    Online masterpieces: DeviantArt as a platform of self-expression for Filipinos

    This thesis was written to explore the usage of the second generation of Web 2.0, specifically DeviantArt, on how Filipinos can use it for their own self-serving ends. The specific problem of the study is: How DeviantArt can act as a platform for self-expression for Filipino artists? The research objectives formulated includes: describing DeviantArt's functions, describing the typical Filipino users/contributors on the site, identifying the different artworks submitted, analyzing the functions of DeviantArt in relation to the artworks, and evaluating DeviantArt in how effective it is in satisfying the needs of artists. Out of more than 3, 000 members of the Filipino-Artists group, 51 were able to answer the provided questionnaire. Based on the general trends of the results, the site achieves the gratifications sought by online users. Owing to the variety and flexibility of available functions of DeviantArt, contributors are able to post and organize artwork that suits their own interests, allowing the promotion of skill and attracting reputation amongothers.

    Written words: A descriptive study on the uses and gratifications of wattpad writers

    This descriptive study is on the uses and gratifications of Filipino romance writers for writing in Wattpad, a free online writing community. The study is best explained by the Uses and Gratifications Theory of Blumler and Katz which states that specific forms of media content are sought out by the audience members based upon their individual need satisfactions. An online survey of 37 Filipino Wattpad romance writers shows the main use for writing in Wattpad is diversion or escape from the daily stress. The strongest gratification satisfied by Wattpad is affective or expression of emotion, pleasure, and aesthetic experiences. The result indicates that gender is a major influential factor in their uses and gratifications gained from writing in Wattpad. Wattpad empowers people who love writing not only because it is a free writing community but more so because it gives writers a sense of freedom from stress and freedom to express themselves.

    Selfies: Managing identities on Facebook among UPV students

    This study is a descriptive research on the filters commonly used in self-presentation on Facebook among college students. It describes the level of self-presentation and identifies the factors that influence self-presentation through selfies. The data comes from 310 undergraduate students of the University of the Philippines Visayas College of Arts and Sciences in school year 2015-2016, selected through purposive sampling and with the use of a standardized questionnaire distributed through snowball technique. Data analysis makes use of descriptive statistics such as measures of central tendency using frequency, percentage distribution and rank. The researchers conclude that there is an existing pattern on how respondents filter their selfies on Facebook. These filters are in terms of size, focus, angle, location, and occasion. The data also shows the manifestation of culture and relationships in posting selfies on Facebook. This research supports the theory Identity Management which suggests that identities are managed by individuals at different junctures of their culture and relationships. This study also concludes that UPV CAS students use selfies as a means of self-presentation and that the respondents agree towards positive self-presentation on Facebook.
