The uses and gratifications of reading fan fiction among Ilongga teens
Buenaflor, Daphne Claire; Haro, Samantha Gabrielle; Rojas, Jerlyn Joy (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-05)
Fan fiction has become quite the internet trend especially among female teens that the researchers sought to find out why readers read fan fiction and what underlying needs of the readers are gratified by fan fiction. Fan fiction is all about fictional stories written by fans on real celebrities that are either published or posted online. The study is based on Katz and Blumler’s Uses and Gratifications theory, which explains the uses and functions of the media for individuals, be it of groups, and society in general. It is a survey done on to 350 female students at the Iloilo National High School (INHS) using descriptive statistics as its method of analysis. Findings reveal that Wattpad is the most used platform in accessing fan fiction and the most read stories are under Romance. The results also show the primary use for the respondents as to why they read fan fiction is stimulation or to develop their creativity and spark their imagination. Moreover, the gratifications acquired by the readers, which are cognitive or acquiring knowledge, information, and comprehensions are parallel to why they read fan fiction in the first place. The lowest rated use is socialization and the lowest rated gratification is social integrative which are also parallel to each other Reading fan fiction for the respondents, allows them to be more motivated and to be more inventive. Although, fan fiction does not necessarily help in improving the social lives of the readers.

Magandang lalake: A relational study on the level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and the male K - drama viewers' concept of masculinity and gender performativity
Britanico, Hannah D.; Figuracion, Ejay Christine L.; Gelvosa, Alysha Mae S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)
The research looks into the relationship between the male K-Drama viewers' level of exposure to the Korean flower boy image and their concept of masculinity and gender performativity, which are both in terms of appearance and demeanor. The flower boy image or the kkonminam represents a soft version of masculinity, which holds the balance of having good looks and proper demeanor, and is often seen portrayed by male K-Drama protagonists. This study is mainly grounded on Gerbner and Gross' Cultivation Theory, which gives emphasis to the media's impact on viewers' attitude and perception based on their amount of exposure. Judith Butler's Gender Performativity then serves as a supporting theory as it gives emphasis to an individual's understanding of gender and how they conduct themselves, as well as the media's role in producing and transmitting ideals of masculinity. This study uses a quantitative research design and uses the correlational method. In the analysis and interpretation of data, Spearman's Rank Correlation is used to answer the study's research problem. The results show that all the variables have a very weak positive relationship. Amongst the variables mentioned, only the level of exposure and gender performativity in terms of demeanor has statistical significance. Overall, the study concludes K-Dramas may have played a role in the respondents' concept of masculinity and gender performativity although there may be external variables involved, and that the media is a gateway for the presentation and recognition of various forms of masculinities.

The picture-superiority effect in candy magazine advertisements based on consumers' level of brand recall
Bomediano, Maria Myka R.; Leyva, Rachell Janine B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)
The picture-superiority effect in candy magazine advertisements based on consumers’ level of brand recall is a study aimed towards helping advertisers formulate effective strategies in magazine advertising and provide insight for fellow researchers on the picture-superiority effect and its relative effects on consumer behavior. In this study, the researchers focused primarily on proving the prevalence of the picture-superiority effect in Candy magazine advertisements. They surveyed 65 female freshmen in UPV-Miagao, each of whom were given a copy of the April 2010 issue of Candy magazine one day prior to the survey. Data gathered were analyzed through frequency count and content analysis of the top three most recalled advertisements and three unrecalled advertisements based on pictorial and verbal elements and the sizes of both. Results showed that the picture-superiority effect is indeed prevalent but discovered that it is not exclusive to brand recall and may also be affected by brand familiarity or past purchase decisions. The latter are then recommended by the researchers as basis for further research.

Fidelity of the film adaptation of the novel "Fifty shades of grey"
Billones, Toni Rose D.; Tumbagahan, Angelique S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
This undergraduate thesis is a critical analysis of film adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey to find out its fidelity to the novel in terms of character, setting, and plot using the Theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and the interpretation of film adaptations by John Desmond and Peter Hawkes. This study highlights the characteristics of the film as a medium especially when it is adapted from a literary work and selves as a guide for filmmakers in adapting literary works. It recommends that film producers should work with the author to create a more faithful adaptation especially to novel series like Fifty Shades. The analysis uses a codebook designed to allow cues to be counted and tallied to determine the elements carried over in the film adaptation. The researchers conclude that the film Fifty Shades of Grey is an intermediate adaptation of the novel with certain narrative elements specifically the character, setting and plot, undergoing addition or deletion in the adaptation process. The dropping of some characters caused a domino-effect on the other elements such as the setting and plot events. The film adaptation changed the mood of the story, from a very explicit into a more subtle form, by adding scenes that can be categorized as romantic rather than sensual

Written words: A descriptive study on the uses and gratifications of wattpad writers
Bernardo, Crystal Liz P.; Castor, Jizette Joy J.; Poly, Rhyene Janne S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
This descriptive study is on the uses and gratifications of Filipino romance writers for writing in Wattpad, a free online writing community. The study is best explained by the Uses and Gratifications Theory of Blumler and Katz which states that specific forms of media content are sought out by the audience members based upon their individual need satisfactions. An online survey of 37 Filipino Wattpad romance writers shows the main use for writing in Wattpad is diversion or escape from the daily stress. The strongest gratification satisfied by Wattpad is affective or expression of emotion, pleasure, and aesthetic experiences. The result indicates that gender is a major influential factor in their uses and gratifications gained from writing in Wattpad. Wattpad empowers people who love writing not only because it is a free writing community but more so because it gives writers a sense of freedom from stress and freedom to express themselves.

Level of intention to use GIS among online journalists
Bayog, Katrina Coleen; Buensuceso, Dayanara; Sabando, Fydah Marie (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)
Geographical Information System or GIS is a new technology being used by different international news organizations to provide a more comprehensive reporting for their consumers. GIS is a data visualization tool which maps out the news articles linked to where they have happened, providing a more sophisticated visual output. However, despite the potential of GIS in journalism and reporting, there has been a limited use of this system in local and national news reporting, both online and on print in the Philippines. This study looks into the level of intention to use GIS by local online newspaper journalists in online news reporting. Using a framework derived from the Technology Acceptance Model and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, the researchers employ a non-experimental relational study design to determine which is the strongest predictor for intention to use GIS among the three constructs of UTAUT model—Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy and Social Influence. Their findings show that PPI-member journalists in Western Visayas had a high intention to use GIS in their online news reporting. The researchers recommend, for future study, the employment of the “actual use” construct of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and/or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). They also encourage an experimental design with the controlled and uncontrolled variables in conducting the test. This can give an accurate comparative depiction of journalists who were exposed to the explainer video from those who were not exposed.

Study and stream: University students' behavior on online academic learning and their motivations for binge-watching on Netflix
Banting, Ericka Marie; Bitoca, Joyce Anne Marie; Buergo, Angelika (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)
The Covid 19 pandemic brought Netflix to unprecedented heights, especially among people aged 18 to 24. The remote setup of learning enabled students to multi-task between their schoolwork and non-academic activities. In particular, this study looks into the phenomenon of binge-watching among communication students from a selected university who are direct subscribers of Netflix. Using the framework designed by Panda and Pandey (2017) on the motivations and outcomes of binge-watching among college students, this research investigates if there is a relationship between the university students' behaviors on online academic learning and the factors that motivate them to binge-watch TV shows/series on Netflix. The research design is quantitative in nature and data analysis utilizes the Pearson's R correlation. Findings show a moderately small, positive correlation between the university students' behavior towards online academic learning and their motivations to binge-watch TV shows/series on Netflix. This means that progress in the student's behavior on online academic learning signifies an increase in their motivations for binge-watching.

A comparison of spelling in texting and formal writing
Barrientos, Shiela Rose Z.; Vencer, Ruby Jean A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)
This study, entitled A Comparison of Spelling in Texting and Formal Writing, shows the similarities and differences in spelling by high school students on mobile communication and in formal writing. It also provides educators basic information on whether or not they should worry over the spelling skills of students. And it will somehow shed light on the ongoing debate as to the perceived influence of text messaging on the writing skills of students. The respondents of the study were fourth-year students of Palaca-Damilisan National High School. Using essays and text messages written and composed by the high school students, the researchers aimed to describe how high school students construct messages using cellular phone, find out their commonly misspelled words in English language based on the set of words provided by the researchers, and finally to compare the way high school students spell words in text messaging and formal writing. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior of Ajzen (2006) that shows how a person’s beliefs, the social pressure to conform to the wishes of others, and perceived ability to carry out the action can affect his behavior such as spelling words in text messaging and formal writing. After the necessary data were gathered, the researchers found that majority of the respondents scored low in spelling in text messaging and scored average in the formal writing. Twenty or 48% has a low score both in text messaging and formal writing. Only two respondents got an average score both in text messaging and formal writing, while only one rated high in formal writing but scored low in text messaging. The researchers found out that in text messaging, five of the 15 words in the list were consistently misspelled while in formal writing, the respondents spelled properly all the words except for one, which is irresistible. In addition, respondents used contractions, numbers and symbols as substitute for letters and omitted some vowels in text messaging, while in formal writing the respondents do not substitute letters with numbers. The researchers recommend to conduct more studies on the perceived influence of technological advancement such as cellular phone on the word construction in formal writing, improve the questionnaire so as to satisfy other elements stated in the Theory of Planned Behavior, formulate survey questions that will measure the respondents’ English language skills, conduct a study that would compare the spelling skills of cellular phone and non-cellular phone users, and conduct the study on a group of respondents who are cellular phone users and have a high competence in the English language.

Selfies: Managing identities on Facebook among UPV students
Asturias, JLee Mei G.; Torres, Agape May T. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
This study is a descriptive research on the filters commonly used in self-presentation on Facebook among college students. It describes the level of self-presentation and identifies the factors that influence self-presentation through selfies. The data comes from 310 undergraduate students of the University of the Philippines Visayas College of Arts and Sciences in school year 2015-2016, selected through purposive sampling and with the use of a standardized questionnaire distributed through snowball technique. Data analysis makes use of descriptive statistics such as measures of central tendency using frequency, percentage distribution and rank. The researchers conclude that there is an existing pattern on how respondents filter their selfies on Facebook. These filters are in terms of size, focus, angle, location, and occasion. The data also shows the manifestation of culture and relationships in posting selfies on Facebook. This research supports the theory Identity Management which suggests that identities are managed by individuals at different junctures of their culture and relationships. This study also concludes that UPV CAS students use selfies as a means of self-presentation and that the respondents agree towards positive self-presentation on Facebook.

Consciousness of feminism in selected movies among college students
Artuz, Shara Mae F.; Reyes, Rika Jane T.; Villa, Mae Anne F. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)
The study seeks to know the common level of consciousness of feminism in selected films among college students. It anchors on Muzafer Sherifs Social Judgment Theory that sets responses to stimuli along the latitudes of acceptance, non-commitment and rejection. Parallel to this theory, consciousness of feminism is measured as high level, which means the audiences accept and identify the concept of feminism being present in the films included in this study; medium level, which means the audiences find the concept of feminism objectionable in the films included in this study; and low level, which represents that audience does not accept and identify the concept of feminism being present in the films included in this study. The study employs a survey questionnaire given to 353 students of the University of the Philippines Visayas. Results show that over 73% of the respondents have high consciousness level. It is concluded in this study that majority of the students in UP Visayas are highly conscious of feminism in feminist-themed films; are conscious of the concept of feminism or can easily identify it in feminist-themed movies.
