Item Relationship between media exposure and attitude of Iloilo City Junior High School students towards indigenous peoplesAmon, Abigail; Garzon, Ma. Mercedes (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-05)This research discusses the relationship between media exposure and the attitude of selected Iloilo City public junior high school students towards the indigenous peoples. Three hundred junior high school students from Bo. Obrero National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Mandurriao National High School, Ramon Avanceña National High School, and SPED - Integrated School for Exceptional Children served as respondents to a five-part questionnaire that included demographics, exposure to media and IPs, attitude, additional questions regarding the relationship between their media exposure and their attitude towards IPs, and the information they received and wished to receive from media. The researchers found that students were most exposed to online media and that they had low exposure to mediated content on indigenous peoples on all media platforms. It was concluded that respondents had an overall positive attitude towards indigenous peoples. Moreover, both the media industry and the educational system should be more responsible in supporting the IPs through wider media coverage and introduction to more media platforms.Item Comparison of the growth of green algae, Nephroselmis sp. at different mediaAgana, Julie Ann E. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)Green algae play a significant role in the maintenance of the hatchery of economically important crustaceans, where a continuous supply of algae is needed to feed the larvae. Moreover, microalgae have the potential to be used to produce chemically complex molecules, which are difficult to synthesize. Thus, the present study was conducted to compare the growth of the green algae, Nephroselmis sp., using three different media. Specifically, the study aims (1) to compare the effect of different media on the growth of Nephroselmis sp. and (2) to determine which medium is the most suitable for growth of Nephroselmis sp. The result of the study showed that there was no significant difference in the growth of the green algae Nephroselmis sp. at three different media. The results showed that quantities of chemical composition of the different media are already sufficient for the growth of Nephroselmis sp.Item Trends in the work profession of BABC graduates, SY 2001-2004Acosta, Meryll Joyce; Rojo, Rea Ann; Yulo, Novy Katherene (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-10)This study was conducted to find out the trends or patterns in the work profession of BA Broadcast Communication graduates from school years 2001-2002, 2002-2003, and 2003-2004 using sex and major field as variables. It also aims to find out what other jobs BABC graduates have, what factors affected them, and how satisfied are they with their jobs. This study was conducted during the first semester of the school year 2004-2005. Respondents chosen for this study were 140 graduates of BABC from school years 2001-2004. However, only 39 were able to reply. The locale of the study includes various places in the Philippines, mostly Metro Manila, Iloilo City, and Iloilo Province. The research design used in this study is descriptive. Results of the study show that majority of BABC graduates do not end up in the media. Those who were able to get into broadcast-related jobs do not plan to stay for good in their present jobs. On the other hand, those who did not get into broadcast-related jobs plan to pursue these kinds of jobs. The study also shows that most BABC graduates within the said school years are moderately satisfied with their present jobs.Item A critical analysis of the movie "Bikini Open"Aportadera, Ela Vanessa; Azarcon, Rudylyne; Baldeviso, Donna Marie; Novelo, Fiona; Punsalan, Jona Marie (Division Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-10-21)This study entitled "A Critical Analysis of the Movie Bikini Open," will find out whether the said film affirms the real state of Philippine Mass Media. The study aims to identify the issues on Phi lippine media depicted in the movie, point out the issues confronting media in the Philippine society, determine the similarities and differences of the issues depicted in the movie with the current state of Philippine media and society, analyze the issues reflected in the movie in the context of Philippine media and society, and point out the implications of the movie on the Philippine media and society. Twelve professionals from Iloilo City coming from the academe, television, radio, and print media and the film's director served as respondents of the study. The study used Critical Theories of Communication in analyzing the film in the context of Philippine media and society. Results of the study indicate that Philippine media tends to serve the interest of the dominating class such as advertisers and media owners who exercise power over those below them intheir pursuit of economic interests. Philippine mass media is leaning towards the practice wherein corporate responsibility takes over social responsibility. With competition, the media resorted to sensationalism and exploitation. Moreover, media content is used as a commodity in order to sell. Finally Philippine media serves as a potent force in shaping the way of life of the people. Although such ills in the media occur, this does not generally speak for the entire Philippine mass media. Thus, this study concluded that the film "Bikini Open" partly affirmed the state of Philippine media in reality.Item Physical characterization of aswang in Filipino filmsArcenio, Ariane G.; Perez, Trexie Jane A. (Division of of Humanities , College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This study is a content analysis on the physical characterization of aswang in Filipino films. This study determined how the Filipino films characterized aswang. Descriptive research design was used in analyzing and tallying the physical characteristics of aswang in the Filipino concept and in the eight Filipino films. Interviews with film directors were also utilized for additional support of this study. The concept of aswang emerged because of the demonization of women especially the babaylans, by the Spanish priests in the history of the Philippines. It was found out that in both Filipino concept and Filipino films, there were differences on the physical characterization of aswang. Films used the concept of aswang to perform the role of media which is to entertain the audience.Item Desensitizing effects of violent media on bullyingAnasis, Anna Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences , University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)The study examined the links between repeated exposure to violent media stimuli and desensitization to violence as a predictor variable and bullying tendency as outcome variables. Participants in two different conditions were made to watch a different set of video clips for three nonconsecutive days. Experimental groups were made to watch violent video clips, and for control group, nonviolent video clips. Following the clip, participants for both group completed a Positive and Negative Affect Schedule to measure desensitization and Tendency to Bully Scale to measure the tendency of the participants to bully. One-way analysis of variance and test of means were used to determine whether there are significant differences between sessions and between groups. The result showed significant results across variables except for the positive affect on the last session. Repeated exposure to violent video clips was found to increase experimental participants positive affect, decrease negative affect and increase the tendency to bully. Speculations were drawn from these results.
