International remittances on health expenditures of Filipino households
Braña, Juan Gabriel P.; Ramirez, Michael Benjamin S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-06)
International remittances have become a substantial source of income for recipient households, which are utilized to finance different household expenditures such as consumption expenditures and investments. Previous studies in other countries have determined the impacts of international remittance on households' different expenditure types, but studies on its effect on health expenditures are limited. This study analyzed the marginal effects of international remittances on Filipino households’ health expenditure and its types - medical products, outpatient medical services, and hospital in-patient services, utilizing the 2018 Family and Income Expenditure Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority. Using the ordinary least squares regression method, the researchers find a positive significant effect of international remittances on household health expenditure and its types. A one PHP increase in international remittances significantly increases the total medical care of a household by 0.026 PHP, the medical products expenditure of a household by 0.014 PHP, the outpatient medical services expenditure of a household by 0.005 PHP, and the hospital in-patient services expenditure of a household by 0.007 PHP. However, the effects of international remittances on Filipino households' health expenditures vary across regions.

Value chain analysis of Lampirong (Placuna placenta) in Oton, Iloilo
Bito-on, Edrian T.; Haro, Errielle Nicole M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-06)
Lampirong (Placuna placenta) is a highly valued bivalve in the Philippines due to its economic value. It was once abundant in Oton and was overexploited, leading to its stock depletion. Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s (SEAFDEC) efforts to enhance the stock in Oton resulted in the resurgence of lampirong stock and industry. The lack of transparency in the lampirong industry and studies on the linkages between the actors in the lampirong business have gotten little to no attention following the resurgence of lampirong and the recovery of the shell craft industry after the depletion. A Value Chain Analysis (VCA) was conducted to evaluate the overall performance of the local lampirong industry following the stock enhancement. Using an interview schedule, the researchers gathered primary data from a total of 20 study participants. They were interviewed in the month of May and were grouped according to the tasks they carried out. The biggest player of the chain turned out to be the Institutional Buyers as they are the bulk buyers and sellers of lampirong in the market. The industry resembles a competitive market as the majority of participants were price takers and the products are homogenous. As the lampirong transforms from raw to processed forms, its net added value increases as it goes through the various actors. Lampirong processing incurred the highest cost but also generated the highest value-added. Diving lampirong was performed by men while processing and trading were dominated by women.

Economics of different alternative livelihood projects in Southern Municipalities of Iloilo
Besana, Nikkei M.; Cang, Marianne S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
Poverty incidence in the Philippines is continuously increasing. In line with this the government seeks for opportunities for poverty alleviation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in cooperation with the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV) offered different alternative livelihood projects in southern municipalities of Iloilo namely: Tigbauan (shrimp paste making), Miag-ao (salt making) and San Joaquin (fish sauce making). The study described the socio- demographic profiles of the beneficiaries of the projects along with the problems encountered during and after the project implementation. The production processes were also described along with the costs of production. Revenues and profit were derived based on the existing price of the product in the market. Private cost was identified from first up to fourth liquidations. Profit was calculated in every livelihood project and accounted to 728.34 Php for shrimp paste making in Tigbauan, 2,205.54 for salt making Php in Miagao and 1,570 Php for fish sauce making in San Joaquin per individual. Payback period derived was 1.07 that means the initial investment will be recovered in no less than a year. Return on investment was 0.93, which implies that for every peso invested, 1.14 Php returns to the investment

The socio-economic factors that affect the in-migration decision of street vendors in downtown Iloilo City
Bebis, Mary Grace C.; Benetiz, Earl Cexanne B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-03)
The lack of employment opportunities and poverty encourages migration from the rural to urban areas. This study aimed to determine the socio-economic factors that affect the in-migration decision of street vendors in downtown Iloilo City. The data were gathered through purposive sampling of sixty street vendors. The results indicated that the respondents main reason for migrating is the perceived availability of job opportunities in the city. However, information asymmetry, disproved this notion. Age is the only significant factor which contributed in migration decision in this study. The younger an individual is, the higher is the tendency to migrate. Currently, there are no local policies geared towards the welfare of the street vendors. It is highly recommended that the street vendors should be relocated at one place and development of the neighboring towns of Iloilo City be effected to curb the influx of in- migration.

Economic analysis of rice farming under differential tenurial arrangements in Sibalom, Antique
Basañes, Lorvi Ann A.; Rondrique, Clyde G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-03)
This study was undertaken in order to acquire informations about the effects of tenurial arrangments on the productivity and profitability of rice farms in Sibalom, Antique, from the operators view point. The study found out that the practices of rice farms did not essentially vary among farms of different tenure arrangements, though some slight differences had been discovered. Furthermore, it was also discovered that tenurial arrangement greatly affected the distribution of gains from farming. Though share-tenanted farms proved to be the most profitable from the operators point of view, the conpensation that the operators received were quite inadequate to compensate the cost in using owned inputs. Moreover, other tenurial arrangements, leasehold and owner-operated, revealed to be less profitable than the one mentioned earlier. In terms of its effect on productivity, tenurial arrangements were found to explain an insignificant variation in the farms output. The study concluded that tenurial arrangements did really have a significant effect on productivity and the production practices of rice farmers, though in the profitability side, it proved to be otherwise. Of the problems presented, the emergence of rats and the golden kuhol pestilence in the rice fields were pointed out as the primary reasons for the decline in the productivity of rice farms in Sibalom, Antique. Aside from the propagation of government support programs and the transformation and empowerment of rice farmer cooperatives, the study also recommended that a closer look on share-tenancy must be done by the goverment so as to eliminate its equity undesirability, instead of outlawing the said tenurial arrangement which proved, in this study, to be the most efficient tenurial arrangement in rice farming.

Marketing of Pina fiber in Balete, Aklan
Barrios, Jerson T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1995-12-01)
This study describes and analyses the different marketing channels, functions, costs, margins, and the different problems encountered by both producers of pina and middlemen of pina fiber in Balete, Aklan. Of the four barangay sampled, primary data were obtained from ten (10) producers who were asked about their recent halved, and 34 middlemen were consequently interviewed based on their last week’s operations. Results of the study show that out of the 40.200 pina leaves harvested by producers, scrapers absorbed the bulk or 69.71 %(24,900), while the legist fraction of .99% was token by producer-scrapers-trader. Highest prices paid for pina leaves at P0.35 was accorded by producer-scrapper-knotter while scraper-knotter offered the least price at P.25. Despite of the five marketing activities performed, and corresponding costs on marketing Investments, producers still incurred positive financial net farm price of P.217. By marketing functions, seven types of middlemen were observed, namely: scrapers, producer-scrapers, scraper-knotters, producer-scraper-knotter, knotters, producer-scraper-trader, and traders—who essentially perform an overlap of functions. Though all types of middlemen incurred positive gross margin, not everyone experienced positive not margins and net returns. With the bulk of transactions disposed by traders (1,668.125 leaves) and producer-scraper trader (2,000 leaves), these two types of middlemen received positive financial net margins and returns. Of the different marketing problems cited, majority the majority of producers and middlemen were unanimous in pointing at low price of the product as their biggest constraint Other than the need to increase the price, organizing a cooperative and support from the local government, this study suggests, that due to foe duplication of function among types of middlemen, specialization on a particular function (e.g, scraper or knotter— alone) is a must in order to curb the circuitous and dragging flow of the product and lessen costs on labor.

Economic cost of dengue fever treatment in Miagao, Iloilo
Banehit, Gracesel Faith D.; Napulan, Macie Carlyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
Dengue, the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral infection in the world, has caused many deaths in the Philippines. The municipality of Miagao, Iloilo Province, has recorded a high number of dengue cases in recent years. This study determined the economic cost of dengue fever treatment among affected households and patients with dengue in 2016 in Miagao. The study used a cross-sectional data collected from 169 interviews with the study participants for 201 dengue patients from 62 barangays in Miagao in February to April 2017. The study identified, measured, and valued the various costs related to dengue fever treatment. Results showed that the total economic cost for home-treated patients averaged at Pl2,522.08 for both the patient and the caregiver (household), with the following breakdown: P5,068.82 for monetary costs (direct medical and non-medical costs) and P7,453.26 as opportunity cost. For those who were admitted in the hospital, the total economic cost averaged at P22,213.31 with the following breakdown: P9,504.77 for monetary costs and P12,708.54 for opportunity cost. As expected, patients treated at home had lower costs both in monetary and nonmonetary aspects compared to those confined in the hospital. Although the majority of the study participants are knowledgeable about dengue, it is still necessary to increase their awareness of dengue prevention in order to prevent dengue treatment costs for the households. The local government must also strengthen the implementation of its existing dengue prevention policies and programs to mobilize cooperation and involvement of the people in dengue prevention.

Income an employment structure of households in the coastal barangays of Miagao, Iloilo
Bacalocos, Kezzie Lyn R.; Camit, Rizalee L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)
This paper was designed to describe the income and employment structure of the households in the coastal barangays of Miagao, Iloilo. Data were gathered through face- to-face interviews with 303 household heads from the six barangays identified by the Municipal Planning and Development Office. There were a total of 1,867 household members, where 1,086 belonged to the working age group. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, averages and percentages. Results showed that despite being near the sea, the households were not dependent on it for their income and employment. The proportion of professionals was low. Most household members in working age worked in the past in non — professional jobs, mostly in contractual terms. Similarly, most were currently employed in skill-related jobs such as in construction and mechanics. The proportion of females out of work is greater than the males. The monthly household income ranged between 0 to Phpl6, 300. The majority of households have an average income of P7, 343.19. Income diversification program is needed in the area. The women who are willing to work can be targeted for livelihood program and skills training. Information on jobs and skills training available must effectively disseminated in the barangays.

Socio-economic impact of TV product advertisements to the taste and preference and level of concumption of University of the Philippines-Visayas' College of Arts and Sciences' students
Aspiras, Marvin Arcangel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-03)
The principal purpose of this paper is to uncover the advertising-consumption relationship. In view of this, the following research objectives were pursued: (1) determination of the level of exposure, awareness and knowledge of college students towards TV product advertisements, (2) identification of the different TV product advertisements’ elements affecting the taste and preference of college students, (3) determination of the effects of TV product advertisements to the taste and preference of college students, (4) verification if TV product advertisement is a significant factor affecting the level of consumption of college students and (5) identification of other significant factors affecting the consumption levels of college students. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed through logistic and linear regression method. The study was carried out by administering questionnaires among 120 college students. The researcher found out that the respondents generally have low exposure but relatively high level of awareness and knowledge to TV products advertisements. Moreover, the researcher found out that storyline/theme, actor/actress/models and punch line/dialogue ranked the first three highly significant elements affecting the respondents taste and preference. Consequently, the researcher determined that an increase in the level of awareness and knowledge of the respondents increases their taste and preference increases as well. Lastly, by logistic regression the researcher found out that for every unit increase in the number of hours of watching TV, the chance of consuming toothpaste or shampoo is increased by 615.2%. On the other hand, by linear regression, taste and preference was found to be significantly affecting consumption both for advertised shampoo and toothpaste products.
