Item The effects of compost produced from rice Oryza sativa straw and sugarcane Saccharum officinarum trash on the growth of pechay Brassica rapaBrizuela, Karlyn G. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03)This study was designed to determine the effects of the application of compost produced from rice Oryza saliva straw and sugarcane Saccharum officinarum trash on the growth of pechay Brassica rapa. Experiments were carried out in a residential lot in Brgy. Punta Taytay, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. Four set-ups were made with three replicates each. Each set-up corresponded to one compost treatment: treatment (A) was the rice straw compost, treatment (B) was the sugarcane trash compost, treatment (C) was the combination of rice straw and sugarcane trash compost, and treatment (D) served as the control in which no compost was added. The results of the statistical tests showed that there was a significant increase in the growth of pechay plants treated with the three different types of composts as compared to the pechay plants treated with the control. Among all the treatments, pechay plants treated with the combination of rice straw and sugarcane trash compost showed the highest growth yield in terms of the mean plant height (19.61 cm), mean fresh weight (44.95 g), and mean number of leaves per plant (8.99) at the time of harvest. Results also that showed that there was no significant difference in the mean fresh weight and mean number of leaves per plant at the time of harvest in pechay plants treated with the rice straw compost and the sugarcane trash compost.Item Rhizosphere fungal diversity of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza in Mag-aba, Pandan, AntiqueBolivia, Marielle Angeli D. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)Fungi are popularly known to be both ecologically and economically important but knowledge about its diversity particularly fungi located in the rhizosphere of mangroves is poorly known. Fungal population in rhizosphere are closely linked to plant health and growth, function as decomposers of plant residues, antagonize pathogens, and provider of nutrients. However, few studies have been done on this group in the mangroves. The study aimed to assess the rhizosphere fungal diversity of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza in Mag-aba. Pandan, Antique. Specifically, it aimed to (1) isolate, characterize, identify and classify the fungi collected. (2) determine the overall species composition and (3) quantify fungal load in terms of colony forming units (CFU/g). A total of 16 morphological species were identified belonging to four genera namely Aspergillus, Penicillium, Acremonium, Neosartorya and five unknown species of Hyphomycetes. The frequently occurring species in this study were similar to the findings from previous studies such as Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Fungal load (CFU/g) was quantified using two types of media, Com meal agar and Potato dextrose agar. Both culture media obtained a high fungal load quantify (5.0xl04) which is near the typical fungal load of a healthy fertile soil. Shannon-Weiner, Shannon's equitability and Simpson diversity were 2.20, 0.92 and 0.90, respectively. The results suggest that there is a low diversity consistent with previous reports. Thus, more studies should be conducted in other mangrove areas to have a more comprehensive assessment of the diversity and status of rhizosphere fungi in mangrove ecosystems.Item Analysis of the gut contents of largehead hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Surigao Del SurBarros, Andrea Philine R. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)The traditional gut content analysis is one of the methods used which investigates feeding interactions, specifically those belonging to the aquatic food webs. The ribbonfish, Trichiurus lepturus is an economically important fish, and due to its high demand to other south-east Asian countries especially in the Philippines, there is a targeted fishery for this resource. However, the catch of this species in the country has declined recently. Since feeding habits are fundamental to understanding the ecology of a community, this study aimed to analyze the gut contents of Trichiurus lepturus. A total of 66 guts were examined in the study. The size ranged from 101-505 mm in total length. They fed mostly on fishes including Encrasicholina sp., and shrimps such as Acetes, Penaeus, and Lucifer. Moreover, there was an occurrence of cannibalism but only larger individuals. Microplastics were also evident in most of the size classes.Item Temporal variation in the subtidal macroinfaunal composition of a NaGISA seagrass bed in southern Guimaras, Philippines between 2015 and 2016Bacabac, Earl Jeroh I. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)Seagrass meadows are amongst the most abundant and diverse ecosystems when it comes to biodiversity but due to stress induced by natural and anthropogenic factors, a worldwide decline threatens the vital ecological functions of these habitats. Studying the infauna provides clues and information about the complexity of seagrass ecosystems and provides information that would facilitate better seagrass area management and associated conservation efforts. The NaGISA sampling protocol was conducted in Calaparan seagrass bed in TINMAR, Guimaras, Philippines between Sept. 2015 and 2016. Overall macrofaunal density was recorded at 21,954.80 ± 36,109.62 ind.m'2 with macrofaunal density higher in 2015 than in 2016 albeit, insignificant except for capitellid polychaetes. Community structure analysis also found similarity in dominance patterns in the subtidal zone with other soft-bottom macrofaunal studies in the Philippines with polychaetes, nematodes, and crustaceans as the respective dominant macrofaunal groups observed. Dominant polychaete families were also found to be cosmopolitan and opportunistic. Granulometric analysis characterized the sediment as pebble to medium sand with mid phi values ranging from -3.69 to 1.10 but poor sorting in all sampling points was observed. Cymodoceaceans dominated the subtidal zone in both years (Halodule pinnifolia in 2015; Cymodocea rotundata in 2016). Correlation analysis showed macrofaunal densities to have a significantly strong negative relationship with sorting index and percent gravel while a strong positive relationship with percent seagrass cover. The poor sediment sorting, coarse sediment character, and seagrass cover were the primary factors influencing the observed decrease in macrofaunal density but the decrease is considered normal for the variability of macrofauna in the area. A clearer picture of macrofaunal interactions would be provided with comparison to intertidal macrofauna of the area in the sampling years and data on additional factors that were not measured in the study.Item Dengue knowledge, policies, and Aedes Larval population in selected low and high dengue priority areas in Miagao, IloiloAmihan, April Rose D.; Basco, Arriane Mae P.; Escosia, Edmon B.; Monsale, April Joy P.; Solis, Jann Christian V.; Varon, Marianne Joy C. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the knowledge, practices, and Aedes larval populations between low and high dengue priority areas of Miagao, Iloilo. Questionnaire-guided interviews were conducted to assess the knowledge and practices of the study population. Larval surveys were done to determine Aedes larval populations, expressed as House Index (HI), Container Index (CI), and Breteau Index (BI). Results showed that respondents from the low priority area were more knowledgeable on dengue than the respondents from the high priority area (p<0.05). Dengue preventive practices were found to be the same for both low and high priority areas. There was, however, no significant relationship between dengue knowledge and dengue preventive measures (p<0.05). Results from (he larval survey revealed that both low and high priority areas have HI and BI above the WHO standards (HI<5%; BI<20) and are considered “high risk” areas. Lastly, age (p<0.01) and educational attainment (p<0.05) were found to affect an individual’s dengue knowledge.Item Phytoplankton assemblages in contrasting seasons in the area of Banate Bay, Iloilo, PhilippinesAlvarez, Rose Ann T. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)Banate Bay in Iloilo is one of the major food and occupation contributors in the Panay Island because of its rich biodiversity. This study investigated the phytoplankton assemblage and their diversity with respect to the contrasting seasons namely; December 2012 and June 2013 on the pre-selected nine (9) stations of the Coastal Ecosystem Conservation and Adaptive Management (CECAM) Project. Physicochemical parameters such as salinity, turbidity, DO, and pH did not display seasonality but total suspended solids (TSS) did, with increased values resulting from run-off from the surrounding watershed and rivers. Principal Component Analysis divided the stations during the two months into groups. Station B3 during June 2013 possessed low salinity level, low turbidity level, low pH level and a very high DO level. While the other stations during June 2013 and all the stations during December 2012 possessed higher salinity levels, higher turbidity levels, higher pH levels and lower DO levels. While the PC2 of PCA divided the stations according to the TSS levels and the temperature. All stations during December 2012 showed characteristics of higher TSS levels and lower temperatures while stations during June 2013 were observed to have low TSS levels and higher temperatures. A total of 86 genera falling under six families were identified from the samples, namely: bacillariophyceae (49 genera), dinophyceae (24 genera), cyanophyceae (6 genera), silicoflagellate (4 genera), chlorophyceae (1 genus), euglenophyceae (1 genus) and Miscellaneous (2 genera). In December 2012, a total of 84 genera were identified and 86 genera in June 2013. The top 10 genera with the highest mean densities were Bacteriastrum, Chaetoceros, Eutintinnus, Guinardia, Leptocylindricus, Lioloma, Protoperidinium, Thallasiothrix and Trichodesmium. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed that water temperature and TSS were the most significant parameters influencing the distribution and seasonal shift in phytoplankton families and genera such as Bacillariophyceae, Others (composed of Euglenophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Myrionecta, and Globigerina), Protoperidinium, and Guinardia. pH and DO had minor influence on phytoplankton distribution. Shannon- Wiener diversity index as a pollution index suggested that the study area was incipiently polluted at stations Bl, B2, and B3 and marginally polluted at Stations B4, B5, GN1, GN2, GS1, and GS2. Despite potential effects of various human activities, the water quality and phytoplankton assemblage of this area has not reached an alarming situation. The current study provides valuable baseline data.
