Item KPOP Ilonggo fans consumption of Kpop MTV contentBertuldes, Relly; Montalvo, Johna Raf; Silvederio, Julie Ann Mae (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)The popularity of Korean popular (Kpop) music among the Ilonggo fans aged 15-24 years is the main focus of this research, a local extension to what was nationally probed by Sarah Kristine M. Alanzalon in 2011.An online survey among 196 Ilonggo Kpop fans, and focus interviews to fifteen (15) Ilonggo Kpop fans of the Korean groups Girls' Generation, Super Junior, Shinee, Bigbang and EXO. The researchers determined the variables of "consumption of Kpop content, cultural offerings present in Kpop content, and. needs of the fans satisfied by Kpop content" (Alanzalon , 2011). It was found out that the Ilonggo respondents are highly exposed to Korean popular music, consumed these media texts through various media channels, predominantly the Internet. Among the various cultural offerings, the research found out that the visual aspect has the most impact among Ilonggo fans and choreography is its most appealing facet. Aside from surveillance, identification and interaction; entertainment was discovered to be the most gratified need of Ilonggo Kpop fans. Despite the apparent language differences, it was ascertained that it is not a barrier to fans' consumption but rather paves way to languageacquisition. Particular factors were hereby uncovered: increasing accessibility of the Internet; entertainment, choreography in particular; language acquisition and; new knowledge acquirement. These factors found in media of international source, such as the phenomenal Kpop Music TV (MTV), can be a tool to help the local media enhance MTV productions, leading to increased consumption among the Ilonggo MTV viewers.Item The effectivity of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in empowering the youth through public policy making in the Municipality of Tibiao (1996-2002)Begaso, Dianna Fe Y. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03-27)This study aims to discuss the effectivity of the Sangguniang Kabataan in empowering the youth through public policy-making in the Municipality of Tibiao, Antique (1996-2002). The objectives of the research include the identification of the programs and activities initiated by the six (6) SK Chairpersons and the Federation President during their six-year term, and to discuss their performance as local legislators. Through this, the researcher may ascertain whether the SK in the Municipality of Tibiao is effective in empowering the youth through public policy-making. The respondents in the research include the members of the Sangguniang Bayan of the municipality, composed of the vice mayor and eight (8) legislative council members, and the Association of Barangay Council (ABC) president and all the members of the Sangguniang Barangay composing of the Barangay Captain and the seven (7) council members. The instrument used in this study is an open-ended questionnaires divided into two major parts: (a) activities and programs of the SK in the intellectual, political, and economic, social and cultural, moral and spiritual, and physical aspects, (b) the performance of the SK concerned as local legislators. The discussion of the legislative performance of the 6 SK Chairpersons and the Federation President is limited to the perception of the members of the Barangay and Municipal Legislative Councils. The major findings of the research are primarily based on the written responses of the respondents mentioned. The researcher found out that in the six-year term (1996-2002) of the SK concerned, their effectiveness focused mainly in the socio-cultural and physical aspects. Participation of the youth in the making of public policy is poor and inactive. As legislators, they initiated a limited number of resolutions constituting to their ineffectiveness. There were three reasons that had been identified by the researcher, which hampered the SK performance, namely: academic obligations in school, lack of coordination among members (weak organization), and limited support from the Barangay and Municipal Legislative Councils. In general, the six (6) SK Chairpersons and the Federation President in the Municipality of Tibiao, Antique is ineffective in bringing empowerment to their constituents through public policy.Item Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City: Their personal well-being, sense of national identity, and views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issuesBalilhe, Charinson C.; Guillerme, Kerry Anne O. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)This research examined the personal well-being, sense of national identity, and views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues of Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City. Twenty-one (21) males and twelve (12) females, 13-27 years of age, unmarried, and of Maranao descent participated in this research. Scales were used to rate the respondents' personal well-being and for general ethnicity. A questionnaire for pride in being Filipino used to determine their sense of national identity, and an open-ended questionnaire to determine their views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues. It was found out that the Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City have high level personal well-being where most respondents showed high scores in self-esteem, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with life. Most of the respondents also showed strong national identity. Respondents had held different views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues. While 76% do not support the terrorists group, others (45%) do not support the man-hunt against it. and that 48% believe that the 9/11 event was plain terrorism.Item Framing deliberative democracy through the formation of Iloilo Provincial Youth Development CouncilAdelantar, Carmela Francesca S.; Alvizo, Sol Sophia Angeliene C.; Lozaida, Gabriel Angelo G.; Seva, Bianca R. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)This study was done in order to frame deliberative democracy in the promotion of youth participation in local governance through the Iloilo Provincial Youth Development Council (Iloilo PYDC). It examined the processes of decision-making and consensus building of Iloilo PYDC in answering the following research questions: (1) how are the members of the Local Youth Development Council selected; (2) how did the degree of influence of the youth sector in local decision making increase through the LYDC; (3) what is the role of the Local Government Units, civil society, and other stakeholders in equipping Local Youth Development Council to conduct deliberative policy discussions; (4) what are the best deliberative practices in Iloilo PYDC. The study was descriptive and made the use of 20-item survey, focus group discussion, key informant interview, and observation of Iloilo PYDC meeting. The research results indicate that the extent of power given by the Iloilo PYDC to the youth mainly focused on being a platform for consultation and discussion of youth interests, enabling them to set agendas and present issues that may not normally be addressed. They can then lobby local governments to include these concerns in development plans such as the Local Youth Development Plan (LYDP). The deliberative practices of the Iloilo PYDC have served as a platform for youth organizations to present and lobby the Ilonggo youth’s needs and interests. This research recommends that there should be a meaningful implementation of the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Law and enrichment of deliberative democratic practice that will further strengthen youth participation in local governance.
