Item Resident's assessment of life in Asilo de MoloCabrias, Ruby Daryl B.; Cortes, Rossan F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)There is an increasing number of elderly living in institutions today. This is due to the fact that they are abandoned or don’t have a family to take care of them. As such, the researchers are interested to study how the elderly assess their life inside the institution. The primary aim of the study is to know the elderlies’ assessment of life in Asilo de Molo. The other objectives of the study are: (1) Describe the organizational structure of Asilo de Molo; (2) Know the profile of the elderly residents in Asilo de Molo; (3) Determine whether elderlies’ personal assessment of life in Asilo de Molo varies with the means by which they were admitted in the institution. The study was conducted from August to December 2005 in Asilo de Molo- a home for the aged located at Avanceña Street, Iloilo City. Data was collected using the survey method. Twenty elderly residents of Asilo de Molo ages 60 years old and over were interviewed using the interview schedule. The respondents are either referred to or personally decided to stay in Asilo de Molo. Key informant interview was also used to gather data. The researchers interviewed the staff to ask about the organizational structure of the institution and the roles and responsibilities of those who compose it, the number of elderly residents and their socio- demographic profile and the criteria and process of admission to Asilo de Molo. The organizational structure of Asilo de Molo is composed of the Board of Trustees, the Administrator, the Administrative Council and the five Coordinators namely: the Pastoral Ministry Coordinator, Social Service Coordinator, Residential Care Coordinator, Administrative Service Coordinator and the Marillac Renewal Center Coordinator. The survey reveals that most residents of Asilo de Molo have the age between 60 years old and 85 years old. They are mostly women. Most of them are also single or widowed who have no immediate family member to take care of them. The results also show that residents who either personally decide or referred to stay in Asilo de Molo are happy and contented with their life. Even though some referred residents are lonely and want to leave the place, many want to spend the rest of their lives inside the institution. The researchers seek to recommend that more studies about the elderly be done since there are only few researches pertaining to them. Spending more time with the elderly and interviews with the staffs can lead to better understanding of the study.Item A content analysis of "Pulso Ng Bayan" segment of TV PatrolCabug, Ma. Luz Sophia L.; Gonzaga, Lenny S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The study looked into the factors affecting women’s decision to participate in either the informal or the formal sector in the City Proper district of Iloilo City. The study has 126 respondents who were randomly chosen from the four barangays of Iloilo City proper namely; General Hughes, Ortiz, Rizal Pala-Pala I, and Rizal Pala- Pala II. Fifty percent of the respondents were women who are working in the informal sector as they are the focus of the study. The other half of the respondents is the women working in the formal sector of the economy. The dependent variable is a dichotomous variable assuming the value of 1 if the respondent prefers working in the informal sector and 0 if otherwise. The independent variable identified for the study are the: age of the respondent, number of years in school, number of children below 7 years of age in the household, civil status, household size, status in the household, household annual income, respondent’s other sources of income. The equation was estimated using binary logistic regression. Multivariate analysis revealed that age of respondent, number of years schooling, number of children below 7 years of age in the household and the status in household are significant within the 5% level of significance. Moreover, the chi- square value of 40.88 which is also significant at 5% level shows that the model is significant in determining the factors affecting the decision to participate in either the informal or the formal sector.Item The rating system and the programming of Iloilo radio statistics: A descriptive studyCabug, Ma. Lucinda V. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1987-03)This research paper is a descriptive study on the rating system and programming of Iloilo radio stations. The researcher included all the managers and program directors of the radio stations in Iloilo City as sample respondents. Eighteen respondents were interviewed. It has been found out that eleven adhere to the rating system. When the station’s program do not rate, they undertake certain measures such as: scrapping the program format, formulating new program concepts, and changing the person handling the program. It should be noted that although most of the respondents adhered to the rating system, ratings were not considered the major basis in making programming. Instead, the main consideration is the station's target audience. Non — credibility of the rating results was the main reason cited by respondents who do not adhere to the rating system. Consequently, most radio stations independently conduct their own researches to ensure validity and reliability of the rating results.Item Sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbiansCabungcal, Kristine Marie C.; Cebrian, Veah Marie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)This study described the sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbians. Eight respondents (6 tomboys; 2 lesbians) participated in this study. The tomboys were found to assume more of a masculine role, while lesbians the feminine role. Questionnaires were utilized to describe gender identity and coming out. Also, two Likert types of scales by John Mohr that is Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Identity Scale and Outness Inventory were used. One-one-one interview with the respondents was also conducted to further substantiate what it is being a tomboy or n.lesbian. Results showed that a greater number of respondents (50%) had experienced sexual identity confusion during their elementary years. The same percentage of respondents also reported that it was at the age of 15 that they first realized that they were homosexuals. All of the respondents are clear of their sexual identity and have fully accepted themselves. The respondents were open to their friends. While open to their friends, they remain to be closeted at home due to the stigma that is attached by their family members to tomboys and lesbians.Item The effects of government agencies and industry-initiated interventions in the loomweaving industry in Miagao, Iloilo 1995-2000Cabrera, Genebeth A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)The study aims to determine the effects of the government agencies/industry-initiated interventions to the loom weaving firms/industry in Maig-ao, Iloilo: 1995-2000. In-depth interviews with the respondents was done based on the five areas of business development: organization/management, managerial, techno-production, marketing and financial, to determine the effect of the government agencies/industry-initiated interventions to the loom weaving firms/industry. Several activities were conducted to the loom weaving firms/industry based on their needs as determined in the Training Need Assessment Seminar/Workshop conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry and other assisting agencies. Firms successfully learned from the training/seminars and consultancies conducted to them; however, applications were limited because of the lack of resources. The absorptive capacity of the firm owners/weavers was also a problem that is why their learning from the training/seminar and consultancies showed limited applications. There exist the Katilingban sang Manughabol sa Iloilo of which some firms were members, but industry-initiated interventions were limited. Financial assistance from the private entities through the association was availed by the firms. Increased in sales, income, employment and investment was gained by the firms/industry as shown in the records and reports made by the agencies assisting them for the last five years (1995-2000).Item The effect of perceiver's gender and masculinity on male masculinity performing female streotypic rolesCabrera, Gresilita Liza B.; Ochon, Maybelle Lalaine T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-10)This study was designed to examine the effects of perceiver’s gender and masculinity cues on male masculinity performing female stereotypic roles. 60 participants consisting of thirty males and thirty females, were randomly selected and assigned to four treatment groups. The groups had been assessed using the Instrument which comprises three descriptions with five items for the first description and 10 items for both the second and third descriptions. A 2x2 factorial design and two-way between ANOVA were used with a 0.05 significance level. The results showed that perceiver’s gender did not affect perception but masculinity cues yielded a considerable mark. Both male and female responded remarkably on descriptions with high masculinity cues only. The results further indicated that there is no interaction between the two independent variables.Item Print media exposure and the attitude of graduating mass and broadcast communication students toward classified adsCabanilla, Richelle T. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1988-02)Hypothetically, frequency of exposure to an object or idea affects one’s attitude toward it. Such premise was used for this particular study. An attempt is made to determine if any relationship exists between exposure to print media, specifically to newspapers, and attitude toward the classified ads. Totalling 67 in all, graduating Mass and Broadcast Communication students of School Year 1986-87 in Iloilo City, were made as respondents. A set of questionnaires were handed out to them and the line of inquiry covered the areas from frequency of newspaper reading to behavioral inclinations or action tendencies toward the classified ads. Aside from trying to determine the frequency of exposure and what the respondents think of the ads, the questionnaire was also designed to deal with the three components of attitude: the cognitive, affective and the behavioral. One concept about the nature of attitude is taken from the Latent Process Viewpoint which incidentally is used as a guide in this study. The viewpoint surmises that attitude is a hidden mental or neural process which takes place in the individual. As such, one limitation in the study of attitude is that it is not directly observable. Inferences about one’s attitude can only be based from the study of overt behavioral responses. Theoretically, exposure is considered as the independent variable and attitude as the dependent variable. In actuality however, attitude is more of an intervening variable because the study focuses on the stimulus-response set-up with "attitude" seen as a possible explanation for the causation of response or responses to the stimulus. Based on the data gathered, the respondents are in general, favorably disposed toward the classified ads. The positive attitude is connected somehow with the respondents' belief that the classified section is primarily informative and entertaining at the same time. To prove or disprove the hypothesis, a contingency table was constructed for the computation of the chi-square. The table included the respondents’ frequency of newspaperreading and whether they like or dislike the ads. The computation of the chi-square nullifies the hypothesis that students who like and dislike the classified ads differ in their frequency of reading the newspapers. Similarly, based on the data gathered, a couple of hypotheses were formulated. One, students who have a favorable and unfavorable descriptions of the classified ads differ in belief on the ads’ capacity to provide for their purposes or motives in reading them. Two, students who have and don’t have any action tendencies toward the classified ads differ in their belief on possible gains which can be derived from them. The study of attitude per se is complex thus further researches are recommended.Item Koreans in Iloilo City: Their lifestyles, social-psychological and cultural adjustmentCabangal, Joann; Ledesma, Chrisgel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study sought to know the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, social- psychological, and cultural adjustment of Korean visitors in Iloilo City, who were currently enrolled in Moohan Tutorial Services, Inc. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-04)The purpose of this study was to determine the job performance and job satisfaction of CAS-UPV teachers, and to examine the relationship between performance and satisfaction. Specifically, three elements were included in this study: (1) the self-evaluation of job performance among CAS-UPV teachers by division, educational attainment and years of teaching experience; (2) the self-reported job satisfaction among CAS- UPV teachers; and (3) the relationship between job performance and job satisfaction. A non-experimental correlation research design was used in this study. The population of the study consisted of all College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) teachers of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV), Miagao campus, Iloilo. Out of the 107 possible respondents, 74 respondents returned their questionnaire which had three parts: the PERSONAL INVENTORY PROFILE, the SELFEVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE ON JOB PERFORMANCE, and the JOB SATISFACTION SCALE. Using the one-way ANOVA, it was found that: (1) there was no significant difference in the self-evaluation of job performance when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to division and educational attainment; (2) there was no significant difference in job satisfaction when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to their respective division; (3) there was a significant difference in the self-evaluation of job performance when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to years of teaching experience; (4) there was a significant difference on job satisfaction when the CAS-UPV teachers were grouped according to educational attainment and years of teaching experience; and (5) there was a significant relationship between job performance and job satisfaction.
