Item Living above and belowground biomass and carbon stock assessment of station 1, Taklong Island, Taklong Island National Marine Reserve, Guimaras, PhilippinesAlegado, Alexis Jude T. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-06)The Taklong National Marine Reserve is one of the marine protected sites in the country with a good cover of mangroves. This study assessed the species composition, diversity, aboveground biomass and the estimated carbon of the natural mangrove forest found in Taklong Island Station 1. Barangay Lapaz. Nueva Valencia. Guimaras. The study aimed to: a.) map out the area of the selected mangrove patches, b.) identify the species composition and diversity of the sampling site, c.) quantify the aboveground and belowground biomass, carbon stock of live vegetations, and d.) to convert the carbon stock to carbon dioxide equivalence (CO₂e) of the selected station. This study is only limited to the estimation of living aboveground, belowground and the carbon stock using the published allometric equations. Only 7 species of mangroves were found in the site belonging to 3 families. The mean stand basal area was 21.47 m2 ha-1. The species diversity is low at 0.23 due to low speciation of species of mangroves on the site. The total aboveground biomass was 506.89 Mg ha-1 and carbon dioxide emission potential (CO₂e) of 2,498.15Mg CO₂e. This shows that mangrove in Station 1 of Taklong Island has stored a considerable amount of carbon overtime. Hence, there must be a proper management and protection of this ecosystem.Item Utilization of cow manure in microbial fuel cellsAlcanzo, Jan Hilary A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-04)Resource recycling and the proper treatment of animal waste to reduce its environmental impact are currently important issues for the livestock industry. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) offers the possibility of harvesting electricity from fuel sources that are generally microbially degradable organic matter. The generation of electricity from cow manure in different treatments was investigated. A two-chambered MFC was constructed from accessible and inexpensive materials. Data were recorded and collected every day for 35 days. The MFC with the 20% cow manure with rice stalk yielded the highest power output of 32.028 mW/m³ and the highest current density of 69.022 mA/cm2. The addition of another substrate, and therefore, another fuel source for the bacteria, added to the electricity produced by the cow manure alone. Results of the study show that it is possible to use MFCs to generate electricity from cow manure. Further studies are needed to realize the full potential of cow manure as a fuel source for MFCs as well as to lessen its contribution to the wastes in the environment.Item Community structure, biomass production and carbon stock assessment of mangroves in Barangay Ambolong, Batan, AklanAgregado, Leizel B. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)Mangroves are evergreen shrubs and trees of several unrelated families that thrive within intertidal zones of sheltered flats, coves, bays, and estuarine regions extending inland along streams and river where water is primarily brackish. Continued threats to their existence call for their protection and conservation. This study was conducted to assess the community structure of mangroves in Brgy. Ambolong, Batan, Aklan by 1). measuring physico-chemical parameters (salinity, temperature, pH) 2). describing the community structure in terms of and in terms of a) basal area, b) stems per hectare, c) relative density, d) relative frequency, e) relative dominance, f) importance value, g) Index of Diversity, h) seedling and sapling density, and i) zonation pattern; 3). to assess the bidmass production and carbon stock. This study was done to provide preliminary information regarding the current status of mangroves in the area. Three (3) transect lines, each containing three (3) plots, were established in the area. Twenty (20) mangrove species belonging to eleven (11) families were identified: Acanthaceae - Acanthus ebreatus, Acanthus volubilis; Arecaceae - Nypa fruticans; Avicenniaceae - Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia rumphiana; Bombaceae — Camptostemon philippinensis; Euphorbiaceae - Excoecaria agallocha; Meliaceae — Xylocarpus grioanatum, Xylocarpus moluccensis; Myrsinaceae — Aegiceras corniculatum; Myrtaceae - Osbornia octodonta; Rhizophoraceae - Bruguiera cylindrica, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa; Rubiaceae - Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea; Sonneratiaceae - Sonneratia alba. Water salinity in the study area ranged from 27-30 ppt; soil temperature ranged from 28°C to 30°C. Avicennia marina had the highest values for basal area (4.22 m2/ha), stems per hectare (15,700 stems per hectare), relative density (63.56), relative frequency (63.56%), relative dominance (48.10%), and was the most important species with the importance value of 175. Rhizophora stylosa had the lowest values for basal area (0.002 m2/ha), stems per hectare (100 stems/ha), relative density (0.40 trees/ha), relative frequency (0.4%), relative dominance (0.23%), and was the least important species, having the importance value of 0.832. Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia officinalis, together with Rhizophora stylosa, had the lowest value for stems per hectare (100 stems/ha), relative density (0.40 trees/ha), and relative frequency (0.4%). Seedling density was highest for Avicennia alba(187 seedlings/ha) and lowest for Bruguiera cylindrica (1 seedling/ha). Sapling density was highest for Avicennia marina (54 saplings/ha) and lowest for Excoecaria agallocha (1 sapling/ha). The Index of Diversity was H=0.598. The highest recorded litter was 336.6 g in December 19, 2012-January 2, 2013 while the lowest was recorded at 18.2 grams in December 5-December 29, 2012. Highest biomass production was that of Avicennia marina (962.94 tons/ha), while the lowest was Avicennia officinalis (0.009 tons/ha). Avicennia marina had the highest carbon stock value of 433.32 tons/ha; the lowest was that of Avicennia officinalis (0.004 tons/ha).Item Corporate social responsibility in the energy sector: The role of stakeholders and Korea Electric Power Corporation-Salcon Power Corporation (KSPC) in the Visayas base-load power development project in Brgy. Colon, Naga City, CebuAgero, Nikki Rose L. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This research study examines the roles and strategies utilized by the different stakeholders (i.e. Asian Development Bank, DOE, DENR-7, Municipal Government of Naga City, Cebu and Civil Society Organizations) in promoting corporate social responsibility in the Visayas Base-Load Power Development Project owned by KSPC in Brgy. Colon, Naga City, Cebu from 2003 to the present. The paper also identifies and analyzes the interrelationships between the various actors/stakeholders. In the study, the resource relationship employed by ADB, DOE and DENR-7 towards KSPC was of high interdependence. The use of direct usage strategies was employed by stipulating terms and conditions to influence the KSPC’s observance of corporate social responsibility in the coal-fired power plant. The relationship between the Municipality of Naga City, Cebu and KSPC exhibited firm power for the project was approved and endorsed by the national government under a Built-Own-Operate scheme. It is favorable to use indirect usage strategies such as sending letters/complaints to the responsible individuals in order to exert pressures/demands to the company. Between the civil society organizations and KSPC, the resource relationship was marked by firm power and low interdependence. The civil society organizations utilized indirect withholding/usage strategies (i.e. working through linkages) that were capable of controlling resources to obtain the response from KSPC. Resources (i.e. financial and social) and resource relationships affect the interrelationships between the actors of the project towards the observance of corporate social responsibility for these serve as mechanisms for leverage over the company.Item Cost analysis of coral gardening in Bato Bukay MPA, Guimbal, IloiloAcob, Philina Riva L.; Rojas, Jan Katherine C. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-06)This study analyzes the costs of coral gardening in Bato Bukay MPA in Guimbal. Iloilo. Cognizant of the degradation of their coastal areas and fisheries, the community of Bgy Nalundan, where the marine protected area is located, sought to find solution through marine conservation and coral gardening. Being the habitat and breeding grounds of fishes, coral reefs are one of the most important natural resources that people must protect. Hence, several projects were implemented to propagate the establishment of Marine Protected Areas such as the deployment of artificial reefs and coral gardening activities. Costs of coral gardening in the site were estimated using key informant interviews with individuals who were involved with or who were knowledgeable on the establishment and maintenance of the project, and from secondary sources, thereby enabling the computation of the total costs. A survey of randomly selected participants that included Contingent Valuation Method was conducted in barangays Nalundan, Calampitao and Cabubugan, to determine the socio-economic profile and estimate the local community support through their willingness-to-pay and willingness to support in kind. Proportional sampling formula, adjusted to small population was used to determine the number of these participants across the barangays. The total cost for coral gardening on its first year was estimated as Php 336.684 combining all the fixed, variable and opportunity costs incurred. Out of the total costs, 40% amounted as fixed costs, while 33% were variable costs, and 27% constituted opportunity costs. More people were willing to pay in-kind by volunteering than to pay in monetary terms for the project’s fund for sustainability.Item Partial purification of pH indicator extracted from Rhoeo spathaceaApa, Junna T. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-04)pH test papers are still utilized nowadays despite the prevalence of pH meters, because it is more convenient to use in measuring the pH of a certain substance. The use of natural dye as a pH indicator can serve as a good substitute for an expensive commercial dye that most high schools cannot afford. The pH test papers were prepared by impregnation of 0.03% pure dye extracted from Rhoeo spathacea. TLC was performed to partially remove other plant dye components from the pH active ingredient. The color transition chart was then created at pH ranging from 1.0-13.0 at one unit interval using phosphate buffer. The color transition chart of pure dye extract was compared to the color transition chart of crude dye extract at different pH. Paper impregnated with 0.03% partially purified indicator dye extracted from Rhoeo spathacea showed color transitions from pink to red violet at pH 1.0-3.0; red violet to lavender at pH 3.0-4.0; lavender to blue at pH 4.0-7.0; blue to blue green at pH 7.0-8.0; blue green to green at pH 8.0-11.0; green to yellow green at pH 11.0-12.0; and yellow green to yellow at pH 12.0-13.0. Results also showed that the purified dye extract is a better pH indicator in comparison with the crude dye extract. Spectrophotometric determination of pKa of the indicator was unsuccessful due to the strong overlapping of the UV-Vis spectrum of the acidic and basic forms of the plant dye extract. Titration results showed that the plant indicator can serve as a substitute for the methyl red and phenolphthalein indicators for strong acid-strong base and weak acid-strong base titration, but not for weak acid-weak base titration.Item Analysis of the lipid content of micro algae species used in Philippine aquaculture for their potential in biodiesel productionFerriols, Victor Marco Emmanuel N. (Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)This study looked into the proximate lipid content of four micro algal species (Chaetoceros calcitrans, Tetraselmis tetrahele, Nannochloropsis sp., and Chlorella sp) and one macrophyte (Chaetomorpha sp.) commonly used in Philippine aquaculture. Prior to the proximate analysis using the method described by Bligh and Dyer (1959), the four micro algal species were cultured for five days in 1 L vessels fertilized with TMRL enrichment media. Proximate gravimetric analysis showed that the average lipid content of Tetraselmis tetrahele at 24.11% was significantly higher (p < 0.01) when compared to all the algal species tested. Comparing the mean lipid content of all micro algal species against that of the macrophyte also revealed a significantly higher (p < 0.01) lipid content at 17.40%. Growth rates for all the micro algal species over the culture period was also measured, with the highest growth rate exhibited by T. tetrahele at 1.15 divisions per day. Projected estimates for micro algal production yields of oil from a 1-hectare pond at 0.5 m depth were also calculated from the lipid analysis data, a showing that the highest yield of oil (7.29 tons) can be attained by culturing T. tetrahele. This number was higher than estimated reports for oil production from an area of 1 hectare dedicated to either jatropha (1.7 tons) or coconuts (5.0 tons). This makes the culture of micro algal species a potential option for producing feedstock for biodiesel production.
