Item Comparative analysis of the program format of TV Patrol and 24 OrasBerja, Alice Bernadette F.; Nidoy, Michelle Gay M. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This descriptive-comparative study aims to determine the program format of the two mainstream TV news programs here in the Philippines: TV Patrol (ABSCBN) and 24 Oras (GMA). There are two types of TV news program format, standard format and tabloid format. Both formats are guided by four elements: segment, news selection, news delivery and language. Survey was used in measuring the knowledge of Ilonggo viewers on the program format of TV Patrol and 24 Oras. The study covered 12 barangays in Iloilo City with 400 respondents. Results of the data-gathering process showed that TV Patrol is in tabloid format while 24 Oras is in standard format. News delivery is the most tabloid element of TV Patrol while Language is the most standard element of 24 Oras. Both formats have implications to the viewers’ knowledge and perception towards the reality of news stories.Item The practice of responsible journalism in the newscasting format of TV Patrol PanayBangud, Colen D.; Villacastin, Gretchen C.; Villanuvea, Froilene C. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03)It is often a battle between public service and public interest that calls on the core standard of responsible journalism. TV Patrol Panay is a tabloid newscast format, a form of television programming that has a strong leaning towards sensationalizing news. This research, however, seeks to find a systematic pattern as to whether a tabloid news program, such as TV Patrol Panay, does practice responsible journalism, despite the common presumption about tabloid practices. A systematic quantitative content analysis was used to scrutinize the practice of responsible journalism in the tabloid newscasting of TV Patrol Panay. In the endeavour to measure the concentration of responsible journalism practice in TV Patrol Panay's tabloid newscasting, a quantitative content analysis was applied in the calculation of the news program’s violations against the Journalist's Code of Ethics. The same procedure was applied to the calculation of the news program's tendencies towards tabloid practices. The results were then given percentual readings and were qualitatively analyzed and discussed. Results reveal that TV Patrol Panay practices responsible journalism despite its tabloid news format. Nonetheless, its news program contains negative aspects of tabloid and follows the descriptive format of tabloid. TV Patrol Panay in tabloid newscasting format practices responsible journalism. Its news program contains negative aspects of tabloid and follows the descriptive format of tabloid. It can hereby be deduced that although the tabloid news program is associated with the turning down of high standards of journalism (Alotaibi, 2013), the results showed that not all news programs that are tabloid in format do not and refuse to bear with the high ethical standards of television journalism.Item Nature and operation of local cable networks in Miag-ao and Janiuay, Iloilo as they adhere to NTC rules and regulations as they serve subscribersAspa, Ma. Here in the Philippines, Pinoy Big Brother continues to become one of the most popular reality shows. The increasing popularity of PBB to its audience especially the youth prompted the conduct of the study to identify the perceptions on real life resulted from Ilonggo teenagers' exposure to PBB Lucky Season 7. Anchored on George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory, the researchers conducted a survey among Grade 12 Senior High School students in the First Congressional District of Iloilo. The researchers utilized the gualitative and guantitative method in data collection and analysis. The overall mean score reflected a positive perception, thereby, the researchers have concluded that reality TV viewing has a positive effect on the perception of Ilonggo teenagers towards real life. The positive perceptions revealed that regardless of being light viewers, respondents’ exposure to PBB Lucky Season 7 bears effect in influencing their perception on real life. Hence, it presents a different light on Gerbner's Cultivation Theory, which states that television's immense influence is mirrored on the heavy viewers. The reality cultivated by reality shows like Pinoy Big Brother is a manifestation of the strength of the television as a medium and as a powerful tool that can shape the minds and the society.Item Television viewing patterns of children in a rural communityAllones, Christine Marie G; Montalvo, Nica M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)The general objective of the study is to find out if there is a relationship between TV viewing patterns of children in a rural community and the socio-demographic characteristics such as age, sex, and the parents’ educational attainment. Specifically, it aims to (1) describe the socio-demographic profile of the respondents; (2) determine if there is a relationship between children’s age and their TV viewing pattern; (3) determine if there is a relationship between children’s sex and their TV viewing pattern; (4) determine if there is a relationship between parents’ educational attainment and TV viewing pattern. The data analyzed in this study are obtained through conducting guided interviews with 80 children. The areas included by the researchers in the study are the hours and days of TV viewing of children, their program preferences, their sleeping time, and the frequency of scolding of the parents. It was found that majority of the respondents are 10-12 years olds, males, and have parents who have both high educational attainments. Results reveal that majority of respondents spend between one to five hours watching television everyday. Their usual sleeping time is before or at nine in the evening. Nonetheless, many are scolded for watching television on weekdays but never on weekends. The results of the study concluded that there is a significant relationship between sex and hours of television viewing while age and parent’s educational attainment have no significant relationship in the hours of television viewing. There is no apparent difference between the number of hours of television viewing and the age and parent’s educational attainment. The only difference is that majority of male children watch television for one to five hours a day, while most female children watch more than five hours of TV viewing. Thus, there is a significant relationship between sex and hours of television viewing. On the other hand, there is no significant relationship between the days of TV viewing and the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. The researchers recommended that a similar study could be conducted in an urban area, covering a bigger sample size, and using other set of variables that can affect the TV viewing patterns of children. Other researchers are also encouraged to explore the field since there are not so many studies about them in the country.Item Level of influence of east asian countries in the Ilonggo culture through televisionAlmedita, Florange R.; Chavez, Nahrielyn D.; Sotes, Mariel Yvonne L. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)The municipality of Sebaste in Antique Province is along the path of strong typhoons that can cause damage to lives and properties. The likely effects of these typhoons and other natural or man-made disasters can be mitigated by prompt information dissemination and early warning devices. Correct information and warnings that reach people at the right time can help them prepare for the impending disaster and avoid its likely effects. In Sebaste, there is no community-wide early warning system. This study focused on the value placed by the local residents of Sebaste, Antique for the establishment of an early warning device in the form of the Barangay Loud Speaker System (BLS) by estimating their willingness-to-pay (WTP) using Contingent Valuation Method. A total of 320 study participants representing their households, equally distributed in eight barangays of Sebaste, Antique were interviewed in January to March 2017 using a pilot-tested interview schedule. Seventy-five percent of the study participants were willing to pay for the BLS. The binary logit regression showed that bid price was the only factor that significantly (and negatively) affects WTP at 1% level of significance. The estimated monthly mean WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were P68.00 and P60.75, respectively. The monthly Social WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were Pl84,084.16 and Pl62,293.63, respectively. This study recommends that the local government of Sebaste should invest in the establishment of the BLS in each of 10 barangays of the municipality.
