Item Kilig factor: The relationship-oriented themes in a very special love film seriesCalar, Helen Grace A.; Donguines, Khristian Mark (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)The research looks into the success of Filipino romantic comedy blockbuster films from another perspective, which is the kilig factor, by analysing the relationship-oriented themes embedded in the films. Kilig is defined as the flutter of excitement caused by romance while relationship- oriented themes refer to the verbal and non-verbal portrayals of romance by the lead characters. The subject of the research is the romantic comedy blockbuster film series A Very Special Love shown to Filipino audiences in 2008 to 2013. The objectives of the study were analyze the relationship-oriented themes presented in the films and the level of kilig it achieved. This study is grounded on the concepts of Berio’s SMCR Model of Communication by David K. Berlo, specifically giving emphasis on the two factors under Message which are the element and treatment to analyze the content of the film. This study used a descriptive research design and employed content analysis as the method. In order to analyze the content of the film series, the researchers formulated a codebook that was derived from the concept of relationship-oriented themes developed by Johnson and Holmes (2009) and the “Levels of Kilig” by Director Olivia Lamasan of Star Magic. The results of the content analysis shows that there are a total of 231 occurrences of relationship-oriented themes in the three films combined, and the second film You Changed My Life got the highest tally of 96 counts. In terms of relationship-oriented themes, gazing and smiling got the most number of occurrences with 43 instances. In conclusion, the film series A Very Special Love reached the highest level of kilig, Level 3 - kilig na nagpapatili, which theoretically proves that the film series is a successful Filipino romantic comedy blockbuster film.Item Magandang lalake: A relational study on the level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and the male K - drama viewers' concept of masculinity and gender performativityBritanico, Hannah D.; Figuracion, Ejay Christine L.; Gelvosa, Alysha Mae S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)The research looks into the relationship between the male K-Drama viewers' level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and their concept of masculinity and gender performativity, which are both in terms of appearance and demeanor. The flower boy image or the kkonminam represents a soft version of masculinity, which holds the balance of having good looks and proper demeanor, and is often seen portrayed by male K-Drama protagonists. This study is mainly grounded on Gerbner and Gross' Cultivation Theory, which gives emphasis to the media's impact on viewers' attitude and perception based on their amount of exposure. Judith Butler's Gender Performativity then serves as a supporting theory as it gives emphasis to an individual's understanding of gender and how they conduct themselves, as well as the media's role in producing and transmitting ideals of masculinity. This study uses a quantitative research design and uses the correlational method. In the analysis and interpretation of data, Spearman's Rank Correlation is used to answer the study's research problem. The results show that all the variables have a very weak positive relationship. Amongst the variables mentioned, only the level of exposure and gender performativity in terms of demeanor has statistical significance. Overall, the study concludes K-Dramas may have played a role in the respondents' concept of masculinity and gender performativity although there may be external variables involved, and that the media is a gateway for the presentation and recognition of various forms of masculinities.Item Written words: A descriptive study on the uses and gratifications of wattpad writersBernardo, Crystal Liz P.; Castor, Jizette Joy J.; Poly, Rhyene Janne S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This descriptive study is on the uses and gratifications of Filipino romance writers for writing in Wattpad, a free online writing community. The study is best explained by the Uses and Gratifications Theory of Blumler and Katz which states that specific forms of media content are sought out by the audience members based upon their individual need satisfactions. An online survey of 37 Filipino Wattpad romance writers shows the main use for writing in Wattpad is diversion or escape from the daily stress. The strongest gratification satisfied by Wattpad is affective or expression of emotion, pleasure, and aesthetic experiences. The result indicates that gender is a major influential factor in their uses and gratifications gained from writing in Wattpad. Wattpad empowers people who love writing not only because it is a free writing community but more so because it gives writers a sense of freedom from stress and freedom to express themselves.Item Level of intention to use GIS among online journalistsBayog, Katrina Coleen; Buensuceso, Dayanara; Sabando, Fydah Marie (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)Geographical Information System or GIS is a new technology being used by different international news organizations to provide a more comprehensive reporting for their consumers. GIS is a data visualization tool which maps out the news articles linked to where they have happened, providing a more sophisticated visual output. However, despite the potential of GIS in journalism and reporting, there has been a limited use of this system in local and national news reporting, both online and on print in the Philippines. This study looks into the level of intention to use GIS by local online newspaper journalists in online news reporting. Using a framework derived from the Technology Acceptance Model and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, the researchers employ a non-experimental relational study design to determine which is the strongest predictor for intention to use GIS among the three constructs of UTAUT model—Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy and Social Influence. Their findings show that PPI-member journalists in Western Visayas had a high intention to use GIS in their online news reporting. The researchers recommend, for future study, the employment of the “actual use” construct of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and/or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). They also encourage an experimental design with the controlled and uncontrolled variables in conducting the test. This can give an accurate comparative depiction of journalists who were exposed to the explainer video from those who were not exposed.
