Item Taxonomy and distribution of holothurians in selected sites within Panabolon Island, GuimarasBachoco, Raian Dennis (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04)This study mainly deals with the taxonomy and distribution of sub-tidal holothurians in 2 selected sites based on the predominant substrate and vegetation characteristics, within Panabolon Island. Sampling was done during low tides in the months of March and April 2001. A total of seven species in five genera belonging to families Synaptidae, Holothuriidae and Stichopodidae were recorded from the study area. The family Holothuriidae is the most common (4 species) of the three families. Synapta maculata is the most abundant species (33.33%) followed by Holothuria atra (27.27%) and Holothuria scabra (21.21%). (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)Mangroves in the Philippines are in constant danger due to innumerable disturbances in the environment. The study endeavored to assess the floristic composition and diversity of the mangroves in the province of Antique through transect and ocular survey in the randomly selected sites throughout the province. Diversity in the region is high with the presence of 3 1 true mangrove species represented by 16 families and 14 genera. The species include Acanthus ebracteatus, A. ilicifolius, and A. volubilis from Family Acanthaceae, Avicennia alba, A. marina. A. officinalis, and A. rhumphiana from Family Avicenniaceae, Camptostemon philippinensis from Family Bombaceae, Lumnitzera littorea and Lumnitzera racemosa from Family Combretaceae, Excoecaria agallocha from Family Euphorbiaceae, Pemphis acidula from Family Lythraceae, Xylocarpus granatum and Xylocarpus moluccensis from Family Meliaceae, Aegiceras corniculatum and Aegiceras floridum from Family Myrsinaceae, Osbornia octodonta of Family Myrtaceae, Nypa fruticans of Family Palmae, Bruguieria cvlindrica. B. gymnorrhiza, and B. sexangula, Ceriops decandra, C. tagal, Rhizophora apiculata. R. mucronata and R. stylosa from Family Rhizophoraceae, Scyphiphora hydrophvllaceae from Family Rubiaceae, Sonneratia alba, S. caseolaris and S. ovata from Family Sonneratiaceae, and Heritiera littoralis from Family Sterculiaceae . The Shannon Index of Diversity used to determine the measure of diversity in the area is correlated with Pielou's Equitability Index for Evenness. The measures of indices showed that diversity and evenness of the mangal area in the province are directly related, with values of 0.73232 and 0.51163, respectively. Caluya showed the highest diversity index of 1.0132, which consisted of 28 species from 13 families and 15 genera, while Bugasong has a relatively low diversity of 0.0486, denoted by 6 species from 4 families and 4 genera. In general, the high variations in the geomorphology of coastal areas in Antique provided a wide range of substrata for colonization of mangroves that contributed to the high species diversity.Item Zooplankton composition, abundance and diversity in selected Municipalities of Negros Occidental and AklanAusan, Aisa Marie U. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)Zooplankton samples were collected last May and June 2014 from 20 stations in the vicinity of Kalibo, Aklan and Pontevedra, San Enrique, and Valladolid, Negros Occidental. Three hundred fifty-three (353) liters of water were filtered per station thru a 5m vertical haul of plankton net with a diameter of 30cm and a mesh size of 20μm. Overall zooplankton densities were higher in Negros Occidental, specifically in Valladolid (D=1915.3 cells/L), than in Kalibo, Aklan (D=7.2 cells/L). On the other hand, zooplankton community was most diverse in Kalibo (H’ = 2.6) compared to Valladolid (H’=1.3), San Enrique (H’=2.1) and Pontevedra (H’=1.8). Jaccard’s similarity index was highest between Pontevedra and San Enrique while lowest between Valladolid and Kalibo. In Kalibo there were four major groups of zooplankton. Most dense of these were the tintinnids (3.9 cells/L) followed by copepods (2.5 cells/L), molluscs (7xlOE-lcells/L) and polychaetes (IxlOE-lcell/L). Among the copepods Subeucalanus was the most abundant zooplankton genus. In Pontevedra and San Enrique, Negros Occidental, copepods were the most abundant group with a mean density of 205.3 cells/L and 312.1 cells/L, respectively. The relative abundance ofAcartia (36.5%) and Longipedia (22.6%) made them the dominant zooplankton genera in Pontevedra and San Enrique, respectively. Like in Kalibo, the tintinnids were also the most abundant group in Valladolid (1879.2 cells/L). Copepods followed with a mean density of 35.7 cells/L, while Polychaetes comprised only 4xlOE-l cells/L. Epiplocylis was the most abundant tintinnid in Valladolid while Xystonella in Kalibo. Varying sampling time within months and day is the possible cause of the differences in zooplankton abundance, composition, and diversity since some zooplankton species undergo diel vertical migration.Item Species composition , abundance and distribution of trees ina 4.3-hectare plot adjacent to the Mat-y gate of the University of the Philippines Visayas Main Campus,Miagao, IloiloAlaban, Annaveve Rose M. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)A 4.3-hectare plot across the UPV tennis court extending to the Mat-y gate of the campus was the area of study. The local names of each tree were identified. The girth- at-breast-height (GBH) and approximate height of trees were also recorded. From the data gathered, the Basal Area, Index of Dominance and Index of Diversity were computed. One thousand one hundred forty-five trees were found in the 4.3-hectare plot comprised of fifteen species of trees commonly known as “Eucalyptus”, “Acacia”, “Kamonsil”, “Narra”, “Mahogany”, “Talisay”, “Payhod”, “Agho”, “Apyan”, “Gmelina”, “Ipil-ipil”, “Bugto-tae”, “Indian Tree”, “Lamnog” and “Tabong”. The value of the Index of Dominance is higher compared to the value of the Index of Diversity, which means that a species is exerting greater influence compared to other species. Eucalyptus is the most dominant tree species in the area of study which is 75.63% of the whole population. The distribution of trees in the 4.3-hectare plot is not random and is mainly influenced by human intervention since it is a secondary forest.Item Phytoplankton assemblages in contrasting seasons in the area of Banate Bay, Iloilo, PhilippinesAlvarez, Rose Ann T. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)Banate Bay in Iloilo is one of the major food and occupation contributors in the Panay Island because of its rich biodiversity. This study investigated the phytoplankton assemblage and their diversity with respect to the contrasting seasons namely; December 2012 and June 2013 on the pre-selected nine (9) stations of the Coastal Ecosystem Conservation and Adaptive Management (CECAM) Project. Physicochemical parameters such as salinity, turbidity, DO, and pH did not display seasonality but total suspended solids (TSS) did, with increased values resulting from run-off from the surrounding watershed and rivers. Principal Component Analysis divided the stations during the two months into groups. Station B3 during June 2013 possessed low salinity level, low turbidity level, low pH level and a very high DO level. While the other stations during June 2013 and all the stations during December 2012 possessed higher salinity levels, higher turbidity levels, higher pH levels and lower DO levels. While the PC2 of PCA divided the stations according to the TSS levels and the temperature. All stations during December 2012 showed characteristics of higher TSS levels and lower temperatures while stations during June 2013 were observed to have low TSS levels and higher temperatures. A total of 86 genera falling under six families were identified from the samples, namely: bacillariophyceae (49 genera), dinophyceae (24 genera), cyanophyceae (6 genera), silicoflagellate (4 genera), chlorophyceae (1 genus), euglenophyceae (1 genus) and Miscellaneous (2 genera). In December 2012, a total of 84 genera were identified and 86 genera in June 2013. The top 10 genera with the highest mean densities were Bacteriastrum, Chaetoceros, Eutintinnus, Guinardia, Leptocylindricus, Lioloma, Protoperidinium, Thallasiothrix and Trichodesmium. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed that water temperature and TSS were the most significant parameters influencing the distribution and seasonal shift in phytoplankton families and genera such as Bacillariophyceae, Others (composed of Euglenophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Myrionecta, and Globigerina), Protoperidinium, and Guinardia. pH and DO had minor influence on phytoplankton distribution. Shannon- Wiener diversity index as a pollution index suggested that the study area was incipiently polluted at stations Bl, B2, and B3 and marginally polluted at Stations B4, B5, GN1, GN2, GS1, and GS2. Despite potential effects of various human activities, the water quality and phytoplankton assemblage of this area has not reached an alarming situation. The current study provides valuable baseline data.Item Physiochemical factors affecting mangrove distribution and occurrence in selected sites in the Province of AntiqueAgapin, Antonio, Jr. D. (Division of Biological Sciences, Bachelor of Science in Biology, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)Mangrove forests are unique inter-tidal ecosystems comprised of taxonomically diverse, salt-tolerant tree and other plant species that are primarily found o.i relatively sheltered coastlines, deltas, estuaries, and lagoons in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The objective of this study is to generally determine the physicochemical factors influencing the distribution and occurrence of mangroves in selected sites in the Province of Antique and to specifically measure selected physicochemical factors influencing the distribution and occurrence per species per municipality and correlate selected physicochemical factors like soil and water salinity, soil and water pH, and soil and water temperature influencing the distribution and occurrence per species per municipality using Pearson Correlation Coefficient. There were 224 plots established in 11 municipalities in the province of Antique. Twenty-five plots were established in Anini-y, 44 in Hamtic, 11 in San Jose, 5 in Belison, 18 in Patnongon, 23 in Bugasong, 11 in Barbaza, 9 in Tibiao, 26 in Culasi, 23 in Pandan, and 29 in Semirara. A total of 27 true mangrove species belonging to 12 families were found in the 11 municipalities of Antique. The 12 families are Family Avicenniaceae represented by Avicennia alba , Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinales, and Avicennia rumphiana', Family Combretaceae represented by Lumnitzera racemosa and Lumnitzera littorea; Family Euphorbiaceae represented by Excoecaria agallocha; Family Lythraceae represented by Pemphis acidula; Family Meliaceae represented by Xylocarpus granatum and Xylocarpus moluccensis; Family Myrsinaceae represented by Aegiceras coniculatum and Aegiceras floridum; Family Myrtaceae represented by Osbornia octodonta; Family Arecaeae (Palmae) represented by Nypa fruticans; Family Rhizophoraceae represented by Bruguiera cylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Bruguiera sexangula, Ceriops decandra, Ceriops tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, and Rhizophora stylosa; Family Rubiaceae represented by Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea; Family Sonneratiaceae presented by Sonneratia alba, Sonneratia caseolaris, Sonneratia ovata; and Family Sterculiaceae represented by Heritiera littoralis. For Soil pH, the highest value of 8.87 was observed in the municipality of Hamtic and the lowest at 6.32 in the municipality of Semirara. Overall mean soil pH was 7.31. For Water pH, the highest value of 8.96 was observed in the municipality of San Jose, and the lowest value of 6.29 in the municipality of Tibiao. Overall mean water pH was 7.23. For salinity, it ranged from 3.1 ppt (Tibiao) to 27.47 (Semirara) and the overall mean was 13.37 ppt For Water Temperature, the highest value of 29.48 °C was observed in Anini-y & the lowest value of 24.74 °C in the municipality of Semirara with an overall mean of 27.40 °C. For Soil Temperature, the highest value of 30.2 °C was observed in the municipality of Belison & the lowest value of 24.97 °C in the municipality of Semirara with an overall mean of 27.50 °C. Among the species present, Aegiceras floridum showed significant correlation with Soil pH (favor low soil pH), water pH ( favor low water pH), salinity ( favor high salinity), soil temperature (favor high soil temperature) and water temperature (low water temperature), A. rumphiana showed significant correlation with water pH (favor low water pH) and soil temperature ( favor low soil temperature), B. cylindrica showed significant correlation with soil pH ( favor high soil pH), C. decandra showed significant correlation with water pH (favor low water pH) and salinity (favor high salinity), L. littorea showed significant correlation with soil pH (favor high soil pH), water pH (favor high water pH), salinity (favor high salinity), soil temperature (favor high soil temperature) and water temperature (favor high water temperature), O. octodonta showed significant correlation with soil pH (favor high soil pH), water pH (favor low water pH), salinity ( favor low salinity), soil temperature (favor high soil temperature) and water temperature (favor low water temperature), S. caseolaris showed significant correlation with water pH (favor low water pH), salinity (favor low salinity), soil temperature (favor low soil temperature) and water temperature (favor low water temperature) and S. ovata showed significant correlation with soil pH ( low soil pH), salinity (favor low salinity) and water temperature (favor low water temperature). Species like A. corniculatum, A. alba, A. marina, B. sexxangula, E agallocha, H. littoralis, L racemosa, N. fruticans, R apiculata, R mucronata, R stylosa, S. alba, X. granatum and X. moluccencis showed wide tolerance (no correlation) in all physicochemical factors (Soil Salinity, Water pH, Soil pH, Soil Temperature and Water Temperature).
