The study also showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are relatively well adjusted in their life in the Philippines, which is manifested in their improved social interaction with the locals of Iloilo City. At the same time, they are generally well off as reflected on their spending patterns as compared to the Filipinos’ standard of living. They relatively spend more than an average Filipino would spend for food, transportation, clothing and many others for a certain period of time.

The relationship of children's concern and the couple's empty-nest stress experiences with their relationship purpose
Cabarles, Irene Grace S.; Tan, Cesa, Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
This correlational study aimed to find out whether the degree of children’s concern for their parents and the empty-nest stress experiences of these parents have an effect on their relationship purpose. A total of 40 couples participated in the study. The Children’s Concern Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Relationship Purpose Scale were utilized for the data gathering. Generally, the results revealed that the higher the concern showed by the children to their empty-nest parents, the more likely that the empty-nest couple will focus on their marital relationship. However, the average amount of stress experienced by the empty-nest couples does not have a significant relationship with their relationship purpose.

Problems in granting land title to Sulod Bukidnon: A case of Brgy. Jayobo, Lambunao, Iloilo
Brillo, Encel Joy F.; Verano, Renold M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-04)
This is a descriptive study at the same time exploratory in nature of the Sulod- Bukidnon’s claim of their ancestral domain title. Mainly, the researchers put emphasis on the mandate of the NCIP (National Commission on Indigenous Peoples) for the implementation of the IPRA including the requirements and processes for the granting of CADT (Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title); the Sulod- Bukidnons basis of ancestral domain claim, awareness of IPRA and NCIP, and Customary law with regards to land ownership; the factors that hinder the NCIP operations for the granting of Sulod- Bukidnon’s ancestral claim; and the accomplishments of NCIP and the Sulod- Bukidnon to date in the pursuit of their respective interest. It was found out in the study that any persons/community who are classified by the NCIP (based on genealogical survey), as indigenous could apply for CADT. The CADT recognizes the rights, possession and ownership of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) over their ancestral domains. According to RA 8371, IPRA, respect the indigenous concept of particular ownership of such land. The law also recognizes that the IP’s ancestral domain is a community property that belongs to all generations. NCIP on the other hand was created as the primary agency for the implementation of policies, plans, and programs to promote the rights and well being of the IPs. This two (IPRA and NCIP) actually are the support systems of the IPs on their claim to their ancestral domain title. It was also found out in the study that the indigenous people in the periphery have different notion/lack of idea regarding IPRA and NCIP, compared to the people in the center or near in the barangay proper, who are more aware of what the law and the commission was all about. The latter kind of people composed mainly of tribal leaders, who undergo a series of seminars conducted by NCIP. The IPs are the one who identify the areas covered by their ancestral domain. Basically, long- time occupancy and cultivation of land are the main condition for the ownership of the land. The NCIP on the other hand only facilitates the granting of land title to the IPs. There were several factors identified in these study that affected the granting of land title to the Sulod- Bukidnon. Mainly, conflict of interest between IPs and the other government agencies/institution, specifically, West Visayas State University- College of Agriculture and Forestry (WVSU-CAF), IPs lack of awareness about the law and the commission, and other personal interest.

Organizational climate and levels of job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City
Bragancia, Imee Grace E.; Vergara, Catherine Joy C. (2004-03)
This correlational study aimed to find out whether organizational climate has a significant relationship on job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City. A total of 44 respondents participated in the study. Thirty-two (32) nurses came from private hospitals, namely Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital and Iloilo Mission Hospital. While 12 nurses came from West Visayas State University Medical Center, which is a public hospital. The Work Climate Questionnaire by Deci (2000) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory by Maslach (1981) were utilized for data gathering. Generally, results revealed that the higher the nurses perceived autonomy support the lower their degree of burnout in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales. However, while private and public hospital nurses were satisfied with the autonomy support provided by their supervisors, they still reported a lack of personal accomplishment. The researchers recommend that future research should be done on correlates of personal and organizational factors on nurse burnout.

Besana, Nikkei M.; Cang, Marianne S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
Poverty incidence in the Philippines is continuously increasing. In line with this the government seeks for opportunities for poverty alleviation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in cooperation with the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV) offered different alternative livelihood projects in southern municipalities of Iloilo namely: Tigbauan (shrimp paste making), Miag-ao (salt making) and San Joaquin (fish sauce making). The study described the socio- demographic profiles of the beneficiaries of the projects along with the problems encountered during and after the project implementation. The production processes were also described along with the costs of production. Revenues and profit were derived based on the existing price of the product in the market. Private cost was identified from first up to fourth liquidations. Profit was calculated in every livelihood project and accounted to 728.34 Php for shrimp paste making in Tigbauan, 2,205.54 for salt making Php in Miagao and 1,570 Php for fish sauce making in San Joaquin per individual. Payback period derived was 1.07 that means the initial investment will be recovered in no less than a year. Return on investment was 0.93, which implies that for every peso invested, 1.14 Php returns to the investment

Factors affecting the people's advocacy in Barangay San Pedro, San Jose, Antique
Berbolla, Nelry Joy P.; Juada, Kristine Anne P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)
This study sought to determine the factors that lead people to advocate or not on the issue. It wanted to find out if there was a relationship between (a) educational attainment, (b) annual family income, (c) personal awareness on the issue, and (d) perceived health and environmental advantages or disadvantages, and people’s advocacy. The study was conducted in Barangay San Pedro, San Jose, Antique with 320 respondents. Self-administered questionnaires which included a translation in Hiligaynon were given to these respondents. The questionnaire has two parts, (a) the respondents’ educational attainment and annual family income; (b) the Likert-type scale composed of a number of statements designed to determine the relationship of advocacy to personal awareness on the issue, and perceived health and environmental advantages or disadvantages of the issue or project. Hence, the response options of the respondents for this scale were strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree and strongly agree. Using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, the study yielded the following results: a negligible relationship between advocacy and educational attainment, a negligible relationship between advocacy and annual family income, a weak relationship between advocacy and personal awareness on the issue, and a negligible relationship between advocacy and perceived health, and environmental advantages or disadvantages of the issue or project. Simply, out of the listed four factors that may affect the people’s advocacy, only the personal awareness on the issue had the possibility of affecting the people’s advocacy. All the others were proven to have no effect on the people’s advocacy.

The relationship between selected social factors and adolescent pregnancy in Iloilo City
Bautista, Joseph Raymund I.; Funclara, Melinda Tordesillas (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)
This study attempts to ascertain if there is a relationship between selected social factors and adolescent pregnancy. Specifically, it aims to find out if school engagement, parental supervision, foster and kinship care, religiosity, contraceptive knowledge, and mass media exposure is related to adolescent pregnancy. The researchers hypothesized that there is a relationship between these selected factors and adolescent pregnancy. Adolescent mothers between 14 to 21 years old and were either pregnant or had given birth before December 2003 from three barangays in Iloilo City were interviewed. The gathered data were then subjected to Yates corrected chi-square test of independence to find out if there is any relationship between the dependent and independent variables. It was found out that school engagement, parental supervision, level of religiosity, exposure to mass media, and knowledge in contraceptive use have no relationship with adolescent pregnancy. On the other hand, foster and kinship care was found to have a relationship with adolescent pregnancy. For future research directions, the researchers recommend to those who are interested in adolescent pregnancy to explore the interrelationship between the factors that contribute to adolescent pregnancy. The researchers further suggest that other factors, such as economic status, be explored. Increasing the number of respondents might also be helpful. Finally, the possibility that staying away from compromising situations with the opposite sex is an effective factor to prevent adolescent pregnancy could be an interesting topic.

    Punjabi Indians in Iloilo City
Acosa, Jenelie A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
Punjabi migrants can be found in the various parts of Iloilo City. They have been part already of the lives of many Ilonggos. A study concerning them would help the Ilonggos understand these people better. This would also be valuable in the promotion of harmony and understanding between these migrants and the Ilonggos. Furthermore it would also bridge the gap that existed between these two groups of people. This study is about Punjabi migrants in Iloilo City. It focuses on the factors that influenced them to move to Iloilo City, their life, future prospects as well as difficulties encountered and adjustments taken in their stay in Iloilo City. Specifically this study attempts to a) gather basic information about Punjabi migrants in Iloilo City b) identify and discuss the factors behind their migration to Iloilo City c) determine the difficulties encountered by these migrants and the adjustments they have taken to cope with these difficulties that they have encountered d) describe their life in Iloilo City e) determine the prospects regarding their business and back migration. The study made use of the library-research method as well as individual and group interviews of both Punjabi migrants and selected Ilonggo informants in order to meet the objectives of this study. Several factors influenced the Punjabi migrants to move to Iloilo City. Some of these factors can be attributed to their place of origin. These factors include: lack of economic opportunities, hesitance to go into farming, unfavorable living conditions, and limited community amenities. On the other hand, there are factors that can be attributed to their place of destination, Iloilo City. These factors include: presence of friends and relatives, better economic opportunities and availability and accessibility to community services. In Iloilo City, they encountered difficulties that they were able to adjust. They engaged in the business of peddling and lending for them to earn their living. They still preserve some of their own customs and practices identifiable to them, although they are now living in Iloilo City. In the future, they would like to expand their business, and they would like to entertain the possibility of back migration.
