    Oplan BAYANIHAN : kaBAYAN, Inodoro, iHandog sa mga Aeta Nating kababayan

    Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are caused by parasitic worms or helminths that are transmitted to people through contaminated soil. The main species are the roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), the whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and the hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale). It is more prevalent among children living in conditions of poor sanitation particularly in indigenous people (IP) groups in the Philippines. OPLAN BAYANIHAN (kaBAYAN, Inodoro iHandog sa mga Aeta Nating Kababayan) primarily aimed to decrease the prevalence of soil- transmitted helminthiasis (STH) among the Aeta children of Purok V, Barangay San Nicolas, Buenavista, Guimaras. A responsible and functional core group was organized to assist in the implementation and monitoring of the projects. A stool examination was conducted prior to the construction of toilet facilities and results showed that all 30 Aeta children tested were positive for STH. The post stool examination was not performed due to the strict compliance of the Municipal Health Office to their biannual mass de worming schedule, but it will be performed after the mass deworming in Sitio Serum Bukid on April 3, 2O14.The knowledge and awareness regarding soil-transmitted helminthiasis increased by 30% or more through interactive lectures on how to prevent and control STH and on the proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE). The knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of the Aetas regarding proper hygiene increased by 30% or more through interactive lectures and trainings on hand washing, tooth brushing, and grooming. Flyers were distributed among Aeta parents and storybooks were handed over to the Day Care Center of Sitio Serum Bukid, and Kindergarten and Elementary teachers of San Nicolas Primary School. Nine toilet facilities were constructed and the installation of a clean and potable water source is underway.

    Effect of soil amendments on damping-off disease of tomato

    Different soil amendments obtained commercially were tested for their ability to suppress damping-off disease of tomato. Compost, animal manure, inorganic fertilizer, and green manure were applied to autoclaved soil prior to addition of a pathogenic inoculum. The biological control of the damping-off disease was evaluated by monitoring disease incidence in every plot of 50 seedlings for 25 days. Compost and animal manure significantly reduced disease incidence while green manure and inorganic fertilizer did not yield significant results as compared to the nonamended control soil. Percent emergence, dry matter content, and height were not at all affected by the different treatments.

    The relationship between the intensity of common soil-transmitted intestinal helminthiasis and nutritional status among schoolchildren of Miagao-West Central Elementary School (MWCES), Miagao, Iloilo

    This study aimed to determine the relationship between the intensity of infection of common soil-transmitted intestinal helminths (STH): Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and Hookworm species (Ancylostoma duodeuale and Necator americamus) and nutritional status among schoolchildren of Miag-ao West Central Elementary School (MWCES). This study also aimed to determine the prevalence of STH infection and nutritional status, either stunted or underweight schoolchildren. There were 285 study participants out of 436 schoolchildren of Miag-ao West Central Elementary School. Stool samples of the study participants were analyzed using Modified Kato-Katz Technique to determine the intensity of infections. The study participants were grouped according to the intensity of infection: negative, light and moderate to heavy. Nutritional status of the study participants was also determined and was classified into stunted, underweight and normal. Height-for-age value was used to determine stunting and weight-for-age value to determine those who are underweight. Frequency count was used for the descriptive analysis of the data gathered. The Chi-square test for association was used in the inferential statistics. The result of the study reveals that 51.2 % of the respondents were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, 36.5 % with Trichuris trichiura and 4.9 % with hookworm. The findings also show that 16 8 % of the respondents were stunted and 27.4 % were underweight. Finally, study reveals that there is no significant relationship between the nutritional status and the intensity of infection of common soil- transmitted intestinal helminths among the schoolchildren of Miag-ao West Central Elementary School (p= 0 706)
