    Species composition, distribution and abundance of trees on a 4-hectare site adjacent to the football field Area of UPV Miag-ao, Iloilo

    A four-hectare plot adjacent to the Football Field of UPV Miagao was chosen as the study area. The local name and scientific name of each tree in the plot were identified. GBH and height of trees were noted. Basal Area, Index of Dominance, Index of Diversity and Frequency were also noted. In addition, the distribution of trees in relation with soil and air temperature and relative humidity were also noted. Eight hundred fifty-eight trees were identified inside the 4 hectare plot. The trees were identified excluding seedlings of these trees. Twenty species of trees were identified in the sampling site. The top 5 most numerous species are Acacia, “Aratiles", “Mangga", “Kawayan” and “Gmelina”. The computed value of Index of Dominance is higher compared to the Index of Diversity, indicating that the area is not diverse and that certain species dominates the area. The distribution of trees is affected by the temperature ranging from 19.2 C to 39C.

    Integrating indigenous people's rights and development -oriented goals and interests in DRRM-CCA program: a case study of the Aeta community in Brgy.Mabuyong , Anini-y , Antique

    This study is about indigenous people's (IPs) rights and development-oriented goals. Specifically, it tackles on how their rights and goals are incorporated into Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Climate Change Adaptation (DRRM-CCA) plans and programs. The researchers chose the Aeta community of Barangay Mabuyong, Anini- y, Antique as research participants because it was able to fulfill the criteria of inclusion set by the researchers. They were also selected because they were affected by Typhoon Yolanda. The study used Mixed Methods to gather data. These consisted of keyinformant interviews, focused group discussions, secondary data analysis, surveys and transect walk. All these were deployed to gather data on the situation of the IPs in Mabuyong before and after Typhoon Yolanda in the following aspects: physico- environmental; econo-human; politico- institutional and;socio-cultural. The researchers also gathered information about the incorporation of IP interests, and the level of intervention of the LGUs in local DRR initiatives and development plans. Lastly, the researchers looked into the lessons learned after Typhoon Yolanda and surveyed the level of the community resilience, awareness, and response towards disaster.The findings revealed that: (a) the physico- environmental, econo-human, politico-institutional and socio-cultural contexts of the IP community are faced with a high level of vulnerability and risk exposure; (b) The incorporation of IP interests in the DRR and development programs revealed two contradicting views: The LGU's assessment was positive, and the incorporation of IP interests in policy and plans were present while the NGO and the IP community perceived such incorporation to be absent, insufficient and largely incompatible towards the IP needs; (c) Lastly, community awareness, resilience, and response of the IPs of Mabuyong were significantly low according to the survey. The study also found that the establishment of linkages among sectors and the active participation as well as reconciliation of the IPs in planning are necessary. The Typhoon Yolanda experience served as one proof that the IPs of Mabuyong needs more attention and assistance from the municipality.

    A case analysis of the rehabilitation programs of the Municipality of Pavia, Iloilo after typhoon Frank

    This undergraduate research entitled A Case Analysis of the Rehabilitation Programs of the Municipality of Pavia, Iloilo after Typhoon Frank presents the different rehabilitation programs implemented by the Local Government of Pavia and their effects to the people of the said municipality. Using three different methods of data gathering and data triangulation, the researchers found out that the LGU of Pavia implemented a number of rehabilitation programs which include human, structural and livelihood rehabilitation. Results, however, show that there is an information gap between the implementers and the receiving end since the people barely recognize or are aware of, or are dissatisfied with the efforts and the performance of the LGU. The results also highlight some of the factors that lead to the vulnerability of the Municipality of Pavia to natural hazards. The analysis, which uses Piers Blaikie’s Release of Pressures Model, entails the ways by which the vulnerabilities of the municipality will be solved and eventually progress to safety. The researchers’ recommendations include suggestions for improvement based on the thematic areas of the Hyogo Framework for Action: governance; risk assessment; knowledge and information; risk management and vulnerability reduction, and, disaster preparedness and response.

    Heavy metal concentrations in sediments from Batan Bay and its tributaries

    The concentration of three heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu) in sediments from Batan Bay and its tributaries were determined in order to assess the degree of contamination of sediments in the said area. The samples were digested following the Method 3050B of US Environmental Protection Program (EPA, 1996). The heavy metal concentrations were determined using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (FAAS). Results show that the heavy metal concentrations ranged from n.d. - 2.57 mg/kg dry weight (dw) for Cd; 16.44-143.02 mg/kg dw for Cu; and 3.18-28.53 mg/kg dw for Pb. Sediment sample collected from BTN #10 has the highest Cd concentration while sediment sample collected from BTN 052 which is a rice field in Batan, Aklan registered the highest Pb and Cu concentrations. Three sediment quality guidelines (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Canadian Sediment Quality Guideline and Hong Kong Sediment Quality Guideline) were employed to assess the metal contamination in sediments. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in all sites did not exceed the maximum permissible limits set by the three guidelines. As for Cu, BTN 052 exceeded the Upper Chemical Exceedance Level set by Hong Kong SQG. Correlation analysis showed that there is a significant correlation (p <0.01) between Pb and Cu indicating possible similar source input. Special attention must be given to BTN 052 since the levels of the studied heavy metals are high in this area. The results can be used as basis for the pollution level of sediments from Batan Bay and its tributaries. Special consideration should be given to BTN 052 since all of the test metals are significantly high in this area. It is also suggested to in identify the primary sources of metal contamination in this area.

    Community structure, biomass production and carbon stock assessment of mangroves in Barangay Ambolong, Batan, Aklan

    Mangroves are evergreen shrubs and trees of several unrelated families that thrive within intertidal zones of sheltered flats, coves, bays, and estuarine regions extending inland along streams and river where water is primarily brackish. Continued threats to their existence call for their protection and conservation. This study was conducted to assess the community structure of mangroves in Brgy. Ambolong, Batan, Aklan by 1). measuring physico-chemical parameters (salinity, temperature, pH) 2). describing the community structure in terms of and in terms of a) basal area, b) stems per hectare, c) relative density, d) relative frequency, e) relative dominance, f) importance value, g) Index of Diversity, h) seedling and sapling density, and i) zonation pattern; 3). to assess the bidmass production and carbon stock. This study was done to provide preliminary information regarding the current status of mangroves in the area. Three (3) transect lines, each containing three (3) plots, were established in the area. Twenty (20) mangrove species belonging to eleven (11) families were identified: Acanthaceae - Acanthus ebreatus, Acanthus volubilis; Arecaceae - Nypa fruticans; Avicenniaceae - Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia rumphiana; Bombaceae — Camptostemon philippinensis; Euphorbiaceae - Excoecaria agallocha; Meliaceae — Xylocarpus grioanatum, Xylocarpus moluccensis; Myrsinaceae — Aegiceras corniculatum; Myrtaceae - Osbornia octodonta; Rhizophoraceae - Bruguiera cylindrica, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa; Rubiaceae - Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea; Sonneratiaceae - Sonneratia alba. Water salinity in the study area ranged from 27-30 ppt; soil temperature ranged from 28°C to 30°C. Avicennia marina had the highest values for basal area (4.22 m2/ha), stems per hectare (15,700 stems per hectare), relative density (63.56), relative frequency (63.56%), relative dominance (48.10%), and was the most important species with the importance value of 175. Rhizophora stylosa had the lowest values for basal area (0.002 m2/ha), stems per hectare (100 stems/ha), relative density (0.40 trees/ha), relative frequency (0.4%), relative dominance (0.23%), and was the least important species, having the importance value of 0.832. Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia officinalis, together with Rhizophora stylosa, had the lowest value for stems per hectare (100 stems/ha), relative density (0.40 trees/ha), and relative frequency (0.4%). Seedling density was highest for Avicennia alba(187 seedlings/ha) and lowest for Bruguiera cylindrica (1 seedling/ha). Sapling density was highest for Avicennia marina (54 saplings/ha) and lowest for Excoecaria agallocha (1 sapling/ha). The Index of Diversity was H=0.598. The highest recorded litter was 336.6 g in December 19, 2012-January 2, 2013 while the lowest was recorded at 18.2 grams in December 5-December 29, 2012. Highest biomass production was that of Avicennia marina (962.94 tons/ha), while the lowest was Avicennia officinalis (0.009 tons/ha). Avicennia marina had the highest carbon stock value of 433.32 tons/ha; the lowest was that of Avicennia officinalis (0.004 tons/ha).

    A preliminary study on the extraction of alginic acid from three species of brown algae: Sargassum polycystum, Sargassum cristaefolium and Turbinaria sp. in Taklong Is.,Guimaras

    Three species of brown algae were harvested in Taklong Is., Guimaras. These were Sargassum polycystum, Sargassum cristaefolium, and Turbinaria sp. These brown algae were subjected to physical and chemical treatment to extract and compare the amount of their alginic acid in the form of sodium alginate. Four seaweed collections for extraction were made between August to December, 1995. Values obtained during the first three extractions gave almost similar results. S. polycystum exhibited the highest percentage yield of sodium alginate with a mean of 22.84%. It was followed by S. cristaefolium at 22.21%. Turbinaria sp. gave the lowest yield with a mean of 14.12%. The last extraction somehow showed a decrease in the percentage yield of all three samples. S. polycystum yielded just 20.00%, S. cristaefolium at 19.00% and Turbinaria sp. at just. 10.10%. Several factors may have contributed to the differences in the amount of alginic acid of the three species of brown algae. Among these are the inherent capability of the different species of brown algae to produce alginates, the thickness and sturdiness of the samples, the viscosity of the extracts, and seasonal changes.

    Cost analysis of coral gardening in Bato Bukay MPA, Guimbal, Iloilo

    This study analyzes the costs of coral gardening in Bato Bukay MPA in Guimbal. Iloilo. Cognizant of the degradation of their coastal areas and fisheries, the community of Bgy Nalundan, where the marine protected area is located, sought to find solution through marine conservation and coral gardening. Being the habitat and breeding grounds of fishes, coral reefs are one of the most important natural resources that people must protect. Hence, several projects were implemented to propagate the establishment of Marine Protected Areas such as the deployment of artificial reefs and coral gardening activities. Costs of coral gardening in the site were estimated using key informant interviews with individuals who were involved with or who were knowledgeable on the establishment and maintenance of the project, and from secondary sources, thereby enabling the computation of the total costs. A survey of randomly selected participants that included Contingent Valuation Method was conducted in barangays Nalundan, Calampitao and Cabubugan, to determine the socio-economic profile and estimate the local community support through their willingness-to-pay and willingness to support in kind. Proportional sampling formula, adjusted to small population was used to determine the number of these participants across the barangays. The total cost for coral gardening on its first year was estimated as Php 336.684 combining all the fixed, variable and opportunity costs incurred. Out of the total costs, 40% amounted as fixed costs, while 33% were variable costs, and 27% constituted opportunity costs. More people were willing to pay in-kind by volunteering than to pay in monetary terms for the project’s fund for sustainability.

    Density of mangrove trees in selected municipalities in the Province of Antique, Panay Island, Philippines

    Mangroves line one quarter of the world’s tropical coastlines, and approximately 117 countries and territories have mangrove resources within their borders. Although over recent years mangrove deforestation has occurred at a phenomenal rate worldwide, constant assessment in the Philippines has been made to monitor its current status. To characterize the density of mangrove trees better in Panay Island, surveys were undertaken within the coastal and riverine estuaries in the 11 municipalities of the province of Antique. Detailed records were taken by transect and ocular surveys along 40 barangays with 75 transects and 223 plots established. The mangroves of Antique were composed of 31 species of true mangroves belonging to 14 families and a total of 16 generas. Considerable values in terms of relative density and stems per hectare were found with Nypa fruticans as the highest, with a relative density of 70.372% trees per hectare and an average stem density of 4,457.249 stems/ha. Other significant species included Sonneratia alba (4.534%; 625 stems/ha), Avicennia marina (4.524%; 1,525 stems/ha), and Rhizophora apiculata (4.232%; 50 stems/ha). Close examination of the data suggested the variability of distribution patterns and density to be attributable to the differing responses of individual species to the environmental factors and other human activities. It was also concluded that habitat classification and topography could directly affect mangrove distribution and also capable of altering basic zonation patterns.

    Phytoplankton assemblages in contrasting seasons in the area of Banate Bay, Iloilo, Philippines

    Banate Bay in Iloilo is one of the major food and occupation contributors in the Panay Island because of its rich biodiversity. This study investigated the phytoplankton assemblage and their diversity with respect to the contrasting seasons namely; December 2012 and June 2013 on the pre-selected nine (9) stations of the Coastal Ecosystem Conservation and Adaptive Management (CECAM) Project. Physicochemical parameters such as salinity, turbidity, DO, and pH did not display seasonality but total suspended solids (TSS) did, with increased values resulting from run-off from the surrounding watershed and rivers. Principal Component Analysis divided the stations during the two months into groups. Station B3 during June 2013 possessed low salinity level, low turbidity level, low pH level and a very high DO level. While the other stations during June 2013 and all the stations during December 2012 possessed higher salinity levels, higher turbidity levels, higher pH levels and lower DO levels. While the PC2 of PCA divided the stations according to the TSS levels and the temperature. All stations during December 2012 showed characteristics of higher TSS levels and lower temperatures while stations during June 2013 were observed to have low TSS levels and higher temperatures. A total of 86 genera falling under six families were identified from the samples, namely: bacillariophyceae (49 genera), dinophyceae (24 genera), cyanophyceae (6 genera), silicoflagellate (4 genera), chlorophyceae (1 genus), euglenophyceae (1 genus) and Miscellaneous (2 genera). In December 2012, a total of 84 genera were identified and 86 genera in June 2013. The top 10 genera with the highest mean densities were Bacteriastrum, Chaetoceros, Eutintinnus, Guinardia, Leptocylindricus, Lioloma, Protoperidinium, Thallasiothrix and Trichodesmium. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed that water temperature and TSS were the most significant parameters influencing the distribution and seasonal shift in phytoplankton families and genera such as Bacillariophyceae, Others (composed of Euglenophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Myrionecta, and Globigerina), Protoperidinium, and Guinardia. pH and DO had minor influence on phytoplankton distribution. Shannon- Wiener diversity index as a pollution index suggested that the study area was incipiently polluted at stations Bl, B2, and B3 and marginally polluted at Stations B4, B5, GN1, GN2, GS1, and GS2. Despite potential effects of various human activities, the water quality and phytoplankton assemblage of this area has not reached an alarming situation. The current study provides valuable baseline data.

    Willingness-to-pay for the conservation of Mararison Island and its surrounding waters in Culasi, Antique

    The island of Mararison in the municipality of Culasi, Antique Province is rich in natural resources and its beautiful scenic view has been attracting tourists. Overtime, the number of tourists has increased, making the island and its surrounding waters vulnerable to degradation. Protection and conservation of the island and its surrounding waters will promote its sustainability. This study was conducted to determine the willingness-to-pay (WTP) of the local residents of the municipality of Culasi for the conservation of Mararison Island and its surrounding waters. The study also described the socio-demographic and economic characteristics, level of awareness, knowledge and attitude towards the conservation and the reasons for the willingness to pay of the residents for the conservation of the island and its surrounding waters. The Contingent Valuation Method was used to determine the study participants’ WTPs. Binary logit regression was conducted to identify the factors affecting the study participants’ WTP. A pilot-tested interview schedule was used to collect data from 300 randomly selected study participants in 10 barangays in the municipality of Culasi in January to April 2016. The results showed that 86 percent of the study participants were willing to pay (with adjustment to certainty) for the conservation program. Without adjustment to the level of certainty, the annual household income, the randomly assigned bid prices, and knowledge index were the variables that affect the willingness-to-pay of the study participants. With adjustment to the level of certainty, the age, educational attainment (elementary and high school), knowledge index and randomly assigned bid prices were the variables that affect the willingness-to-pay of the study participants. The annual mean WTP of the study participants with and without adjustment to the level of certainty were Pl66 and Pl40, respectively. This study can be used by the municipality of Culasi as basis in planning for the conservation program of the Mararison Island and its surrounding waters.
