Item The nature of social support in an intergenerational Ilonggo family in a fishing communityAlonday, Cheska Arianne C.; Casuyon, Meika Ella G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)Nuclear family has been the common type of family in the society in the past but as time passed by, different forms of family emerged as well as family structure and the dynamics of the family have been changing. This study focused on the nature of social support in an intergenerational Ilonggo family specifically in fishing community. It discussed the different types of support, such as financial, emotional, and instrumental, exchanged among the family members and illustrated each patterns of support through the use of sociometry for the analysis of data gathered. This study also aimed to know whether there is a connection between the degrees of interaction to the social support exchanged. An intergenerational family household was purposively selected in Miagao, Iloilo which served as a case study. Each family member was asked to evaluate other family members individually through questionnaires. The result showed that the norms and the gender roles play an important part in the exchange of social support of the Filipino family members including their role obligations as well as the degree of interaction do not dictate the support given and received by the family members.Item Family planning services availed by adolescent mothers in selected barangays in the Municipality of Miag-ao, IloiloCabrias, Clement C.; Sajonia, Twinkle T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)The study aims to know the various family planning services availed by adolescent mothers in selected barangays in Miag-ao, Iloilo. Likewise, it deals with family planning services that are available to adolescent mothers and the factors that may affect the availment of the family planning services. The study was conducted in three selected barangays in Miag-ao namely, Barangay Aguiauan, Barangay Tumagboc and Barangay Valencia. To determine the total number of respondents, their names are listed from each barangay health station. Using the complete enumeration method, ten adolescent mothers were taken as respondents of the study. The interview schedule comprised of open-ended and close-ended questions was used for gathering data and a separate key-informant questionnaire was used to get the profile of each barangay health station and to gather information about their existing family planning services. Important findings show that there is no specific family planning program directed to adolescents but for the married, adult population only, yet adolescent mothers can be provided family planning services if they seek for it. However, there are only limited choices on the family planning methods offered by the barangay health station, exclusive only on pills and DMPA and sometimes condom. In general, adolescent mothers find little difficulty in availing family planning services from the barangay health station but their decision to visit the area and whether to use contraceptives or not and what to choose are affected by several factors. Information on what services are available and their knowledge of the methods are the significant factors that affect their decision. Moreover, their partners are also an important factor in their decision to avail family planning services. It was found that adolescent mothers solicit the opinion of their partners before engaging in family planning.Item Coping mechanisms of family members with autistic childrenAbello, Mildren M.; Panes, Fritzie M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-04)This study aims to uncover the coping mechanisms of family members with autistic children. All five families are from Iloilo City. The study also sought to find out if and how the autistic child affects family cohesiveness. Ways of Coping Scale adopted from Folkman and Lazarus was utilized to determine the specific coping mechanism each family member is using. In-depth interview with the respondents was also conducted to come-up with a more detailed description of coping mechanism. The findings of the study show that the most mothers, sisters and the father predominantly use seeking meaning, an emotion-focused coping which is an attempt to discover new faith or what is important in life. On the other hand each brother uses different coping mechanisms in dealing with having an autistic member in the family. Results also show that having an autistic child makes the family more cohesive.Item Attachment to parents, psychological well-being, and life aspirations of children in selected coastal communitiesAraneta, Czarinnah G.; Suyo, Jee Grace B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), 2005-03)This study examined the level of attachment to parents and psychological well-being of the children and likewise the life aspirations of these children in selected coastal communities. Twenty-one males (21) and thirty-one (31) females with 12-16 years of age participated in this study. Two scales were used to rate the attachment to parents and psychological well-being of the respondents and an interview guide to know the life aspirations of the children. It was found out that the children of coastal communities generally have a positive psychological well-being and a high level of attachment to parents. The participants expressed their top three goals in life - finishing studies, life prosperity and service to God. They wanted to find high paying professional jobs and help in the income of their family. They also wished to live prosperously in a clean and peaceful community.
