Item Economic analysis and adaptation measures of small-scale aquaculture in Roxas City, CapizBaes, Marla May A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)This research was conducted to find out the contribution of the aquaculture industry to the city and to the small-scale farmers of Roxas City. It also determined the socio-economic impacts brought by the hydrometeorological events and identified the adaptation measures employed by the local government and the aquaculture operators. This study used cost and returns analysis, market based approaches and OLS regression to analyze the data gathered from the 187 small-scale milkfish, mussel, and oyster farmers in Roxas City. The findings showed that the aquaculture industry significantly contributed to revenue, employment, production and profit. However, the industry was affected by hydrometeorological events which brought about significant damage cost. Most of the aquaculture operators employed various adaptation strategies to cope with these hydrometeorological occurences. Some of them, however, did not find it necessary to adapt because either they do not have enough money to finance adaptation strategies or they perceive that the impacts are not that significant. This study recommends that the government should provide other alternative climate-resilient livelihoods to the small- scale operators. It should also employ sustainable adaptation measures aside from providing trainings and seminars about aquaculture operation such as by integrating climate change adaptation techniques to aquaculture farming.Item Growth and nutritional content of red seaweed Gracilaria bailinae (Zhang et. al., 1995) grown under different fertilization schemeAlmojuela, Kristine Marie T. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-04)The accelerated development of fish aquaculture has caused many environmental problems. The most evident effects resulting from this activity is the increase in organic material, the reduction in dissolved oxygen and the excessive rise in inorganic nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and carbon dioxide. The integration of seaweeds to fed cultured species has long been recognized as promising approach to reduce the excess nutrients released by aquaculture activity. The nitrogen and phosphate uptake kinetics, growth and nutritional content of the seaweed Gracilaria bailinae were studied in a series of outdoor tanks, fertilized with commercial fertilizer (NH4CI, NaNO3, and Na2HPO4) and shrimp culture waste water. The nutritional content of G. bailinae before and after fertilization was also determined through proximate analysis. Results showed a significant removal of dissolved nutrients by G. bailinae, although definite uptake rate could not be determined since the data were erratic and Michaelis-Menten model could not be applied. Seaweeds fertilized with shrimp waste water showed best specific growth rate (1.37±0.2 % d-1) over other fertilization scheme. This suggests that shrimp pond effluents could promote good growth on G. bailinae. Local G. bailinae had high protein content per se (14%) but became more enhanced when fertilized with commercial or shrimp waste water (23-32%). In contrast, its carbohydrate content dropped when heavily fertilized from 39% to 19%.Item Fish farming and the fish community: The case of Victorias, Negros OccidentalApawan, Maylanie D. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04)The rapid expansion of aquaculture in the past decades has brought about some economic benefits, but it has also resulted in various social and environmental problems. This observation points to the need to look at aquaculture development beyond conventional measures emphasizing economic benefits; there is a need to focus on the interplay of social, economic, and environmental factors in looking at aquaculture development. This study looks at the social, economic, and environmental impacts of aquaculture on small fishers in three coastal villages in Victorias, Negros Occidental and examines the responses of small and subsistence fisherfolk to the growth and proliferation of fish farming. The study points out the social and environmental issues usually arise as a consequence of conflicts between fish farmers and small fishers in the use of land and water and also because of the effluent charge and chemical residues coming from fishpond operations. When contextualized within a larger set of social and ecological issues, these conflicts have wider implications, especially when these involve unequal distribution of costs and benefits among different stakeholders.Item The development of the aquaculture industry in the Philippines: 1970-1998Anico, Joecel Jones A.; Caulin, Ray D. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This paper presents and discusses the development of the aquaculture industry in the Philippines, the government policies, and the different factors that may have contributed to this. The aquaculture sector has been prioritized by the Philippine government from the 70's up to the present, viewing it as an integral component in country’s aim to attain economic development through the industry’s perceived positive impact on the communities where these activities take place. The study, however, found out that a closer look at tins so- called impact reveals that not everybody benefits from it. It was found out that the gains that aquaculture brings to these communities are only enjoyed by a selected few. The study also found out that the goals of increasing food supply and generating employment were not attained, at least in the view of the people living nearby these areas. The goal of generating foreign exchange is fulfilled, however, this only benefits an elite social group. These problems are attributed to the weaknesses of the social, political, and economic structures of the country and the loopholes in the design implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the policies and programs adopted by the government.
