Item A content analysis of 12 episodes of the radio comedy-drama Toyang ErmitanyaBantiquete, Theola H.; Galanza, Siena Therese M.; Gersabalino, Jeniffer G. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)This study “A Content Analysis of the Radio-Comedy Drama Toyang Ermitanya” aims:(1) to identify the various issues presented in the 12 episodes of the drama (Episodes 256-267, aired in July 2003); (2) to classify the issues into different categories such as political, social, economic, religious, educational and others (gender issues); (3) to determine which of the six categories are frequently raised, and; (4) to determine whether or not the drama reflects social reality. The researchers used a sell-devised descriptive code sheet in analyzing and categorizing the issues that are presented in the drama. They set six categories where each issue would fall. Percentage distribution was used to determine which among the six categories is frequently raised. They also provided actual samples of the issues under each category, quoted in the Hiligaynon language with its corresponding translation in English. Researched on the events that happened in July 2003--the time when the 12 episodes were aired over Bombo Rady Iloilo— were then related to the issues that were presented in the 12 episodes of the drama in order to determine whether or not Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. This study is significant for it provides an in-depth treatment of the societal issues, thus, making people aware of the prevalent issues confronting the society at the same time. Second, it serves as an important tool in analyzing the role of media in presenting various issues of the society in a manner that almost everyone can relate to. In the process, it will guide media practitioners in producing a satirical program that will catch the interest, and at the same time, meet the need of the society in terms of information and entertainment. The researchers identified 163 issues that were raised in the 12 episodes of the drama Toyang Ermitanya. Results of the study show that social issues are frequently raised in the drama. It is followed by political, economic, religious, others (gender issues), and finally, educational which got a zero percentage. Using the Cone-effect theory, the study shows that Radio Comedy-Drama Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. The study would have been better if the researchers interviewed the producer/ scriptwriter of Toyang Ermitanya. For future researchers, the researchers recommend that research on another radio drama be done to further validate this study’s claim that radio dramas are not only for entertainment, but, are also a good source of information and reflect social realities.Item The classification and regulation of AM Radio programsBalagosa, Sheena Marie K. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)The study "The Classification and Regulation of AM Radio Programs" provides us the reasons why there is a need to classify and reinforce regulation on AM radio programs based on the MTRCB guidelines, the KBP Code, and the opinion of Ilonggo radio listeners and broadcast practitioners. The study covered 12 barangays with 400 respondents and eight broadcast practitioners from four AM radio stations in Iloilo City. From the results of the study, we have found out that radio stations created program innovations that affected the listeners. There is a need to put classification in order to separate sensitive topics that are not suitable for all listeners, to protect children by knowing which programs they can listen to, to avoid hearing double meaning words, extremely violent stories and sensitive topics about sex. There is a need to reinforce regulation because of the failure to adhere to broadcast standards of some radio programs, KBP's leniency in the implementation of its rules and regulation and the effectiveness of self-regulation. Thus, we have the determined that there is a need to put classification and to reinforce regulation in AM radio programs to protect the moral values of Filipino radio listeners.Item A study on the performance of the regulatory functions of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcaster sa Pilipinas Iloilo ChapterAdvincula, Rebecca (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1987-03)Generally, regulations are viewed as important factors in the functions of an industry or organization. Like any other industry, broadcasting needs to he regulated. The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas is a self-regulatory body which implements regulations affecting the programming operations of the Broadcast stations. However, not all regulations are said to be followed by the stations. It is in this regard that this study was conducted. Three factors were considered in finding out whether KBP regulations are important to the operations of the stations: the importance and necessity of these regulations; the capability of the KBP in implementing these regulations; and the extent of public participation between KBP and its member stations. The necessity level was determined by a study of each regulatory function, the activities covered by these regulations, and the relative need of the stations to these regulations. The capability level was determined by a study on the frequent observance of the stations to the regulations, the objectives of the respondent stations, and the major output, organizational structure, and budget of the KBP as a regulatory body. Public participation was determined by a study of the frequency used modes of interaction involved in the implementation of the regulations, the problems met in the process, and the respondent stations' rating/assessment of the KBP. The study made use of the one-shot survey design with interview schedule and use of questionnaires as main instruments. The respondents for the KBP are the station managers, while respondents for the regulated are the production staff of the local stations. A total of twelve stations were taken as respondents for the study. Results showed too many regulations are imposed by the KBP and are not strictly followed by the stations. Regulations that are mostly followed are those which pertain to the presentation of news while those often violated pertain to public commentaries and issues, the presentation of materials regarding sex and violence and the airing of commercials. Results showed that these regulations are necessary to maintain a certain level of excellence and professionalism in the broadcast industry, Likewise, the KBP is capable of implementing regulations to the station , as shown by the constant interaction between the regulator and the regulated.Item Toyang Ermitanya and the consumption of Iloilo City proper-based listeners vis-a-vis Miagao-based listenersAbenes, Darren Al B.; Concepcion, Ma. Emilee Anne R.; Paren, Ryan M. (Division of Social Sciences , College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-10)This study sought to study the following: 1) the consumption of listeners from the two groups of respondents from the urban community which is Iloilo City Proper vis a vis the rural community of Miagao, and 2) the way the listeners perceive such radio drama whether as something which convey issues in the society or as something which is purely entertaining. The researchers used two major steps in data gathering: survey and indepth interviews. One hundred respondents who were listeners of such drama participated, half of which came from both groups of respondents who were Iloilo City Proper-based and Miagao-based. The survey revealed that Iloilo City Proper-based respondents have a higher frequency of exposure to such drama compared Miagao-based respondents. It was also revealed that majority of the respondents from each group of respondents perceived Toyang Ermitanya as entertaining however, majority also claimed that they were also learning lessons and insights from it. Moreover, with the results and data collected and analyzed, the research itself revealed three prevailing forms in the consumption of such radio drama by both groups of listeners. First, Toyang Ermitanya as a medium for emotional release. Second, as a form of enjoyment. And third, Toyang Ermitanya as a medium where one could obtain pieces of information and advice from listening to it.Item The perceptions and gratifications of Ilonggo Shock Talk-Radio listenersAbad, Catherine Grace; Francisco, Franz C.; Gador, Fevie Anne (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)Shock Talk Radio Programs are gaining multitudes of listeners within Iloilo. Mama Monyeka and Talk to Papa ,two of the most popular Shock Talk-Radio programs, are the subject of the research. In this study the researchers assessed the different perceptions and gratification sought and obtained by Ilonggo listeners with different educational orientation; Out-of-School Youth, High school, and College. The researchers used descriptive research design and survey questionnaires to gather information. Result showed the OSY are the ones with the most positive perception towards Shock Talk-radio programs, followed by the High School Group and the and lastly the College group. Also the gratification that is mainly sought is entertainment needs among the three groups. Albeit needs such as information, personal identify and social interaction were also identified as needs that the audience seek to satisfy. For gratifications obtained it was shown that only 5% among the total number of the respondent claimed that needs outside entertainment have been met by these programs. The need which was satisfied the most by these programs again is the entertainment need. Using the Theory of Uses and Gratifications it was found out that the audiences' physical environment (in here educational orientation) affects the perception towards a media content (Shock Talk - radio programs) and influences his/her reasons for consumption (gratification sought).Finally media content such as Shock Talk- radio programs answer the audience' needs.
