A comparative study on the perceived work stress, work-related stressors, and coping strategies of fish vendors in Antique
Cabigunda, Greshanne J.; Moquera, Mabelle M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-07)
Fish vending is a common source of income in Antique, Philippines. Fish vendors are classified into two vendor groups: formal vendors who sell inside public markets and informal vendors who sell their products on the streets. Research shows that these groups encounter varied work experiences given their differing working conditions. However, existing research is not enough to describe their stressful work experiences as well as their coping strategies. Thus, this research study aimed to describe and compare the work-related stress of fish vendor groups in Antique and how they cope with it. To address these, a convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. A total of 40 fish vendors with a mean age of 44.70 years, classified as formal (20) and informal (20), served as respondents. Data were gathered using a one-on-one interview with a question guide and a modified survey instrument for levels of perceived work stress (LPWS). Mann-Whitney U analysis revealed no significant difference between the overall LPWS of both groups (W= 4272.50, p>0.05). However, per dimension analysis of results showed a significant difference in the physical work environment dimension (W= 85.50, p<0.001). Conceptual content analysis also indicated that work-related stressors and coping strategies are relatively different between vendor groups and across dimensions. The findings of this research suggest that the physical work environment is a significant dimension that differentiates fish vendor groups’ levels and sources of work stress. Moreover, findings imply that social resources, especially among co-vendors, reduce LPWS.

The nature of communication and relationship between migrant parents and left-behind children
Cabigunda, Gael J.; Corpus, Hazel Jade L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
This study is qualitative in nature which sought to describe the nature of communication between migrant parents and left-behind children and to describe how their communication influenced their relationship and the balance of the family unit despite the physical separation and the distance. The family system’s theory was used as a framework in this study, to better explain the nature of communication and the relationship between migrant parents and left-behind children among transnational families. Twenty-two (22) left-behind children were conveniently sampled to participate in focus group discussions conducted by the researchers. Experiences of left-behind children on migration were captured through the use of an interview guide which included questions pertaining to: (1) the methods used in communication, (2) the problems encountered in communication, (3) the content of the communication and (4) the parent-child relationship. Data was then analysed using thematic analysis. Results showed that the nature of communication and relationship between migrant parents and left-behind children are dependent on: the characteristics of the parent and the child, the methods used in communication, the existing relationship before migration occurred, and the guardian’s role in the triangle relationship. In conclusion, the frequency of communication served as an affirmation of the existing relationship between parent and child. Furthermore, when the parent and child have an open relationship they enjoy a better quality of communication. Communication was also used by parent and child to fulfil their roles and affirm their membership in the family despite physical separation and the distance.

Negrosanon, indi tikalon: The severed ties between Ilonggo and Negrense identity and the creation of Negrense "Tikalon" stereotype
Caberte, Kizhi G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)
The Negrense "tikalon" stereotype has acquired popularity in recent years as a result of its virality on numerous social media platforms. The amusing banter between Ilonggos and Negrenses culminated in the return of the long-established "tikalon" stereotype. This piqued the researchers' curiosity in investigating the phenomenon and studying its emergence. This study investigates the "tikalon" stereotype of Negrense identity and how it can be explained using economic scarcity theory. The researchers argues that the Ilonggo people's creation of negative stereotypes about their Negrense neighbors, such as "tikalon" and "hambog" (proud), was a result of their insecurity over their own economic shortcomings in comparison to Negros Occidental’s economic affluence during the 1930s. When the sugar industry prospered in Negros due to a new generation of entrepreneurs who established big plantations at the time, it created a significant gap between Negros Occidental and Iloilo. This study utilizes narrative by Ilonggos in addition to a literary analysis of the works of Ramon Muzones through Ma. Cecilia Locsin-Nava. This paper asserts that Ilonggos who experienced economic deprivation channeled their anxiety and frustrations by creating the stereotypes about Bacolodnon in order to maintain and uphold the preexisting status quo.

Antidiarrheal activity of Pterocarpus indicus bark extracts using castor oil-induced diarrhea model on mice
Cabatea, Norberto C. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)
This study evaluated the antidiarrheal activity of the bark of Pterocarpus indicus (Narra). The crude methanolic extract of the bark was subjected to sequential extraction using hexane, DCM, and ethyl acetate. These extracts were tested for antidiarrheal activity in vitro using the castor oil induced diarrhea model in mice employing charcoal tracing method. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was used in determining the chemical constituents present in every extracts using spraying reagents to aid in the visualization of spots. Crude methanolic extract dosage 200 mg/kg body weight is the comparable dosage to the reference drug loperamide (2 mg/kg body weight). The hexane extract was the most active fraction and 200 mg/kg dosage was more effective than with the positive control loperamide (2 mg/kg). No antidiarrheal activity found in the fraction of DCM and ethyl acetate extracts. Phytochemical screening revealed positive tests for tannins, phenolics, terpenes, cardiac glycosides, saponins and reducing sugars in all fractions. Tests for flavonoids and alkaloids, however, were negative.

Comparative analysis of the best practices in ecosystem-based watershed planning and management in the Philippines and Canada
Cabios, John Paul G.; Untaran, Paul Joseph N. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)
The Philippines is one of the many examples of a developing state vulnerable to natural disaster that erodes soil and water quality. With the continuous evolution of watershed management practices and the growing importance of climate change mitigation, there is a need to reassess the structure, function, and policy approach of the different stakeholders. And due to climate change and anthropogenic impacts, the environment especially watershed and agricultural farms in Canada are greatly affected. Because of this, there is a need to create environmental management practices to mitigate and minimize the effects of climate change and human interventions. The objectives of this paper is (1) to provide an analysis of the best watershed management practices in Canada and Philippines, (2) to identify governance structures and inter-governmental coordination, and (3) to determine planning approaches and community and stakeholder engagement. This paper will discuss generic models of governance in environmental policy and the different approaches to water management in both countries. This paper will also compare the differences between the models and approaches used in the two countries. And lastly, this paper will evaluate the use of watershed management practices in Canada and Philippines in order to find out the most compatible and reliable method or approach of watershed management.

In vitro antibacterial activity of Hibiscus rosa sinensis leaf extracts against some pathogens associated with urinary tract infections
Cabayao, Coney B. (Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-04)
The in vitro antibacterial activity of Hibiscus rosa sinensis leaf ( methanolic, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, and aqueous ) extracts were studied against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) and Gram-positive ( Streptococcus faecalis) bacteria. The methanolic extract was subjected to sequential liquid-liquid extraction using solvents of varying polarity and concentrations. Out of the 5 extracts, methanolic and dichloromethane extracts exhibited the highest antibacterial activity as measured using the zone of inhibition. This was followed by ethyl acetate and n-hexane extracts. At 200 mg/ml concentration, all extracts were considered active when tested with E. coli and S. faecalis, and were partially active against P. aeruginosa. The aqueous extract was inactive towards the three bacteria. The 200 mg/ml concentration showed no significant difference when compared with the positive control, amoxicillin (12.51μg/ml). This shows that Hibiscus rosa sinensis exhibits a promising antibacterial activity. Phytochemical analysis of the active fraction- the methanolic extract- showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, saponins, steroids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and anthraquinones. These bioactive components could be responsible for the antibacterial activity of Hibiscus rosa sinensis leaf extracts.

Responses to the sugar industry crisis: The case of Negros Occidental
Cabanting, Crispy A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)
This paper analyzes the responses to the collapse of the sugar industry of the local government, non-government organizations, sugar worker households, the sugar industry particularly the haciendas, and other industries. It shows that the local government and the non-government organizations have provided long-term assistance towards the recovery of the province. On the other hand, the sugar industry (haciendas), other industries and households have diversified and specialized, looked into other sources of income and ventured into other kinds of production. The paper also determines the socioeconomic status of the residents of the province of Negros Occidental before, during, and after the crisis. Since 1988, the levels of malnutrition, unemployment and estimated vital rates in the province of Negros Occidental have slowly approached manageable levels partly because of various intervention programs by local government and non-government organizations.
