Sexual politics in selected Cuyunon folk songs
Cabrestante, Ma. Anthea A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-12)
The purpose of this study is to examine the sexual political condition of Cuyunon women as portrayed in the folk songs of Cuyo, Palawan. As one of the studies that examine Philippine folk literature using a feminist lens, this study seeks to uncover how deeply ingrained the patriarchal norms and values are in the Cuyunon and Palaweño society through a sexual political analysis of the Cuyunon folk songs. The analysis of the texts has two parts: the first part analyzes the binary oppositions of gender roles present in the songs, and the second part analyzes the sexual politics in the songs. After the analysis of the songs, it is found out that most of the songs portray traditional gender roles for men and women, and that the perpetuation of gender roles and stereotypes play a big role in the oppression of women. This study has concluded that according to the Cuyunon folk songs. Cuyunon women are only temporarily empowered during the courtship phase, but they still occupy an inferior position in the sexual politics of their society. Furthermore, this study has also concluded that aside from reflecting the patriarchal culture of the Cuyunon society, the Cuyunon folk songs are tools for the propagation and normalization of patriarchal culture as they are sang and heard again and again.

Resident's assessment of life in Asilo de Molo
Cabrias, Ruby Daryl B.; Cortes, Rossan F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
There is an increasing number of elderly living in institutions today. This is due to the fact that they are abandoned or don’t have a family to take care of them. As such, the researchers are interested to study how the elderly assess their life inside the institution. The primary aim of the study is to know the elderlies’ assessment of life in Asilo de Molo. The other objectives of the study are: (1) Describe the organizational structure of Asilo de Molo; (2) Know the profile of the elderly residents in Asilo de Molo; (3) Determine whether elderlies’ personal assessment of life in Asilo de Molo varies with the means by which they were admitted in the institution. The study was conducted from August to December 2005 in Asilo de Molo- a home for the aged located at Avanceña Street, Iloilo City. Data was collected using the survey method. Twenty elderly residents of Asilo de Molo ages 60 years old and over were interviewed using the interview schedule. The respondents are either referred to or personally decided to stay in Asilo de Molo. Key informant interview was also used to gather data. The researchers interviewed the staff to ask about the organizational structure of the institution and the roles and responsibilities of those who compose it, the number of elderly residents and their socio- demographic profile and the criteria and process of admission to Asilo de Molo. The organizational structure of Asilo de Molo is composed of the Board of Trustees, the Administrator, the Administrative Council and the five Coordinators namely: the Pastoral Ministry Coordinator, Social Service Coordinator, Residential Care Coordinator, Administrative Service Coordinator and the Marillac Renewal Center Coordinator. The survey reveals that most residents of Asilo de Molo have the age between 60 years old and 85 years old. They are mostly women. Most of them are also single or widowed who have no immediate family member to take care of them. The results also show that residents who either personally decide or referred to stay in Asilo de Molo are happy and contented with their life. Even though some referred residents are lonely and want to leave the place, many want to spend the rest of their lives inside the institution. The researchers seek to recommend that more studies about the elderly be done since there are only few researches pertaining to them. Spending more time with the elderly and interviews with the staffs can lead to better understanding of the study.

Cabualan, Riza Mae; Lamis, Jira Ela Margarette P.; Medina, Inna Erika E. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
Television political advertisement is the primary means of modern political campaign to communicate with their potential voters. Hence, modern political advertisements are driven with marketing strategies that made a major impact on the outcome of individual election. But scholars find it difficult to understand the effect and effectiveness of these communications and at the same time the persuasive tool being used. This study aims to answer what are the most prominent and the least framing categories used in presidential, vice presidential and senatorial candidates in 2016 television political campaign per position, and when taken as a whole, their attributed significance and implications in the Philippine Political System. It analyzed a total of 21 political campaign ads using the four categories: Emotion, Persuasion, Factual claims and Cinematic style. The study utilized the framing theory under the Agenda Setting by Maxwell McCombs and Donald. Moreover, the study found out that the most prominent category was Emotion. While the least framing category recorded was the category of Factual claims. To further analyze the result, the researchers delve into the Filipino psyche. After a thorough analysis it was found out that Filipinos prefer image over substance, on personality over issues and that media crafted the way it appeals to them

An analysis of the factors affecting women's decision to participate in the informal sector of Iloilo City
Cabrera, Ma. Luz Sophia L.; Gonzaga, Lenny S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)
The study looked into the factors affecting women’s decision to participate in either the informal or the formal sector in the City Proper district of Iloilo City. The study has 126 respondents who were randomly chosen from the four barangays of Iloilo City proper namely; General Hughes, Ortiz, Rizal Pala-Pala I, and Rizal Pala- Pala II. Fifty percent of the respondents were women who are working in the informal sector as they are the focus of the study. The other half of the respondents is the women working in the formal sector of the economy. The dependent variable is a dichotomous variable assuming the value of 1 if the respondent prefers working in the informal sector and 0 if otherwise. The independent variable identified for the study are the: age of the respondent, number of years in school, number of children below 7 years of age in the household, civil status, household size, status in the household, household annual income, respondent’s other sources of income. The equation was estimated using binary logistic regression. Multivariate analysis revealed that age of respondent, number of years schooling, number of children below 7 years of age in the household and the status in household are significant within the 5% level of significance. Moreover, the chi- square value of 40.88 which is also significant at 5% level shows that the model is significant in determining the factors affecting the decision to participate in either the informal or the formal sector.

Buang, abno, kulang-kulang: Social representations of mental illness
Cabrias, Xenia Monica B. (Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)
Using the structural approach to the study of Social Representations, my research unraveled professional and lay understandings of mental illness. I also explored how social representations function as knowledge, orientation justification, and identity. I collected questionnaire data from 107 mental health service providers and 111 lay residents from four out of five districts of Iloilo province. Abric’s (2008) Hierarchical Evocation Method was used as methodological framework. My findings show that both groups align in their central understanding that mental illness is a neuropsychological disorder. My findings further suggest that both groups’ internal organization fuse into a global organization of meanings. Furthermore, both groups have a broader understanding that mental illness is both a societal and an individual affliction.

Sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbians
Cabungcal, Kristine Marie C.; Cebrian, Veah Marie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)
This study described the sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbians. Eight respondents (6 tomboys; 2 lesbians) participated in this study. The tomboys were found to assume more of a masculine role, while lesbians the feminine role. Questionnaires were utilized to describe gender identity and coming out. Also, two Likert types of scales by John Mohr that is Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Identity Scale and Outness Inventory were used. One-one-one interview with the respondents was also conducted to further substantiate what it is being a tomboy or n.lesbian. Results showed that a greater number of respondents (50%) had experienced sexual identity confusion during their elementary years. The same percentage of respondents also reported that it was at the age of 15 that they first realized that they were homosexuals. All of the respondents are clear of their sexual identity and have fully accepted themselves. The respondents were open to their friends. While open to their friends, they remain to be closeted at home due to the stigma that is attached by their family members to tomboys and lesbians.

Caburlan, Nesgen Rhea C.; Magbanua, Ma. Edilyn (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)
This paper looks at the different factors influencing leadership styles between first and second generation local political leaders in eight municipalities of Antique (Belison, Barbaza, Bugasong, Hamtic, Patnongon, San Jose, Sibalom and Tibiao) from 2010. By examining the results from the survey conducted, the researchers were able to identify the differences of leadership styles employed by these leaders and the subcategory on generational differences they belong to. Most of the leaders belong to the first generation, have held elective office previously and have no family members also in politics. Majority of the local political leaders in the selected municipalities rate themselves as charismatic type of leaders. The self-rating is consistent with those of their subordinates suggesting strong parallels in the depiction of leadership.

Ilonggo's perception on the use of Hiligaynon on FM radio
Cabral, Janielle Ann; Lilia, Jun Alden P. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03-28)
This study was conducted to determine the perception of Ilonggos on the use of Hiligaynon on FM radio. The results are aimed at helping program managers to understand both the advantages and disadvantages of using Hiligaynon as medium of communication on FM radio. Purposive sampling is used to select 89 respondents, coming from any of the six districts in Iloilo city. A self-administered questionnaire is designed to gather data from the respondents aged 16 to 70. In this study, most of the respondents are female and most have achieved college education. The research findings indicate that almost all of the respondents’ prefer to listen to Love radio than any other FM stations in Iloilo city. Almost all of the respondents are native Hiligaynon speakers. Most of the respondents have been listening to radio everyday for more than three years. Entertainment is their major reason for listening to FM radio. Hiligaynon is also the main and often used language of the stations they listen to. Despite their low knowledge on the existence of an FM station that uses English as its medium of communication, the respondents say they will still listen if English would be the main language of FM radio. The common reason for liking the Hiligaynon as medium of communication on radio is simply because it is their native language, it is easy for them to understand the messages and it is more entertaining to them. The researchers find a need to study more about how Hiligaynon as medium of communication on FM radio is used in terms of its content, and how the talents communicate using the local language. Future research should focus more on the psychographic background of the respondents. Also, similar studies should be conducted to determine if there are any positive or negative effects or influences on the use of Hiligaynon on FM radio.

The effect of perceiver's gender and masculinity on male masculinity performing female streotypic roles
Cabrera, Gresilita Liza B.; Ochon, Maybelle Lalaine T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-10)
This study was designed to examine the effects of perceiver’s gender and masculinity cues on male masculinity performing female stereotypic roles. 60 participants consisting of thirty males and thirty females, were randomly selected and assigned to four treatment groups. The groups had been assessed using the Instrument which comprises three descriptions with five items for the first description and 10 items for both the second and third descriptions. A 2x2 factorial design and two-way between ANOVA were used with a 0.05 significance level. The results showed that perceiver’s gender did not affect perception but masculinity cues yielded a considerable mark. Both male and female responded remarkably on descriptions with high masculinity cues only. The results further indicated that there is no interaction between the two independent variables.

A comparative study on the perceived work stress, work-related stressors, and coping strategies of fish vendors in Antique
Cabigunda, Greshanne J.; Moquera, Mabelle M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-07)
Fish vending is a common source of income in Antique, Philippines. Fish vendors are classified into two vendor groups: formal vendors who sell inside public markets and informal vendors who sell their products on the streets. Research shows that these groups encounter varied work experiences given their differing working conditions. However, existing research is not enough to describe their stressful work experiences as well as their coping strategies. Thus, this research study aimed to describe and compare the work-related stress of fish vendor groups in Antique and how they cope with it. To address these, a convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. A total of 40 fish vendors with a mean age of 44.70 years, classified as formal (20) and informal (20), served as respondents. Data were gathered using a one-on-one interview with a question guide and a modified survey instrument for levels of perceived work stress (LPWS). Mann-Whitney U analysis revealed no significant difference between the overall LPWS of both groups (W= 4272.50, p>0.05). However, per dimension analysis of results showed a significant difference in the physical work environment dimension (W= 85.50, p<0.001). Conceptual content analysis also indicated that work-related stressors and coping strategies are relatively different between vendor groups and across dimensions. The findings of this research suggest that the physical work environment is a significant dimension that differentiates fish vendor groups’ levels and sources of work stress. Moreover, findings imply that social resources, especially among co-vendors, reduce LPWS.
