    Online masterpieces: DeviantArt as a platform of self-expression for Filipinos

    This thesis was written to explore the usage of the second generation of Web 2.0, specifically DeviantArt, on how Filipinos can use it for their own self-serving ends. The specific problem of the study is: How DeviantArt can act as a platform for self-expression for Filipino artists? The research objectives formulated includes: describing DeviantArt's functions, describing the typical Filipino users/contributors on the site, identifying the different artworks submitted, analyzing the functions of DeviantArt in relation to the artworks, and evaluating DeviantArt in how effective it is in satisfying the needs of artists. Out of more than 3, 000 members of the Filipino-Artists group, 51 were able to answer the provided questionnaire. Based on the general trends of the results, the site achieves the gratifications sought by online users. Owing to the variety and flexibility of available functions of DeviantArt, contributors are able to post and organize artwork that suits their own interests, allowing the promotion of skill and attracting reputation amongothers.

    Sexual politics in selected Cuyunon folk songs

    The purpose of this study is to examine the sexual political condition of Cuyunon women as portrayed in the folk songs of Cuyo, Palawan. As one of the studies that examine Philippine folk literature using a feminist lens, this study seeks to uncover how deeply ingrained the patriarchal norms and values are in the Cuyunon and Palaweño society through a sexual political analysis of the Cuyunon folk songs. The analysis of the texts has two parts: the first part analyzes the binary oppositions of gender roles present in the songs, and the second part analyzes the sexual politics in the songs. After the analysis of the songs, it is found out that most of the songs portray traditional gender roles for men and women, and that the perpetuation of gender roles and stereotypes play a big role in the oppression of women. This study has concluded that according to the Cuyunon folk songs. Cuyunon women are only temporarily empowered during the courtship phase, but they still occupy an inferior position in the sexual politics of their society. Furthermore, this study has also concluded that aside from reflecting the patriarchal culture of the Cuyunon society, the Cuyunon folk songs are tools for the propagation and normalization of patriarchal culture as they are sang and heard again and again.

    Framing of 2016 television political advertisements

    Television political advertisement is the primary means of modern political campaign to communicate with their potential voters. Hence, modern political advertisements are driven with marketing strategies that made a major impact on the outcome of individual election. But scholars find it difficult to understand the effect and effectiveness of these communications and at the same time the persuasive tool being used. This study aims to answer what are the most prominent and the least framing categories used in presidential, vice presidential and senatorial candidates in 2016 television political campaign per position, and when taken as a whole, their attributed significance and implications in the Philippine Political System. It analyzed a total of 21 political campaign ads using the four categories: Emotion, Persuasion, Factual claims and Cinematic style. The study utilized the framing theory under the Agenda Setting by Maxwell McCombs and Donald. Moreover, the study found out that the most prominent category was Emotion. While the least framing category recorded was the category of Factual claims. To further analyze the result, the researchers delve into the Filipino psyche. After a thorough analysis it was found out that Filipinos prefer image over substance, on personality over issues and that media crafted the way it appeals to them

    The uses and gratifications of reading fan fiction among Ilongga teens

    Fan fiction has become quite the internet trend especially among female teens that the researchers sought to find out why readers read fan fiction and what underlying needs of the readers are gratified by fan fiction. Fan fiction is all about fictional stories written by fans on real celebrities that are either published or posted online. The study is based on Katz and Blumler’s Uses and Gratifications theory, which explains the uses and functions of the media for individuals, be it of groups, and society in general. It is a survey done on to 350 female students at the Iloilo National High School (INHS) using descriptive statistics as its method of analysis. Findings reveal that Wattpad is the most used platform in accessing fan fiction and the most read stories are under Romance. The results also show the primary use for the respondents as to why they read fan fiction is stimulation or to develop their creativity and spark their imagination. Moreover, the gratifications acquired by the readers, which are cognitive or acquiring knowledge, information, and comprehensions are parallel to why they read fan fiction in the first place. The lowest rated use is socialization and the lowest rated gratification is social integrative which are also parallel to each other Reading fan fiction for the respondents, allows them to be more motivated and to be more inventive. Although, fan fiction does not necessarily help in improving the social lives of the readers.

    Love teams vs. love teens: How the scripted relationships affect the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on REALationships

    Aside from being the second most avid television consumers, Filipinos especially teenagers, have become increasingly immersed to watching romantic-themed teleseryes by the different emerging love teams such as JaDine and KathNiel. The evident fandom to these love teams lead to the conduct of the study to identify the effects of the scripted portrayal of a romantic love and relationship to the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on romantic love. Research design using qualitative and quantitative approach was utilized. George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory was used to answer how exposure affects the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on romantic love. The survey was conducted among 90 qualified respondents across (3) three public high schools in Miag-ao, Iloilo. The 5—point Likert scale was used to measure the influence of the two love teams' teleseyes in the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers. Results show that high exposure on teleseryes affect teenagers' perceptions and attitudes on romantic love as portrayed by the love teams. However, it was also noted as per results, that not all that were shown in the teleseryes are being mirrored by teenagers as real since they also critic if those depictions of romantic love really happen in reality.

    Fidelity of the film adaptation of the novel "Fifty shades of grey"

    This undergraduate thesis is a critical analysis of film adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey to find out its fidelity to the novel in terms of character, setting, and plot using the Theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and the interpretation of film adaptations by John Desmond and Peter Hawkes. This study highlights the characteristics of the film as a medium especially when it is adapted from a literary work and selves as a guide for filmmakers in adapting literary works. It recommends that film producers should work with the author to create a more faithful adaptation especially to novel series like Fifty Shades. The analysis uses a codebook designed to allow cues to be counted and tallied to determine the elements carried over in the film adaptation. The researchers conclude that the film Fifty Shades of Grey is an intermediate adaptation of the novel with certain narrative elements specifically the character, setting and plot, undergoing addition or deletion in the adaptation process. The dropping of some characters caused a domino-effect on the other elements such as the setting and plot events. The film adaptation changed the mood of the story, from a very explicit into a more subtle form, by adding scenes that can be categorized as romantic rather than sensual

    Written words: A descriptive study on the uses and gratifications of wattpad writers

    This descriptive study is on the uses and gratifications of Filipino romance writers for writing in Wattpad, a free online writing community. The study is best explained by the Uses and Gratifications Theory of Blumler and Katz which states that specific forms of media content are sought out by the audience members based upon their individual need satisfactions. An online survey of 37 Filipino Wattpad romance writers shows the main use for writing in Wattpad is diversion or escape from the daily stress. The strongest gratification satisfied by Wattpad is affective or expression of emotion, pleasure, and aesthetic experiences. The result indicates that gender is a major influential factor in their uses and gratifications gained from writing in Wattpad. Wattpad empowers people who love writing not only because it is a free writing community but more so because it gives writers a sense of freedom from stress and freedom to express themselves.
