    Continuity and change: A generational comparison of the social representations of Martial Law in the Philippines (1972-1986)

    A nation’s understanding of past events has implications on its national identity since it provides a point of commonality and continuation especially for nationally significant events. For the Philippines, this would be the Martial Law Period (1972-1986). Social psychological inquiries into the representation of military7 dictatorship were explored through the construct of collective memories, and previous studies on the representations of history have found that they arc aligned with Mannheim’s theory of generational effects. The current study intended to explore the generational differences in the social representations of Martial Law in the Philippines using a structural approach to Moscovici’s Social Representation Theory. Employing a mixed-method approach, this study made use of the Hierarchical Evocation Model to analyze the data collected. The findings of this study show that there is both continuity and change in the social representations of the two generational cohorts who experienced and did not experience living through the Martial Law Period. The social representations of both cohorts were grounded on concepts like politics, power, and social values such as human rights and freedom. One difference was how their social representations of the Martial Law Period were structured since the younger cohort lacked a central core, indicating a gradual change of social representations of the period over time. The way the period was objectified also differed, as the older cohort mentioned a larger selection of socio-economic changes during the period, and the younger cohort mentioned concepts of democracy and the EDSA Revolution. This study supports the generational effects conceptualized by Mannheim (1952), reflects the convergence of social representations of two generations through time as observed by Montiel (2010), and may be useful in identifying the changes in the social representations of the Martial Law Period because of historical distortion.

    Emotion work and its relation to job burnout and job satisfaction among call center agents in Iloilo City

    The current study aimed to describe the level of emotion work among call center agents in Iloilo city including the differences in their levels of emotion work between sex groups and types of call center work. It also attempted to show the relationship of emotion work to job burnout and job satisfaction. The design of the study was descriptive-correlational. Analyses were based on a sample of thirty available male and female (30) inbound and outbound call center agents from selected call centers in Iloilo city. Three data gathering instruments were used in this study, namely: Emotional Labour Scale (ELS), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). Statistical tools employed in the study were means for descriptive analysis, Mann - Whitney U for tests of difference and Spearman’s rho for correlations. Level of significance was set at 0.05 for both tests. The findings revealed that call center agents occasionally have intense experience of emotion work, whereas they sometimes experience a variety of emotion work. Moreover, they used deep acting regulation of emotion more compared to surface acting . Emotion work is correlated with job satisfaction while no relationship was found between emotion work and job burnout. Significant differences in the levels of emotion work existed both for groups based on sex and type of work.

    Disorientation and queering action in distance education: The queer lived experiences of the queer Filipino teacher

    Queer studies highlight that beyond the idea of gender and sexuality, queerness branches through a vast field of disciplines and focus, urging scholarly interest towards the queer phenomenological question regarding the peculiar and confusing experiences an individual acquires when occupying a particular space as well as the actions they do in a space. Utilizing Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology (2006) as the theoretical anchor for this inquiry, this study explored queer lived experiences through the experiences of disorientation and the queering actions of queer Filipino teachers; specifically, the mechanisms, the experiences, and the outcomes as queer Filipino teachers become challenged by the normativity of distance education, and how they addressed the challenges they experienced from the disorientation. Through interviews with eight (8) self-identified queer DepEd High School teachers from the provinces of Antique and Capiz from ages 24 to 42, this study identified that in the context of distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic, queer Filipino teachers experience disorientation through the challenges brought about by norms in the learning setup that prescribes specific actions, practices and strategies to avoid and to prioritize. As they reflect on their disorienting experiences, the queer Filipino teacher recognizes a need to change their perspective and pedagogies to orient themselves in the space of distance education. This leads them to enact queering actions through a pedagogical performance of going beyond what are obligated and expected of them, as informed by their identities as queer people, as teachers, and as queer teachers.

    Sexual self-scheme and sexual aggrression of male readers of Lad magazine

    This study was conducted to find out the impact of reading lad magazines on the sexual self-schema and sexual aggression in men. One hundred men of fifty readers and fifty non-readers of lad magazines, from a male dominated institution, 18 to 30 years old served as participants of this study. A survey was conducted and four (4) instruments were used to measure the readership, sexual self-schema, and sexual aggression of men. The design of this study was correlational. To show the relationship between the variables, data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational statistic. The results of this research show that readership of lad magazines is associated with high sexual self-schema in the study sample and the likelihood of being sexually aggressive in comparison to non-readers. Men learned information regarding sex through lad magazines. These magazines also present women in a sexually arousing manner through their pictures and articles. Men's lifestyle was also affected by their readership of lad magazines.

    Work-family conflict, stress, and satisfaction among married female public elementary teachers

    This is a descriptive and correlational study which sought to explore the relationship of work-family conflict, stress and satisfaction among the respondents. Sixty-two (62) married female public elementary teachers participated in the study. Survey questionnaires were given to gather data about the studied variables. Results of the study showed that respondents are generally experiencing high level of work-family conflict and work-related stress but with low level of family-related stress. In general, respondents have positive attitude towards their job, experience less marital distress and have high level of life satisfaction. Relationships between these studied variables were also examined

    Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City: Their personal well-being, sense of national identity, and views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues

    This research examined the personal well-being, sense of national identity, and views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues of Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City. Twenty-one (21) males and twelve (12) females, 13-27 years of age, unmarried, and of Maranao descent participated in this research. Scales were used to rate the respondents' personal well-being and for general ethnicity. A questionnaire for pride in being Filipino used to determine their sense of national identity, and an open-ended questionnaire to determine their views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues. It was found out that the Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City have high level personal well-being where most respondents showed high scores in self-esteem, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with life. Most of the respondents also showed strong national identity. Respondents had held different views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues. While 76% do not support the terrorists group, others (45%) do not support the man-hunt against it. and that 48% believe that the 9/11 event was plain terrorism.

    Perception of Ilonggo college students on sexual agression

    This study explored the perception of Ilonggo college students on sexual aggression. This was approached with the attempt to generate an Ilonggo youth culture definition and concept of sexual aggression. Four focus group discussions were conducted among varied gender groups (males, females, gays and lesbians). A total of 22 participants between 17-21 years old, from different colleges and universities in Iloilo and were either experienced in dating relationships or not. Results showed that sexual aggression, for these Ilonggo college students, is naturally occuring in dating relationships. There are specific behaviors enacted as sexual aggression in conducive environments, and that coercion is part of the sex play in which one must initiate and the recipient will follow whether he/she likes it or not. There are also gender differences and specific Filipino traits in determining perceived susceptibility to sexual aggression.

    Verbal exhortation and modeling: Their effects on the degree on conformity

    The research experiment was aimed to determine whether verbal exhortation and modeling had an effect on conformity in implementing rules and regulations. The sample of the research experiment involved fourth year students from Oton National High School. Eighty participants (n=80), 40 males and 40 females, were selected and assigned to the four experimental conditions and received appropriate experimental treatment. Conformity was measured by the number of students who took off their shoes before entering the library. After the analysis of the data, this experimental study revealed that there was a significant relationship between the variables of modeling and verbal exhortation, x2= 4.55 (df=l), p < .05 . Regardless of the presence or absence of a model, conformity was higher among participants who were subjected to verbal exhortation than those who did not receive verbal exhortation

    Dominant personality characteristics of Roxas City elective office aspirants and their reasons for candidacy

    This is a study on the personality characteristics of City political office aspirants. This was conducted to identify the dominant personality characteristics of Roxas City political office aspirants, to identify their dominant personality characteristics in relation to the position they aspire for, and to determine the reason for fielding themselves to the position they aspire for. The study hypothesizes that there is no significant difference in the dominant personality characteristics of the Roxas City elective office aspirants in relation to the elective positions aspired for. Through the use of the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, the dominant personality characteristics of the respondents were identified as (by ranking): nurturance succcorance, affiliation, autonomy, exhibition, deference, abasements, and aggression. The findings are supportive of the hypothesis. Through the use of an open-ended questionnaire, the reasons for candidacy of the respondents was determined. Serving the people of Roxas City has the most responses. Consistency on the response was noted on the questions on the factors that made them decide to run, the importance, and significance of their candidacy. The study suggests the use of etic and emic approach to further establish the personality characteristics of the Roxas City elective office aspirants.

    The relationship of temperament, mindfulness attention and self-regulating behavior of on-line computer gamers in Iloilo City

    The study had 42 respondents, all of whom are online computer gamers aged 15 to 27 who play at least 20 hours a week. Three tests were administered among the participants, namely the Keirsey Temperament Sorter (KTS), the Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ), and Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), to find out their Temperament type, their level of Self-Regulating behavior and their level of Mindfulness Attention. Results of the scores from the KTS show that online computer gamers are mostly Artisan type or can be classified as such (64.2%). A majority of low scores among the respondents in the SRQ show the respondents having low self-regulating behavior (54.8%). And the average mean scores (3.53) in the MAAS show that gamers have an average level of mindfulness attention. The correlation between Self-Regulation and Mindfulness Attention is 0.053; The correlation between Mindfulness Attention and Temperament is 0.076; And the correlation between Temperament and Mindfulness Attention is -0.168. The results show that all the variables are weakly correlated with each other.
