Item Resident's assessment of life in Asilo de MoloCabrias, Ruby Daryl B.; Cortes, Rossan F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)There is an increasing number of elderly living in institutions today. This is due to the fact that they are abandoned or don’t have a family to take care of them. As such, the researchers are interested to study how the elderly assess their life inside the institution. The primary aim of the study is to know the elderlies’ assessment of life in Asilo de Molo. The other objectives of the study are: (1) Describe the organizational structure of Asilo de Molo; (2) Know the profile of the elderly residents in Asilo de Molo; (3) Determine whether elderlies’ personal assessment of life in Asilo de Molo varies with the means by which they were admitted in the institution. The study was conducted from August to December 2005 in Asilo de Molo- a home for the aged located at Avanceña Street, Iloilo City. Data was collected using the survey method. Twenty elderly residents of Asilo de Molo ages 60 years old and over were interviewed using the interview schedule. The respondents are either referred to or personally decided to stay in Asilo de Molo. Key informant interview was also used to gather data. The researchers interviewed the staff to ask about the organizational structure of the institution and the roles and responsibilities of those who compose it, the number of elderly residents and their socio- demographic profile and the criteria and process of admission to Asilo de Molo. The organizational structure of Asilo de Molo is composed of the Board of Trustees, the Administrator, the Administrative Council and the five Coordinators namely: the Pastoral Ministry Coordinator, Social Service Coordinator, Residential Care Coordinator, Administrative Service Coordinator and the Marillac Renewal Center Coordinator. The survey reveals that most residents of Asilo de Molo have the age between 60 years old and 85 years old. They are mostly women. Most of them are also single or widowed who have no immediate family member to take care of them. The results also show that residents who either personally decide or referred to stay in Asilo de Molo are happy and contented with their life. Even though some referred residents are lonely and want to leave the place, many want to spend the rest of their lives inside the institution. The researchers seek to recommend that more studies about the elderly be done since there are only few researches pertaining to them. Spending more time with the elderly and interviews with the staffs can lead to better understanding of the study.Item An analysis of the factors affecting women's decision to participate in the informal sector of Iloilo CityCabrera, Ma. Luz Sophia L.; Gonzaga, Lenny S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The study looked into the factors affecting women’s decision to participate in either the informal or the formal sector in the City Proper district of Iloilo City. The study has 126 respondents who were randomly chosen from the four barangays of Iloilo City proper namely; General Hughes, Ortiz, Rizal Pala-Pala I, and Rizal Pala- Pala II. Fifty percent of the respondents were women who are working in the informal sector as they are the focus of the study. The other half of the respondents is the women working in the formal sector of the economy. The dependent variable is a dichotomous variable assuming the value of 1 if the respondent prefers working in the informal sector and 0 if otherwise. The independent variable identified for the study are the: age of the respondent, number of years in school, number of children below 7 years of age in the household, civil status, household size, status in the household, household annual income, respondent’s other sources of income. The equation was estimated using binary logistic regression. Multivariate analysis revealed that age of respondent, number of years schooling, number of children below 7 years of age in the household and the status in household are significant within the 5% level of significance. Moreover, the chi- square value of 40.88 which is also significant at 5% level shows that the model is significant in determining the factors affecting the decision to participate in either the informal or the formal sector.Item The effect of perceiver's gender and masculinity on male masculinity performing female streotypic rolesCabrera, Gresilita Liza B.; Ochon, Maybelle Lalaine T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-10)This study was designed to examine the effects of perceiver’s gender and masculinity cues on male masculinity performing female stereotypic roles. 60 participants consisting of thirty males and thirty females, were randomly selected and assigned to four treatment groups. The groups had been assessed using the Instrument which comprises three descriptions with five items for the first description and 10 items for both the second and third descriptions. A 2x2 factorial design and two-way between ANOVA were used with a 0.05 significance level. The results showed that perceiver’s gender did not affect perception but masculinity cues yielded a considerable mark. Both male and female responded remarkably on descriptions with high masculinity cues only. The results further indicated that there is no interaction between the two independent variables.Item Koreans in Iloilo City: Their lifestyles, social-psychological and cultural adjustmentCabangal, Joann; Ledesma, Chrisgel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study sought to know the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, social- psychological, and cultural adjustment of Korean visitors in Iloilo City, who were currently enrolled in Moohan Tutorial Services, Inc. However, the average amount of stress experienced by the empty-nest couples does not have a significant relationship with their relationship purpose.Item Problems in granting land title to Sulod Bukidnon: A case of Brgy. Jayobo, Lambunao, IloiloBrillo, Encel Joy F.; Verano, Renold M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-04)This is a descriptive study at the same time exploratory in nature of the Sulod- Bukidnon’s claim of their ancestral domain title. Mainly, the researchers put emphasis on the mandate of the NCIP (National Commission on Indigenous Peoples) for the implementation of the IPRA including the requirements and processes for the granting of CADT (Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title); the Sulod- Bukidnons basis of ancestral domain claim, awareness of IPRA and NCIP, and Customary law with regards to land ownership; the factors that hinder the NCIP operations for the granting of Sulod- Bukidnon’s ancestral claim; and the accomplishments of NCIP and the Sulod- Bukidnon to date in the pursuit of their respective interest. It was found out in the study that any persons/community who are classified by the NCIP (based on genealogical survey), as indigenous could apply for CADT. The CADT recognizes the rights, possession and ownership of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) over their ancestral domains. According to RA 8371, IPRA, respect the indigenous concept of particular ownership of such land. The law also recognizes that the IP’s ancestral domain is a community property that belongs to all generations. NCIP on the other hand was created as the primary agency for the implementation of policies, plans, and programs to promote the rights and well being of the IPs. This two (IPRA and NCIP) actually are the support systems of the IPs on their claim to their ancestral domain title. It was also found out in the study that the indigenous people in the periphery have different notion/lack of idea regarding IPRA and NCIP, compared to the people in the center or near in the barangay proper, who are more aware of what the law and the commission was all about. The latter kind of people composed mainly of tribal leaders, who undergo a series of seminars conducted by NCIP. The IPs are the one who identify the areas covered by their ancestral domain. Basically, long- time occupancy and cultivation of land are the main condition for the ownership of the land. The NCIP on the other hand only facilitates the granting of land title to the IPs. There were several factors identified in these study that affected the granting of land title to the Sulod- Bukidnon. Mainly, conflict of interest between IPs and the other government agencies/institution, specifically, West Visayas State University- College of Agriculture and Forestry (WVSU-CAF), IPs lack of awareness about the law and the commission, and other personal interest.Item The dynamics in the patterns and changes of party affiliation of municipal candidates in the last three local elections in Barotac Nuevo, IloiloBraña, Lenirose A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)This is a descriptive study on the party affiliation of municipal candidates in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo. More specifically, this study attempted to determine the relevance of party affiliation and to analyse the dynamics in the patterns and changes of party affiliation of municipal candidates. A personal interview was conducted to a sample of informants. The study reveals that the relevance of party affiliation is mostly for convenience, organized campaign programs and financial support; the personality-oriented politics dominated the political arena of Barotac Nuevo that nobody can influence the victory of a candidate but his own self; that municipal candidates stay in the same political party because of personal relationships, convenience, a good leadership and it is an administration party; that the change of party affiliation was caused by the candidates’ ambition to hold public office, to progress in their political career, personal grudges and discontentment of other party-mates and convenience; that what greatly influenced the candidates to win is their personality and not on whether they remain or change their party affiliation; and that it is difficult to run independently if the candidate lacks the money, the fame and the personality to meet the demands of the voters.Item Organizational climate and levels of job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo CityBragancia, Imee Grace E.; Vergara, Catherine Joy C. (2004-03)This correlational study aimed to find out whether organizational climate has a significant relationship on job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City. A total of 44 respondents participated in the study. Thirty-two (32) nurses came from private hospitals, namely Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital and Iloilo Mission Hospital. While 12 nurses came from West Visayas State University Medical Center, which is a public hospital. The Work Climate Questionnaire by Deci (2000) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory by Maslach (1981) were utilized for data gathering. Generally, results revealed that the higher the nurses perceived autonomy support the lower their degree of burnout in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales. However, while private and public hospital nurses were satisfied with the autonomy support provided by their supervisors, they still reported a lack of personal accomplishment. The researchers recommend that future research should be done on correlates of personal and organizational factors on nurse burnout.
