Item Lived experiences of Ilonggo informal caregivers providing home care to COVID-19 patientsBolinas, Nicole Marie M.; Alagos, Yziel Gale B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-05)This is a phenomenological study that sought to examine the lived experiences of informal caregivers providing home care to COVID-19 patients. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), five (5) Ilonggo informal caregivers who provided home care to COVID-19-positive household members participated in in-depth interviews. Results showed that home care during the pandemic involved additional protective measures and minimal contact with patients. While facing uncertainties without proper training and knowledge on caregiving much more on COVID-19, informal caregivers had to research and seek help from other experts. They also provided physical assistance in routine daily living activities as well as social and emotional support both to patients and other household members. The experience further warranted adjustments on their time management and emotional strength as the added responsibility of home care on top of work and studies had resulted in feelings of frustration and exhaustion. In spite of these challenges, being hands-on in providing care, social support from other family members, and hopefulness of patient recovery facilitated their experience. Informal caregivers then view and understand their experience as an accomplishment, a form of reciprocation to their family members who cared and provided for them, and as a part of their filial responsibility. Active institutional support is therefore recommended in order to ensure their physical and psychological health and well-being.Item Like mother, like daughter: Exploring the mother-daughter relationships and intergenerational early pregnanciesBohos, Maecy Antonette C.; Delgado, Ken Ryan T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-07)This qualitative study is a scientific investigation on the local contexts of intergenerational early pregnancy. It specifically looks into the relationships between mothers and daughters to uncover the underlying social realities that shape the phenomenon. Social Learning Theory is used to frame the study and to assist in the understanding of the mother-daughter relationships and intergenerational early pregnancy. To collect the data, this study used in-depth interviews of 5 motherdaughter dyads (N=10) from two provinces—North Cotabato and Antique. Following the interviews, the data was organized and analyzed using the approach Thematic Network Analysis. The results generated the 4 organizing themes with corresponding basic themes/subthemes: (1) lived experiences during early pregnancy with subthemes reactions to pregnancy, challenges experienced, coping mechanisms, and external support; (2) family dynamics with subthemes family status, physical and emotional distance, and parental monitoring; (3) mother-daughter communication with subthemes conversations, and sexual and reproductive health communication; and (4) daughter's sexual and reproductive health knowledge and behaviors with subthemes sources of SRH education, level of knowledge, and early sexual initiation. The study's findings suggest the need for parent-based or family-centered interventions regarding adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Early pregnancy becoming intergenerational among Filipino families further encourages the cycle of poverty.Item Value chain analysis of Lampirong (Placuna placenta) in Oton, IloiloBito-on, Edrian T.; Haro, Errielle Nicole M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-06)Lampirong (Placuna placenta) is a highly valued bivalve in the Philippines due to its economic value. It was once abundant in Oton and was overexploited, leading to its stock depletion. Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s (SEAFDEC) efforts to enhance the stock in Oton resulted in the resurgence of lampirong stock and industry. The lack of transparency in the lampirong industry and studies on the linkages between the actors in the lampirong business have gotten little to no attention following the resurgence of lampirong and the recovery of the shell craft industry after the depletion. A Value Chain Analysis (VCA) was conducted to evaluate the overall performance of the local lampirong industry following the stock enhancement. Using an interview schedule, the researchers gathered primary data from a total of 20 study participants. They were interviewed in the month of May and were grouped according to the tasks they carried out. The biggest player of the chain turned out to be the Institutional Buyers as they are the bulk buyers and sellers of lampirong in the market. The industry resembles a competitive market as the majority of participants were price takers and the products are homogenous. As the lampirong transforms from raw to processed forms, its net added value increases as it goes through the various actors. Lampirong processing incurred the highest cost but also generated the highest value-added. Diving lampirong was performed by men while processing and trading were dominated by women.Item Disorientation and queering action in distance education: The queer lived experiences of the queer Filipino teacherBalensoy, Timoteo C., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-05)Queer studies highlight that beyond the idea of gender and sexuality, queerness branches through a vast field of disciplines and focus, urging scholarly interest towards the queer phenomenological question regarding the peculiar and confusing experiences an individual acquires when occupying a particular space as well as the actions they do in a space. Utilizing Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology (2006) as the theoretical anchor for this inquiry, this study explored queer lived experiences through the experiences of disorientation and the queering actions of queer Filipino teachers; specifically, the mechanisms, the experiences, and the outcomes as queer Filipino teachers become challenged by the normativity of distance education, and how they addressed the challenges they experienced from the disorientation. Through interviews with eight (8) self-identified queer DepEd High School teachers from the provinces of Antique and Capiz from ages 24 to 42, this study identified that in the context of distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic, queer Filipino teachers experience disorientation through the challenges brought about by norms in the learning setup that prescribes specific actions, practices and strategies to avoid and to prioritize. As they reflect on their disorienting experiences, the queer Filipino teacher recognizes a need to change their perspective and pedagogies to orient themselves in the space of distance education. This leads them to enact queering actions through a pedagogical performance of going beyond what are obligated and expected of them, as informed by their identities as queer people, as teachers, and as queer teachers.Item Exploring gendered experiences and job satisfaction of female public lawyers in IloiloBalagosa, Andrea Marie D.; De la Cruz, Kish S.; Delen, Julie-Ann G.; Estocapio, Sharen Ilyich G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)Females are now well-represented in the traditionally male-dominated field of the legal profession. However, in the Philippines, gender discrimination, such as inequality in hierarchical positions and work assignments, still prevails in the legal field. In addition, the multiple burdens females face hinders them from finding effective work-life balance and affect the general well-being of female public lawyers. Hence, this study aimed to explore female public lawyers' experiences and challenges that affect their job satisfaction. The study also examined the Public Attorney's Office (PAO) policies and practices to ensure gender equity in the workplace. The researchers utilized a descriptive research design and a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods to gather in-depth insights and provide a more comprehensive analysis. The research participants were selected through Purposive Sampling and were composed of female public lawyers working in Iloilo. The study revealed that female lawyers in PAO believe they neither experience any form of gender discrimination nor maltreatment in the office. However, the study results also indicate that patriarchal structures and views still abound in their workplaces which contribute to overall job satisfaction, along with multiple burdens, and socio-demographic variations. The researchers recommend that the PAO take further action regarding its institutional efforts to employ a more gendersensitive and inclusive approach to ensuring a healthy working dynamic and environment.Item Experiences of LGBT individuals with Christian upbringingBaguyo, Alec Jonavie A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-06)Christianity is one of the religions worldwide that promote heteronormativity, following their belief that it is “normal.” In the Philippines, wherein Roman Catholicism is the main religion, heterosexuality is the norm, and people who do not follow this feel a sense of conflict in terms of their religious and spiritual identity and their LGBT identity. This study explored the experiences of LGBT individuals with a Christian upbringing in the Western Visayas. A qualitative approach was employed and six participants were selected for an in-depth interview, the collected data was then analyzed using a thematic analysis wherein four themes emerged, growing up with a Christian upbringing, navigating through the experiences of being an LGBT and a Christian, perceived outcomes of the actions that LGBT individuals employed, and feelings elicited by the outcomes, which tells us the unique experiences of LGBT Christians.Item Factors affecting women's participation in small-scale fisheries in Miagao, IloiloAbordaje, Ira; Nocon, Kimberly (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-05)Small-scale fisheries is considered as a source of income that contributes to food security and livelihood sustainability, especially in coastal communities. However, women who fish are marginalized due to traditional gender roles. Their contributions to fisheries are frequently overlooked in economic analysis, fisheries management, and policy decisions. Women also uniquely experience multiple burdens due to gender roles and social expectations. This study analyzed the factors affecting women's decision to participate in small-scale fishing in Miagao, Iloilo. The study used surveys and the data were analyzed through binary logistic regression. Results showed that age, educational attainment, marital status, family income, and husband's income were significant in predicting women's participation. Furthermore, women are given secondary, easier tasks than men, participating in fisheries impacts women’s economic contribution and empowerment, and women in this industry still allot time for reproductive work despite spending most of their time accomplishing productive work in small-scale fisheries.
