    Community structure, biomass productivity and carbon stock assessment of mangroves in Barangay Tabon, Batan Bay, Aklan

    The study aimed to assess the community structure, biomass productivity, and carbon stock assessment of mangroves in Barangay Tabon, Batan Bay, Aklan using the plot method. Specifically, it aimed to: 1. determine selected physical and chemical factors such as water salinity, water pH, soil temperature and characterization of soil substrates, 2. identify true mangrove species present in the area, 3. describe the community structure in terms of Stand Basal Area, Stems per Hectare, Relative Density, Relative Frequency, Relative Dominance, Importance Value, Shannon-Index of Diversity, Zonation Pattern, Seedling and Sapling Density, 4. assess the biomass productivity (both wood biomass, and litter fall), 5. estimate the amount of carbon stored in the mangrove forest (using allometric equation). A total of twenty-one true mangrove species belonging to 12 families were identified. Family Rhizophoraceae was the most represented with five species namely Bruguiera cylindrica, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, and R. stylosa. The rest were also well represented namely Family Avicenniaceae- Avicennia alba, A. officinalis, A. marina, and A. rumphiana; Family Combretaceae- Lumnitzera littorea and Limnutzera racemosa; Family Sonneratiaceae- Sonneratia alba, and Sonneratia caseolaris; Family Acanthaceae- Acanthus ebracteatus; Family Bombacaceae- Camptostemon philippinensis; Family Euphorbiaceae- Excoecaria agallocha; Family Meliaceae- Xylocarpus moluccensis; Family Myrsinaceae- Aegiceras corniculatum; Family Myrtaceae- Osbornia octodonta; Family Arecaceae- Nypa fruticans; Family Rubiaceae- Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea. Basal area ranged from 0.11m2/ha for Ceriops decandra to 68.78m2/ha for Sonneratia alba. Avicennia marina had the highest stems per hectare with 22,600 stems/ha, while Bruguiera cylindrica had the lowest with 100 stems/ha. Avicennia marina occurred in all plots with 137 trees/ha and had the highest relative density of 38.38% and relative frequency of 38.42%. Sonneratia alba had the highest relative dominance of 48.49% while the lowest was Ceriops decandra with 0.08%. Avicennia alba, Bruguiera cylindrica, and Ceriops decandra had the lowest relative densities and frequencies at 0.3%. The most important species was Avicennia marina (107.6) and the least important species was Ceriops decandra (0.68). The area was considered to be diverse at 0.7206. On per transect basis, the highest index of diversity recorded was in Transect 2, while the lowest was in Transect 1. Avicennia and Sonneratia species occured both in the low intertidal zone (seaward) and mid-intertidal zone (transitional zone). Rhizophora, Nypa, Camptostemon, Osbornia, Lumnitzera, Bruguiera, Ceriops, Exoecaria, and Aegiceras were found in the mid-intertidal zone (transitional zone). Xylocarpus, Scyphiphora, and Acanthus occurred in high intertidal zone (landward). Avicennia rumphiana had the highest seedlings density of 1001 seedlings/ha, whereas Rhizophora mucronata had the highest saplings density of 96 saplings/ha. The lowest seedling and sapling density was Rhizophora apiculata (Iseedling/ha) and Camptostemon philippinensis (lsapling/ha) respectively. The species with the highest computed biomass of 1,287.78 tons/ha and carbon stock of 579.5 tons/ha was Sonneratia alba. The lowest was Ceriops decandra with biomass of 0.06 tons/ha and carbon stock of 0.03 tons/ha. A total of 2,080 tons/ha biomass and 936.34 tons/ha carbon stock was determined. Based on the litter fall, Transect 2 has the highest leaf fall weighing 580.4g. Litter weight was highest in January 2013 and lowest in December 2012 in all sampling sites.

    Interest group politics behind the proposed construction of the coal-fired power plant in Banate, Iloilo

    This study looked into the political dynamics of interest groups behind the proposed construction of the coal-fired power plant in Banate, Iloilo. Specifically, the study looked into how the interest groups define and value the environment, the strategies employed by the interest groups in their campaign, the resources utilized by the interest groups, how the interest groups behave within the alliance and the advocacy results of their campaign. The groups viewed the environment to be the surroundings that include biophysical, biological and other elements. The groups value the environment because of the benefits they can derive from it. The groups had given the same value and respect to the environment before and after the campaign. The strategics employed by the interest groups in articulating their interests with regard to the issue were community organizing, information and education campaign, mass mobilizations, networking and linkaging, tasking, research and analysis, and lobbying. The strategies that the groups employed were also reflective to what were suggested in the literatures. On the building of alliance, qith other interest groups, it is reflective of the trend among interest groups today-that is to build alliance in order to strengthen the campaign in pursuing their respective interests. The resources utilized in the duration of the campaign depended on what was available and demanded by the time. Mobilizable resources came from three major sources: the beneficiary constituency, conscience constituency, and the non-constituency institutions. The resources that were utilized by the interest groups in the campaign were material resources such as human resources, financial resources, information and institutions, and the non-malerial resources such as time, connections, experiences, influence, credibility and authority, and prayers. Interest groups within the alliance had varying levels of participation in the duration of the campaign. Aside from the strategies and resources employed by the interest groups in the campaign, the political environment also played major role in the results of the campaign. The interest groups viewed the up-coming 2004 elections as a big factor that influenced the results of the campaign.

    Fecundity and Oocyte size in the flyingfish (Cheilopogon arcticeps) from Lanuza Bay, Surigao Del Sur

    The relationship of fecundity and oocyte diameter to body size and other reproductive aspects of the flying fish, Cheilopogon arcticeps in Lanuza Bay were investigated in this study. Gravimetric method or weight method was used in order to estimate the fecundity of 35 mature female C.arcticeps ranging from 17.8-23.6 cm standard length. Total fecundity of C.arcticeps ranged from 1,126 - 41,684 while its oocyte diameter ranged from 0.8 -3.6 mm. The relationship of fecundity to standard length (SL) showed variable results and poor correlation. This may be indicative of a unique reproductive strategy of this species. Egg size to standard length showed an increasing trend but a weak correlation. In general smaller egg diameters were observed in smaller size class SL and bigger egg diameters appear in larger SL. The relationship of fecundity to gonad weight showed a positive linear correlation and increasing data .Thus as gonad weight increases, fecundity increases too. The correlation between fecundity and total length shows a weak relationship, however the correlation between fecundity and gonad weight show a stronger relationship. The present study aim to exhibit additional information on the rare documentation of flyingfish in the country.

    Occupational exposure to emissions of photocopying machines in Iloilo City: An exploratory study

    Photocopying is a profitable business in Iloilo City. The photocopying machines are known to emit ozone and volatile organic compounds. This study aims to determine whether long-term exposure to photocopying machines will have adverse health effects on the operators. The group extracted blood samples from the respondents; had them undergo chest x-ray examination; answer questionnaires and checklists. From the blood samples, the group determined the WBC count, differential count and serum albumin, total protein and uric acid of the respondents. From the chest x-ray examination, the group aimed to see particles from photocopier emissions deposited in the lungs. From questionnaires, the group aimed to determine the operators’ common health complaints. From the checklists, the group aimed to know if the photocopying establishments have a suitable working space area and ventilation. The group aimed to determine the effect of years and hours of exposure to photocopiers; number of machines; ventilation; working space area; kind and number of toner on WBC count and differential count; health complaints; serum albumin, total protein and uric acid levels; and chest x-ray results of the respondents. Results showed that years and hours of exposure had no significant effect on the photocopier operators. However, other factors such as the number of machines, working space area and ventilation, number and kind of toner had significant effects on selected cell and serum levels in the blood of the operators and on their common health complaints. The group concludes that exposure to photocopying machines have significant effects on the health status of the photocopier operators based on the common health complaints they frequently experience, white blood cell count and differential count and blood serum levels.

    The effect of seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) as a partial substitute for commercial feed on the growth of chicken

    The study determined whether the use of seaweed (Kappaphycus aIvarezii) in different amounts as a partial substitute to commercial feeds would enhance the growth of chickens, reduce feed consumption, increase feed efficiency, and increase profit. The chickens were first fed with commercial broiler starter mash feeds for 15 days. Then, on the 16th day to the 35th day, the chickens were fed with different combinations in 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 ratios of commercial broiler finisher feeds to K. alvarezii. Chickens fed with purely commercial broiler finisher feeds served as the control. Feed consumption, liveweight gain, and feed efficiency were computed every three days, while Profitability was determined at the end of the experimental period. Results showed that the use of K. alvarezii as a partial substitute to commercial broiler finisher feeds in a 1: 1 ratio increased the profit as well as the growth of the chickens, and it is comparable to that in the control (fed with purely commercial broiler finisher feeds). When the amount of K. alvarezii in the feed ration is more than 50% (1:1 ratio), it was observed that it would hamper the growth of the broilers.

    Optimization of parameters for the Fe-humic acid complex formation using cyclic voltammetry

    Humic acid extracted from an artesian well located at Sta. Barbara, Iloilo was used to generate an Fe-HA complex as a potential additive to bio floc systems to augment the essential mineral Fe. The humic acid obtained was black in color and had a powdery texture after oven-drying. The Fe-HA complex were prepared using Fe3+ ions at different pH values specifically at pH 8, 9 and 10. Formation of the complex was investigated using the cyclic voltammetry to determine the ideal conditions to maximize the binding of the metal ion. The results showed that there are two oxidation and reduction cycles which suggests that there are two species undergoing oxidation and reduction. It is possible that the free iron and the Fe in the complex are undergoing a redox cycle although the quinone group in the humic acid can also act as a redox center. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy can help corroborate the amount of complex formed to help deduce the redox active center.

    Phytochemical screening, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of the crude ethanolic extract of calamansi (Citrus microcarpa) peels

    Citrus fruits are well-known sources of vitamin C, and like most other whole foods, they also contain an impressive list of other essential nutrients and high amounts of phytochemicals. Calamansi, scientifically known as Citrus microcarpa, is a native citrus plant cultivated throughout the Philippines. Calamansi is chiefly utilized for its pulp and juice but the peels and pressed pulp, covering each individual segment of the edible portion and seeds are considered as wastes and thrown away. To further utilize the rind or peels, this study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the crude ethanolic extract of C. microcarpa peels. Presence of select phytochemicals was also tested. The antioxidant and antibacterial activities were investigated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay and Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion susceptibility method, respectively. Results of the phytochemical screening have confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, steroids and saponins in the extract. Crude ethanolic extract of C. microcarpa peels also showed activity against DPPH radicals with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 14.46 pL/mL, a much higher IC50 value compared to the positive control, ascorbic acid, with 8.36 pL/mL. The antibacterial activity assay of the extract showed minimal inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus.

    Gonadal maturation Stages of Pinkfingered Vinegar Crab Episesarma chengtongense (Serene and Soh 1967) from Capiz, Philippines

    The pink-fingered vinegar crab Episesarma chengtongense is a growing fishery resource in the mangrove areas of the Philippines and may have potential for aquaculture and stock enhancement. To determine the gonadal maturation stages for both male and female for this species, a study was conducted from February to May 2015 of the pink-fingered crab from Capiz, Philippines. The determination of the gonadal maturation stages was based on the gross morphology and histological characteristics of the male and female gonads. In both sexes, gonad activity occurred throughout the study duration but for females, the peak egg bearing month was in May (87%). Body sizes of ovierous females were from 31.9 - 42.3 mm (CW). The greatest prevalence of ovigerous females was in the size range of 35-39 mm CW; the lowest percentage at 40-44 mm CW. Male crabs with mature testes were consistently high (70- 100%) in the four months duration of the study. The smallest female carrying eggs was 31.9 mm CW. Four stages of ovarian maturation were identified namely: developing (Stage II) with a yellow colored gonad, ripe (Stage III) with orange colored gonad, mature (Stage IV) with brown colored gonad and spent (Stage V) with light brown colored gonad. Two stages of male gondal maturation were identified namely immature (Stage I) with translucent to off white testes and mature.(Stage II) with creamy white testes.

    Decomposition of sugarcane bagasse by Trichoderma

    Sugarcane bagasse, an end-product after extraction of the juice of the sugarcane, was composted with the aid of Trichoderma, a compost fungus activator which shortens the decomposition process of farm wastes. Decomposition process was observed through the changes in temperature and substrate consistency. An average of 94 days was noted for a complete decomposition of 900 kg bagasse. Analysis of bagasse compost gave 0.78% nitrogen, 4.94% phosphorus, in the form of P2O5 and 1.55% potassium, in the form of K 2O. It showed that composted bagasse is a good source of phosporus but poor in nitrogen and potassium. The compost, nevertheless, can also be a good soil conditioner.

    Historical analysis of Hippeatrum puniceum (Var) Lam.

    A histochemical study Hipppeastrum puniceum, a bulbous plant of Family Amaryllidaceae, was performed to screen the plant for the presence of medically important substances that could be responsible for its curative powers. Results of the analyses showed that the leaf reacted positively to tests for presence of aldehydes, alkaloids, amygdalin, and arbutin; the roots tested positive for aldehydes, alkaloids, amygdalin, lecithin, oxalic acid, saponins, and tartaric acid. The bulb had aldehydes, alkaloids, amygdalin, arbutin, lecithin, saponins and tannins. On the other hand, the leaf, root, and bulb yielded negative results in the tests for presence of presence of citric acid, formic acid, lignin, and phytosterol.
