The agricultural education outreach project in Aklan: Barangay Sibalew, Banga
Bautista, Reynold R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)
This study uses the concept of agricultural extension as a catalyst of change for rural development. Suffice it to say, the objective of agricultural extension is to provide the rural people the appropriate information, technology and values to make them self-reliant in the context of their own environment. However, the realisation of this goal is dependent on the extent of acceptance and participation of the rural people themselves. In this study, the Aklan Agricultural College-Agricultural Education Outreach Project in Aklan is supposed to bring self- reliance among the farmers of barangay Sibalew, Bangs by effective transfer of appropriate technology. Based on the principles of extension service, it has been determined that the A.E.0.p project in Sibalew, particularly its economic and social services, has been instrumental in improving the productivity and income and broadly, the social and economic aspects or the farmers life. Needless to say, the A.E.0.P-introduced technologies have been embraced by the majority of farmers in the barangay--which exemplifies the effectiveness of the A.E.O.P project.

Sa ginhalinan it Akean: A postcolonial analysis on the Talibong Tradition of the Taong Labas of the Municipalities of Libacao, Madalag, and Malinao, in the province of Aklan
Bautista, Theodore Ricardo R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)
The Talibong is a fighting bolo of the Panay Bukidnon of the Central Panay mountain range, but is also common among the lowland agricultural communities in Aklan. Often characterized by carvings on its hilt and ornaments such as old coins embedded on its sheath, the Talibong is part of the daily attire of the Akeanon Bukidnon who live in the interiors of Libacao, Madalag, and Malinao; a hinterland people who, historically, have been ‘othered’ by the predominantly Christian lowlanders and branded with derogatory terms such as buyongs (savages/bandits), buki (rustic/uneducated), or mundos (of the mountains). As of the present, the Province of Aklan has made the Talibong into one of the key symbols of Akeanon cultural heritage - with it now being displayed in the offices of local government officials and representing the province in digital posters promoting Akeanon culture for ecotourism. By viewing the history of upland-lowland relations in the province through Francis Gealogo’s concept of the Taong Labas and Gayatri Spivak’s theory of ‘othering’, this thesis looks into how these hinterland communities were ‘othered’ during the colonial period up to contemporary times; identifying how the Talibong had once become a defining representation of a perceived savagery, backwardness, and culture of violence ascribed to these communities by those in the town centers. With the use of archival sources pertaining to accounts of these hinterland peoples in the late 19th century up to the present and key informant interviews with elders from the town centers and the very cultural bearers of the tradition, this thesis points out that the hinterland peoples of the interiors of Libacao, Madalag, and Malinao are historically the Taong Labas of Aklan, whose Talibong tradition has been appropriated by the centers, in their bid to construct a genuine local identity built upon the notion of indigeneity.

Decision making in the practice of birth control in a rural community
Barrios, Ritchie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)
This is a study on the decision-making pattern of couples in the use of birth control in a rural community. The study sought to determine: 1. Who the decision-maker is in the couple structure: 2. how the decision to practice was reached by them and 3. what are the basis for the choice of a particular birth control method. Based on the findings it was concluded that for the couples in Brgy. Tuburan, Pototan, Iloilo it was both the husband and the wife who decided that they will practice birth control. This is contrary to the popular notion that it is the husband who decides. It was also found out that the midwife who was at the same time the family planning implementor, played a major role in the decision to practice birth control. Having reached the decision to practice birth control, certain considerations like convenience, effectiveness, no side effects, etc. were taken by the couples in the selection of the method to adopt. It was however found out that the final choice of the method to be used was made by the family planning implementor. It is interesting to note, however, that in the barangay only forty-one couples out of the one hundred seventy have or are practicing birth control. This is attributed to the fact that the family planning implementors failed to get the message across to a larger audience. The mothers' class which was used as a strategy to attract couples to take interest in family planning failed to reach large segment of the population.

Bantigue, Aleli (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)
This study was undertaken to identify the areas of household decision-making where married women of nuclear families participate. The variables involved in this study were 'educational attainment of women, ''their income, and the different areas of household decision-making. The primary instrument used in this study was an interview schedule to gather necessary data. The barangay of Mat-y, Miag-ao, Iloilo, was chosen as the research site. The respondents of the study are 59 married women of nuclear families as 50% sample. A random sampling method was employed. The chi-square test was utilised primarily in data analysis to determine the presence ofa relationship between variables. More so, simple frequency and percentage counts were employed to make the presentation of results comprehensible. With the use of frequency and percentages, it was found out that married women are involved in every area of decision-making in the household, namely financial-economic and socio-moral concerns. in financial-economic areas, women are more involved most particularly inhousehold budgeting of everyday expenses. In sociomoral concerns, they are most involved specifically in the care of children. Likewise, the results of the chi-square test showed that no relationship is evident between educational attainment and women’s involvement in the decision—making process in both financial-economic and socio-moral related areas, Furthermore, as to income as the other variable, two decision-areas were found to be affected by income. These were under the financial-economic related aspects of decision- mooting specifically in borrowing of money and paying of loans or credits, moreover, the other decision areas tested showed no relationship between income and women’s participation in the decision-making process.

Avelino, Christine Marie F.; Zaspa, Mariz Gleah Faith Z. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)
In this current time, wherein body appearance is given much importance, it seems that women are not the only one concerned about their physical appearance. There is now an increasing trend of men becoming concerned about their body appearance. This study focused on describing how male gym-goers understand their ideal body images, the influences that shape their ideal body images, and experiences in achieving their ideal body. The researchers have conducted in-depth interviews with free response interview guide questions for five male gym goers in Iloilo City. All the data collected are analyzed using the theory of Hegemonic Masculinity. The results showed that the participants’ concept of the ideal body is a body image that people want to achieve. It also showed that society, media, and family had little or no influence meanwhile friends have the greatest influence in the construction of the ideal body. The study also revealed that aside from going to the gym they have done other things in order to achieve then- ideal bodies such as dieting, taking supplements, doing other forms of exercises, changing their sleeping patterns, and researching on what will help them achieve then- ideal body. In the analysis of the themes, it was found out that three out of four tenets of hegemonic masculinity were present in the construction of ideal body images of the participants. The three tenets are (1) refusal of anything feminine, which includes feminine traits like vulnerability (2) the continuous aim for fame, success and social status (3) being independent, confident, tough and strong.
