Item To run or not to run: Intentions of politicians to participate in politicsBautista, Michelle M.; Del Rosario, Teri S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)The overall purpose of the study was to investigate the intentions of Filipino politicians to participate in politics, guided by Leek Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior. The study employed qualitative methodology involving a total of 10 interviews with political candidates from the province of Aklan. Participants were recruited using criterion sampling. Results showed that attitude towards political participation, perceived pressure from the public, political parties, and family members, belief in one’s capacity to pursue political activities, and past experience largely influence the intentions of politicians to engage in politics; and their intentions, in turn, were translated into actual political participation. Past experience and belief in one’s capacity to pursue political activities were found to directly influence political engagement, and all identified factors were also found to be associated with one another. The relationships of all the constructs were consistent with our modified model of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Overall, the study offered support to the use of qualitative methodology in utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior as a theoretical framework. The study also provided evidence that past experience could be included in the model of the Theory of Planned Behavior.Item A comparison of spelling in texting and formal writingBarrientos, Shiela Rose Z.; Vencer, Ruby Jean A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)This study, entitled A Comparison of Spelling in Texting and Formal Writing, shows the similarities and differences in spelling by high school students on mobile communication and in formal writing. It also provides educators basic information on whether or not they should worry over the spelling skills of students. And it will somehow shed light on the ongoing debate as to the perceived influence of text messaging on the writing skills of students. The respondents of the study were fourth-year students of Palaca-Damilisan National High School. Using essays and text messages written and composed by the high school students, the researchers aimed to describe how high school students construct messages using cellular phone, find out their commonly misspelled words in English language based on the set of words provided by the researchers, and finally to compare the way high school students spell words in text messaging and formal writing. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior of Ajzen (2006) that shows how a person’s beliefs, the social pressure to conform to the wishes of others, and perceived ability to carry out the action can affect his behavior such as spelling words in text messaging and formal writing. After the necessary data were gathered, the researchers found that majority of the respondents scored low in spelling in text messaging and scored average in the formal writing. Twenty or 48% has a low score both in text messaging and formal writing. Only two respondents got an average score both in text messaging and formal writing, while only one rated high in formal writing but scored low in text messaging. The researchers found out that in text messaging, five of the 15 words in the list were consistently misspelled while in formal writing, the respondents spelled properly all the words except for one, which is irresistible. In addition, respondents used contractions, numbers and symbols as substitute for letters and omitted some vowels in text messaging, while in formal writing the respondents do not substitute letters with numbers. The researchers recommend to conduct more studies on the perceived influence of technological advancement such as cellular phone on the word construction in formal writing, improve the questionnaire so as to satisfy other elements stated in the Theory of Planned Behavior, formulate survey questions that will measure the respondents’ English language skills, conduct a study that would compare the spelling skills of cellular phone and non-cellular phone users, and conduct the study on a group of respondents who are cellular phone users and have a high competence in the English language.Item Drivers' helping behavior towards pedestrians: The role of awareness, responsibility, and personal normsAlvero, Twinkle B.; Matondo, Jirah P. (Division of BSocial Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)The effects of individual's norms, consequences and responsibilities on helping behavior were tested using the Norm Activation Theory. A 2x2x2 within—subjects design utilizing the scenario based approach developed by Naumann (2004) was participated by twenty-five (n=25) company drivers, and the scores obtained were measured using Helping Attitude Scale (Nickell, 1998). Interviews were conducted to further understand and explain key information about participants. Results showed that positive personal norms and higher recognition of responsibility affected helping behavior but not awareness of consequences. However, no interaction effect was observed. Therefore, the study lends partial support to the theory. Implication points that companies and LTO must incorporate and promote personal norm enhancement and recognition of responsibility within their team building programs and trainings.Item Filipino otakuness: profile of anime fans in the Philippines: the case of UPV Genguken membersAnilado, Xelca Grace; Racadio, Zaira Nichole (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)Anime is a popular media in the Philippines that gathers a big following among the youth. It greatly affects the animation industry of the country because it already is an established foreign medium. The Filipino anime fans are undoubtedly influenced by anime, thus, certain traits and behaviors which are new and often considered as “weird” by other people had been manifested. With this, the researchers conducted an analysis of the characteristics and behavior of UPV Genguken members and how these traits prevail over time as they also deal with non-anime fans in their everyday life. It is designed to find out what qualities are common among these anime fans and what factors led them to adopt the Japanese anime subculture. The descriptive research design is employed in conducting this study. The study finds out that exposure to television is the main factor that caused the respondents to become anime fans. Another factor is that their parents left them alone to watch anime as long as they behaved well. For respondents who have siblings, the reason stated is that the latter also influenced them to watch anime. The anime fans’ shared qualities are the preference for subtitled videos and the constant desire for anime. They are also knowledgeable in the Japanese culture and even have a grasp of the Japanese language. In terms of personality, anime fans prefer to be alone but like to interact with fellow fans who are on the same level as they are, alone but not lonely, and are mostly silent. They want to see Filipino values, cultures, practices, and history in Filipino animation. The most popular genre among the respondents are horror and fantasy. For future researches, the differences in Japanese and Filipino communication styles should be studied to understand why so many of the youth are attracted to anime. It is also recommended to have further studies on the various concepts of an otaku from points of view of Filipino anime fans. Anime has a great impact on the Filipino anime fans in terms of their ways of living, language, appearances, and even attitudes. With that, the researchers recommend the Filipino animators to develop a style in animation that is distinct and easily recognizable as Filipino. This is to attract not just the Filipino anime fans but as well as all Filipinos to watch and patronize Filipino-produced animations.Item Effects of mood and self-awareness on an individual's helping behaviorAmponin, Charm Marie G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)This experimental research was conducted among student participants in the University to determine whether the differences in mood together with self-awareness can increase or decrease a person's helping behavior. It was also the aim of the researcher to find out if there are significant main effects on Mood and in Self-awareness towards helping. Participants were induced in a positive, neutral, or negative mood using articles having happy content, neither happy nor sad content, and sad content, respectively. On the other hand, self-awareness was measured using the mirror procedure. A brief mood questionnaire determined the story's effectiveness on the participant's affect. Using the Analysis of Variance and Tukey’s HSD test, with a computed F at .05 level of significance, results indicated that the main effect and interaction effect of mood and self-awareness produced a significant increase, as well as a significant decrease, in the participant’s expended effort to aid the researcher. Positive mood operated with self-awareness in increasing the participant's helping behavior to aid a person, while negative mood operated with self-awareness in decreasing their motivation to help. Having a positive feeling is viewed to be more inclined in giving assistance to those in need than those having bad feelings. More so when it makes a person aware that it feels good to give such aid. This study on mood and self-awareness confirmed that our emotions do affect behavior in helping others. Specifically, these determinants showed that being helpful may vary as a result of how a person feels at the moment and how consciously aware they are of themselves in a given situation.
