program format, standard format and tabloid format. Both formats are guided by four elements: segment, news selection, news delivery and language. Survey was used in measuring the knowledge of Ilonggo viewers on the program format of TV Patrol and 24 Oras. The study covered 12 barangays in Iloilo City with 400 respondents. Results of the data-gathering process showed that TV Patrol is in tabloid format while 24 Oras is in standard format. News delivery is the most tabloid element of TV Patrol while Language is the most standard element of 24 Oras. Both formats have implications to the viewers’ knowledge and perception towards the reality of news stories.

Constraints and challenges on the use of emerging media among public high school teachers
Benjamin, Louangel Jei D.; Guillen, Kaya A. (Division of Humanties, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, the Department of Education implemented distance learning which is primarily module-based to accommodate those that do not have the resources. However, literature has shown that teachers still use emerging media in order to communicate with their students. This study aimed to find out the constraints and challenges experienced when using emerging media during distance learning. It was guided by the social presence theory which centers on the differences in the degree of social presence using telecommunications media and how these differences affect the communication in terms of constraints and challenges. Using quantitative research design and a descriptive survey method, public junior high school teachers were given survey questionnaires to report their experiences on the use of emerging media. The results of this study revealed that emerging media plays a significant role despite distance learning being modulebased. The challenges are caused by the digital divide that led to the lack of budget and technological infrastructure while constraints are more concerned with the intimacy and immediacy depending on where the type of emerging media falls on the social presence scale. Overall, the challenges and constraints encountered by the respondents in using emerging media affects the communication and by extension, the teaching and learning experience in distance learning.

Level of intention to use GIS among online journalists
Bayog, Katrina Coleen; Buensuceso, Dayanara; Sabando, Fydah Marie (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)
Geographical Information System or GIS is a new technology being used by different international news organizations to provide a more comprehensive reporting for their consumers. GIS is a data visualization tool which maps out the news articles linked to where they have happened, providing a more sophisticated visual output. However, despite the potential of GIS in journalism and reporting, there has been a limited use of this system in local and national news reporting, both online and on print in the Philippines. This study looks into the level of intention to use GIS by local online newspaper journalists in online news reporting. Using a framework derived from the Technology Acceptance Model and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, the researchers employ a non-experimental relational study design to determine which is the strongest predictor for intention to use GIS among the three constructs of UTAUT model—Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy and Social Influence. Their findings show that PPI-member journalists in Western Visayas had a high intention to use GIS in their online news reporting. The researchers recommend, for future study, the employment of the “actual use” construct of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and/or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). They also encourage an experimental design with the controlled and uncontrolled variables in conducting the test. This can give an accurate comparative depiction of journalists who were exposed to the explainer video from those who were not exposed.

Critical analysis of local newspapers' design
Barbon, Krisna C.; Macahilo, September Noon A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)
The study, "Critical Analysis of Local Newspaper Design", gives the idea of how local newspapers in Iloilo are designed through evaluation of the four elements of design namely headline, text, photo, cutline and the over-all layout of the front page. The duration for the evaluation occurred for a span of four weeks. The subjects for the study were the seven newspapers found in Iloilo City. As a result of the evaluation, it has been found out that in headline layouting, all seven newspapers failed to be consistent in following the line-column formula and the 5-10 words headline guideline. In text layouting, the common problems are the measurements of the legs of columns and jump stories. For photos found in the front page, most of them do not have borders and with excessive use of photo cliches. The photos all look natural but do not suggest actions. For cutline, not all newspapers observed proper placement which should be outside the photo. For the overall layout, majority of the newspapers have balance. The researchers observed that there is a need to improve the front page layout of local newspapers in Iloilo City.

The classification and regulation of AM Radio programs
Balagosa, Sheena Marie K. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)
The study "The Classification and Regulation of AM Radio Programs" provides us the reasons why there is a need to classify and reinforce regulation on AM radio programs based on the MTRCB guidelines, the KBP Code, and the opinion of Ilonggo radio listeners and broadcast practitioners. The study covered 12 barangays with 400 respondents and eight broadcast practitioners from four AM radio stations in Iloilo City. From the results of the study, we have found out that radio stations created program innovations that affected the listeners. There is a need to put classification in order to separate sensitive topics that are not suitable for all listeners, to protect children by knowing which programs they can listen to, to avoid hearing double meaning words, extremely violent stories and sensitive topics about sex. There is a need to reinforce regulation because of the failure to adhere to broadcast standards of some radio programs, KBP's leniency in the implementation of its rules and regulation and the effectiveness of self-regulation. Thus, we have the determined that there is a need to put classification and to reinforce regulation in AM radio programs to protect the moral values of Filipino radio listeners.

Relationship between media exposure and attitude of Iloilo City Junior High School students towards indigenous peoples
Amon, Abigail; Garzon, Ma. Mercedes (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-05)
This research discusses the relationship between media exposure and the attitude of selected Iloilo City public junior high school students towards the indigenous peoples. Three hundred junior high school students from Bo. Obrero National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Mandurriao National High School, Ramon Avanceña National High School, and SPED - Integrated School for Exceptional Children served as respondents to a five-part questionnaire that included demographics, exposure to media and IPs, attitude, additional questions regarding the relationship between their media exposure and their attitude towards IPs, and the information they received and wished to receive from media. The researchers found that students were most exposed to online media and that they had low exposure to mediated content on indigenous peoples on all media platforms. It was concluded that respondents had an overall positive attitude towards indigenous peoples. Moreover, both the media industry and the educational system should be more responsible in supporting the IPs through wider media coverage and introduction to more media platforms.

Text and context of the songs of Gloc9 (2003-2012)
Alorro, Mary Joanne F.; Sevillano, Kristine Charisse B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)
This descriptive study was conducted to ascertain the text and context of the songs of Gloc9 from 2003-2012. Forty (40) songs with societal issues were determined, classified to which presidential term (Arroyo's or Aquino's) they were released and analyzed if they reflect the real Philippine setting at the given period. The results showed that many of the songs of Gloc9 did not exactly reflect the real-life setting of Filipinos under the two presidential eras they belonged thus as a medium, the songs created a Constructed Mediated Reality. However, songs that mentioned issues such as poverty, unemployment, abuse of power and drug abuse were reflective of period they were written. Nevertheless, rap song is a good medium not only for entertainment but also for information. It is one of the most effective medium to bring awareness to the public by presenting relevant societal issues in a rap music format. To further improve this study, future researchers should do a triangulated research method.

Endangered: An investigative documentary on the factors that led to journalist assaults in the Philippines
Ardillos, Faith; Llanes, Mae Gladys; Ventar, Jeremae (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
This qualitative study was conducted to identify and investigate the factors that led to journalist assaults in the Philippines and to present the result of the investigation through a creative output in a form of an investigative documentary. The objectives of the study are answered though interviews with two long-serving journalists and six experts who have knowledge about journalist assaults, media laws and policies, and the Philippine media landscape. Results of this study showed that as journalists function as watchdogs of the government and of the society, the issues they covered made them as primary target of assaults. Since Philippines is a democratic country, these reported assaults pose threats to freedom of the press and of expression. The continuous cases of assaults create a chilling effect to some who eventually resort to self-censorship but these assaults also affect some journalists to be more critical and vigilant in reporting about the significant issues in the society like graft and corruption.
