Print media exposure and the attitude of graduating mass and broadcast communication students toward classified ads
Cabanilla, Richelle T. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1988-02)
Hypothetically, frequency of exposure to an object or idea affects one’s attitude toward it. Such premise was used for this particular study. An attempt is made to determine if any relationship exists between exposure to print media, specifically to newspapers, and attitude toward the classified ads. Totalling 67 in all, graduating Mass and Broadcast Communication students of School Year 1986-87 in Iloilo City, were made as respondents. A set of questionnaires were handed out to them and the line of inquiry covered the areas from frequency of newspaper reading to behavioral inclinations or action tendencies toward the classified ads. Aside from trying to determine the frequency of exposure and what the respondents think of the ads, the questionnaire was also designed to deal with the three components of attitude: the cognitive, affective and the behavioral. One concept about the nature of attitude is taken from the Latent Process Viewpoint which incidentally is used as a guide in this study. The viewpoint surmises that attitude is a hidden mental or neural process which takes place in the individual. As such, one limitation in the study of attitude is that it is not directly observable. Inferences about one’s attitude can only be based from the study of overt behavioral responses. Theoretically, exposure is considered as the independent variable and attitude as the dependent variable. In actuality however, attitude is more of an intervening variable because the study focuses on the stimulus-response set-up with "attitude" seen as a possible explanation for the causation of response or responses to the stimulus. Based on the data gathered, the respondents are in general, favorably disposed toward the classified ads. The positive attitude is connected somehow with the respondents' belief that the classified section is primarily informative and entertaining at the same time. To prove or disprove the hypothesis, a contingency table was constructed for the computation of the chi-square. The table included the respondents’ frequency of newspaperreading and whether they like or dislike the ads. The computation of the chi-square nullifies the hypothesis that students who like and dislike the classified ads differ in their frequency of reading the newspapers. Similarly, based on the data gathered, a couple of hypotheses were formulated. One, students who have a favorable and unfavorable descriptions of the classified ads differ in belief on the ads’ capacity to provide for their purposes or motives in reading them. Two, students who have and don’t have any action tendencies toward the classified ads differ in their belief on possible gains which can be derived from them. The study of attitude per se is complex thus further researches are recommended.

Acosta, Meryll Joyce; Rojo, Rea Ann; Yulo, Novy Katherene (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-10)
This study was conducted to find out the trends or patterns in the work profession of BA Broadcast Communication graduates from school years 2001-2002, 2002-2003, and 2003-2004 using sex and major field as variables. It also aims to find out what other jobs BABC graduates have, what factors affected them, and how satisfied are they with their jobs. This study was conducted during the first semester of the school year 2004-2005. Respondents chosen for this study were 140 graduates of BABC from school years 2001-2004. However, only 39 were able to reply. The locale of the study includes various places in the Philippines, mostly Metro Manila, Iloilo City, and Iloilo Province. The research design used in this study is descriptive. Results of the study show that majority of BABC graduates do not end up in the media. Those who were able to get into broadcast-related jobs do not plan to stay for good in their present jobs. On the other hand, those who did not get into broadcast-related jobs plan to pursue these kinds of jobs. The study also shows that most BABC graduates within the said school years are moderately satisfied with their present jobs.

A critical analysis of the movie "Bikini Open"
Aportadera, Ela Vanessa; Azarcon, Rudylyne; Baldeviso, Donna Marie; Novelo, Fiona; Punsalan, Jona Marie (Division Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-10-21)
This study entitled "A Critical Analysis of the Movie Bikini Open," will find out whether the said film affirms the real state of Philippine Mass Media. The study aims to identify the issues on Phi lippine media depicted in the movie, point out the issues confronting media in the Philippine society, determine the similarities and differences of the issues depicted in the movie with the current state of Philippine media and society, analyze the issues reflected in the movie in the context of Philippine media and society, and point out the implications of the movie on the Philippine media and society. Twelve professionals from Iloilo City coming from the academe, television, radio, and print media and the film's director served as respondents of the study. The study used Critical Theories of Communication in analyzing the film in the context of Philippine media and society. Results of the study indicate that Philippine media tends to serve the interest of the dominating class such as advertisers and media owners who exercise power over those below them intheir pursuit of economic interests. Philippine mass media is leaning towards the practice wherein corporate responsibility takes over social responsibility. With competition, the media resorted to sensationalism and exploitation. Moreover, media content is used as a commodity in order to sell. Finally Philippine media serves as a potent force in shaping the way of life of the people. Although such ills in the media occur, this does not generally speak for the entire Philippine mass media. Thus, this study concluded that the film "Bikini Open" partly affirmed the state of Philippine media in reality.

The perceptions and gratifications of Ilonggo Shock Talk-Radio listeners
Abad, Catherine Grace; Francisco, Franz C.; Gador, Fevie Anne (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)
Shock Talk Radio Programs are gaining multitudes of listeners within Iloilo. Mama Monyeka and Talk to Papa ,two of the most popular Shock Talk-Radio programs, are the subject of the research. In this study the researchers assessed the different perceptions and gratification sought and obtained by Ilonggo listeners with different educational orientation; Out-of-School Youth, High school, and College. The researchers used descriptive research design and survey questionnaires to gather information. Result showed the OSY are the ones with the most positive perception towards Shock Talk-radio programs, followed by the High School Group and the and lastly the College group. Also the gratification that is mainly sought is entertainment needs among the three groups. Albeit needs such as information, personal identify and social interaction were also identified as needs that the audience seek to satisfy. For gratifications obtained it was shown that only 5% among the total number of the respondent claimed that needs outside entertainment have been met by these programs. The need which was satisfied the most by these programs again is the entertainment need. Using the Theory of Uses and Gratifications it was found out that the audiences' physical environment (in here educational orientation) affects the perception towards a media content (Shock Talk - radio programs) and influences his/her reasons for consumption (gratification sought). Finally media content such as Shock Talk- radio programs answer the audience' needs.
