Item The relationship of children's concern and the couple's empty-nest stress experiences with their relationship purposeCabarles, Irene Grace S.; Tan, Cesa, Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)This correlational study aimed to find out whether the degree of children’s concern for their parents and the empty-nest stress experiences of these parents have an effect on their relationship purpose. A total of 40 couples participated in the study. The Children’s Concern Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Relationship Purpose Scale were utilized for the data gathering. Generally, the results revealed that the higher the concern showed by the children to their empty-nest parents, the more likely that the empty-nest couple will focus on their marital relationship. However, the average amount of stress experienced by the empty-nest couples does not have a significant relationship with their relationship purpose.Item Organizational climate and levels of job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo CityBragancia, Imee Grace E.; Vergara, Catherine Joy C. (2004-03)This correlational study aimed to find out whether organizational climate has a significant relationship on job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City. A total of 44 respondents participated in the study. Thirty-two (32) nurses came from private hospitals, namely Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital and Iloilo Mission Hospital. While 12 nurses came from West Visayas State University Medical Center, which is a public hospital. The Work Climate Questionnaire by Deci (2000) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory by Maslach (1981) were utilized for data gathering. Generally, results revealed that the higher the nurses perceived autonomy support the lower their degree of burnout in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales. However, while private and public hospital nurses were satisfied with the autonomy support provided by their supervisors, they still reported a lack of personal accomplishment. The researchers recommend that future research should be done on correlates of personal and organizational factors on nurse burnout.Item Reproductive health awareness, problems, and health seeking practices of couples in fishing households in Sapian, CapizBonitillo, Sunshine Mae B.; Galapin, Danilyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The study sought to examine the reproductive health knowledge, problems and healthseeking practices of selected couples aged 15-49. Forty-six (46) couples served as respondents of the study. This study hypothesized that: 1) couples in fishing households reproductive health knowledge; 2) Couples in fishing households have numerous number of reported reproductive health problems; and 3) couples in fishing households have traditional health seeking practices. The Likert type of test, and open-ended questions were utilized for data gathering. The frequency, percentage distribution and average mean were used as a tool for analysis. The result show that couples in fishing households, have high level of reproductive health awareness. Female respondents in particular are aware of their reproductive health rights, birth control methods, and family planning than male respondents. In addition, the result reveals that the respondents have experienced several cases of reproductive health problems. However, they did not often seek medical attention. Instead, the respondents just visit the barangay health center for birth control supply and medicine for some ailments.Item Factors affecting compliance of Iloilo City jeepney drivers (Molo via City High and Jaro Mandurriao) with anti-smoking ordinance: An assessment of Local Government Unit (LGU) ordinance implementationBiboso, Rissa A.; Salar, Edmund B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The study sought to determine the factors affecting compliance of Iloilo City jeepney drivers to the anti-smoking ordinance, as well as assess the implementing mechanisms of the LGU in enforcing the said ordinance. Forty three (43) jeepney drivers plying two routes served as the respondents of the study, seven drivers from the Molo via City High route and thirty six respondents from Jaro Mandurriao. Likert scales were used to measure the respondents’ level of awareness regarding the ordinance and level of perception of legitimacy of authority. On the other hand, rating scales were used to rank the respondents’ reasons for compliance to the anti-smoking ordinance. Results showed that age and educational attainment do not affect the level of awareness and perception of legitimacy of authority of the jeepney drivers. Furthermore, the primary reasons for the jeepney drivers’ compliance to the anti-smoking ordinance were their level of awareness of the ordinance, the P300.00 fine for violators, confiscation of driver’s license and the presence of the Anti-smoking Task Force. Results showed that the implementing mechanisms employed by the LGU were effective.Item A case study of community-oriented policing system in two crime-prone barangays in Iloilo City under the jurisdiction of Police Precincts 1 and 3Bernaldez, Cristina A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study primarily deals with police -community relationship on the two crime- prone barangays in Iloilo City. It looked into the dynamics of police-community cooperation and collaboration as they geared towards in pursuing a safe place. It also examined their perception towards each other and public trust on police to establish partnership. In the process of achieving a safe community, they were challenged by the issues and problems towards crime prevention. In order to answer the objectives, the researcher used survey and key informant interviews to serve as primary data. Library research at UPV and Camp Delgado was also done. The findings of the study revealed that barangay residents were willing to cooperate on crime prevention efforts by means of attending civic undertakings and reporting crimes. The police and other support groups also took participation by patrolling and giving feedbacks, as well as participation on lectures and trainings for public education and information. However, it showed that the police needed to initiate more lectures and trainings as well as dialogues. Communities have positive perception on police performance, they also trusted the police regardless of the issues raised by some of them. On the contrary, the police saw the residents as hostile. However, as they employed community interactions and strategies they have seen transformations on the behavior and lifestyle of the residents. Most of the issues and problems raised by the residents were more on police duty, visibility, and communication. The key informants raised the issues and problems on crime activities such as drug addiction and thefts, use of sports and leisure equipment and peace and security. The efforts on the employment of COPS on the two barangays seemed to be successful as manifested by the decline of crime rate.Item The relationship between selected social factors and adolescent pregnancy in Iloilo CityBautista, Joseph Raymund I.; Funclara, Melinda Tordesillas (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)This study attempts to ascertain if there is a relationship between selected social factors and adolescent pregnancy. Specifically, it aims to find out if school engagement, parental supervision, foster and kinship care, religiosity, contraceptive knowledge, and mass media exposure is related to adolescent pregnancy. The researchers hypothesized that there is a relationship between these selected factors and adolescent pregnancy. Adolescent mothers between 14 to 21 years old and were either pregnant or had given birth before December 2003 from three barangays in Iloilo City were interviewed. The gathered data were then subjected to Yates corrected chi-square test of independence to find out if there is any relationship between the dependent and independent variables. It was found out that school engagement, parental supervision, level of religiosity, exposure to mass media, and knowledge in contraceptive use have no relationship with adolescent pregnancy. On the other hand, foster and kinship care was found to have a relationship with adolescent pregnancy. For future research directions, the researchers recommend to those who are interested in adolescent pregnancy to explore the interrelationship between the factors that contribute to adolescent pregnancy. The researchers further suggest that other factors, such as economic status, be explored. Increasing the number of respondents might also be helpful. Finally, the possibility that staying away from compromising situations with the opposite sex is an effective factor to prevent adolescent pregnancy could be an interesting topic.Item Exposure to sexually violent films: Judgements on domestic violenceBasco, Wendy G.; Gallardo, Bonnie L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)This study aimed to know if exposures to sexually violent films have effect toward judgments on domestic violence victim. The three hypotheses were: 1) There is a significant effect from gradual exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim ; 2) There is a significant effect from sudden exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim and 3) There is a significant effect from non-exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim . This study is experimental which made use of randomized group design or (between group design). The participants of this study were composed of thirty (30) students of UPV Miag-ao, enrolled in Psychology 101 during the second semester on Academic year 2002-2003. The participants were chosen using the random sampling. They were equally distributed to three (3) treatment groups (2 experimental and 1 control group) with ten (10) participants each group. This research project utilized Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, Acceptance of Interpersonal Violence Scale and Myth on Domestic Violence Scale to measure the judgments of participants toward domestic violence victims. Splices from three films (Friday the 13th Part II, American Psycho and I Spit on Your Grave) were also used. The result of the study F (2,29) = 3.35 p< .05 yielded that there is a significant effect of non-exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim.Item Sources of stress, coping strategies and social support among seafarers of Leon, IloiloBatin, Hazel C.; Torilla, Hanna Mae C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)The study sought to determine the sources of stress, coping strategies, and sources of social support of seafarers while they are on board. Twenty-three (23) male seafarers served as respondents, they were chosen using the convenience sampling. Questionnaires were utilized to study the variables under investigation. Results showed that seafarers faced problems on board related to their work, emotions, family and their work environmental adjustment. When it comes to managing stress on board, respondents used emotion-focused coping rather than problem-focused. They revealed that they received support from their friends and significant others, but their families were their primary social support.Item Prospects for a reproductive healthcare program in the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC): women inmates’ and IRC officials’ perceptions and recommendationsAlegre, Julie Anne B.; Amase, Jaisa Mhe A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)The study aimed to determine how women inmates and IRC officials understand the concept of reproductive health and what factors influenced such understanding. It likewise sought to find out the perceptions of women inmates with regards Prospective RH Program in the IRC and their recommendations for effective program implementation. It also sought to determine the IRC officials’ views regarding a Prospective RH Program as well as then suggestions for an effective program implementation. Using purposive sampling, fourteen women inmates and six IRC officials were regarded as respondents of the study. In-depth interview with the IRC officials and a focus group discussion with the women inmates were utilized to unearth respondents’ idea of reproductive health and its components such as family planning, reproductive health- related diseases (STDs/ AIDS, breast cancers and ovary cancers) and sexual violence. Results of the study revealed that most of the women inmates and two IRC official respondents have not heard the term reproductive health but they have some knowledge on its components. Women inmates’ idea of family planning pertained to the proper way of using contraceptive methods while IRC officials viewed it as an economic means to alleviate poverty. Women inmates regarded themselves as responsible for their own health to be free from STDs/ AIDS, breast and ovary cancers. According to the IRC officials, STDs/ AIDS were acquired through sexual intercourse; thus, women must refrain from engaging in sexual activities with different men. On the issue of sexual violence, women inmates believed that it occurs among couples with lack of communication. The IRC officials held the notion of patriarchal belief as the reason for the continuing occurrence of sexual violence. The traditional roles of male as being biologically aggressive and female as submissive tied both groups of respondents’ idea on sexual violence. These beliefs validated the occurrence of sexual violence in the society, restricting women to resist violence acts. Results also showed both group of respondents’ appreciation on the implementation of an RH Program in the IRC. They underscored the role of the government for the success of the program through substantial allocation of budget. Furthermore, IRC officials emphasized the cooperation of women inmates, while women inmates stressed the participation of the IRC officials for effective program implementation. Presenting all the findings of the study, a program on reproductive health must therefore be implemented in the IRC. This program must focus on the concept of reproductive health laid down by the International Conference on Population and Development. The patriarchal belief must be extinguishe,d empowering women and making them aware of the ideas that resisting violence and being free from reproductive health-related diseases are expressions of their reproductive rights. Government must see to it that marginalized women such as the women inmates must have easy access to reproductive healthcare services and programs.Item Some psychosocial factors in adolescents' acceptance of sexual mythsAgrasada, Frotzi Ann B.; Sagge, Stacey Marie N. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study investigated the relationships of psychosocial factors namely: family openness in communication, religiosity, attitude towards sex, and sexuality education with adolescents’ acceptance of sexual myths. One hundred (100) first year college students composed of 50 males and 50 females from a public school completed a series of survey instruments designed to measure the variables under investigation. Design of the study was correlational. To show relationships between variables, data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational statistic. Statistical analyses showed support for the relationship between religiosity and acceptance of sexual myths, that is, the higher the religiosity, the more is acceptance of sexual myths. The study also found support for the relationship between attitude towards sex and acceptance of sexual myths, that is, the more conservative is attitude towards sex the more is acceptance of sexual myths. However this result was obtained for male respondents only. The expected relationships for acceptance of sexual myths and the other variables were not supported in this study.
