    Effects of Chromolaena odorata leaves as amendments to poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer to improve growth, yield, biomass accumulation and inorganic content of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum)

    Chromolaena odorata (a weed in the family Asteraceae) has been shown to enhance the buildup of organic matter in a fallow system in tropical soil. Therefore, the aim of this study was to to determine the effects of Chromolaena odorata leaves as an amendment to poultry manure and triple 14 inorganic fertilizer on the growth, yield, biomass accumulation and inorganic contents of Lycopersicum esculentum. The field experiment was conducted at Agsanayan Buenavista Guimaras where the weed has wide distribution. The leaves of C. odorata were air dried and composted using Berkeley method. The compost obtained was used as an amendment to either poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer and was tested on tomato for three months in RCBD. Obtained results proved that tested treatments with amendments of C. odorata were significantly higher in lengths of shoots and roots, flower and fruit yield, amount of biomass accumulated and inorganic contents of tomato than those with no amendments of C. odorata. Therefore, C. odorata is an efficient amendment to both organic and inorganic fertilizers. It was suggested that the weed should be utilized to serve as a green manure.

    Community structure, biomass production and carbon stock assessment of mangroves in Barangay Ambolong, Batan, Aklan

    Mangroves are evergreen shrubs and trees of several unrelated families that thrive within intertidal zones of sheltered flats, coves, bays, and estuarine regions extending inland along streams and river where water is primarily brackish. Continued threats to their existence call for their protection and conservation. This study was conducted to assess the community structure of mangroves in Brgy. Ambolong, Batan, Aklan by 1). measuring physico-chemical parameters (salinity, temperature, pH) 2). describing the community structure in terms of and in terms of a) basal area, b) stems per hectare, c) relative density, d) relative frequency, e) relative dominance, f) importance value, g) Index of Diversity, h) seedling and sapling density, and i) zonation pattern; 3). to assess the bidmass production and carbon stock. This study was done to provide preliminary information regarding the current status of mangroves in the area. Three (3) transect lines, each containing three (3) plots, were established in the area. Twenty (20) mangrove species belonging to eleven (11) families were identified: Acanthaceae - Acanthus ebreatus, Acanthus volubilis; Arecaceae - Nypa fruticans; Avicenniaceae - Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia rumphiana; Bombaceae — Camptostemon philippinensis; Euphorbiaceae - Excoecaria agallocha; Meliaceae — Xylocarpus grioanatum, Xylocarpus moluccensis; Myrsinaceae — Aegiceras corniculatum; Myrtaceae - Osbornia octodonta; Rhizophoraceae - Bruguiera cylindrica, Ceriops decandra, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa; Rubiaceae - Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea; Sonneratiaceae - Sonneratia alba. Water salinity in the study area ranged from 27-30 ppt; soil temperature ranged from 28°C to 30°C. Avicennia marina had the highest values for basal area (4.22 m2/ha), stems per hectare (15,700 stems per hectare), relative density (63.56), relative frequency (63.56%), relative dominance (48.10%), and was the most important species with the importance value of 175. Rhizophora stylosa had the lowest values for basal area (0.002 m2/ha), stems per hectare (100 stems/ha), relative density (0.40 trees/ha), relative frequency (0.4%), relative dominance (0.23%), and was the least important species, having the importance value of 0.832. Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia officinalis, together with Rhizophora stylosa, had the lowest value for stems per hectare (100 stems/ha), relative density (0.40 trees/ha), and relative frequency (0.4%). Seedling density was highest for Avicennia alba(187 seedlings/ha) and lowest for Bruguiera cylindrica (1 seedling/ha). Sapling density was highest for Avicennia marina (54 saplings/ha) and lowest for Excoecaria agallocha (1 sapling/ha). The Index of Diversity was H=0.598. The highest recorded litter was 336.6 g in December 19, 2012-January 2, 2013 while the lowest was recorded at 18.2 grams in December 5-December 29, 2012. Highest biomass production was that of Avicennia marina (962.94 tons/ha), while the lowest was Avicennia officinalis (0.009 tons/ha). Avicennia marina had the highest carbon stock value of 433.32 tons/ha; the lowest was that of Avicennia officinalis (0.004 tons/ha).

    Effects of pH and salinity on growth and survival of juvenile sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger, 1833)

    Sea cucumber aquaculture could provide a solution to both enhance declining wild sea cucumber populations through restocking and provide sufficient beche-de-mer product to satisfy the increasing Asian market demand. The growth and survival of hatchery-reared Holothuria scabra juveniles at different pH-salinity levels were investigated. Juveniles were exposed for 14 days in six pH-salinity levels: Trt 1 (pH 6.5 — 6.7, 26-28 %o), Trt 2 (pH 6.5 - 6.7, normal salinity), Trt 3 (pH 7.0 - 7.2, 26-28 %o), Trt 4 (pH 7.0 — 7.2, normal salinity), Trt 5 (normal pH, 26-28 %o) and Trt 6 (normal pH, normal salinity) as the control. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with repeated measurements revealed that pH and salinity had a significant effect on growth (length, width, and weight) and survival of H. scabra juveniles. Slight seawater desalination combined with high acidification (pH: 6.5-6.7) had lethal effects on H. scabra juveniles. While H. scabra juveniles could be reared in seawater with pH ≥ 7.0- 7.2 and salinity ≥ 26-28 %o, ambient seawater conditions remained the most suitable in rearing H. scabra juveniles for optimum growth and survival.

    Documentation of food handling practices in relation to health conditions of children aging 0 to 6 years old in Barangay Lanag Sur, Tubungan, Iloilo

    Improper home food handling preparation and consumption practices by consumers, inadequate hygiene practices, consumption of raw and unsafe food, as well as cross contamination by raw food are some factors and practices that have been implicated in food borne outbreaks in the home (Taulo et al., 2006). A survey was conducted to 27 households with children aged 0-6 years old from Barangay Lanag Sur, Tubungan, Iloilo. Of the 27 respondents, majority belong to the 30- 39(46.15%) age group, are housewives(65.38%) who were also in charge of preparing the food(53.8%), with monthly income ranging from 0-4999 pesos(57.69%). Among the respondents, six of them were randomly taken for sources of food sample which was tested for physical and microbial examination. Based on the survey, food preparation practices of households in the barangay is composed of washing, cutting, rewashing, boiling to cook/sterilize (for infant formulas), and cooling to room temperature. Majority of the respondents consume right kind of foods essential for nutritional use and use untreated spring water for its preparation. Food samples taken have pH values ranging from 6.15 to 6.975. The test for coliform indicated that two out of six households were positive for presence of coliform. Among the common illnesses of children recorded, 96% have had a history of acute respiratory infections and 84% have had episodes of gastrointestinal illness. Food handling practice in the community is simple and not capable of eliminating pathogenic substances like coliform bacteria totally.

    Antibacterial activity of Aqueous and Methanol extracts of selected Basidiomycetes from UPV, Miagao, Iloilo, Philippines

    The Basidiomycetes represent an enormous source for natural products with diverse chemical structures and wide-ranging antimicrobial activity. This study was done to investigate the antibacterial property of selected species of basidiomycetes aqueous and methanolic extracts against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Specifically, it aimed to (1) determine the antibacterial activity of the aqueous extract of selected species of basidiomycetes in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the zone of inhibition; (2) determine the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract of selected species of basidiomycetes in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the zone of inhibition; and (3) compare the aqueous and methanolic extracts of selected species of basidiomycetes in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the zone of inhibition. A total number of ten species were collected namely Auricularia sp., Schizophyllum sp., Trametes pubescens, Trametes versicolor, Trametes elegans, Ganoderma sp.(l), Ganoderma sp.(2), Stereum sp. and two unknowns. Dried samples were crushed and extracted with water and methanol. Antibacterial activity was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The results showed a negative to weak inhibition against the test microorganisms which is inconsistent with the results of previous studies. It could possibly be attributed to the preparation of the samples and the fruiting body maturity that influenced the antibacterial potential of the samples. It appears that fruiting bodies used in the present study may not be reliable sources of bioactive compounds for antibacterial activity.
