Item Mangrove community structure survey in Barangay Guisi and Linayasan, Altavas, AklanBullo, Gliford G. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-04)The mangrove forest is a complex and unique community of medium to large tress, shrubs, vines and palms, oddly thriving with luxuriant growth in the least inviting habitats which have the barest and limited conditions for the growth and survival of higher plant life. This study aims to assess the community structure of mangroves in Barangay Guisi and Linayasan, Altavas, Aklan using accepted ecological indicators. The sampling site, Altavas, Aklan is located at the upper median of Panay Island. There was a total of 15 true mangrove species belonging to the 9 families in the area. The nine families are Family Myrsinaceae represented by Aegiceras corniculatum, Family Avicenniaceae represented by Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis and Avicennia rumphiana; Family Rhizophorceae represented by Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Bruguiera parviflora; Family Bombacaceae represented by Camptostemon phihppensis; Family Rubiaceae represented by Scyphiphora hydrophylaceae; Family Meliaceae represented by Xylocarpus granatum and Family Palmae represented by Nypa fruticans. Avicennia rumphiana has the highest mean basal area of 23.21 (m2/ha), while Xylocarpus granatum had the lowest mean basal area of 0.01 (m2/ha). Avicennia rumphiana has the highest relative density of 57, while Xylocarpus granatum has the lowest relative density with a value of 1. Avicennia rumphiana and Avicennia officinalis had the highest relative frequency of 19.8667 Aegiceras corniculatum, Excoecaria agallocha, Scyphtphora hydrophylaceae and Xylocarpus grunatum on the other hand had the lowest relative frequency of 0.4. Avicennia rumphiana is the dominant species with a relative dominance value of 23.66, and Xylocarpus granatum is the least dominant species with relative dominance value of 0.01. Avicennia rumphiana is the most important species in the area with an importance value of 127.1816, and the least important species, as observed, is Xylocarpus granatum with an importance value of 1.685863. The index of diversity is 0.918655 for the entire area.Item Diversity and structural complexity of mangrove stands in Barangay Mag-aba, Pandan, AntiqueBolivar, Lucille S. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)Mangrove forests provide a variety of ecological functions and economic services. However, full realization of these is also hampered by lack of understanding of the structural complexity that brings about a unique ecosystem. There is a need to understand the current status and dynamics of mangroves under threats of both natural and anthropogenic factors. The mangrove forest at Barangay Mag-aba, Pandan, Antique, that is part of the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park, is one of the few patches of mangroves in Antique offering good opportunity to study diversity and stand structure. This study provides an important baseline data for conservation efforts and for comparison with other mangrove stands in the region. This study aimed to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the mangrove community structure of the Mag-aba mangrove forest. Specifically, the objectives of this study included (1) determination of selected physical and chemical factors affecting mangroves, (2) identification and classification of true mangrove species in the area and (3) analysis of the community structure. The modified line plot method for community structure survey was applied. A total of 19 true mangrove species from eight families were recorded in the area with Family Acanthaceae being the most represented. The stand basal area of 35.48 m2/ha was indicative of a mature community system. Structure analysis showed that Excoecaria agallocha (31.31%) was the most dominant species and had the highest importance value (81.29) followed by Bruguiera cylindrica, Xylocarpus granatum and Sonneratia alba. Trees made up 50% of the community composition with a density of 2044.44 t/ha. Barangay Mag-aba had a mean species diversity index (H’) of 0.95 indicating a low number of species present and a mean species evenness value (J’) of 0.38 indicative of an unequal species distribution. High complexity and diversity were observed in the upper intertidal zone where soil salinity is low. These results provide important insights to the underlying ecological functions of the mangroves in the area as basis of a more dynamic and intensive conservation action.Item Diversity and population structure of sea cucumber species in Taklong Island Marine Reserve, GuimarasBearnod, Christine F. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)The increasing demand of sea cucumbers in the market leads to the global exploitation of this animal. Marine reserve protects the marine biodiversity and teaches the people in the communities to manage their marine resources wisely. This study examined the diversity, species characteristics and population structure of sea cucumbers in five sites around Taklong Island Marine Reserve namely, Binabaywan, Kalirohan, south side of 2nd sandbar, north side of 2nd sandbar and Tarakpan. The species composition and abundance were determined through transect walks and plot along transects. Sea cucumber density was estimated by randomly positioned 1 square meter plots in each site. There were 11 sea cucumber species found. There were 9 species under Order Aspidochirota all in 1 Family Holothuriidae and 2 species in Order Apodida in 1 Family Synaptidae. A total of 64 individuals were sampled in 5 sites. The most widespread and the dominant species was the non-commercially valuable Synapta maculata (n = 32) followed by the low-value Holothuria pulla (n = 9) and Holothuria atra (n = 8). Kalirohan had the most number of species (Σs = 6) and individuals of sea cucumbers. The low number of holothurian species encountered in the Marine Reserve might be due to the limited sites surveyed, cryptic behaviour of the species and the possibility of poaching in the area.Item An institutional analysis of Sibalom Natural Park-Protected Area Management Board on community-based ecotourism in Sibalom, AntiqueAtienza, Perlyn F.; Pingoy, Whelannie Y. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)This is an exploratory and evaluative study aimed to conduct an institutional analysis of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), specifically, in the management of Sibalom Natural Park (SNP) in Sibalom, Antique. Seventeen (17) representatives from the three (3) member-institutions of PAMB and two (2) People’s Organizations (POs) were chosen through purposive interview as respondents. Focused group discussion (FGD) and key informant interview (KII) were utilized to gather necessary data. KII used a structured interview. Secondary data from the different member-institutions of PAMB were also sources of essential information needed in the study. The performance of PAMB in managing the SNP was analyzed based on the four components of management. These four components were delegations of functions, utilization of financial resources, conflict management, and leadership and mandates. It was found out that the SNP-PAMB members’ responsibilities were not clearly defined and there was no strict delineation of each of the member-institutions’ roles and functions. Since the organization does not have enough funds to sustain its existing projects and to initiate new ones, projects and activities were financed through the individual efforts of the members. Though there is lack of coordination among members, they do not consider it as conflict. Factors such as unstable financial status, limited activities, lack of a clear institutional structure hinder the implementation of the existing mandates for the operations of PAMB.
