Item Electoral campaign of mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 electionCababasay, Ivy C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-10)This is a descriptive study of the electoral campaign of the six mayoral candidates of Leon, Iloilo in the 1992 election. The 1992 Leon mayoral candidates were Romulo Cabana, Neri Cabsaba. Alejandro Caelian. Jaime Calosing. Rodolfo Camarista and Ismael Candolada. This study aims to present a profile of the 1992 Leon mayoral candidates: to determine the campaign resources; to analyze the campaign organization and the campaign strategies of the mayoral candidates during the electoral campaign: to analyze the voters' choice and perceptions of the 1992 Leon mayoral electoral campaign; and, to analyze the electoral campaign of the mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon. To satisfy these objectives, the researcher interviewed the mayoral candidates, some of their family members, their campaign staff and/or their representatives. A questionnaire was also formulated and was administered to the respondents. The findings of the study reveal that almost all of the mayoral candidates came from prominent families. Most of them came from the upper-middle class families except for Cabana and Cabsaba who considered their family as belonging to the lower class. Except for Romulo Cabana, all mayoral candidates in the 1992 election in Leon were college graduates. Except for Calosing and Camarista all four mayoral candidates had ran for an elective office prior to the 1992 election. The campaign resources, particularly the material resources of a candidate were the determining factor in the success of his electoral campaign. It was also found out that most of the mayoral candidates have no formal structural organization in their electoral campaign except for Cabana and Calosing. Campaign strategies common among the mayoral candidates were holding of caucus in the barangays, distribution of leaflets, stickers, sample ballots and posting of streamers and other campaign materials. Character assasination and mudslinging were also present in the campaign. Voters were more interested in the personal issues raised against the mayoral candidates than their proposed programs of government or public concerns. They (voters) voted for the mayoral candidate based on the latter's personality or personal attributes. Personalities are more remembered than social and political issues. Although there was vote-buying in the 1992 election, the mayoral candidates and the voters themselves considered it peaceful and orderly due to the absence of violence.Item The political elites of Tubungan, Iloilo: Their characteristics and contributions to the municipality, 1992-2001Beriones, Beben C.; Garbe, Adeste B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This is a descriptive study on the characteristics and contributions of the political elites of Tubungan, Iloilo to their Municipality from 1992 to 2001. It is focused on the mayors, the vice-mayors and the members of the Sangguniang Bayan. The researchers presented the characteristics and the contributions they have made for the development of their municipality. The political elites’ contributions were measured in terms of the programs, the projects and the ordinances they have made. There are three factors that helped the researchers in the discussion of the topic: (1) The political careers of the political elites, (2) the characteristics of the political elites, and (3) their contributions to the municipality of Tubungan, Iloilo. In as much as ideal and necessary, the researchers tried to gather all documents about the topic, and tried to interview all the political elites; however, it was not possible due to some constraints like some documents were already lost, and two of the political elites are already living outside the province. The findings of the study is that the political elites of Tubungan share some common characteristics such as: (1) all have landholdings, (2) all are active members of organizations in their municipality, (3) all are earning more than Pl00, 000 a year, (4) all are Roman Catholics, & (5) all are contributing to their municipality’s development. The mayors’ contributions are viewed in terms of projects and programs such as infrastructures, delivery of social services and improved agricultural productions. For the vice-mayors and the Sangguniang Bayan members, their contributions are measured in terms of the number of ordinances that they have legislated aimed at improving the lives of the people of Tubungan. The study reveals that the responses, considering all year levels, do not seem to vary considerably. There has not been so much difference in their responses although younger students seemed quite conservative in their outlook in some matters. The study also reveals that the respondents had a positive perception towards feminism since most of their responses on the items were feminist in leaning. Most of their responses indicate that women these days are more or less enjoying a favorable status in society, although they still believe that gender inequality still exists. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study sought to determine the kind of locus of control of the respondents and the level of academic adjustment as seen in their grade point averages. The researchers aimed to find out if there exists a relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. This study was patterned on a previous research on the relationship between the same variables but this study utilized a different instrument and respondents came from Iloilo province. Fifteen (15) college students whose fathers were imprisoned at the time that they were enrolled served as respondents of the study. All respondents came from Iloilo, 33% of which are from Iloilo City and the remaining 67% are from the municipalities. Their ages range from 17-24. Respondents were selected using the snowball method. Respondents were asked to answer the Trice Academic Locus of Control Scale. The scale is composed of 28 items answerable by true or false determined the kind of locus of control of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. In addition, the respondents were asked to submit their copy of grades of the previous semester to determine how well they adjust academically. The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation is r=0.26 with a rcrit=0.441 at 0.05 alpha. This signifies that indeed there is a significant relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. However, it revealed a weak positive correlation between locus of control and academic adjustment. The findings imply that locus of control is not the sole cause or factor for academic adjustment. The cause or source of a well-adjusted academic performance of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers may therefore be attributed to other factors such as economic and social support coming from family and friends. Such factors could even lead to a poor academic performance. Lastly, academic adjustment and locus of control vary among the respondents, which suggest individual differences among themItem The portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion ReynaBalsamo, Ethel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-04)This study deals with gender analysis on the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. Violence against women is evident in the films of director and it comes in many forms, be it physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Patriarchy, women seen as sex object are some of the factors that contributed to the violence toward women and it happens in most social groups and all income levels. The ideas and images of women in reality are reinforced in the mass media on which people model their behavior and attitudes. Thus, indeed there is a relationship between the social condition of women in reality and the portrayal of violence against women in films.Item The political career of Mayor Romulo Cabana of Leon, Iloilo (1992-2001)Andrada, Ed Nathan; Torrijos, Richelle Paul (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04)This is the study on the political career of Romulo C. Cabana, a three-term municipal mayor of Leon, Iloilo (1992-2001). The objectives of the study were: to trace Romulo Cabana’s ascendancy as the top executive of the Municipality of Leon, which includes his inherent qualities, political affiliations, socio-economic position, educational background and strategies that led to his election as mayor; to assess Mayor Cabana’s political philosophies and leanings, and; to make a comparison between the programs of the Municipal Government and what were accomplished. To achieve these objectives, the researchers used the following methods: an archival research, which includes materials contained in the different agencies of the local government, and the local library of the Municipality of Leon; interview with key informants, which includes the mayor himself and a number of local constituents who have the knowledge and experience associating with Mayor Cabana. The researchers have found out, that as a political leader, Romulo Cabana, has inherent qualities and characteristics that led his career to a three-term mayor of the Municipality of Leon. He has the willingness to serve his constituents, especially those who are less fortunate in the society. His socio-economic background had further induced and strengthened his cause for the “masa” or the ordinary people. Mayor Cabana’s political career had once proved that, political strategies and affiliations were secondary if not only to serve as a background to public service and societal responsibilities. With his career he also proved that experience and practicability is more worth than the highest educational attainment or status. With his unique political repertoire and humanistic charisma, many of his constituents in Leon had described him as the most “loved,” and the most respected municipal mayor in Leon to date. And with few critics on the opposite side, Mayor Cabana did his job steadfastly with a vision for growth and development of the Municipality of Leon.
