Braga, Mayet Ann D.; Gordon, Cyrus John G.; Guisihan, Thanz Pamela G., II; Jamili, JC John T.; Ledesma, Migil G.; Lim, Diana L.; Lim, Lenny Joy G.; Malalu-an, Rosalie A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)
The study is a cross-sectional survey of 138 randomly selected households from ten (10) similarly randomly-selected barangays in Valderrama, Antique. This study aims to determine household food security and nutritional status of pre-schoolers in Valderrama, Antique. The study specifically aimed to: determine the status of household food security in Valderrama, Antique; describe the characteristics of households in terms of Age and Highest Educational Attainment of Caretakers, Annual Family Income (in Pesos), Income Allotment for Food, House Ownership, Number of Household Members and Food Source; and compare the nutritional status of pre-schoolers of food secure and food insecure households based on the following anthropometric parameters: Weight for age (WFA), Height / length for age (H/LFA) and Weight for height (WFH). The study is patterned after the national survey done by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) that ranked Antique as the province with the highest degree of malnutrition. Food security was determined using the Food-Security/Hunger Core Module, 3-Stage Design, with Screeners. Anthropometric measurements were taken from randomly selected preschoolers aged 0-5 from each household to determine the nutritional status. The current study revealed that the prevalence of food insecurity in Valderrama, Antique is very high at 94.9%. The level of food insecurity was further determined and the following results were obtained: 17.6% of the food insecure households were without hunger; 56.5% were the food insecure households were without hunger; 56.5% were food insecure with moderate hunger, and, 26.0% were food insecure with severe hunger. Only 5.1% of the households surveyed were food secure. The results showed that in terms of the anthropometric parameters used in the study (Weight for Age, Height for Age, Weight for Height), all pre-schoolers in food secure households were normal. On the other hand, in food insecure households, the prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting were high. Using the parameter Weight-For-Age (WFA), the prevalence of underweight children was 38.2%, which is higher than the national average of 27.6%. Using the Height-for-Age (HFA), 43.5% of pre-schoolers in the area were stunted (underheight) and which is again higher than the national average of 38.5%. The prevalence of wasting in the study was alarmingly high (14.5%) which is almost three times higher than the national average of 5.5%. The results obtained may be used as baseline data in planning intervention programs by the municipal government and concerned agencies (Government Organizations and Non-Government Organizations) to address the alarming problem of malnutrition in the municipality.

Investigation of the impact of food and insecurity to the nutritional status of children 6 to 71 months using the Radimer/Cornell Questionnaire among the rural poor in Brgy. Nabitasan, Leganes, Iloilo
Boncavil, David Allan V.; Chan, Tsarina M.; Erum, Lesley Anne L.; Galas, Caryl E.; Hernandez, Yryka E.; Juele, Sheila Mae A.; Magalonga, April Raye F.; Ogena, Vanessa C. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
One of the main objectives of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to achieve zero hunger through food security. Within the Municipality of Leganes, Barangay Nabitasan has consistently ranked as the barangay with the most cases of undernourished children aged 6-71 months old. Nabitasan is located 5 kilometers away from poblacion and the locals are handicapped by their limited purchasing power and source of water and their lack of alternative source of food. Accordingly, this cross- sectional study investigated the impact of food insecurity to the nutritional status of 159 children aged 6 to 71 months old in Barangay Nabitasan, Leganes, Iloilo. The children’s nutritional status was determined based on their Weight for Age (WFA) while the respondents for the Radimer/Cornell Questionnaire were the respective mothers or guardians of the children. The Radimer/Cornell Hunger Scale was utilized to measure food security in terms of hunger. Additionally, the results of the scale were correlated to the following sociodemographic factors: age of the mother/guardian, annual family income, income allotment for food, household size, number of children, sibling rank, food source, educational attainment of the mother/guardian. Using chi square test it was found that there was a significant relationship between food security and the nutritional status of the children (X2=5.729, df=l, p- value<0.05). Odds ratio showed that a child that belongs to a food secure household is 2.715 times more likely to be normal than a child that belongs to a food insecure household. Furthermore, factors that were associated with food security were identified through logistic regression. 8 covariates were included in the analysis and the generated model identified the covariates that contributed most and were significantly associated with food security. The model tells us that: 1.) Increasing annual family income was associated with an increased likelihood of being food secure 2.) increasing number of children was associated with a decreased likelihood of being food secure and 3.) having both market and alternative food source, compared to those who rely on market alone, increases the likelihood of being food secure. It is significant to note that the model generated by this study correctly predicted 76.1% of the observed food security status of the cases; this may indicate that there are still other important determinants of food security that have not been identified and that further studies should consider including these.

A tale of two pantries: The case of Iloilo City in time of COVID -19 pandemic
Bolinas, Neil Alfred L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-07)
This case study focuses on the community pantries in Barangay Mansaya- Lapuz, Lapuz and Barangay Rizal, La Paz, Iloilo City. Documentation and analysis of the two community pantries were conducted using the data gathered from Key- Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions. The simple logic model for Theory of Change (W. K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004) was used as the theoretical framework of the study and guided the analysis. The study showed that two major factors motivated the organization of the pantry. The personal motivations revolved around the organizers’ personal beliefs and principles and the societal motivations includes the increment of poverty and food insecurity experienced by community members. Resources are a vital component of the pantries as this dictates the pantries’ operation and services. The provision of food was the main goal of the pantries, while the objectives focused differently among organizers. During the operations, there are issues and challenges that occurred but were not able to affect the operation of the community pantries. The emergence and operations of the pantry affected community members through their values, practices, and change in socioeconomic conditions. The pantries also produced realizations among the organizers and barangay officials particularly on improving the access to basic needs of the members of the community. The community pantry proved to be significant in addressing food insecurity during crisis times, however the intervention is only a short-term response. Furthermore, the communities are encouraged to address food insecurity guided by needs assessment analysis, strong community engagement, regular budget allocation for the vulnerable families, strong public-partnership, and consistent monitoring and evaluation which are critical components of a community-based food security program learned from their experience.

Bajade, Ian Louie V.; Macaldo, Felipe E., Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-04)
This research project is an exploratory study which determines the power relations among individuals, groups, groupings and entities involved in rice production process in the rice producing irrigated area of Northeastern Iloilo. This study was conducted in the Barangays of Tabucan and Cabilauan of Barotac Nuevo and Tuburan and Tomcon Ilaud of Pototan using interviews with respondents and selected key informants and secondary data taken from the records of the Municipal Agrarian Reform Office, local government units, Philippine National Police blotter and farmers' organization of the locale of the study as sources of information of this research project. It was found out that: (1) there is a three level class structure in the locale of the study; (2) the three level class structure leads to a corresponding three level power relations among individuals inside the realm of rice production process; (3) the tenurial arrangements solely determines the distribution of productivity among individuals and entities involve in rice production and (4) the tenants are biggest class of exploiters in the production process brought about by the widespread practice of sub- tenurial arrangement-pamorsyento which makes the tenants "ersatz landlord" and exploiters of the nagapamorsyento-farm laborer. Tracing the flow of politics in rice producing irrigated area, it was found that the tenurial arrangement gives shape to the power relations in the locale of the study.

Almero, Flora B.; Gerona, Ma. Leda G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-12)
This research project is an assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo. The study covers the fourteen (14) coastal municipalities of the Province namely; the Municipality of Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Dumangas, Estancia, Miag- ao, Oton, San Dionisio, San Joaquin and Tigbauan. The primary data were taken from the various municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities under study, and the national fishery policies (RA 7160, PD 704, RA 8550). The researchers also employed field interviews with selected fisherfolk leaders as a source of first hand information concerning the recent situation of the fishery industry in their respective municipalities. It was found that: (1) the fishery industry in the Province of Iloilo is facing problems on overexploitation, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction; (2) the primary concern of the over-all policy mosaic for the fishery industry is the rehabilitation and protection of the coastal environment, the limitation of access to fishery resources comes as the secondary concern, while the protection of the rights of municipal fisherfolk appears in a very limited number of promulgations only; (3) generally the provisions in the over-all policy mosaic is consistent and complimentary, both vis-a-vis the national fishery policies and within their respective municipal fishery ordinances where the provisions belongs. Assessing the municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, it was found that the goal of the over-all policy mosaic is the promotion of sustainable development for the fishery industry so as to achieve food security in terms of fish.
