Item Ambahan of the Panay Bukidnons: Its nature and socio-cultural significanceCalaor, Debbie Ann C. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)The study seeks to know the nature of the ambahan as an oral literature, its literary elements, and its socio-cultural significance. The results of the study show that the ambahans are narratives in free verse that are chanted spontaneously by the Panay Bukidnons. Their themes, variably deal with nature, work, love, customs and norms. The purposes of the chanting of the ambahans are to entertain, to teach, and to commemorate very significant occasions. According to the culture of the Panay Bukidnons, the practitioners of the ambahan are elderly men. No women are allowed to join in the chanting of the ambahan. Lastly, the ambahans reveal the unique culture, values and beliefs of the Panay Bukidnons of Barangay Masaroy, Calinog, Iloilo.Item Sexual politics in selected Cuyunon folk songsCabrestante, Ma. Anthea A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-12)The purpose of this study is to examine the sexual political condition of Cuyunon women as portrayed in the folk songs of Cuyo, Palawan. As one of the studies that examine Philippine folk literature using a feminist lens, this study seeks to uncover how deeply ingrained the patriarchal norms and values are in the Cuyunon and Palaweño society through a sexual political analysis of the Cuyunon folk songs. The analysis of the texts has two parts: the first part analyzes the binary oppositions of gender roles present in the songs, and the second part analyzes the sexual politics in the songs. After the analysis of the songs, it is found out that most of the songs portray traditional gender roles for men and women, and that the perpetuation of gender roles and stereotypes play a big role in the oppression of women. This study has concluded that according to the Cuyunon folk songs. Cuyunon women are only temporarily empowered during the courtship phase, but they still occupy an inferior position in the sexual politics of their society. Furthermore, this study has also concluded that aside from reflecting the patriarchal culture of the Cuyunon society, the Cuyunon folk songs are tools for the propagation and normalization of patriarchal culture as they are sang and heard again and again.Item Subalternity in the Cebuano poems of Michael Obenieta: A postcolonial approach to the study of the selected Cebuano poems of Michael ObenietaBuac, Abigail C. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-04)This study examines eleven Cebuano poems of Michael "Myke" Obenieta and reviews cultural-historical studies related to the concept of subalternity as an aspect of postcolonialism. The researcher examines the prevalent literary elements in each poem; discusses the subalterns. discourses in them; and ascertain the author's role in the Cebuano literary culture. The prevalent literary element in Myke's poems is imagery. Other literary elements present are similes, metaphors, personifications, and hyperboles which contribute to the effectiveness of imagery. The style of writing employed by the author is adopted from the Western way of writing — the free verse - although he uses the formal Cebuano language in presenting images of Cebuanos and the aspects of their everyday life. These eleven Cebuano poems contain symbols and images of subjugation, absorption, domination, and subordination which characterizes the Cebuanos as subalterns. The author is native of Cebu but he left the country to live in Kansas City for reasons not only for greener pastures but for a place where he could establish himself as a poet in the light of where he came from. Myke, as he explores the Cebuano culture and reflect them in these eleven poems, contribute to the development of the Cebuano literature; a new trend in the study of Cebuano literary culture.Item Fidelity of the film adaptation of the novel "Fifty shades of grey"Billones, Toni Rose D.; Tumbagahan, Angelique S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This undergraduate thesis is a critical analysis of film adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey to find out its fidelity to the novel in terms of character, setting, and plot using the Theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and the interpretation of film adaptations by John Desmond and Peter Hawkes. This study highlights the characteristics of the film as a medium especially when it is adapted from a literary work and selves as a guide for filmmakers in adapting literary works. It recommends that film producers should work with the author to create a more faithful adaptation especially to novel series like Fifty Shades. The analysis uses a codebook designed to allow cues to be counted and tallied to determine the elements carried over in the film adaptation. The researchers conclude that the film Fifty Shades of Grey is an intermediate adaptation of the novel with certain narrative elements specifically the character, setting and plot, undergoing addition or deletion in the adaptation process. The dropping of some characters caused a domino-effect on the other elements such as the setting and plot events. The film adaptation changed the mood of the story, from a very explicit into a more subtle form, by adding scenes that can be categorized as romantic rather than sensualItem Self-disclosure and stages of relationship formation in social networking sites: The case of FacebookArista, Mark Joshua O.; Ricopuerto, Maicah B. (Division of Humanities , College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)This study contributes to literature on computer-mediated communication, particularly online relationship formation. It serves as a source of information for people to know what kind of information they should disclose online, specifically on Facebook, and helps users to analyze and identify differences between their online and offline relationships. This study analyzed how online relationships are formed in Facebook in terms of self-disclosure and how users form relationships through their Facebook accounts. A total of 420 respondents answered the survey questionnaires designed to analyze online self-disclosure among Facebook users and the stages of relational development in Facebook. Results showed that respondents were reluctant to disclose information regarding personal matters, beliefs or religious convictions, relationships, and sex; and were willing to disclose information regarding their interests. Furthermore, it was found that the probability of online relationships like romantic relationships to develop is relatively small while relationships like being friends or acquaintances have the bigger chance to build up. It was also found that if a relationship was developed online, it undergoes certain stages which are similar to the stages of face-to-face relationships. This study concludes that Facebook users do not consider the site as a proper or right medium/channel for self-disclosure, especially of highly private and personal matters, which is the ground for relationships to develop. Meaning, the development of online romantic relationships is not always possible. Basically, interpersonal relationships in Facebook are confined to acquaintanceship which is grounded on common interests. Future researches could also explore other aspects of online relationships like anonymity or look at the role of Facebook in maintaining already existing relationships. An unstructured interview which can gather valuable insights from the respondents is also recommended. Other researchers can also test the quality and longevity of relationships which are initiated in Facebook and brought face-to-face.
