Item Koreans in Iloilo City: Their lifestyles, social-psychological and cultural adjustmentCabangal, Joann; Ledesma, Chrisgel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study sought to know the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, social- psychological, and cultural adjustment of Korean visitors in Iloilo City, who were currently enrolled in Moohan Tutorial Services, Inc. The results showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are generally single with ages ranging from 20 to 30 years old and are dependent on the allowances they receive from their parents or guardians monthly. The study also showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are relatively well adjusted in their life in the Philippines, which is manifested in their improved social interaction with the locals of Iloilo City. At the same time, they are generally well off as reflected on their spending patterns as compared to the Filipinos’ standard of living. They relatively spend more than an average Filipino would spend for food, transportation, clothing and many others for a certain period of time.Item Responses to the sugar industry crisis: The case of Negros OccidentalCabanting, Crispy A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This paper analyzes the responses to the collapse of the sugar industry of the local government, non-government organizations, sugar worker households, the sugar industry particularly the haciendas, and other industries. It shows that the local government and the non-government organizations have provided long-term assistance towards the recovery of the province. On the other hand, the sugar industry (haciendas), other industries and households have diversified and specialized, looked into other sources of income and ventured into other kinds of production. The paper also determines the socioeconomic status of the residents of the province of Negros Occidental before, during, and after the crisis. Since 1988, the levels of malnutrition, unemployment and estimated vital rates in the province of Negros Occidental have slowly approached manageable levels partly because of various intervention programs by local government and non-government organizations.Item Comparative development of larval performance of catfish hybrids (Clarias macrocephalus Gunther x Clarias gariepinus Burchell)Cabanos, Cerrone Salamat (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)Our native catfish, Clarias macrocephalus, is one of the most well-accepted fish in the country. With its soft and savory flesh, this species has high demand in local markets. However, due to its relatively slow growth and poor breeding activity, our native catfish has become rarely used nowadays in aquaculture. This led to the introduction of exotic and faster growing species like the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, and Thai catfish, Clarias batrachus, which in turn, resulted to the near extinction of the native species. There is therefore a perceived need to undertake a breeding program involving this native catfish and other exotic species. One potential solution to increase our production rate of the native catfish is to hybridize it with the African catfish. Interspecific hybridization has been a popular breeding program utilized by researchers attempting to produce fish expressing hybrid vigor (positive heterosis) or for combining valuable traits from more than one species. This study is on the characterization of the early developmental stages of fertilized eggs and the comparison of larval performance (in terms of percent fertilization, hatching and larval survival) resulting from the artificial cross of Clarias macrocephalus (native catfish) and Clarias gariepinus (African catfish) and its parental species. In comparing the rates of egg development among crosses (all macrolecithal and discoidal cleavage), it was determined that fertilized eggs of the standard hybrid cross (C. gariepinus male x C. macrocephalus female) have a relatively faster rate of development than those from the reciprocal cross (C. macrocephalus male x C. gariepinus female). Results on determination of larval performance showed that there is no significant difference in percent fertilization and percent survival after 7 days between hybrid and parental crosses. However, in terms of percent hatching, the reciprocal hybrid cross (C macrocephalus male x C. gariepinus female), together with the C. gariepinus x C. gariepinus parental cross had a significantly higher percent hatching (P < 0.01) compared to the standard cross (C. gariepinus male x C. macrocephalus female).Item Alcohol use among out-of-school youth in Iloilo CityCabaluna, Vanessa P.; Eler, Paul Candice Ellen M.; Gazo, Ella Catherine T.; Marla, Mary Ellen J.; Train, Christine Q. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)The out-of-school youth, 13-22 years old, appears to have one of the greatest risks for alcohol use. This study was conducted to determine alcohol use among out-of-school youth in the City of Iloilo. The subjects of the study were 150 out-of-school youths, randomly selected from 15 barangays of the 6 districts of Iloilo City. Data for this research was gathered using an interview schedule. Results show that one hundred thirty-one (87.33%) out of 150 out-of-school youth respondents had been initiated to alcoholic drinks. Their mean age at alcohol initiation was 15.81. Majority of these respondents usually drink beer (58.78%), followed by gin (13.74%), and tuba/lambanog (12.22%). Other choices include rum and brandy. Factors that influenced the respondents to drink alcohol included friends (67.94%), relatives (12.98%), father (9.16%). Other factors included personal decision, mass media, and mood/problems. Reasons for drinking alcoholic beverages include celebrations of special occasions (30.53%), leisure (18.32%), curiosity (15.27%), and sense of belongingness (12.98%). Other reasons include peer pressure, personal choice and personal problems. Reasons for not drinking include personal choice (47.37%), health reasons (31.58%), family prohibits (15.79%), and religion prohibits (5.26%). Alcohol use is significantly associated with respondents' sex, involvement in organisations or community activities, smoking, and use of prohibited drugs. There is no significant difference between alcohol use and family drinking status & with whom they are staying.Item A case study on the coastal resource co-management of Concepcion, IloiloCaballero, Noemi G.; Overio, Sheryl R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)The research study is entitled A CASE STUDY ON COASTAL RESOURCE COMANAGEMENT IN CONCEPCION, ILOILO. The study answers the following objectives, first, to determine the contextual attributes of the municipality in terms of: a biophysical, b) market c) socio-cultural d) institutional and organizational attributes. Second, to assess the institutional and organizational arrangement of state and non-state actors which include Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the non-governmental organizations, and their relationship with one another in coastal resource co-management in Concepcion. Iloilo. Third, is to determine the type of coastal co-management arrangement that exist in the municipality. The conceptual framework of the study was adopted from the International Council for Living and Aquatic Resource Management (ICLARM). Specifically, the researchers focused on the organizational and institutional arrangement among state and non-state actors in co-management arrangements. A determination was also made on the type of comanagement arrangement existing in the municipality. In the conduct of the study, the researchers conducted interviews with key informants and prepared questionnaires for the fisherfolk-respondents. The respondents are the following: a) Department of Environment and Natural Resources, b) Department of Agriculture, c) Local Government Officials (Legislative and Executive), d) Northern Iloilo Alliance for Coastal Development (NIACDEV), e) Tambaliza Small-Scale Fishermen's Association (TASFA). f) Nipa Small- Scale Fishermen's Association (NISFA). The results of the study showed that a consultative type of co-management arrangement exists in Concepcion based on a frequency count of answers to questionnaires, interviews conducted by the researchers, and an analysis of legal policies.Item Children of fathers behind bars: Evaluating their perceived social stigma in relation to their levels of self-esteem and social interactionCabarles, Maria L.; Muyco, Rich Girl S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)The study aimed to describe the relationship of social stigma experienced or perceived to self-esteem and level of social interaction of children with incarcerated father. Respondents consisted of thirty-two high school student ages 13-17 years old, either currently studying or out of school residing in the rural or urban areas of Iloilo. They were selected using a quota sampling method. Gathering of data was in the form of interview and questionnaire which was answered by the respondents. The study hypothesized that there is a relation between the self-esteem and level of social interaction, there is a relation between self-esteem and social stigma experienced or perceived by the children and there is a relation between the level of social interaction and social stigma experienced or perceived of the children with incarcerated father. Spearman-Rank Correlation (Rs) was used to analyze data. The results showed that only the self-esteem and the level of social interaction of children with incarcerated father has a relationship.Item The Margarico family: Political elite of Janiuay, Iloilo, PhilippinesCabarles, Helen A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This is a descriptive study of the Margarico as a political elite in Janiuay, Iloilo. The study was conducted using interview guide questions for key informants and archival research in gathering pertinent data. The research aims to (1) to identify the reasons that propels the Margarico family to seek political power in the municipal politics of Janiuay, Iloilo; and, (2) to identify the factors that enable the Magaricos to capture political power. The study found out that societal responsibility and public service are their prime reasons in seeking for political power in the municipal politics and that the socio-economic background of the political family is not the prime factor in their access to political positions. There are other factors that can account like good public reputation and good tract of records as public servant.Item The relationship of children's concern and the couple's empty-nest stress experiences with their relationship purposeCabarles, Irene Grace S.; Tan, Cesa, Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)This correlational study aimed to find out whether the degree of children’s concern for their parents and the empty-nest stress experiences of these parents have an effect on their relationship purpose. A total of 40 couples participated in the study. The Children’s Concern Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Relationship Purpose Scale were utilized for the data gathering. Generally, the results revealed that the higher the concern showed by the children to their empty-nest parents, the more likely that the empty-nest couple will focus on their marital relationship. However, the average amount of stress experienced by the empty-nest couples does not have a significant relationship with their relationship purpose.Item Habitat-type and temporal comparison of the meiobenthic composition of Taklong Island National Marine ReserveBurgos, Lorelie A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)Meiofauna are very important indicators of human disturbances in the natural ecosystem. It plays a major role in the primary production, rapid nutrient cycling and other benthic chemical processes. Knowledge regarding marine benthic communities is scarce and is limited only to temperate regions. Moreover, only a few have been conducted in the Philippines, while no studies have been conducted in the Taklong Island National Marine Reserve, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, so this serves as the baseline for further studies to be conducted in the place. This study provides a characterization of the spatial and temporal distribution of meiobenthic fauna in the Taklong Island National Marine Reserve. Specifically, the study aimed to compare the composition of meiobenthic infauna in different habitat types and to examine changes in their abundance and distribution from 4, 16 and 26 weeks after the oil spill. Meiobenthic samples were collected in Taklong Island National Marine Reserve during the Rapid and Monitoring Phases of the Benthos Project of the UPV Oil Spill Response Program. Surveys were conducted in September 2 and November 23, 2006 and February 9 2007, respectively 4, 16 and 26 weeks after the spill. Nine stations within the area were chosen based on the station grid for the biological surveys. A total of 20 taxa were identified, with nematodes being numerically dominant. It also showed the highest mean abundance in all the sampling period and for the entire habitat type. The over all mean density was (80276.71494 ind. m2, SD =19988.37), with the highest peak in February 20072007 which is 26 weeks after the oil spill (143,508.4 ind/m2). And the lowest density was recorded in the month of September 2006, 4 weeks after the oil spill (47,205.43 ind. m2). For the habitat type soft bottom has the highest recorded mean density in the entire sampling period. For the temporal variation food source, organic matter and temperature dictates the changes in distribution of meiofauna but in the study it mostly because of the oil spill happened before the sampling period.Item Electoral campaign of mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 electionCababasay, Ivy C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-10)This is a descriptive study of the electoral campaign of the six mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 election. The 1992 Leon mayoral candidates were Romulo Cabana, Neri Cabsaba. Alejandro Caelian. Jaime Calosing. Rodolfo Camarista and Ismael Candolada. This study aims to present a profile of the 1992 Leon mayoral candidates: to determine the campaign resources; to analyze the campaign organization and the campaign strategies of the mayoral candidates during the electoral campaign: to analyze the voters' choice and perceptions of the 1992 Leon mayoral electoral campaign; and, to analyze the electoral campaign of the mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon. To satisfy these objectives, the researcher interviewed the mayoral candidates, some of their family members, their campaign staff and/or their representatives. A questionnaire was also formulated and was administered to the respondents. The findings of the study reveal that almost all of the mayoral candidates came from prominent families. Most of them came from the upper-middle class families except for Cabana and Cabsaba who considered their family as belonging to the lower class. Except for Romulo Cabana, all mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon were college graduates. Except for Calosing and Camarista all four mayoral candidates had ran for an elective office prior to the 1992 election. The campaign resources, particularly the material resources of a candidate were the determining factor in the success of his electoral campaign. It was also found out that most of the mayoral candidates have no formal structural organization in their electoral campaign except for Cabana and Calosing. Campaign strategies common among the mayoral candidates were holding of caucus in the barangays, distribution of leaflets, stickers, sample ballots and posting of streamers and other campaign materials. Character assasination and mudslinging were also present in the campaign. Voters were more interested in the personal issues raised against the mayoral candidates than their proposed programs of government or public concerns. They (voters) voted for the mayoral candidate based on the latter's personality or personal attributes. Personalities are more remembered than social and political issues. Although there was vote-buying in the 1992 election, the mayoral candidates and the voters themselves considered it peaceful and orderly due to the absence of violence.
