Sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbians
Cabungcal, Kristine Marie C.; Cebrian, Veah Marie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)
This study described the sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbians. Eight respondents (6 tomboys; 2 lesbians) participated in this study. The tomboys were found to assume more of a masculine role, while lesbians the feminine role. Questionnaires were utilized to describe gender identity and coming out. Also, two Likert types of scales by John Mohr that is Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Identity Scale and Outness Inventory were used. One-one-one interview with the respondents was also conducted to further substantiate what it is being a tomboy or n.lesbian. Results showed that a greater number of respondents (50%) had experienced sexual identity confusion during their elementary years. The same percentage of respondents also reported that it was at the age of 15 that they first realized that they were homosexuals. All of the respondents are clear of their sexual identity and have fully accepted themselves. The respondents were open to their friends. While open to their friends, they remain to be closeted at home due to the stigma that is attached by their family members to tomboys and lesbians.

The effect of perceiver's gender and masculinity on male masculinity performing female streotypic roles
Cabrera, Gresilita Liza B.; Ochon, Maybelle Lalaine T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-10)
This study was designed to examine the effects of perceiver’s gender and masculinity cues on male masculinity performing female stereotypic roles. 60 participants consisting of thirty males and thirty females, were randomly selected and assigned to four treatment groups. The groups had been assessed using the Instrument which comprises three descriptions with five items for the first description and 10 items for both the second and third descriptions. A 2x2 factorial design and two-way between ANOVA were used with a 0.05 significance level. The results showed that perceiver’s gender did not affect perception but masculinity cues yielded a considerable mark. Both male and female responded remarkably on descriptions with high masculinity cues only. The results further indicated that there is no interaction between the two independent variables.

Children of fathers behind bars: Evaluating their perceived social stigma in relation to their levels of self-esteem and social interaction
Cabarles, Maria L.; Muyco, Rich Girl S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)
The study aimed to describe the relationship of social stigma experienced or perceived to self-esteem and level of social interaction of children with incarcerated father. Respondents consisted of thirty-two high school student ages 13-17 years old, either currently studying or out of school residing in the rural or urban areas of Iloilo. They were selected using a quota sampling method. Gathering of data was in the form of interview and questionnaire which was answered by the respondents. The study hypothesized that there is a relation between the self-esteem and level of social interaction, there is a relation between self-esteem and social stigma experienced or perceived by the children and there is a relation between the level of social interaction and social stigma experienced or perceived of the children with incarcerated father. Spearman-Rank Correlation (Rs) was used to analyze data. The results showed that only the self-esteem and the level of social interaction of children with incarcerated father has a relationship.

The relationship of children's concern and the couple's empty-nest stress experiences with their relationship purpose
Cabarles, Irene Grace S.; Tan, Cesa, Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
This correlational study aimed to find out whether the degree of children’s concern for their parents and the empty-nest stress experiences of these parents have an effect on their relationship purpose. A total of 40 couples participated in the study. The Children’s Concern Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Relationship Purpose Scale were utilized for the data gathering. Generally, the results revealed that the higher the concern showed by the children to their empty-nest parents, the more likely that the empty-nest couple will focus on their marital relationship. However, the average amount of stress experienced by the empty-nest couples does not have a significant relationship with their relationship purpose.

Parent absenteeism and the child's motivation to learn and academic performance
Bugna, Edelweiss C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-03-20)
This study sought to compare the motivation to learn and academic performance of children with absentee and non-absentee parents. Respondents were 180 pupils from Grades IV, V, and VI in Miagao Central Elementary School. The respondents were made to answer independently a 40-item questionnaire with a 5-point Likert Scale. It was hypothesized that children with absentee parents have low motivation to learn and poor academic performance and that there is a correlation between the two variables. T-test for independent samples was used to determine the difference of the mean scores of children with absentee and non-absentee parents. Pearson r was utilized to measure correlation between motivation to learn and academic performance. Results showed that motivation to learn (t1 = .30) and academic performance (t2 = -.24) were not significant at .05 alpha level and there was a low correlation (r = .02) between motivation to learn and academic performance. Findings imply that parent absenteeism did not entirely determine the degree of the child’s motivation to learn and academic performance due to other factors such as parental involvement, the child’s intelligence, home environment, teacher and classroom setting, and the child’s intrinsic inclination to learn and perform well.

Psychosocial costs of post-employment of Overseas Filipino Workers of Leon, Iloilo
Britanico, Lee Robert M.; Roxas, Pearl Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)
This study aimed to find out the psychosocial effects of post-employment on the OFWs, as well as how they would reintegrate themselves to their respective families and communities. Thirty five respondents, 23 female and 12 male, were selected through convenience sampling. The respondents were residents of Leon, Iloilo. Each has worked abroad for at least 5 years, is married, and has children. The findings did not support the idea that labor migration affects primarily the relationship of the migrant workers to their family and community. The respondents remained close to their family despite being away from them for quite a time. Their reintegration to community was relatively easy despite being unaware of the reintegration programs of the government

Organizational climate and levels of job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City
Bragancia, Imee Grace E.; Vergara, Catherine Joy C. (2004-03)
This correlational study aimed to find out whether organizational climate has a significant relationship on job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City. A total of 44 respondents participated in the study. Thirty-two (32) nurses came from private hospitals, namely Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital and Iloilo Mission Hospital. While 12 nurses came from West Visayas State University Medical Center, which is a public hospital. The Work Climate Questionnaire by Deci (2000) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory by Maslach (1981) were utilized for data gathering. Generally, results revealed that the higher the nurses perceived autonomy support the lower their degree of burnout in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales. However, while private and public hospital nurses were satisfied with the autonomy support provided by their supervisors, they still reported a lack of personal accomplishment. The researchers recommend that future research should be done on correlates of personal and organizational factors on nurse burnout.

Reproductive health awareness, problems, and health seeking practices of couples in fishing households in Sapian, Capiz
Bonitillo, Sunshine Mae B.; Galapin, Danilyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)
The study sought to examine the reproductive health knowledge, problems and healthseeking practices of selected couples aged 15-49. Forty-six (46) couples served as respondents of the study. This study hypothesized that: 1) couples in fishing households reproductive health knowledge; 2) Couples in fishing households have numerous number of reported reproductive health problems; and 3) couples in fishing households have traditional health seeking practices. The Likert type of test, and open-ended questions were utilized for data gathering. The frequency, percentage distribution and average mean were used as a tool for analysis. The result show that couples in fishing households, have high level of reproductive health awareness. Female respondents in particular are aware of their reproductive health rights, birth control methods, and family planning than male respondents. In addition, the result reveals that the respondents have experienced several cases of reproductive health problems. However, they did not often seek medical attention. Instead, the respondents just visit the barangay health center for birth control supply and medicine for some ailments.

Self-fulfilling prophecy and self-efficacy: Their effects on performance
Beter, Cipriano; Bocala, Mary Ilyich (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-03)
Individuals’ performances in academics and in any task-related jobs are sometimes influenced by others’ or one’s own expectations. In addition, a person’s views of his competence and capability could similarly affect its achievement. These were the highlights of the study wherein the researchers sought to investigate the effect of self- efficacy on performance, self-fulfilling prophecy on performance, and the interaction effect of both on performance. Participants of this study consisted of eighty (80) Third Year High school students from two sections of Capiz National High School. A 2 (high and low levels of self-efficacy) x 2 (positive and negative self-fulfilling prophecy) between-subject factorial design was used in this study. The randomly selected participants were asked to answer the General Perceived Self-efficacy Scale. Arbitrarily, their scores were used as a basis for assigning them to either high or low self-efficacy group. There were two phases in the study. In the first phase, the predetermined high efficacious participants viewed a film depicting the successful performance of the student in solving a chemistry problem. Low efficacious participants on the other hand separately viewed a film which depicted the unsuccessful performance of the student. Verbal persuasion was given by the lecturer after each film was shown. In the second phase of the experiment, high efficacious participants were subdivided into two groups. One group was induced with a positive expectation by the confederate and the other group was induced with a negative one. The same procedure was administered with the low efficacious participants. The F-score for the effect of self-efficacy on performance was F(l,80) =0.597, p<05, indicating that the performance scores of students whether they belong in the high or low self-efficacy group had no significant difference. Results further showed that the effect of self-fulfilling prophecy was significant F(l,80)=19.947, p<.05, suggesting that the performance scores of participants regardless what level of self-efficacy group they were assigned had a significant difference. This result suggests that teacher’s expectation (positive or negative) strongly affect students’ performance. On the other hand, findings on the interaction effect of self-efficacy and self-fulfilling prophecy received no strong support.

Locus of control of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers: Its relation to their academic adjustment
Bataan, Arminda A.; Losare, Anna Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)
This study sought to determine the kind of locus of control of the respondents and the level of academic adjustment as seen in their grade point averages. The researchers aimed to find out if there exists a relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. This study was patterned on a previous research on the relationship between the same variables but this study utilized a different instrument and respondents came from Iloilo province. Fifteen (15) college students whose fathers were imprisoned at the time that they were enrolled served as respondents of the study. All respondents came from Iloilo, 33% of which are from Iloilo City and the remaining 67% are from the municipalities. Their ages range from 17-24. Respondents were selected using the snowball method. Respondents were asked to answer the Trice Academic Locus of Control Scale. The scale is composed of 28 items answerable by true or false determined the kind of locus of control of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. In addition, the respondents were asked to submit their copy of grades of the previous semester to determine how well they adjust academically. The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation is r=0.26 with a rcrit=0.441 at 0.05 alpha. This signifies that indeed there is a significant relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. However, it revealed a weak positive correlation between locus of control and academic adjustment. The findings imply that locus of control is not the sole cause or factor for academic adjustment. The cause or source of a well-adjusted academic performance of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers may therefore be attributed to other factors such as economic and social support coming from family and friends. Such factors could even lead to a poor academic performance. Lastly, academic adjustment and locus of control vary among the respondents, which suggest individual differences among them
