Item Electoral campaign of mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 electionCababasay, Ivy C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-10)This is a descriptive study of the electoral campaign of the six mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 election. The 1992 Leon mayoral candidates were Romulo Cabana, Neri Cabsaba. Alejandro Caelian. Jaime Calosing. Rodolfo Camarista and Ismael Candolada. This study aims to present a profile of the 1992 Leon mayoral candidates: to determine the campaign resources; to analyze the campaign organization and the campaign strategies of the mayoral candidates during the electoral campaign: to analyze the voters' choice and perceptions of the 1992 Leon mayoral electoral campaign; and, to analyze the electoral campaign of the mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon. To satisfy these objectives, the researcher interviewed the mayoral candidates, some of their family members, their campaign staff and/or their representatives. A questionnaire was also formulated and was administered to the respondents. The findings of the study reveal that almost all of the mayoral candidates came from prominent families. Most of them came from the upper-middle class families except for Cabana and Cabsaba who considered their family as belonging to the lower class. Except for Romulo Cabana, all mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon were college graduates. Except for Calosing and Camarista all four mayoral candidates had ran for an elective office prior to the 1992 election. The campaign resources, particularly the material resources of a candidate were the determining factor in the success of his electoral campaign. It was also found out that most of the mayoral candidates have no formal structural organization in their electoral campaign except for Cabana and Calosing. Campaign strategies common among the mayoral candidates were holding of caucus in the barangays, distribution of leaflets, stickers, sample ballots and posting of streamers and other campaign materials. Character assasination and mudslinging were also present in the campaign. Voters were more interested in the personal issues raised against the mayoral candidates than their proposed programs of government or public concerns. They (voters) voted for the mayoral candidate based on the latter's personality or personal attributes. Personalities are more remembered than social and political issues. Although there was vote-buying in the 1992 election, the mayoral candidates and the voters themselves considered it peaceful and orderly due to the absence of violence.Item The political elites of Tubungan, Iloilo: Their characteristics and contributions to the municipality, 1992-2001Beriones, Beben C.; Garbe, Adeste B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This is a descriptive study on the characteristics and contributions of the political elites of Tubungan, Iloilo to their Municipality from 1992 to 2001. It is focused on the mayors, the vice-mayors and the members of the Sangguniang Bayan. The researchers presented the characteristics and the contributions they have made for the development of their municipality. The political elites’ contributions were measured in terms of the programs, the projects and the ordinances they have made. There are three factors that helped the researchers in the discussion of the topic: (1) The political careers of the political elites, (2) the characteristics of the political elites, and (3) their contributions to the municipality of Tubungan, Iloilo. In as much as ideal and necessary, the researchers tried to gather all documents about the topic, and tried to interview all the political elites; however, it was not possible due to some constraints like some documents were already lost, and two of the political elites are already living outside the province. The findings of the study is that the political elites of Tubungan share some common characteristics such as: (1) all have landholdings, (2) all are active members of organizations in their municipality, (3) all are earning more than Pl00, 000 a year, (4) all are Roman Catholics, & (5) all are contributing to their municipality’s development. The mayors’ contributions are viewed in terms of projects and programs such as infrastructures, delivery of social services and improved agricultural productions. For the vice-mayors and the Sangguniang Bayan members, their contributions are measured in terms of the number of ordinances that they have legislated aimed at improving the lives of the people of Tubungan. Finally, the people of Tubungan viewed their contributions to be beneficial.Item Economic profitability of shrimp (Acets spp.) processing in Barangay Atabayan, Tigbauan, IloiloBelleza, Rey M.; Saloria, Jet R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-04)In general, this study aims to determine the economic profitability of shrimp processing in Barangay Atabayan. Specifically, the study describes the sociodemographic profile of the processors and the costs incurred in processing. It also identifies the problems encountered by the processors, and describes the production and pre-sale practices of the business. This study uses the census method in data gathering. All the eleven processors served as respondents. An interview translated into Kinaray-a was used to gather information from processors. The respondents were classified according to the method of processing they used: (1) fermentation, that produces guinamos and (2) drying, that produces kalkag. Seven of the processors were male and 4 were female; their average age was 54.45 years. They have been into shrimp processing at an average of 25.91 years. They do not rely on shrimp processing alone. Some of them engaged in farming, fishmeal selling, fishing and part-time driving. The processors had positive operating profit per-kg-of-produce per production day. In general, the processors had a positive financial profit per-kg-of-produce but the processor engaged in drying only incurred a negative financial profit. Fermentation had a positive pure economic profit per-kg-of-produce while drying had a negative pure economic profit. For drying to be profitable, costs of variable inputs must be considered. Results showed that it is more profitable to venture in both drying and fermentation because of a higher pure economic profit compared with venturing in fermentation or drying only. Weather, uncertainty of payments of some wholesalers, entry of illegal fisher folk from neighboring towns and the outlawing of sungkit, a gear used in catching the shrimps, were the problems faced by the shrimp processors.Item A descriptive study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminismBelen, Marian Davie (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This is a gender study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminism. This study aims to describe the perceptions of UPV CAS female students on family, marriage, employment, rights and duties, feminism, feminist movement and feminists, contemporary Filipina and economics and politics, and to determine if their perceptions are feminist in leaning. The researcher conducted a survey by giving out questionnaires to UPV CAS female students. Moreover, gender-related materials in the library were also utilized such as books, magazines, journals, etc. The respondents were chosen through the stratified random sampling technique. The study reveals that the responses, considering all year levels, do not seem to vary considerably. There has not been so much difference in their responses although younger students seemed quite conservative in their outlook in some matters. The study also reveals that the respondents had a positive perception towards feminism since most of their responses on the items were feminist in leaning. Most of their responses indicate that women these days are more or less enjoying a favorable status in society, although they still believe that gender inequality still exists. Moreover, they think that feminism is still necessary for Filipinas.Item Locus of control of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers: Its relation to their academic adjustmentBataan, Arminda A.; Losare, Anna Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study sought to determine the kind of locus of control of the respondents and the level of academic adjustment as seen in their grade point averages. The researchers aimed to find out if there exists a relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. This study was patterned on a previous research on the relationship between the same variables but this study utilized a different instrument and respondents came from Iloilo province. Fifteen (15) college students whose fathers were imprisoned at the time that they were enrolled served as respondents of the study. All respondents came from Iloilo, 33% of which are from Iloilo City and the remaining 67% are from the municipalities. Their ages range from 17-24. Respondents were selected using the snowball method. Respondents were asked to answer the Trice Academic Locus of Control Scale. The scale is composed of 28 items answerable by true or false determined the kind of locus of control of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. In addition, the respondents were asked to submit their copy of grades of the previous semester to determine how well they adjust academically. The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation is r=0.26 with a rcrit=0.441 at 0.05 alpha. This signifies that indeed there is a significant relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. However, it revealed a weak positive correlation between locus of control and academic adjustment. The findings imply that locus of control is not the sole cause or factor for academic adjustment. The cause or source of a well-adjusted academic performance of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers may therefore be attributed to other factors such as economic and social support coming from family and friends. Such factors could even lead to a poor academic performance. Lastly, academic adjustment and locus of control vary among the respondents, which suggest individual differences among themItem Fishermen's Association of Malalison Island: Its role in managing the fishery resourcesBanagodos, June Arthur; Santotome, Jan (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04-01)This study, describes the evolution of FAMI as a fishery association and the role it played in the management of the fishery resources. Objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the emergence of the FAMI organization in the island barangay of Malalison, Culasi, Antique; (2) Document the support it obtained from government and nongovernmental partner organizations (i.e., SEAFDEC, PROCESS and the LGU); (3) to analyze the members’ understanding of, and participation in the collective management of fishery resources in Malalison Island; (4) to identify the changing roles assumed by FAMI members with regards to the sharing of management authority and responsibilities with government and other institutions for the management of fishery resources, and; (5) to analyze the ways by which FAMI activities can further contribute to the local community. FAMI effectively co-manage coastal fishery resources. This organizational activity also helps in the improvement of the living conditions of the small-scale fishers as well as decelerates the rapid depletion of the marine resources. Despite substantial trainings/seminars (pertaining to organizational strengthening, cooperative management, etc.,) FAMI members received from partner organizations, the association has problems on organizational matters, specially when partner organization SEAFDEC AQD formally turned over the full responsibility in managing the fishery resources to FAMI. This problem can be attributed to people’s attitude towards fellow member-fishers. People tend to look at NGOs or development programs as source of grants. The dole-out mentality of the people in marginalized communities such as Malalison is very prevalent. Interest in the program is not on how to sustain their development initiatives but more on how to survive and secure themselves first. The spirit of cooperativism is lost.Item The portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion ReynaBalsamo, Ethel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-04)This study deals with gender analysis on the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. Its aims to (1) identify the role of women portrayed in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, (2) to describe the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, and (3) to explain the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. The twelve films of Carlos Siguion Reyna were briefly presented to aid for further understanding of the study. Different roles of women portrayed in the films were enumerated and were explained briefly into their portrayal. Violence against women was categorized into physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Finally, a gender analysis was used to assess the portrayal of violence against women in the films of Carlos Siguion Reyna. In this study, data were gathered through self-analysis of the ten films of Carlos Siguion Reyna with the help of some film reviews of his films. Violence against women is evident in the films of director and it comes in many forms, be it physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Patriarchy, women seen as sex object are some of the factors that contributed to the violence toward women and it happens in most social groups and all income levels. The ideas and images of women in reality are reinforced in the mass media on which people model their behavior and attitudes. Thus, indeed there is a relationship between the social condition of women in reality and the portrayal of violence against women in films.Item The effect of playing violent video games and gender on aggression among first year students in Iloilo National High SchoolBalicanta, Alexander John F.; Cacho, Charlotte J. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)The study was conducted to determine the effects of playing violent video games and gender on aggression among first-year high school students. The experimental design utilized two treatment groups and two control groups. The four groups consisted of (1) males who played the violent videogame; (2) females who played the violent videogame; (3) males who played the nonviolent videogame; and (4) females who played the nonviolent videogame. In this study, aggression was measured using the Direct and Indirect Aggression Scales (DIAS). The DIAS consists of 24 items that measure physical, verbal, and indirect aggression. Prior to the administration of the DIAS, the participants were first asked to play video games. Two groups were assigned to play a violent video game, and the other two groups played a nonviolent game. The participants’ scores in the DIAS were computed and analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with interaction. This is done to show if the variables type of video game played and gender significantly affect aggression among adolescents. The two-way ANOVA with interaction yielded three computed values of F. Results show that there is a significant F-ratio on the variable type of video game played. The obtained F is 5.45, and an F of 4.26 is required at the 0.05 level with 1 and 27 df. Since 5.45 is greater than 4.26, the null hypothesis is rejected. Thus, the conclusion is that the type of video game played has a significant effect on aggression among first-year high school students. However, the F-ratio derived for the variable gender was not significant. The obtained F is 3.59, and an F of 4.26 is required at the 0.05 level with 1 and 27 df. Since the value of F is less than 4.26, the null hypothesis on gender is accepted. Thus, gender has no significant effect on aggression among first-year high school students. The F ratio derived for the interaction of the two variables is also not significant. The computed value of F., which is only 0.297, is less than 4.26. The null hypothesis, thus, is rejected. This leads to the conclusion that the type of videogame played and gender do not interact to affect aggression.Item Health, social support, and life satisfaction of selected older persons in Asilo de MoloBacolor, Heidi F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study was undertaken in order to determine the current status of older persons in Asilo de Molo in terms of health, social support and life satisfaction. Eighteen (18) elders, four (4) males and fourteen (14) females were chosen through convenient sampling as respondents of this study. Katz'' Activities of Daily Living Scale, Lawton’s Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale and Dr. Andrew Goliszek’s Life Satisfaction Index were utilized to gather the necessary data. Using the mode, the frequencies and percentage distributions for each variable were tabulated and analyzed. Results showed that respondents are relatively in good health condition and that majority of the reported cases of disease and chronic conditions are linked to normal aging namely, poor vision, hypertension and arthritis. Moreover, a large percentage of the respondents can function fairly independently by themselves, which means they can perform at least 50% of the activities in the ADL and IADL scales with minor assistance from the social and health workers. In terms of social support, the findings are contradictory to previous researches that highlight the primary importance of family and relatives as sources of support, both in material and non-material aspects. Instead, the bottom-line lifelines identified are the social workers. Life satisfaction findings reveal that majority of the respondents are moderately satisfied with their life, contrary to negative stereotypes on older persons living in institutions.Item Cost structure and profitability of oyster farming in Panay, CapizBaes, Jese B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)The study focused on the economic analysis of oyster farming; particularly productivity, costs and returns, income, and employment aspects as they relate to different farm sites, farm sizes, and methods of culture in Panay, Capiz. A total of 27 oyster farmers were interviewed. Results revealed that the value of production per farm was estimated at P50,855, greatest in Butacal and least in Bantigue. By farm size, it appeared that the small farms were more efficient per unit area. The combination of broadcast, stake and hanging methods yields the highest crop per farm. Oysters harvested from the farm were primarily sold. About 5% were given away to friends, relatives, or paid for services, and family members consumed only 2%. Consisting mostly of boat/raft and plots, farm investment was relatively low in Agojo/Tanza Norte than in other farm sites. Butacal had the largest investment of P49,803 per farm. Investment per unit area was relatively less for the bigger farms. The hanging method required the least investment while the broadcast with stake appeared to be the most costly. Hired labor and food were the major variable inputs, depreciation accounted for fixed cost and opportunity cost primarily included opportunity cost of investment. Total expenses per farm averaged P5,623. By farm size, total costs were lower in larger oyster farms. As the farm size increased, expenses also increased while per unit area decreased with increasing farm size. Oyster farmers using the broadcast with stake method incurred the largest farm expenses. Gross income was estimated at P49,961 per year. A direct relationship between farm size and gross income exists. By method of culture, the combination of broadcast, stake and hanging methods earned the highest gross income. The same relationships as that for gross income were observed in the analysis of the net income. On the average, an oyster farmer received a gross profit of P49,727 and a pure profit of P45,232. Gross and pure profit increased with farm size. The combination of the broadcast, stake and hanging methods earned the highest pure profit of P79,511 Small- sized farms and farms that used the hanging method received negative pure profits. The study recommends that the government should take steps to improve the performance of the farms especially with the low-income farm sites and should seek ways of advancing the socioeconomic condition of oyster farmers. Likewise the municipal governments should properly implement the monitoring of oyster farms to check the socioeconomic conditions, the plans of the oyster farmers, and the obstacles they encountered toward the improvement of their business. Researches directed at enhancing the productivity levels of oyster farming should be given priority. Oyster farming being a part-time activity must be complemented with programs that encourage alternative income sources
